Models Of Authorship: Margaret Oliphant And George Eliot, Joanne Shattock

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This article is about the profession of authorship in the nineteenth century. More specifically it is about the writing lives of two women novelists. Margaret Oliphant's (1828-1897) work is unfamiliar to most modem readers, apart from her Autobiography, one or two of her supernatural tales, and possibly the 'Chronicles of Carlingford', the series for which she was best known, novels and stories set in an English provincial town where life revolves around church and chapel. George Eliot (1819-1880) on the other hand, needs no introduction to today's readers.

In one of her many reviews of the works of her contemporaries, …

Music For Mercer's: The Mercer's Hospital Music Collection And Charity Music In Eighteenth-Century Dublin., Tríona O'Hanlon

Dissertations

This thesis examines and analyses the contents of the Mercer’s Hospital Music Collection. The collection includes fifty manuscript and seven printed volumes of
music containing works by Handel, Greene, Boyce, Purcell, Corelli, Humfrey, Avison, Barsanti, Stanley and Festing. Selected works were performed at the Mercer’s Hospital benefit concerts, established in April 1736 to provide important financial support to the
hospital, which opened on Stephen Street, Dublin in 1734. Mercer’s was the first voluntary Dublin hospital to initiate a series of benefit concerts. The Mercer’s benefit concerts attracted the participation of a wide range of Dublin-based performers, both singers and instrumentalists. …

To Share Or Not To Share: The Impact Of Disclosing Sexuality On Instructor Communication Apprehension, Instructional Effectiveness, And Student Relationships, Justin Rudnick Jan 2012

To Share Or Not To Share: The Impact Of Disclosing Sexuality On Instructor Communication Apprehension, Instructional Effectiveness, And Student Relationships, Justin Rudnick

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Previous research has explored the role LGBTQ instructor sexuality plays in the classroom. However, little research explores the effects of disclosing LGBTQ sexuality on the individual instructor. This study examines how LGBTQ instructors report disclosures of their sexuality to influence their Communication Apprehension, Instructional Effectiveness, and their Relationships with Students. Qualitative interviewing methods were used to survey nine self-identified LGBTQ college instructors from mid-size Midwest universities, and a grounded theory approach was used to identify emergent themes pertaining to LGBTQ instructors' experiences with their sexuality in the classroom. Interviewees reported varying degrees of communication apprehension, instructional effectiveness, and heightened personal …

Obstáculos Contemporáneos En La Percepción Del Ethos Universal En Esa Luna Que Empieza De, Percy Gibson Parra

12th Annual Colloquium

George Snow Hill: A Wpa Artist And His Contributions To Florida And Tampa Bay, Diane M. Craig

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Artist and muralist George Snow Hill was St. Petersburg’s only known link to the Work Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project, an innovative program that paid citizens to creatively chronicle 1930s America. Perhaps Florida’s most prolific New Deal muralist, Hill, and his many works, have remained virtually unknown to most Floridians, and to many in his adopted city. Undoubtedly defined by a charge of visual racism in 1966, Hill’s cultural contributions to the St. Petersburg’s art community have drifted into obscurity. Through a review of his work, especially his murals in Pinellas County, ephemera that included personal correspondence, and newspaper clippings, …

American Art Theatre In The Digital Archive, Patrick Michael Finelli

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

Based on a critical examination, evaluation, and selection of primary and secondary sources related to American art theater that have moved from the private into the public digital realm, Finelli reflects and comments on key issues related to the digital archive and theater historiography. His objective was to analyze the notion of digital archives and consider how accessing materials in electronic form affects the practice of writing history. He hypothesizes that the process of digitizing library and archival materials has a significant affect upon archival elements through their transformation into the digital realm, bringing about change in both an ontological …

Students’ Views Of E-Learning: The Impact Of Technologies On Learning In Higher Education In Ireland, Eileen O'Donnell, Mary Sharp

Books/Book Chapters

Students are the end users of the Information Systems that educators use to enhance students’ learning experiences. The use of technologies in education has altered the ways in which lecturers and students can interact and has expanded the volume of information that students can access. This study was undertaken to obtain students perspectives on the uses of technologies in higher education to assist educators in improving the pedagogical design of e-learning platforms, known as learning management systems. This chapter provides students’ perspectives on the academic use of technologies in two higher education institutions in Ireland. Analysis of the responses received …

Guide To Ms265 El Paso Times Subject Files, Jorge Avila, Carlos Rivera, Sarah Ryan

Finding Aids

The El Paso Times began publication in the spring of 1881 as a weekly newspaper operated by M.W. Carrico & Co. It became a daily paper in 1882 and added Associated Press wire service in 1883. After changing hands several times, the Times was purchased from H. D. Slater in 1928 by Dorrance Roderick and Lindsay Nunn. Nunn sold his interest in 1930, and Dorrance Roderick was the publisher even after the newspaper became part of the Gannett chain in 1972. The Times had a joint operating agreement with the El Paso Herald-Post, an afternoon newspaper, from 1936 until …

Librarians As Improvisers: An Improvisational Approach To Teaching Information Literacy, Anthony Stamatoplos, Edward Trout Jan 2012

Librarians As Improvisers: An Improvisational Approach To Teaching Information Literacy, Anthony Stamatoplos, Edward Trout

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

Using an improvisational approach in the classroom, librarians can address their own predetermined objectives and also respond to unanticipated questions and concerns as they emerge. Lesson plans and learning outcomes are valuable components of information literacy instruction and assessment; however, they need not imply a rigid approach to teaching. Recent scholarship suggests that using techniques from improvisational theater engages students in their learning and facilitates a responsive and collaborative learning environment. Guided by experienced improvisational actors, participants in this workshop will learn principles of improvisation in a fun and lively setting, and explore ways to apply them to their teaching.

Exploring Peer Assessment: Practices And Views Of Esl Learners, Debra Atieno Onono Jan 2012

Exploring Peer Assessment: Practices And Views Of Esl Learners, Debra Atieno Onono

Master of Education

In most Kenyan Secondary schools, assessment of students is high stakes where grading, labeling and league tables take the centre stage. These high stakes tests are formally certified and the certificates determine one’s educational achievements in life and access to employment. There are also school based tests which are ultimately the responsibility of teachers and school administrators. However, these tests are a replica of the national examination papers and do not support student learning. The pedagogical culture is shifting the world over to one that conceptualizes learning as an active contextualized process of constructing knowledge based on personal experiences. In …
