Significant Differences In Markers Of Oxidant Injury Between Idiopathic And Bronchopulmonary-Dysplasia-Associated Pulmonary Hypertension In Children, Kimberly B. Vera, Donald Moore, English Flack, Michael Liske, Marshall Summar
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
While oxidant stress is elevated in adult forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH), levels of oxidant stress in pediatric PH are unknown. The objective of this study is to measure F2-isoprostanes, a marker of oxidant stress, in children with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension (IPH) and PH due to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We hypothesized that F2-isoprostanes in pediatric IPH and PH associated with BPD will be higher than in controls. Plasma F2-isoprostanes were measured in pediatric PH patients during clinically indicated cardiac catheterization and compared with controls. F2-Isoprostane levels were compared between IPH, PH due …

Occurrence Of Mexab-Oprm Efflux Pump Operon On Septicemic Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Chromosome, Ibtesam Ghadban Auda Al-Grawi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: P. aeruginosa remains an important cause of life-threatening bloodstream infection in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with hematologic malignancies complicated by neutropenia. One of the most worrisome characteristics of P. aeruginosa consists is its low antibiotic susceptibility This low susceptibility is attributable to concerted action of chromosomally-encoded multidrug efflux pumps genes. These genes are often controlled by regulatory gene located on the same operon of efflux pump. One of particular significance is the MexAB - OprM efflux system, which is expressed constitutively, thereby contributing to the well-known intrinsic resistance of this organism to multiple antimicrobials. OBJECTIVE: To detect the …

Is Less Really More?: Determining The Efficacy And Advantages Of Low Dose Chemotherapy, Natalie Toews
Senior Honors Theses
Chemotherapy is the preferred treatment for patients with breast cancer nationwide; however, the dosage and duration of this treatment have come under recent scrutiny. The efficacy of high dose chemotherapy is many times inadequate, and the adverse physical effects resulting from this regimen have a negative holistic impact on the patients. Studies suggest that low dose chemotherapy, through antiangiogenesis, affects the spread of breast cancer carcinomas and may produce less harmful side effects in relation to the heart, brain, and eyes. Thus, oncological research proposes that a low dose regimen improves the patient’s quality of life and may be an …

The Study Of Antibacterial Activity Of Plantago Major And Ceratonia Siliqua, Basma Monjd Abd Razik
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Antibiotics are generally beneficial in treating susceptible microbial infections but such beneficial effects are counter balanced by rampant irrational use. In fact, the misuse of antibiotics leads to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. On the other hand, the consumption of foods contaminated with some pathogenic microorganisms represents a serious health risk to humans. OBJECTIVE: Therefore the present study describes the comparison of antibacterial activity between two plants which are known traditionally by their biological activities and used in Iraqi folk medicine as antidiarrheal. METHODS: Agar – well diffusion method tested antibacterial activities of methanolic crud extracts with different …

The Association Between Adiponectin With Lipid Profile And Troponin In Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients, Ammal Esmaeel Ibrahim
The Association Between Adiponectin With Lipid Profile And Troponin In Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients, Ammal Esmaeel Ibrahim
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Adiponectin is thought to be exclusively synthesized by adipocytes; however, a recent suggestion stated that adiponectin is also synthesized and secreted by human cardiomyocytes. Adipose tissue is increasingly recognized as a key regulator of energy balance, playing an active role in lipid storage and buffering, and synthesizing and secreting a wide range of endocrine products that may be directly involved in the pathogenesis of the complications associated with obesity. So obesity consider the major independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), is the interruption of blood supply to part of the heart, causing some …

Environmental Sustainability From A Social Cost Perspective, James Swaney
Environmental Sustainability From A Social Cost Perspective, James Swaney
Social Cost Workshop
Over a quarter century, efforts to build global environmental governance institutions have been thwarted by ideology and vested interests, while ecological degradation has accelerated and disparities in wealth, living standards and economic opportunities have grown. Nonetheless, the sustainability idea remains appealing and valid: Future generations can be protected from debilitating ecological degradation only if we, the present generation, redirect development to begin restoring ecological balance to key earth systems (e.g., oceans, climate, biodiversity). The social cost perspective (SCP) of institutional economics, rooted in the contributions of Karl Polanyi (1944) and K. William Kapp (1950), provides a framework for thinking about, …
Federal Efforts To Achieve Mental Health Parity: A Step In The Right Direction, But Discrimination Remains, Lucas Quass
Federal Efforts To Achieve Mental Health Parity: A Step In The Right Direction, But Discrimination Remains, Lucas Quass
Legislation and Policy Brief
Prior to the 1970s, many healthcare plans in the U.S. offered benefits without discriminating between mental health and general healthcare coverage. In the 1970s and 1980s, the cost of healthcare increased dramatically and employers eliminated or limited mental health benefits in an attempt to reduce insurance costs. To manage insurance costs, employers began using more cost sharing mechanisms and benefit caps on mental health benefits. However, these limitations were not applied equally to mental health and general health benefits and a coverage disparity was created. Today, insurers often do not provide coverage for mental health on the same terms as …

