Carbogen Treatment For Ph-Stat Management In Cardiopulmonary Bypass / Vijay Sundra Kumuran, Vijay Sundra Kumuran Jan 2012

Carbogen Treatment For Ph-Stat Management In Cardiopulmonary Bypass / Vijay Sundra Kumuran, Vijay Sundra Kumuran

Student Works (2010-2019)

Hypocarbia commonly occurs in infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass causing respiratory alkalosis with pH-stat management. In this study, pCO2 regulation was adjusted accordingly to sweep gas in control and treatment groups with gas-to-blood flow ratio of 0.5:1. Each extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (Capiox® RX05 and Medtronic® Minimax Plus® Hollow Fiber Oxygenator) contained control and treatment groups to determine carbogen intervention is necessary for infants undergoing hypothermic bypass. Arterial blood gas was corrected according to actual temperature of the patients for both control (without carbogen) and treatment (with carbogen) groups. The carbogen treatment was introduced to overcome the problem of maintaining pH and …

An Investigation Of Classroom Intervention : Plot As A Pre-Writing Strategy On The Narrative Writing Of Esl Students / Gan Shiau Chin, Shiau Chin Gan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Out of the four language skills, writing skills is said to be one of the harder skills for ESL students to master (Naginder Kaur, Nor Hayati Othman, & Abdullah, 2008; Sabariah Md. Rashid & Chan, 2008). Although writing is part of the major component being tested in the SPM English examination, yet many students with low level of English proficiency scores poorly for this component. One of the factors which lead to their poor performance in writing test is the lack of knowledge in pre-writing strategies. Pre-writing refers to the first stage of the writing processes, whereby one will spend …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Clinical evidence suggested that biological behavior as well as response to treatment is different in OSCC arising from the different anatomical locations of the mouth and could be influenced by the activation or/and inactivation of different genes and pathways. Objective: Gene expression analysis of OSCC from different sites of the oral cavity was conducted to determine if there were significant differences in the expression pattern that could be associated with clinical observations. Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from OSCC from cheek, gum, tongue and non-cancerous oral mucosal from the matching sites were used in microarray experiments (DASL, Illumina) to …

Nationalism, Identity And The Theatre Across The Spanish State In The Democratic Era, 1975 - 2010, Sharon G. Feldman, Anxo Abuín González Jan 2012

Nationalism, Identity And The Theatre Across The Spanish State In The Democratic Era, 1975 - 2010, Sharon G. Feldman, Anxo Abuín González

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The idea of a national theatre in its modern incarnation emerged during the eighteenth century, coinciding with the political and social turmoil of the French Revolution. Its intellectual and aesthetic origins thus can be traced to concerns with individual expression and national identity that came to light in relation to European Romanticism. Since that time, a myriad of public institutions, some of them quite massive and others more diminutive, have surfaced on the European theatrical landscape in accordance with the post-Enlightenment concept of a national theatre. They are designed to encourage a national repertoire. Curiously, these institutions have often predated …

Star Messengers, Paul Zimet, Ellen Maddow, Smith College. Kahn Liberal Arts Institute Jan 2012

Star Messengers, Paul Zimet, Ellen Maddow, Smith College. Kahn Liberal Arts Institute

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Star Messengers is a musical theater work about two scientists, Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler, who changed our view of the universe. Writer Paul Zimet and composer Ellen Maddow have created a carnival of genres—opera, Commedia dell'Arte, Strindbergian Dream Play, and contemporary dance/theater—to produce a theatrical language that conveys the wonder of Galileo's and Kepler's discoveries. While some aspects of Galileo's life and discoveries are well known, hardly anything is popularly known of his scientific contemporaries. Johannes Kepler's realization that the planets moved not in perfect circles, but in elliptical paths, was a leap of mind as extraordinary as that …

Diva Voce : Reimagining The Diva In Contemporary Feminist Performance, Dawn Albinger Jan 2012

Diva Voce : Reimagining The Diva In Contemporary Feminist Performance, Dawn Albinger

