Addressing The Learning Needs At Occupy Dc, Andrew J. Batcher

Capstone Collection

The purpose of this paper is to examine how learning can help the Occupy movement in Washington DC. It explores three questions. What are the learning needs of the movement? What educational content can help meet those needs? And how can education be practiced in a way that most effectively addresses the learning needs within the real world circumstances of the movement? Research methods include participant observation, surveys, interviews, focus groups, literature review, and primary document review. Data was coded into 11 outcome oriented learning needs and 3 educational orientations which are geared towards meeting those needs. This paper is …

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Collaborative activities that reflect ‘ethnicity as provenance’ benefit from collaborative, interdependent relationships among archives, classroom, and community. Examples from Center for Colorado & the West at Auraria Library (University of Colorado Denver) and the Southern Colorado Ethnic Heritage and Diversity Archives and the Voices of Protest Oral History Project (Colorado State University-Pueblo) illustrate collection development practices that advance joint ownership of archival materials by the archives and the originating cultural population. Concluding reflections offer transferable principles for working collaboratively with cultural communities on creation, identification, interpretation, and preservation of photographs, videos, documents, oral histories and ephemeral material reflective of culture, …

The Phantom Author Of An Unfathomable Land: Ali And Nino, Günil Özlem Ayaydin Cebe Jan 2012

The Phantom Author Of An Unfathomable Land: Ali And Nino, Günil Özlem Ayaydin Cebe

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The novel Ali and Nino is considered one of the pioneering texts of modern Azerbaijan literature. The undiminished interest in the novel with its nearly 100 editions or reprints, and translations into 33 languages, indicates its importance as a universal as well as a national narrative. Despite that, there remains the mystery about the identity of its author who published the book under the pseudonym Kurban Said. According to some researchers, the author is Lev Nussimbaum who worked in Berlin as a journalist and an “expert on the Orient” under the name Essad Bey for a decade between the two …

Threnody, Amy Fitzgerald Jan 2012

Threnody, Amy Fitzgerald

English Honors Projects

Vera Anholt thinks of herself simply as a gentile with a conscience. But as a rescuer of Jews during World War II--and, later, the second wife of a Holocaust survivor--Vera faces choices and consequences that are anything but simple. She confronts the moral ambiguities inherent in even her seemingly noble role, the reality of lasting trauma stacked against hope for redemption, and the question of whether her actions ultimately make a difference. This honors thesis, which is also a "song of mourning," explores an overwhelming historical tragedy through the lens of a fictional couple's shared--and unshared--struggles.

Evaluating Human-Robot Implicit Communication Through Human-Human Implicit Communication, Andrew Xenos Richardson Jan 2012

Evaluating Human-Robot Implicit Communication Through Human-Human Implicit Communication, Andrew Xenos Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research is examining ways to make human-robot (HR) communication more natural. Incorporating natural communication techniques is expected to make HR communication seamless and more natural for humans. Humans naturally incorporate implicit levels of communication, and including implicit communication in HR communication should provide tremendous benefit. The aim for this work was to evaluate a model for humanrobot implicit communication. Specifically, the primary goal for this research was to determine whether humans can assign meanings to implicit cues received from autonomous robots as they do for identical implicit cues received from humans. An experiment was designed to allow …

Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi Jan 2012

Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi

Master in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security Professionals Master's Projects

The definition of homeland security and all that it encompasses has been an ongoing discussion since the events of 9/11. As a homeland security professional it has become clear to me that homeland security is not only a federal obligation, but a local priority as well. All events are local and the government cannot be solely responsible for the preparation, response, and resilience of each individual community. The Village of Mamaroneck is a small jurisdiction approximately 30 miles from New York City. The prime threat this Village has faced is inclement weather and severe flooding due to the multiple floodplains …

Viewer Discretion Is Advised: Disconnects Between The Marketplace Of Ideas And Social Media Used To Communicate Information During Emergencies And Public Health Crises, Peter Maggiore Jan 2012

Viewer Discretion Is Advised: Disconnects Between The Marketplace Of Ideas And Social Media Used To Communicate Information During Emergencies And Public Health Crises, Peter Maggiore

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

In a sense, social media has become the ideal manifestation of the "Marketplace of Ideas" (hereinafter "Marketplace") that Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes articulated. The Marketplace concept will be discussed in greater detail below, but in brief, it is the theory that truth will surface over falsehoods when all opinions and ideas are freely expressed, because the value or worth of that opinion or idea will be determined on the market of public opinion. Part I of this Note will examine the Marketplace concept through the works of various legal and philosophical theorists. Chief among them is Frederick Schauer's work …

Investigating A Leadership Fix For A Suboptimal Mix: A Transformational Leadership Intervention For Teams With Incompatible Personalities, Marcus Daniel Weller Jan 2012

Investigating A Leadership Fix For A Suboptimal Mix: A Transformational Leadership Intervention For Teams With Incompatible Personalities, Marcus Daniel Weller

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study uses experimental methodology to examine transformational leadership as a buffering mechanism for problematic personality combinations. 118 German university students comprising 59 dyadic teams participated in a lab-based investigation to examine matched high levels of extraversion within dyadic teams. The presence of transformational leadership (TL) as opposed to a non-leadership intervention was investigated to examine the effects of TL on group members' task performance on both conjunctive and disjunctive tasks. To assess conjunctive task performance, participants performed an employee selection task, and to assess disjunctive task performance participants performed a NASA survival ranking task. Performance was measured against expert …

Waiting For Hohfeld: Property Rights, Property Privileges, And The Physical Consequences Of Word Choice, Jerrold A. Long Jan 2012

Waiting For Hohfeld: Property Rights, Property Privileges, And The Physical Consequences Of Word Choice, Jerrold A. Long

Articles

An important part of our institutional and cultural history is our understanding of a system of property interests. The most common trajectory of land-use regulation appears consistent with a property rights meta-narrative that informs multiple academic disciplines and levels of human interaction. This meta-narrative suggests that all land-use decisions begin with an assumption about the nature and extent of property rights held by potentially affected landowners, and that the ultimate end of any land-use regime is to "protect" those assumed property rights from unwarranted or unjustified intrusion by government. Because the law is a distinct linguistic environment in which word …

Lifting The Veil On Rigorous Rational Basis Scrutiny, Miranda Oshige Mcgowan Jan 2012

Lifting The Veil On Rigorous Rational Basis Scrutiny, Miranda Oshige Mcgowan

Marquette Law Review

In many different cases, the Supreme Court and lower courts have used a rigorous form of rational basis scrutiny very different from the ordinary, deferential rational basis scrutiny taught in constitutional law courses. When invoked, this more rigorous form of rational basis scrutiny has proven fatal to statutes and regulations. Many scholars and courts have described how courts apply it and have defended particular cases in which it has been used. No one, however, has explained just why and when courts will or ought to apply it. This gap is troublesome and pressing. Rigorous rational basis scrutiny is an important …
