Ataraxia: A Modern Platonic Utopia, Jeremy Burton
Ataraxia: A Modern Platonic Utopia, Jeremy Burton
Honors Theses
My research focuses on the effects on children raised according to the guidelines for training the Guardians of the ideal society described in Plato's Republic. I explore this concept creatively in a fictional modern Utopian community like that of B. F. Skinner's Walden Two and support this with firsthand accounts of the attempts to make Skinner's work a reality. Combined with a perspective on education in Plato along with the Hitler Youth program, this framework allows me to analyze how we use ideals and philosophy to justify our actions, and ultimately how human nature confounds our attempts to build paradise.
A Language Without Words: Music As An Agent Of Identity In Brian Friel's Dancing At Lughnasa, Catherine Tetz
A Language Without Words: Music As An Agent Of Identity In Brian Friel's Dancing At Lughnasa, Catherine Tetz
Honors Theses
Music has consistently played a major role in the work of Irish playwright Brian Friel and provides a steady backdrop for Dancing at Lughnasa (1990), a memory play about a family in Northern Ireland struggling to stay together in the August of 1936. This paper examines the function of music within the context of the play to see how it heightens the themes of identity, otherness, and memory. It also examines the history and various genres of selected works from the play to further investigate how Friel's selection of particular songs reflects the emotional states and ideologies of the characters.

Exercise Dependence And Eating Disorders Among College Students, Shelli Meulemans
Honors Theses
Background. Excessive exercise can become an addiction known as exercise dependence (ED). -- Findings. We used the Exercise Scale Test (EDS-21) and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) to assess the prevalence of ED and eating disorders. We discovered that out of 520 participants, 3.3% could be characterized as at-risk for ED, 51.5% as nondependent-symptomatic, and 45.2% as nondependent-asymptomatic. The prevalence of being at-risk for eating disorders was approximately 8%. -- Conclusions. It seems that the prevalence of ED and eating disorders at Andrews University is similar to the general population.

To The Edge And Back Again: Tanzania As A People And A Place, Kylene Cave
Honors Theses
Every two years as part of the May Express program at Andrews University a small group of teachers and administrators take students to Tanzania, Africa on an educational tour. I attended this tour in both 2009 and 2011 and was able to use the knowledge provided by the course work as well as the personal experiences that I encountered in order to shape my own perceptions of Tanzania and its people, and the relationships that exist between their cultural practices and my own. To the Edge and Back Again: Tanzania as a People and a Place attempts to gather these …
God Is Amor: Biblical Teachings For House And Home, Translated From Spanish To English, Melissa Breetzke
God Is Amor: Biblical Teachings For House And Home, Translated From Spanish To English, Melissa Breetzke
Honors Theses
I have transcribed and translated (from Spanish to English) a series of five video sermons by Pastor Homero Salazar to aid him in broadening his evangelistic efforts. While transcription requires structural fluency and a discerning ear, translation demands extensive conceptual consideration. Translators must weigh the tone, formality, intention, and implications of the original message and relay these concepts through linguistic equivalents in an alternate language. Some of the most interesting challenges of this project arose from changing the media from a dialogue-like video to a document for publication, requiring considerable pragmatic adjustments.
Developing An Intracellular Neurobiology Lab Sequence For Use In An Interdisciplinary Neurobiology Course, Aleksandra Kozlova-Harris
Developing An Intracellular Neurobiology Lab Sequence For Use In An Interdisciplinary Neurobiology Course, Aleksandra Kozlova-Harris
Honors Theses
The goal of my research was to evaluate procedures currently used in the Intracellular Leech Lab in order to modify the Neurobiology ZOOL475 Lab to increase the rate of successful intracellular recordings for future Neurobiology students. Two approaches were used: the first was to evaluate the possibility of using a less expensive leech species in order to allow students unlimited attempts at recording from ganglia without budget constraints. The second was to evaluate various raising conditions (water, temperature, and age) to optimize the quality of the leech ganglia. Both approaches provided useful information to improve lab success.
Auditing's Ripple Effect: Divergence After Enron, Kelley Wolff
Auditing's Ripple Effect: Divergence After Enron, Kelley Wolff
Honors Theses
The Enron scandal received considerable attention over the past 10 years (2001-2011), and the fallout from Enron, WorldCom, and Adelphia were severe. Both auditors and accountants lost the trust of the government and the public. This caused the government to intervene by enacting the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and creating the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to oversee the audits of public companies. This study will examine how the differences in perspectives amongst gender, as well as public and GCAS auditors, factors into personal opinions by admistering a research survey and studying literature surrounding the Enron scandal.
Inter-Group Communication During Hurricane Katrina: How Organizational Culture Defeats Coordination, Johanna Nielsen
Inter-Group Communication During Hurricane Katrina: How Organizational Culture Defeats Coordination, Johanna Nielsen
Honors Theses
Interaction between groups can be understood as regulated by two communication theories: Adaptive Structuration theory which describes how a group's resources affect how it solves problems, and Functional Group Decision Making theory which describes the steps groups take to make decisions. When combined into a model, these theories provide a framework for examining how groups use resources in their interaction with each other. Research into both secondary and primary sources identified ten resources groups used to interact with other groups during the crisis response. Careful analysis determined that the Federal, State, and Private agencies' organizational cultures and social identities were …