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This practice-led contemporary performance study investigates and invigorates the diva icon’s usefulness to feminist theatre praxis. It traces the research journey from an unexamined belief in the diva as an icon of empowered, independent and expressive womanhood, to a more nuanced conception of the diva as boundless feminist performer and philosophical subject. Two major questions emerge from and drive the process. The primary research question asks: How can the diva icon (in all her fury and glory and wretchedness and perversity and mastery and mortality) usefully inform a feminist theatre praxis? Early investigations give rise to a subsequent social query: …

Instructional Technology Resistance Levels Among University Faculty, Katie Glaze

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to contribute to a better understanding of resistance to instructional technology among university faculty. Siegel's (2008) Resistance to Instruction Technology questionnaire was employed to full-time faculty members working at a mid-west regional state university. Results from 226 respondents (37% of population) reported low levels of technology resistance. Further, respondents gave insight to their perceptions, attitudes, and actual use of instructional technology. Finally, recommendations for practitioners related resistance to instructional technology were discussed.

The Inward Turn Of Consciousness : Gods, Metaphors, Necessity, And The Continued Relevance Of Greek Tragedy, Jillian Knapczyk Jan 2012

The Inward Turn Of Consciousness : Gods, Metaphors, Necessity, And The Continued Relevance Of Greek Tragedy, Jillian Knapczyk

Honors Capstones

This paper was written to examine Greek Tragedy in its entirety, specifically through the playwrights Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. We focused on the inward turn of consciousness, or the movement from the great gods of Olympus authorizing actions through supra-human forces informing character, to conflicting psychic drives that condition human lives and motivate actions. We looked at the backgrounds of all three playwrights, analyzed each play, and ultimately concluded that Greek Tragedy is still important today. Greek Tragedy remains profoundly relevant today because it tries to explain ourselves, our relationship to others, our relationship to the world, and our relationship …

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Advertisers employ bare-skinned models and sex appeal to seduce American consumers with every magazine, billboard, and television advertisement. The ubiquity of sexual gratification has reached a tangible quality in American culture, but sex is still somehow taboo in our legal system. Despite the vast market for online adult entertainment, obscenity laws have been used to strike down claims for adult content copyright owners. These content owners are producing creative sexual expression for the public benefit, but they are being denied the same economic incentives granted to their mainstream counterparts. Ironically, Playboy Co. is an outlier in the adult entertainment industry …

An Intergenerational Study: Mirrors As A Tool For Self-Reflection, Susan Ridley Jan 2012

An Intergenerational Study: Mirrors As A Tool For Self-Reflection, Susan Ridley

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

Globalization and advances in technology have resulted in a loss of cultural, community, and individual identity. Having a strong sense of self can be a protective factor in resisting peer pressure and involvement in negative behaviors, and a determining factor in the formation of one’s coping skills, and resiliency to life’s challenges. This was especially important for adolescents who are negotiating the developmental growth from childhood to adulthood, and older adults who are transitioning from the independence of adulthood to the dependence of old age.

This was a qualitative intergenerational study on the process of self-reflection on identity. Mirrors have …

Mary And Women In Late Imperial Russian Orthodoxy, Vera Shevzov Jan 2012

Mary And Women In Late Imperial Russian Orthodoxy, Vera Shevzov

Religion: Faculty Books

Russian women of the nineteenth century are often thought of in their literary incarnations as the heroines of novels such as Anna Karenina and War and Peace. But their real-life counterparts are now becoming better understood as active contributors to Russia's varied cultural landscape. This collection of essays examines the lives of women across Russia - from wealthy noblewomen in St Petersburg to desperately poor peasants in Siberia - discussing their interaction with the Church and the law, and their rich contribution to music, art, literature and theatre. It shows how women struggled for greater autonomy and, both individually and …

