In her article "Reimagining 'Tense and Tender Ties' in Garcia's Monkey Hunting" Yu-Fang Cho analyses Cristina García's re-narration of transnational histories of the multi-racial, multi-generational Chinese Cuban family in Monkey Hunting (2003) as a critical project that recasts developmental immigrant narratives primarily set in the United States as part of the emerging cultural archive of global migrations. In their article "The Life Writing of Hart, Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service" Henk Vynckier and Chihyun Chang analyze the life and writing of Sir Robert Hart (1835-1911). Hart arrived in China in 1854 and served as Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service 1863-1911. Although Hart disparaged his own role, Jonathan Spence views him as a key adviser to the Qing government. Despite of the historical importance of Hart's texts, of his seventy-seven volume diary only eight of the volumes have been published and the remaining volumes remain largely unexamined. In his article "Cannibalism, Ecocriticism, and Portraying the Journey" Simon C. Estok discusses the ways early modern preoccupation with cannibalism is at once rooted in and reflective of an ecophobic environmental ethics. Looking both at descriptions of metaphoric and literal cannibalism, Estok shows that imagining cannibalism was central to the travel narrative and to its investments in writing the center and the periphery, the human and the nonhuman, the acceptable and the repugnant — binaries which reveal ethical positions, not only toward people, but, more broadly, toward the natural environment. An account of his "returning" journey to the five Caribbean "colonial societies," The Middle Passage constitutes a major turning point in Naipaul's long literary career. Spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) is a rare disease. The principal clinical manifestation of SDAVF is myelopathy, with variable but nonspecific symptoms including progressive weakness of the lower extremities, back pain, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and impotence. Diagnosis is often delayed. Knee pain as the chief complaint of SDAVF is rare. The present casereport describes a 49-year-old man with a history of SDAVF, for which he had twice received endovascular embolization, who presented with profound pain in the right knee when attending the study rehabilitation clinic. This paper investigates the use of metaphor as a valuable tool in encountering contemporary challenges in marketing strategy development. A review of the literature indicates how traditional approaches pay insufficient attention to the fact that marketing strategy development rests largely on the processes of intuitive and symbolic thinking. The first part of the paper establishes creative strategic thinking, which includes these processes as a key imperative in marketing strategy development. Activity Of Enzyme Trypsin Immobilized Onto Macroporous Poly(Epoxy-Acrylamide) Cryogel, W Johnson, Ymm Makame

Bovine pancreatic trypsin has been covalently immobilized onto monolithic polyacrylamide cryogels with epoxy functionality (Epoxy-MPAAGs). The covalent immobilization of trypsin onto Epoxy-MPAAGs was achieved through incorporation of ethylenediamine-glutaraldehyde spacers on the cryogels’ surfaces. The immobilization yield and the influence of pH and temperature conditions on the activity of the immobilized trypsin were assessed by using the hydrolysis of a low molecular weight substrate, N-α-benzoyl-D, L-arginine-p-nitroanilide (BAPNA). Optimal pH and temperature values of 9 and 50 °C, respectively, were established for both the immobilized trypsin and the free trypsin. The Tanzanian rift system salt lakes present significant cultural, ecological, recreational and economical values. Beyond the wealth of minerals, resources of these rift salt lakes include unique wildlife, for instance Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) and Cichlids (Alcolapia spp), which adapted chemically aggressive environments like that of Lake Natron. The general hydrochemical equilibria of these salt lakes is governed by Na+ > K+ >> Ca2+ ~ Mg2+ : (CO32- + HCO3-) > Cl- > SO42-~ F- ionic concentration pattern. Salt accumulation mechanism in these endorheic lakes is considered to base on thermo-mechanical disintegrative stress of the geochemistry sourcing. New Glucopyranosylglyceryl-N-Octenyl Adipate And Bioactivity Of Retro And Condensed Chalcones From Toussaintia Orientalis, Ss Nyandoro, Mhh , Nkunya, Cc Josepha, Jo Odalo, I Sattler

1-(3-β-D-Glucopyranosylglycer-2-yl)-6-N-(oct-2-enyl)-adipate, [orientalin, 1] was isolated as a new metabolite from the polar leaf extracts of Toussaintia orientalis Verdc (Annonaceae), together with the glycoflavonoids afzelin and quercitrin, and the indolidinoids toussaintines A-C. The reversed chalcones 2-hydroxy-3,4,6-trimethoxychalcone (2) and 2-hydroxy-3,4,6- trimethoxydihydrochalcone (3), the condensed chalcone (+)-6a,12a-dihydro-6-phenyl-7-styryl- 6H,7H-[1]benzopyrano[4,3-][l]benzopyran (4), and mixtures of known triterpenoids and steroids were isolated from the less polar extracts of the root and stem bark of the same plant. The structures were established upon detailed analysis of spectroscopic data and other physical parameters. The chemical compositions of non volatile oil extracts from two Annoneceous plant species Monanthotaxis discolor and an undescribed Uvariodendron species which are endemic to Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania were determined by GC-MS. The biological activities of extracts and fractionated samples were also determined. Both methanol and dichloromethane extracts of the root bark of M. discolor showed mild antimicrobial activity and had positive brine shrimp test (BST). The BST test for dichloromethane extract of M. discolor root bark were LC50 41.794 μg/ml and that of methanol extract showed LC50 13.560 μg/ml. In this special issue of the Journal of Public Deliberation, multiple faces of Participatory Budgeting programs are revealed. The articles demonstrate that there is no standardized set of “best practices” that governments are adopting, but there are a broader set of principles that are adapted by local governments to meet local circumstances. Adopt and adapt appears to be the logic behind many PB programs.

If we distinguish phenomenal effects from their noumenal causes, the former being our conceptual(ized) experiences, the latter their grounds or causes in reality "as it is" independent of our experience, then two contradictory positions with regards to the relationship between these two can be distinguished: either phenomena are identical with their noumenal causes, or they are not. Davidson is among the most influential modern defenders of the former position, metaphysical non-dualism. Mencius considers this sort of intervention to be appropriate not just occasionally when dealing with natural disasters, but regularly. Philippine democratization and its decentralization initiatives are studied to understand how it has empowered the local government, and if decentralization played a role in the demise of Philippine higher education, one of the most admired Southeast Asian higher education systems in the 1960s and 1970s. A documentary review of key decentralization policy documents, namely, the 1973 and 1987 Philippine Constitution and the 1991 Local Government Code, together with a review of key Philippine higher education reforms, is conducted. The paper argues that the development of biotechnology policies in the Philippines vis-à-vis rice is enabled by structures and processes that are friendly to the furtherance of social inclusion and equity goals. This occurs in the context of attaining rice self-sufficiency amidst a globalized system and is clearly expressed in the relative density of concepts and provisions related to participation, inclusivity, and transparency in all the relevant policy instruments.