This applied dissertation was designed to provide additional support services to online undergraduate teacher education students. The students who were enrolled in EDUC 2500 Pre-Enrollment Seminar did not have a supportive learning environment previously. This study was conducted to determine whether adding a mentoring and supportive learning environment leads to student persistence in the course. This research shows that mentoring and supportive learning environments lead to increased graduation rates for the university in the teacher education program and qualified teachers in the school districts if students persist in the first semester online course.
The course assessment survey was sent to …
Indigenous Secondary Education: What Implications For Counsellors Lie In The Stories Of Indigenous Adults, Who As Children, Left Their Home Communities To Attend School?, Suzanne Jenkins
Theses
Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of the peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that the child of a farm worker can become the president of a great nation. Nelson Mandela
Access to a ‘good’ education is often argued as deserving of the highest priority. The available research pertaining to the educational experience of Australian Indigenous students, however, too often reflects a picture of profound disadvantage, particularly in relation to their non-Indigenous counterparts. In 2008, Prime Minister Rudd announced …
Individual Differences In (Non-Visual) Processing Style Predict The Face Inversion Effect, Na Wyer, D Martin, T Pickup, Cn Macrae
Individual Differences In (Non-Visual) Processing Style Predict The Face Inversion Effect, Na Wyer, D Martin, T Pickup, Cn Macrae
School of Psychology
Recent research suggests that individuals with relatively weak global precedence (i.e., a smaller propensity to view visual stimuli in a configural manner) show a reduced face inversion effect (FIE). Coupled with such findings, a number of recent studies have demonstrated links between an advantage for feature-based processing and the presentation of traits associated with autism among the general population. The present study sought to bridge these findings by investigating whether a relationship exists between the possession of autism-associated traits (i.e., as indicated by individuals’“autism quotient” [(AQ) and the size of the FIE. Participants completed an on-line study in which the …
Sensory Imagery In Craving: From Cognitive Psychology To New Treatments For Addiction, J Andrade, J May, Dk Kavanagh
Sensory Imagery In Craving: From Cognitive Psychology To New Treatments For Addiction, J Andrade, J May, Dk Kavanagh
School of Psychology
Sensory imagery is a powerful tool for inducing craving because it is a key component of the cognitive system that underpins human motivation. The role of sensory imagery in motivation is explained by Elaborated Intrusion (EI) theory. Imagery plays an important role in motivation because it conveys the emotional qualities of the desired event, mimicking anticipated pleasure or relief, and continual elaboration of the imagery ensures that the target stays in mind. We argue that craving is a conscious state, intervening between unconscious triggers and consumption, and summarise evidence that interfering with sensory imagery can weaken cravings. We argue that …

