The Paradox Of The Castrato, Sonja Breda Apr 2012

The Paradox Of The Castrato, Sonja Breda

Young Historians Conference

Baroque opera cannot be studied without acknowledging the castrated male singers, or castrati, who drew wild critical acclaim throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy. Even the most impoverished Italians were known to forego their daily bread to witness the arias of the castrati. But what made these singers so incredibly popular? This paper argues that the popularity of the castrato in 18th century Italy was due to the castrato's uniquely paradoxical nature, viewed by the public both as sexual and spiritual. While the prominence of the castrato highlighted a desire for the unusual, the eventual extinction of the …

On The Sacred Disease: The Historical Significance Of Hippocratic Humanism, Rationality And Scientific Procedure, Leah Haykin Apr 2012

On The Sacred Disease: The Historical Significance Of Hippocratic Humanism, Rationality And Scientific Procedure, Leah Haykin

Young Historians Conference

Although many of the Hippocratic Corpus' anatomical, physiological and pathological doctrines have since been superseded, the premise of On the Sacred Disease - that disease is of a physical origin - stimulated the rise of rational, secular, and systematic medicine over magico-religious healing and the recognition of medicine as a true techne, or science. Before the time of Hippocrates, 'pre-scientific' Western medicine was predominantly magico-religious or characterized by magic-based appeals to supernatural beings. In On the Sacred Disease, however, Hippocrates attributes disease to both internal and external factors. Further holding that prognosis should be based on thorough examination, Hippocrates required …

The Mobile Striking Force And Continental Defence, 1948–1955, Sean M. Maloney Apr 2012

The Mobile Striking Force And Continental Defence, 1948–1955, Sean M. Maloney

Canadian Military History

The need to project land force power within the confines of the northern portion of the North American continent may appear, at first glance, ridiculous in today’s world. In the early years of the Cold War, both Canada and the United States gave credibility to a land supported air threat to North America and took steps to meet such a contingency. The Canadian response was to configure the small, almost token, active Canadian Army into an airtransportable formation called the Mobile Striking Force (MSF). Some have suggested that the creation of the MSF and its operations in the 1948–1955 period …

Improving Search In Genetic Algorithms Through Instinct-Based Mating Strategies, Thiago S. Quirino Apr 2012

Improving Search In Genetic Algorithms Through Instinct-Based Mating Strategies, Thiago S. Quirino

Open Access Dissertations

The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a popular approach to search and optimization that has been applied to hundreds of real-world optimization problems across numerous domains of science. The GA describes an iterative search process that seeks to improve the quality of an initially random set of solutions with respect to some user-defined optimization criteria. The components of this iterative search process mimic Darwinian biological evolutionary processes such as mating, recombination, mutation, and survival of the fittest. Over the years, researchers have attempted to improve various components of the GA search process. However, the impact of the mating strategy, which determines …

Structural Violence And Vulnerable Populations: Health And Health Care Utilization Among Black, Female, Sex Workers In Miami, Florida, Leah Marlene Varga Apr 2012

Structural Violence And Vulnerable Populations: Health And Health Care Utilization Among Black, Female, Sex Workers In Miami, Florida, Leah Marlene Varga

Open Access Dissertations

Vulnerable populations are affected by social ills resulting from unjust social, political, and economic systems. The consequences of these structural inequalities may affect health care utilization patterns. I examined the health needs, barriers, and utilization of health care services among a sample of Black, female street-based sex workers in Miami, Florida, while exploring the impact of violence, both physical and structural, on utilization of health care services. To do this, both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied. I used focus group data and a grounded theory approach to illuminate health care experiences and the relationship between structural violence and health …

Mangroves On The Move: Predictions Of Storm Surge Effects On Coastal Vegetation, Jiang Jiang Apr 2012

Mangroves On The Move: Predictions Of Storm Surge Effects On Coastal Vegetation, Jiang Jiang

Open Access Dissertations

The landward coastal zones of the low-lying habitats are characterized by sharp ecotones between salinity-tolerant (halophytic) vegetation types, such as mangroves, and salinity-intolerant (glycophytic) vegetation types, such as freshwater marsh and hardwood hammocks. Empirical studies show a gradual landward migration of these ecotones in some areas, due to sea level rise (SLR), and evidence in some areas of rapid change from glycophytic to halophytic vegetation, possibly as regime shifts resulting from salinity overwash from storm surges. In this dissertation work, the plausibility of storm surge related regime shifts of glycophytic vegetation was investigated using a coupled hydrological and ecological simulation …

