The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Armed violence has powerful, lasting impacts, inflicting severe injuries and impairments and leaving behind broken families, fearful communities and societies in which violence is the norm. It is a daily fear and fact of life for millions of people, particularly those in low income countries and in the marginalised urban zones of more developed countries.

Persons with disabilities experience heightened exposure to armed violence as a result of various factors, such as exclusion from education and employment, the need for personal assistance in daily life, social stigma, discrimination and communications barriers for reporting violence8 . Textiles of War: Women's Commentaries on Conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan Shortly after the events of September 11, 2001, patriotic imagery in the form of American flags began appearing in traditionally patterned rugs woven by Navajo women and beadwork sold on the reservation. This was not the first time women's textiles provided a political commentary on the destruction resulting from warfare. During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989, rugs featuring Soviet weaponry and vehicles appeared in the markets of Peshawar. Created by nomadic Beluch women who experienced the impact of war first-hand, the war rugs helped the …

Many textiles survive from presidential campaigns of the 19th and 20th centuries. Far fewer from congressional campaigns are extant. This paper will present a survey of campaign ribbons in the collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, and the use of textiles in 19th century congressional campaigns. Discussion of the role of ribbons in political campaigns, particularly as they relate to the more durable campaign buttons and pinbacks, will be pursued. Iconography and text commonly used in ribbons will also be discussed, as well as proposed reasons for their greater prevalence in national campaigns.

Starting in 1947 and lasting through the mid-sixties, the political attitudes and cultural mentality of United States Cold War crept into design, imposing codes of conduct by means of material goods and a distinct domestic aesthetic. In direct response to fear associated with the possibility of devastated nuclear landscapes, nature-inspired motifs on curtains and draperies allowed inhabitants to create a controlled situation, enclosing the interior of the home and shutting out the perils of manmade destruction outside. Likewise, seemingly abstract patterns mimic scientific images of atomic energy, atom and h-bombs, and airplanes, providing a new common visual language to help …

In this paper I reflect on my attendance of the Women’s Worlds 2011 congress held in Ottawa, Canada. I analyze responses of the international feminist audience to the paper I presented during the congress. The paper offered an analysis of the empirical data collected during my fieldwork in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in 2008 and was concerned with Bosnian women and their sexual relationships with peacekeepers during the war and in post conflict BiH. The United States Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island, in partnership with the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL), hosted the Naval Services Game (NSG) from 11-13 September 2012. The NSG was developed and executed under the sponsorship of the Naval Board. The purpose of the NSG was to explore the challenges associated with aggregating naval forces in response to an emerging conflict.

Illuminating Innovation: From Patent Racing To Patent War, Lea Shaver

Washington and Lee Law Review

Patent law assumes that stronger protection promotes innovation, yet empirical evidence to test this “innovation hypothesis” is lacking. This Article argues that historical case studies hold unique promise to provide an empirical foundation for modern patent policy. Specifically, this Article uses the history of patents surrounding the light bulb to examine a recently articulated theory of “patent racing” as a justification for patent protection. Thomas Edison’s experience confirms that Mark Lemley’s racing model has substantial descriptive merit. Yet this case study also reveals the limits of the patent racing model.
