Bird Profiles, Joshua Feingold Apr 2012

Bird Profiles, Joshua Feingold

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

As part of our undergraduate program in the life sciences, students participate in a wide array of field trips to local and remote locations. These images were obtained during field trips to Everglades National Park, Florida; San Diego, California; and the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. I have been intrigued by bird behavior. These profiles allude to their personality differences and the diversity and beauty of nature. It is my hope that these images also provoke emotional reactions in us.

Characterization And Manipulation Of Nanorods Via An Applied Magnetic Field, Summer Wu '13 Apr 2012

Characterization And Manipulation Of Nanorods Via An Applied Magnetic Field, Summer Wu '13

Student Publications & Research

A remote system capable of controlling the motion of magnetic nanorods was created. Two different systems, electromagnets and magnetic stirrers, were used to create continuously changing magnetic fields thus applying a constant torque to make nanorods rotate as “nano stirbars”. The system was tested on three different types of synthesized nanorods: multi-segmented Ni/Au, pure Ni, and pure Au nanorods. Ni and Au were chosen due to the combination of the magnetic properties of Ni and the biocompatible properties of Au. Variables such as length, shape, and geometries of the nanorods were characterized by a scanning electron microscope and an atomic …

Exploring German And American Modes Of Pedagogical And Institutional Sustainability: Forging A Way Into The Future, Lindon N. Pronto

Pitzer Senior Theses

Rooted deep in Germany's past is its modern socio-political grounding for environmental respect and sustainability. This translates into individual and collective action and extends equally to the economic and policy realm as it does to educational institutions. This thesis evaluates research conducted in Germany with a view to what best approaches are transferable to the United States liberal arts setting. Furthermore, exemplary American models of institutional sustainability and environmental education are explored and combined with those from abroad to produce a blueprint and action plan fitting for the American college and university.

Molecular Analysis And Localization Of A Novel Dictyostelium Discoideum Rab Protein, Rabs, Katherine V. Maringer Apr 2012

Molecular Analysis And Localization Of A Novel Dictyostelium Discoideum Rab Protein, Rabs, Katherine V. Maringer

Theses and Dissertations

Functional analysis and localization of the small GTPase RabS in the slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum, was explored using cell lines that over-express a GFP tagged RabS protein. Based on homology to Rab1, Golgi association was explored. Immunofluoresence analysis of the intracellular localization of this GFP tagged protein revealed that this GFP-Rab had a partial co-localization with the contractile vacuole organelle system. Additionally, when the over-expressed RabS cell lines were exposed to selective biochemical inhibitors, the GFP-Tagged Rab localized with what can be assumed is the Golgi network. This dual localization of Golgi and CV may support a previously proposed connection …

Cleft Lip And Palate Deformity: A Problem Affecting People Around The World, Brittani L. Thompson Apr 2012

Cleft Lip And Palate Deformity: A Problem Affecting People Around The World, Brittani L. Thompson

Senior Honors Theses

Cleft lip and palate deformities are abnormalities most commonly seen in third world countries. There are many ways to repair them, but first it is determined whether the cleft is unilateral or bilateral. Then the procedure is uniquely planned for the specific needs of the patient. The cleft can be determined in the prenatal stages by using 3D sonography, so parents can prepare for how to care for a child who has the deformity. The most important details of the repair procedure are agreed upon from surgeon to surgeon, but there are some differences in procedures and recommendations from one …

The Immigrant Hispanic Population: Perceptions About Cultural Competency In The Healthcare Setting, Cheryl Swanson Apr 2012

The Immigrant Hispanic Population: Perceptions About Cultural Competency In The Healthcare Setting, Cheryl Swanson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Cultural competence has been reported as a means of impacting health disparities in minority populations. The Hispanic population has grown exponentially in the United States accounting for over fifty million people on the latest census report. Continued immigration by persons of Hispanic origin occurs for many reasons offering a challenge to nurses and other healthcare workers to provide culturally competent care. The majority of research on cultural competence and the immigrant Hispanic patient has been conducted from the viewpoint of the healthcare provider. Additionally, most research that has taken into account the perspective of the immigrant Hispanic patient focuses on …

From The Attic To The Cosmos: Myth In The Art Of Anselm Kiefer 1973-2007, Isabel L. Roth Apr 2012

From The Attic To The Cosmos: Myth In The Art Of Anselm Kiefer 1973-2007, Isabel L. Roth

Scripps Senior Theses

Anselm Kiefer was born in Germany, 1945—the year of Adolf Hitler’s suicide, and subsequently, the end of World War II. His own beginnings were shrouded by a national “repression” of history. This repression was at odds with Kiefer’s needs to establish his own origin. For this reason, the spirituality in his earlier work is often overshadowed by its subject—Nazi Germany. This thesis will look back on Kiefer’s work through the lens of mythology in an effort to re-evaluate his earlier art within the context of his works since 1990. From the 1970s to the present, Kiefer has drawn from mythology …

Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatase-1 Prevents The Development Of Tactile Sensitivity In A Rodent Model Of Neuropathic Pain, Christian Ndong, Russell P. Landry, Joyce A. Deleo, Edgar A. Romero-Sandoval Apr 2012

Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatase-1 Prevents The Development Of Tactile Sensitivity In A Rodent Model Of Neuropathic Pain, Christian Ndong, Russell P. Landry, Joyce A. Deleo, Edgar A. Romero-Sandoval

Dartmouth Scholarship

Neuropathic pain due to nerve injury is one of the most difficult types of pain to treat. Following peripheral nerve injury, neuronal and glial plastic changes contribute to central sensitization and perpetuation of mechanical hypersensitivity in rodents. The mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) family is pivotal in this spinal cord plasticity. MAPK phosphatases (MKPs) limit inflammatory processes by dephosphorylating MAPKs. For example, MKP-1 preferentially dephosphorylates p-p38. Since spinal p-p38 is pivotal for the development of chronic hypersensitivity in rodent models of pain, and p-p38 inhibitors have shown clinical potential in acute and chronic pain patients, we hypothesize that induction of …

Ron - The Con In Colorectal Carcinoma, Shikha Tarang, J. Wang Apr 2012

Ron - The Con In Colorectal Carcinoma, Shikha Tarang, J. Wang

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

The recepteur d’origine nantais (RON) is a member of MET family of receptor tyrosine kinase (RTKs), an overexpression of which has been observed in several cancers. The expression of RON gene is required during embryonic development and also plays critical roles in regulating macrophage inflammatory response. In CRC, the overexpression of moderate RON activity contributes to their oncogenic potential by regulating several key processes such as proliferation, motility and resistance to apoptosis. Interestingly, an aberrant RON expression is often associated with the generation of several splice variants with unique transforming activities. The targeting of RON signaling pathway by the use …

Design And Construction Of An Entity Resolution System That Supports Entity Identity Information Management And Asserted Resolution, Eric D. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This work describes the design and construction of an open source, entity resolution system that enables users to assign and maintain persistent identifiers for master data items. Two key features of this system that are not available in current ER systems and that make persistent identification possible are (1) The capture and management of entity identity information (2) Support for user-directed asserted resolution to complement automated direct matching and transitive closure Another important feature of the design is that the system can be easily configured at run-time into any one of four types of entity resolution architectures including * Traditional …

Inhibition Of Injury-Induced Cell Proliferation In The Dentate Gyrus Impairs Cognitive Recovery Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Teresa Daniels Apr 2012

Inhibition Of Injury-Induced Cell Proliferation In The Dentate Gyrus Impairs Cognitive Recovery Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Teresa Daniels

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a robust cellular proliferative response among neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/NPCs) in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. This proliferative effect is thought to contribute to the innate cognitive recovery observed following TBI. Inhibition of hippocampal neurogenesis impairs cognitive function. Furthermore, enhancement of injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis via intraventricular administration of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) improves cognitive function in animals following TBI. In this experiment, we investigated the direct association between injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive recovery utilizing an antimitotic agent, arabinofuranosyl cytidine (Ara-C). In this study, adult rats received a moderate lateral fluid percussion injury …

The Origin Of The 'Mycoplasma Mycoides Cluster' Coincides With Domestication Of Ruminants, Anne Fischer, Beth Shapiro, Cecilia Muriuki, Martin Heller, Christiane Schnee, Erik Bongcam-Rudloff, Edy M. Vilei, Joachim Frey, Joerg Jores

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The 'Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' comprises the ruminant pathogens Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae the agent of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum, Mycoplasma leachii and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri. CBPP and CCPP are major livestock diseases and impact the agricultural sector especially in developing countries through reduced food-supply and international trade restrictions. In addition, these diseases are a threat to disease-free countries. We used a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) approach to gain insights into the demographic history of and phylogenetic relationships among the members of the 'M. …

Quantitative Analysis Of Multiple Charged Large Molecules In Human Or Rat Plasma Using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Matthew Halquist Apr 2012

Quantitative Analysis Of Multiple Charged Large Molecules In Human Or Rat Plasma Using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Matthew Halquist

Theses and Dissertations

Immunoassays have traditionally been employed for the determination of plasma concentration-time profiles for pharmacokinetic studies of therapeutic proteins and peptides. These ligand binding assays have high sensitivity but require significant time for antibody generation (1 to 2 years) for assay development. Despite high sensitivity, these assays suffer from cross-reactivity that can lead to inaccurate results. As an alternative to immunoassays, this dissertation was focused on the development and validation of assays that can be used for quantitative analysis of peptides or proteins in plasma using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Two approaches were considered for measurement of proteins and …