Role Of Deimination For Protein Synthesis In Neuronal Cells, Di Ding Apr 2012

Role Of Deimination For Protein Synthesis In Neuronal Cells, Di Ding

Open Access Dissertations

Deimination refers to conversion of protein-bound arginine into citrulline. In contrast to global hyper-deimination in the brain and eyes, we have found local hypo-deimination in the retinal ganglion cell layer of patients and in a transgenic mouse model of multiple sclerosis. REF, an RNA and export binding protein, was specifically found to undergo loss of deimination in multiple sclerosis, resulting in functional changes in RNA binding. mRNAs for SNARE complex and mitochondrial ATPase complex are enriched by deiminated REF. We confirmed the presence of REF in dendritic site and mitochondrial surface. Only the deiminated form of REF interacts with the …

Gender Identity Disorder: An Unethical Diagnosis Of Normal Human Diversity, Julia Churchill Schoellkopf, Jasmine Mena Apr 2012

Gender Identity Disorder: An Unethical Diagnosis Of Normal Human Diversity, Julia Churchill Schoellkopf, Jasmine Mena

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is very unique among the other disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) because the treatment is used to confirm the alleged disordered belief (Ross 2009). All other disorders in the DSM-IV-TR are defined as the treatment altering the disordered belief and removing the symptoms, not reinforcing them as GID does (Ross 2009). This contradictory nature of the diagnosis has received lots of criticism from professionals over the years and many have offered alternatives.

Edaphic Adaptation Maintains The Coexistence Of Two Cryptic Species On Serpentine Soils, Jenn M. Yost, Teri Barry, Kathleen M. Kay, Nishanta Rajakaruna Apr 2012

Edaphic Adaptation Maintains The Coexistence Of Two Cryptic Species On Serpentine Soils, Jenn M. Yost, Teri Barry, Kathleen M. Kay, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

• Premise of the study: Divergent edaphic adaptation can contribute to reproductive isolation and coexistence between closely related species, yet we know little about how small-scale continuous edaphic gradients contribute to this phenomenon. We investigated edaphic adaptation between two cryptic species of California wildflower, Lasthenia californica and L. gracilis (Asteraceae), which grow in close parapatry on serpentine soil.

• Methods: We reciprocally transplanted both species into the center of each species’ habitat and the transition zone between species. We quantified multiple components of fitness and used aster models to predict fitness based on environmental variables. We sampled soil across the …

2-Allylphenyl Glycosides As Complementary Building Blocks For Oligosaccharide And Glycoconjugate Synthesis, Hemali D. Premathilake, Alexei V. Demchenko Apr 2012

2-Allylphenyl Glycosides As Complementary Building Blocks For Oligosaccharide And Glycoconjugate Synthesis, Hemali D. Premathilake, Alexei V. Demchenko

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The O-allylphenyl (AP) anomeric moiety was investigated as a new leaving group that can be activated for chemical glycosylation under a variety of conditions, through both direct and remote pathways. Differentiation between the two activation pathways was achieved in a mechanistic study. The orthogonal-type activation of the AP moiety along with common thioglycosides allows for the execution of efficient oligosaccharide assembly. © 2012 Premathilake and Demchenko.

Protein 14-3-3 Eta Is Essential For Normal Meiotic Spindle Assembly In Mouse Eggs, Santanu De, Shawn Davis, Daniel Letwin, Cyrus Mozena, Douglas Kline Apr 2012

Protein 14-3-3 Eta Is Essential For Normal Meiotic Spindle Assembly In Mouse Eggs, Santanu De, Shawn Davis, Daniel Letwin, Cyrus Mozena, Douglas Kline

Biology Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The 14-3-3 proteins constitute a family of conserved, acidic proteins in a variety of organisms, regulating important intracellular events including cell cycle control, apoptosis, signal transduction and embryonic development. However, little is known about the functions of 14-3-3 in mammalian reproduction. There are seven mammalian isoforms of 14-3-3 (beta, gamma, epsilon, eta, zeta, tau/theta and sigma) encoded by different genes. We previously reported accumulation and co-localization of a specific isoform of 14-3-3, namely 14-3-3 eta, in the region of meiotic spindle apparatus in mouse eggs. To determine the role of 14-3-3 eta, we microinjected mouse oocytes with a translation-blocking morpholino …

The impact of synthetic amyloid β (1–42) (Aβ1–42) oligomers on biophysical properties of voltage-gated potassium channels Kv 1.3 and lipid bilayer membranes (BLMs) was quantified for protocols using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as solvents prior to initiating the oligomer formation. Regardless of the solvent used Aβ1–42 samples contained oligomers that reacted with the conformation-specific antibodies A11 and OC and had similar size distributions as determined by dynamic light scattering. Patch-clamp recordings of the potassium currents showed that synthetic Aβ1–42 oligomers accelerate the activation and inactivation kinetics of Kv 1.3 current with no significant effect …
