The Horizon Of Happiness, Benjamin D. Gilbert
The Horizon Of Happiness, Benjamin D. Gilbert
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis is not intended for those who regard practical problems as something to be talked about. It is not for those who believe that every question has an objective, absolute, or interpretable answer. It is not intended for the individual who knows what happiness is, in that the very definition of happiness is not to be found; at best only suggested. It is not intended solely for Eastern thought. It is not intended solely for Western thought - it is intended for both. Most importantly, this thesis attempts to exclude the esoteric language common in the philosophical discipline. Arthur …
Perception Versus Reality: Assessing The Academic Experiences Of The Uno Immigrant Community, Fahret Muminovic
Perception Versus Reality: Assessing The Academic Experiences Of The Uno Immigrant Community, Fahret Muminovic
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of my study is to compare the academic experiences of international students with those of domestic students at the University of New Orleans (UNO). Specifically, I aimed the study towards determining international students’ perceptions and expectations of UNO, and assessing whether or not UNO’s ability to meet their expectations had an impact on student success or failure at UNO. To test this, I asked various international and domestic students to respond to a survey consisting of both open-ended and multiple choice questions. The open-ended questions were designed to capture the student experiences on expectations, academic atmosphere, and overall …
Characterization Of Ubiquitin/Proteasome-Dependent Regulation Of Hap2/3/4/5 Complex In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Arielle Ruth Hunter
Characterization Of Ubiquitin/Proteasome-Dependent Regulation Of Hap2/3/4/5 Complex In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Arielle Ruth Hunter
Senior Honors Theses
The Hap2/3/4/5 complex is a heme-activated, CCAATT binding, global transcriptional activator of genes involved in respiration and mitochondrial biogenesis in the yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Hap4 is the regulatory subunit of the complex and its levelsdetermine the activity of the complex. Hap4 is known to play a signaling role in response toenvironmental conditions; however, little is known about the regulation of Hap4 levels or how it responses to a cell’s functional state. The activity of the Hap2-5 complex is known to be reduced in respiratory-deficient cells. In Liu Lab, it has previously been found that a link between Hap4 stability, …
Gender Differences In Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity To Stress, Brittany Verret
Gender Differences In Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity To Stress, Brittany Verret
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to disentangle the psychobiological mechanisms and social-evaluative conditions that mediate the process by which the Autonomic Nervous System reacts in male and female humans. We used the original Trier Social Stress Test, as well as two modifications to this original social stressor: a punishment modification and a reward modification. We obtained measures of autonomic (heart rate and respiratory sinus arrhythmia; HR and SA respectively) reactivity before, during and after the stress test. To distinguish the contribution of the different modifications and any additional difference in reactivity due to gender, the participants were randomly separated …

Integrated Management Of Common Reed Along The Platte River In Nebraska: Control, Timing, Water Use, And Economic Analysis, Ryan E. Rapp
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There are two biotypes of common reed, which includes the native common reed (Phragmites australis subsp. americanus) and non-native (invasive) common reed (Phragmites australis subsp. australis). The non-native biotype of common reed has invaded wetland habitats in many states of the US, including Nebraska.