Elaborated Intrusion Theory: A Cognitive-Emotional Theory Of Food Craving, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David J. Kavanagh, Marion Hetherington
School of Psychology
A clear understanding of the cognitive-emotional processes underpinning desires to overconsume foods and adopt sedentary lifestyles can inform the development of more effective interventions to promote healthy eating and physical activity. The Elaborated Intrusion Theory of Desires offers a framework that can help in this endeavor through its emphases on the roles of intrusive thoughts and elaboration of multisensory imagery. There is now substantial evidence that tasks that compete for limited working memory resources with food-related imagery can reduce desires to eat that food, and that positive imagery can promote functional behavior. Meditation mindfulness can also short-circuit elaboration of dysfunctional …

An Elementary-To-Middle School Transitional Program And Its Effect On Student Behavior, Kyle Sheer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The transition from elementary to middle school has proven to be difficult for all stakeholders. Reports of increased discipline infractions and truancy, combined with a noticeable drop in overall student achievement, have resulted in numerous attempts to ease the anxieties and frustrations that are characteristic of this transition. Schools often establish transitional programs to prepare incoming middle school students with the skills needed to be successful in a new educational environment. Transitional programs are often very expensive to operate and require an extensive amount of planning. This program evaluation considered 1 specific transitional program that took place during the summer …

Varying Treatment Intensity In A Home-Based Parent And Child Therapy Program For Families Living In Poverty: A Randomized Clinic Trial, Robert A. Fox, Jennifer Carrasco
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This study addressed the question of whether increasing the intensity of a parent and child therapy program would improve results for young children with significant behavior problems from families living in poverty. Children were randomly assigned to either a standard condition or an intensity condition that provided 50% more treatment over a standard 8-week treatment period. Based on multiple parent-report, direct observation, and clinician-report measures of the children and their caregivers, both groups improved on all measures from pretest to posttest and from pretest to follow-up. No differences in outcomes were found between the standard and intensity groups at posttest …

Exploring Living-Learning Communities As A Venue For Men’S Identity Construction., Jody E. Jessup-Anger, Brianne N. Johnson, Matthew R. Wawrzynski
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
THIS QUALITATIVE STUDY EXPLORED how male undergraduate students experienced living-learning community environments. Findings revealed that living-learning communities provided men a "safe haven" from rigid gender role expectations, offered a plethora of involvement opportunities, and fostered relationships with faculty and peers. The findings highlight the potential of living-learning communities to provide men with the support they need to reject rigid gender expectations and develop a healthy identity. Recommendations for practice are discussed.

The Effect Of An Evidence Based Bowel Protocol On Time Taken To Return To Normal Bowel Function In Post Operative Total Hip And Total Knee Replacement Patients, Gail Ross-Adjie
Theses
Total hip and knee replacement operations are one of the most commonly performed orthopaedic procedures in Australia. It is estimated however that up to 65% of patients will experience some degree of opioid-related bowel dysfunction in the post operative period. Often considered a mild and selflimiting problem, constipation can lead to significant morbidity and occasional mortality. Several clinical incidents and a lack of robust evidence to guide bowel management in this cohort was the impetus for this study.
This cluster randomised study sought to evaluate the Murdoch Bowel Protocol©, a simple nursing intervention based on the administration of polyethylene glycol …
Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh
Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh
Theses
Repair and strengthening of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased drastically in recent years. Shear reinforcement in RC beams is typically of a small bar diameter, and hence any shear-damage would result in a severe safety hazard and a catastrophic mode of failure especially under extreme loading events. The present work was initiated to the effectiveness of different composite strengthening systems; namely externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (EB-CFRP), and near surface mounted glass fiber reinforced polymer (NSM-GFRP) to prolong the functional service life of RC beams pre-damaged in shear. It comprised experimental testing and analytical investigation.
The experimental …

Building Situational Stimuli In Assessment Center Exercises: Do Specific Exercise Instructions And Role-Player Prompts Increase The Observability Of Behavior?, Eveline Schollaert, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Little is known about how assessment center exercises might be designed to better elicit job-relevant behavior. This study uses trait activation theory as a theoretical lens for increasing the number of behaviors that can be observed in assessment centers. Two standardized exercise stimuli (specific exercise instructions and role-player prompts) are proposed, and their effects on the observability of candidate behavior are examined. Results showed a significant effect of role-player prompts in increasing both the general number of behavioral observations and the number of behavioral observations related to three out of four dimensions. Specific exercise instructions did not have effects on …