Real-Time Face Detection And Recognition, Parker Hill, Brendan Morris
College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs
The face has become a popular biometric for identification due to the wide range of features and difficulty in manipulation of the metric. In order to work towards a robust facial recognition system, this work contains a foundation for using the face as a recognition metric. First, faces are detected from still images using a Viola-Jones object detection algorithm. Then, Eigenfaces is applied to the detected faces. The system was tested on face databases as well as real-time feed from a web camera.
Impact Of Sludge Treatment Processes On Estrogen Concentration In Wastewater Sludge, Erica Marti
Impact Of Sludge Treatment Processes On Estrogen Concentration In Wastewater Sludge, Erica Marti
College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs
Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), such as estrogen, are known to be present in the aquatic environment at concentrations that affect fish and other wildlife. For example, juvenile male fish exposed to estrogen will synthesize vitellogenin, which is a female-specific protein. Estrogen exposure is also linked to sex reversal, intersexuality, and inhibition of gonadal growth (Jobling et al., 1996).
Wastewater treatment plants are major contributors of EDCs into the environment. EDCs end up in wastewater as a result of natural excretion from the body or being washed off the skin. WWTPs are not designed to remove these substances. As a result, EDCs …

Predator-Specificity Of Multimodal Alarm Signals In The Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus Carolinensis), Thaddeus R. Mcrae
Predator-Specificity Of Multimodal Alarm Signals In The Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus Carolinensis), Thaddeus R. Mcrae
Open Access Dissertations
Communication is a fundamental biological phenomenon, necessary in many species for successful reproduction, social interactions, and predator avoidance. Understanding animal communication systems is therefore vital to our understanding of biology. One of the core attributes of any signaling system is the information contained in each signal. In this dissertation I first review the literature on the information contained in sciurid alarm calls, and note the dearth of knowledge about the presence or absence of predator-specific alarm calls in arboreal squirrels. Arboreal squirrels are closely related to ground squirrels, which have a variety of alarm calling systems, but seek refuge in …

Co-Adventurers In Discovery: Collaborative Research Between Undergraduate Students And Faculty, Rajeswari Murugan, Evan Haskell
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
There are many opportunities available beyond the classroom for undergraduate students to engage in cutting-edge scholarship. Some of the opportunities include study abroad, internships, and independent study. We strongly suggest that students experience such programs. Independent study courses can serve not only to sharpen the student’s engagement skills with the open-ended questions of current research, but also to enhance his or her own relationship with faculty. In this article we share the experiences of a biology student and a mathematics faculty member coming together as co-adventurers learning from each other about the mechanisms and mathematics involved in cardiac arrhythmia through …
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
The reality television show American Idol has some biases which display themselves in data charts and curves of contestants’ telephone voting patterns. Some of the biases examined include issues of geography and performance order. This paper shows that the format of the show leads to biases in favor of contestants who are from, and have large fan bases in, certain parts of the country. Another major flaw is a bias in favor of contestants who sing later in the show. I show that the order the contestants sing in is not random chance but instead carefully chosen by the producers. …

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Successful automated diagnoses of attention de.cit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) using imaging and functional biomarkers would have fundamental consequences on the public health impact of the disease. In this work, we show results on the predictability of ADHD using imaging biomarkers and discuss the scienti.c and diagnostic impacts of the research. We created a prediction model using the landmark ADHD 200 data set focusing on resting state functional connectivity (rs-fc) and structural brain imaging. We predicted ADHD status and subtype, obtained by behavioral examination, using imaging data, intelligence quotients and other covariates. The novel contributions of this manuscript include a thorough …
