Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 15-year-old female rhesus macaque was showing signs of bleeding from the vulva, while no other signs were noted. The animal was treated symptomatically with no improvement. On abdominal laparoscopy, a small transparent growth was discovered on both of the uterine horns, between the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and after thorough examination was diagnosed as a paraovarian cyst. The left cyst was larger (5-6 cm) than the right cyst (3-4 cm). Both of the cysts were smooth and transparent due to accumulated fluid. The cysts were aspirated and removed by bipolar laparoscopy cauterization.

Faced with the American Bar Association's proposed changes to law school accreditation standards, especially related to student assessment and outcome measurement, law schools are responding by developing and incorporating assessment standards. Likely related to these proposed changes, there has been an undeniable recent trend in law school assessment scholarship, which is one way to measure law schools' reactions to the call for change. This article contributes to that trend by offering an introduction to a methodology of assessing legal writing - through the use of detailed grading guidelines called rubrics. Our experience over the past several years of using rubrics …
The Right To Strike And Its Possible Conflict With Other Fundamental Rights Of The People In The United States, Charles B. Craver
The Right To Strike And Its Possible Conflict With Other Fundamental Rights Of The People In The United States, Charles B. Craver
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Although the right to strike is not constitutionally protected in the U.S., it is protected for private sector workers under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act as concerted activity for mutual aid and protection. Federal employees and most state and local government employees do not have the right to strike, but several states permit work stoppages by non-essential personnel. Most collective bargaining agreements contain no-strike clauses forbidding work stoppages during the term of such contracts. Sympathy strikes by private sector workers supporting strikes by employees bargaining over new contract terms are usually protected as concerted activity for mutual …

Reasonableness With Teeth: The Future Of Fourth Amendment Reasonableness Analysis, Cynthia Lee
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This essay assesses the past, the present, and the future of Fourth Amendment reasonableness analysis. Part I focuses on the past. For much of the twentieth century, the Court embraced what is called the warrant preference view of the Fourth Amendment under which a search was considered reasonable if the government obtained a search warrant prior to the search or an exception to the warrant requirement applied. Part II focuses on the present. Even though it still treats as reasonable both searches conducted pursuant to a warrant and searches that fall within a well established exception to the warrant requirement, …

Comparative Histological Structure Of The Sinus Node In Mammals, Abolghasem Nabipour
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The main function of the sinus node is to provide the electrical impulse responsible for normal cardiac rhythm. The rhythmic coordination depends on the passage of the excitation wave by the heart through its conductive system of impulse. There is considerable variability in the size and exact location of the sinus node of individual hearts even within the same species. Histological features of the sinus node including the cells, the nodal artery, the collagen framework, and the innervation, and also some physiological characteristics of the node, will be discussed.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Weanling crossbred pigs were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the effects of biotin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) challenge on serum cytokine concentrations and humoral immunoresponse. Although not significant, there was a trend towards reduced interferon-\gamma concentration in the challenged pigs compared to the controls, especially at 14 and 21 days postinoculation (dpi). Biotin supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin improved these levels, with higher doses producing an earlier and stronger response. Although the magnitude of the immune response was small and inconsistent, diet supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin appeared to increase serum immunoglobulin …

The Institutional Case For Judicial Review, Jonathan R. Siegel
The Institutional Case For Judicial Review, Jonathan R. Siegel
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The “popular constitutionalism” movement has revived the debate over judicial review. Popular constitutionalists have attacked judicial review as being illegitimate in a democracy or inconsistent with original intent, and they have argued that the Constitution should be enforced through popular, majoritarian means, such as elections and legislative agitation. This Article shows in response that the judicial process has institutional characteristics that make judicial review the superior method of constitutional enforcement. Prior literature has focused on just one such institutional characteristic — the political insulation of judges. This Article, by contrast, shows that the case for judicial review rests on a …

Traditional public financing of campaigns is in trouble. Successful candidates have increasingly rejected public financing because it provides inadequate funding and limits candidate spending. November 2012 was the first general election in which presidential candidates from both major parties rejected public financing since the inception of the program. The U.S. Supreme Court recently issued a decision that undermined traditional public financing systems. If existing programs are not revamped soon public financing may be off the public radar for decades, as budget deficits make antiquated public financing programs ripe targets for spending cuts. This Essay proposes a paradigm shift. Public financing …
In Defense Of Judicial Empathy, Thomas B. Colby
In Defense Of Judicial Empathy, Thomas B. Colby
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
President Obama has repeatedly stated that he views a capacity for empathy as an essential attribute of a good judge. And conservatives have heaped mountains of scorn upon him for saying so—accusing him of expressing open contempt for the rule of law. To date, the debate has been surprisingly one-sided. One federal judge has recently noted that “President Obama’s statement that judges should have ‘empathy’ was met with strong criticism from his opponents and uncomfortable silence from his supporters.” This Article seeks to offer a sustained defense of the President’s call for empathy in judging. Its argument is neither grounded …

The specific properties of nanoscale particles, large surface-to-mass ratio and highly reactive surfaces, have increased their commercial application in many fields. However, the same properties are also important for the interaction and bio-accumulation of the non-/biodegradable nanoscale particles in a biological system and are a cause for concern. Hematite (α-Fe2O3), being a mineral form of Fe(III) oxide, is one of the most used iron oxides besides magnetite. The aim of our study was the characterization and comparison of biophysical reactivity and toxicological effects of α-Fe2O3 nano- (d < 100 nm) and microscale (d < 5 μm) particles in human lung cells. Our study demonstrates that the surface reactivity of nanoscale α-Fe2O3 differs to that of microscale particles with respect to the state of agglomeration, radical formation potential, and cellular toxicity. The presence of proteins in culture medium and agglomeration were found to affect the catalytic properties of the hematite nano- and microscale particles. Both the nano- and microscale α-Fe2O3 particles were actively taken up by human lung cells in vitro, although, they were not found in the nuclei and mitochondria. …
An Examination Of Women’S Representation And Participation In Bicycle Advisory Committees In California, Hilary Nixon, C. Deluca
An Examination Of Women’S Representation And Participation In Bicycle Advisory Committees In California, Hilary Nixon, C. Deluca
Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning
In the United States, women bicycle at significantly lower rates than men. One method of remedying this disparity is to ensure that women are engaged in bicycle planning and policy making through, for example, participation in bicycle advisory committees (BACs). No research has been conducted on women’s representation and participation in these committees. This study attempts to fill that gap by examining women’s membership levels in and experiences serving on California bicycle advisory committees and bicycle/pedestrian advisory committees. In addition, we explore some of the barriers to participation faced by female cyclists. A survey of 42 committees revealed that women …

A Generalized Version Of An Ivantsov-Based Dendrite Growth Model Incorporating A Facility For Solute Measurement Ahead Of The Tip, Shaun Mcfadden, David Browne
Articles
Extensions to the Ivantsov dendrite growth model are presented, which allow for increased solute levels in the field ahead of the dendrite tip. This model is intended for use with video-microscopy experimental results taken from synchrotron radiography sources. Ideally, the composition and composition gradient at the solid-liquid interface would be measured. However, due to the spatial resolution limitations, it is difficult to accurately measure the composition at the interface. This paper sets out an extended description of the theory where measurements ahead of the tip determine the operating conditions at the tip. This extended model of dendritic growth may be …