Art And Cultural Participation In Nevada, Robert Tracy Jan 2012

Art And Cultural Participation In Nevada, Robert Tracy

Social Health of Nevada Reports

Pablo Picasso once famously observed that “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” As the second edition of the Social Health of Nevada report suggests, it certainly seems like the “dust of daily life” has descended on the souls of this State’s citizens and a thorough washing is necessary. With the economic collapse at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, Nevadans found out very quickly they were neither “protected” nor “immune” from the financial maelstrom that had been unleashed. Having lived in Las Vegas since 1984, I had heard …

The Aesthetic Code Of Russian Postmodernism, Mark Lipovetsky Jan 2012

The Aesthetic Code Of Russian Postmodernism, Mark Lipovetsky

Russian Culture

Postmodernist discourse has become central to literary criticism in the 1990s. Unlike many other literary discourses, it was never formally announced, yet beginning in the late 1980s (with Mikhail Epstein’s articles) it took over almost all literary publications and effectively led to a new polarization of literary forces. If, during the first years of Perestroika, literary and cultural factions were divided primarily along political lines, with Western liberal sympathizers and anti-Communists on one side, and nationalist defenders of Communism on the other, then by the middle of the 1990s debate about postmodernism had split the liberals into those who sided …

The Russian Cinematic Culture, Oksana Bulgakova Jan 2012

The Russian Cinematic Culture, Oksana Bulgakova

Russian Culture

The cinema has always been subject to keen scrutiny by Russia's rulers. As early as the beginning of this century Russia's last czar, Nikolai Romanov, attempted to nationalize this new and, in his view, threatening medium: "I have always insisted that these cinema-booths are dangerous institutions. Any number of bandits could commit God knows what crimes there, yet they say the people go in droves to watch all kinds of rubbish; I don't know what to do about these places." The plan for a government monopoly over cinema, which would ensure control of production and consumption and thereby protect the …

Souls/Soles Of Signs Tell Totems And The Sphinx Wager, Darryl A. Smith M.Div., Ph.D. Jan 2012

Souls/Soles Of Signs Tell Totems And The Sphinx Wager, Darryl A. Smith M.Div., Ph.D.

Occasional Papers

This paper develops a philosophy of play through an analysis of the foot wager of the Sphinx. Applying a construction of the cosmology of Plato along with a Socratic etymology of her riddle’s answer, it provides a reading of Sphingian contestation consistent with contemporary practices of deception found in modern games like poker. I argue that such deception is constitutive of the excessive illumination of signaling tells in games and that such excess, in turn, is indicative in allied political contexts of a covetous and acquisitive obsession with light. This theory makes use also of Ralph Ellison’s refiguring of Oedipal …

Actor Skills In Managerial And Professional Development: Effective Leadership Training For The Information Age, David Hendrik De Vries Jan 2012

Actor Skills In Managerial And Professional Development: Effective Leadership Training For The Information Age, David Hendrik De Vries

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The knowledge-based economies of today’s information age demand a higher level of communication skills in the workplace. One viable method of teaching communication skills leverages the techniques found in actor training. This thesis explores the use and effectiveness of actor training in the training and development of managers and professionals. The theories of Aristotle, Burke, Dewey and Ong are referenced to understand the value of the performance metaphor—“As a leader, you’re always onstage”—as an underlying approach, while the theories of Wiener, Watzlawick, Baxter, Ting Toomey and others reinforce the viability of actor training in the field of communication. A review …

Impact Of Improvisation On Interpersonal Communication, Brooklin Green Jan 2012

Impact Of Improvisation On Interpersonal Communication, Brooklin Green

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Improvisational games have grown outside the scope of performance to become tools to enhance, creativity, and communication. Recently, people have begun to use these games in a variety of fields including psychology, public speaking, corporate businesses, medicine, and education. Improvisational games help people learn through play. It shows that the use of these games can create an environment that opens communication to achieve learning and innovation. It is a positive tool in promoting confidence, empathy, listening skills, self-awareness, group awareness, quick thought and focus in the moment. While research on the benefit of improvisation does exist, few concentrate on the …
