Hyphenated Artists: A Body Of Potential, Laura Reeder Jan 2012

Hyphenated Artists: A Body Of Potential, Laura Reeder

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The author of this article, an art teacher, arts education advocate, teaching artist, pre-service art teacher supervisor and instructor confronts “either/or” professional identities in arts education. Multi-faceted artist/scholar/educator/ learner/advocate/personas are “unfenced” in order to navigate spaces of artistic, educational, and cultural production without having to pause for identification at borders. In this form, pedagogies for inventive social change emerge. Dialogue among fields of artists and educators links either/or, artist/teacher qualities in holistic and interdisciplinary descriptions such as artist-teacher, teaching-artist, etc. The hyphenated association has become postmodern shorthand for inclusive “both/and” professional identities that in the 21st century may be limiting …

Engaging With The Community, Ellen Hazelkorn, Elaine Ward Jan 2012

Engaging With The Community, Ellen Hazelkorn, Elaine Ward

Books/Book chapters

This article focuses on how higher education institutions (HEIs) engage with their external community, contribute to social and economic development, and underpin civil society and democracy. The external community consists of a wide-range of stakeholders from business and industry, the public, private and non-governmental sector, and civil society. While many HEIs have historically had a strong association to their city or nation, today the health of society and the economy is inextricably tied to greater collaboration between “town” and “gown”. The article has five main sections: i) Introduces the social and public responsibility of higher education, ii) Describes the policy …

A Neo-Chicago Approach To Concerted Action, William H. Page Jan 2012

A Neo-Chicago Approach To Concerted Action, William H. Page

UF Law Faculty Publications

In this article, I offer an approach to concerted action that builds on traditional Chicago School analyses of the issue, but adds a focus on the role of communication. Chicago scholars uniformly identify cartels as the primary target of antitrust enforcement. They have also established much of the framework within which courts and economists analyze concerted action. George Stigler’s seminal theory of oligopoly, which sought to identify the determinants of effective collusion, has spawned an enormous literature in game theory that models the pricing behavior of oligopolists. Richard Posner’s early analysis of tacit collusion - rivals’ coordination of noncompetitive pricing …

The Gaze Across The Aisle: Architecture, Merchandising, And Social Roles At Marshall Field And Company, 1892 To 1914, Clayton Funk Jan 2012

The Gaze Across The Aisle: Architecture, Merchandising, And Social Roles At Marshall Field And Company, 1892 To 1914, Clayton Funk

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Marshall Field and Company was a cultural and commercial anchor in Chicago's downtown area known as 'The Loop.' By 1914, it had expanded into the largest department store in the world at that time. This article illustrates Field's as a cultural and retail institution of artistry and popular education through a trope I term “the drama of shopping.” Using merchandising strategies adapted from the aesthetic movement, Field's produced the drama of shopping with social and cultural implications about class, gender, and race in three ways: First, the architecture of the store served as a carefully designed theatrical space for seeing …

The Implications Of Fictional Media For Political Beliefs, Ken Mulligan, Philip Habel Jan 2012

The Implications Of Fictional Media For Political Beliefs, Ken Mulligan, Philip Habel

Working Papers

Most research on media effects in political science deals with the news media or political campaigns. While some recent work looks at the effects of soft news on beliefs and opinions, little attention has been paid to the potential consequences of media that are fictional. Although viewers typically watch fiction for entertainment, the themes, plots, and dialogue may nevertheless influence their thoughts about politics. This paper examines the effects of fiction on political beliefs. We do this in the context of an experimental design, where subjects in the treatment group watched the outlandish movie, Wag the Dog. The results show …

Life As Contagion : Sheppard Lee And Arthur Gordon Pym's Viral Travel Logs, Lucy Turner Jan 2012

Life As Contagion : Sheppard Lee And Arthur Gordon Pym's Viral Travel Logs, Lucy Turner

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This research looks at Robert Montgomery Bird's novel Sheppard Lee, Written by Himself and Edgar Allan Poe's only work of long fiction, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Posing the narrators as viral agents within their respective plots, the research draws from contemporary antebellum sources as well as earlier, and more modern ones, ranging from Descartes to Agamben and Esposito. Following the viral model, the role of the protagonists is mapped in an effort to expose how their infectious actions lead to greater implications such as how they function as the virus, how they infect those around them, …