Three studies, disking followed by herbicide, mowing followed by herbicide, and herbicide followed by mechanical treatment were initiated in 2008 in Nebraska. The objective was to evaluate common reed control along the Platte River using an integrated management. Herbicide followed by mechanical treatment had excellent control (≥92%) with all treatments except glyphosate applied …
Biophilic Design At Pomona College: An Analysis Of The New Sontag And Pomona Residence Halls, John W. Hasse
Biophilic Design At Pomona College: An Analysis Of The New Sontag And Pomona Residence Halls, John W. Hasse
Pomona Senior Theses
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (or LEED-NC) has become one of the most commonly used green building standards during the turn of the 21st century. While many champion LEED-NC, certain architects and academics believe that its low-environmental impact design approach toward green building isolates people from nature and thus cannot achieve sustainable development over the long-term. Pomona College’s green buildings, including its newest LEED Platinum certified Sontag and Pomona Residence Halls, exemplify this fact, as their designs fail to communicate their sustainable goals or inspire sustainable behavior. By examining the LEED-NC standards, the history …
Biologically-Derived Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: A Cleaner Alternative For Solar Energy, Erika S. Falsgraf
Biologically-Derived Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: A Cleaner Alternative For Solar Energy, Erika S. Falsgraf
Pomona Senior Theses
This project employs the biological compounds hemin, melanin, and retinoic acid as photoactive dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes are environmentally and economically superior to the standard ruthenium-based dyes currently used in DSSCs because they are nontoxic and widely available. Characterization by linear sweep voltammetry yielded averaged maximum overall conversion efficiency values of 0.059% for retinoic acid, 0.023% for melanin, and 0.015% for hemin. Absorption spectra of hemin and retinoic acid suggest that they would complement each other well when used in tandem in one cell because hemin has a secondary maximum absorption peak at 613nm and retinoic …

Promoting Healthy Body Image In College Men: An Evaluation Of A Psychoeducation Program, Justin Henderson
Promoting Healthy Body Image In College Men: An Evaluation Of A Psychoeducation Program, Justin Henderson
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Current psychological research indicates that men are increasingly dissatisfied with their bodies (e.g., McCabe & Ricciardelli 2004; Olivardia, Pope, Borowiecki, & Cohane, 2004). The consequences of body image concerns range from mild discontent (e.g., body dissatisfaction) to the more pathological (e.g., muscle dysmorphic disorder, steroid use, and eating disorders). College-age men are at particular risk of body image disturbances. Drawing from body image research and theory, a one session prevention intervention was designed for college men to address this growing concern. The prevention intervention was intended to serve as a preliminary step into men’s body image prevention programming. The intervention …
The Elephant (Or Donkey) In The Room: Political Ideology And News Comprehension, Matthew T. Mehrhoff
The Elephant (Or Donkey) In The Room: Political Ideology And News Comprehension, Matthew T. Mehrhoff
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This paper looks at the influence of ideological schemas on comprehension of news articles. Schema theory pervades psychological explanations for conceptualizing and comprehending the world. While schemas, or mental organizational structures, are essential for comprehending information, they can also be misapplied, leading to a variety of errors in understanding, with particular application in comprehension of political concepts and the news. This paper looks to at how level of congruence between the political ideology of the individual and the tone of a news article affect comprehension levels. Undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln took a reading comprehension task for two …
Examining The Covariance Of Political And Religious Beliefs Within Individuals And Across Generations, Amanda Balzer
Examining The Covariance Of Political And Religious Beliefs Within Individuals And Across Generations, Amanda Balzer
Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The political and religious are demonstrably intertwined in American politics and within the preferences of individual citizens. This dissertation has attempted to examine possible theoretical reasons for the overlap and sources of development of these belief systems within individuals and across generations. In sum, different Moral Foundations are associated with different preferences for organizing society and approaching religion; grandparents, parents and children share many political and religious beliefs, though not all Moral Foundations; and genetics influence part of the variance on religious and political preferences and part of their overlap is due to a shared genetic path. Most scholarship exploring …
Validation Of Thermal Processing To Control Salmonella Spp. And Clostridium Perfringens During Prime Rib Preparation From Intact And Non-Intact Meat, Maria A. Calle
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Beef prime rib is a delicacy cooked at low temperatures for long period and extended hot holding prior to consumption. Due to the potential survival and outgrowth of foodborne pathogens, this process may pose a public health risk. Considering an increase in the availability of non-intact beef, the microbial safety of the preparation of prime rib from intact and mechanically tenderized beef was evaluated.
In the first study, lethality of the prime rib (from intact and non-intact, blade tenderized beef) cooking process to Salmonella spp. was evaluated. Boneless beef rib eye was surface inoculated with a five-strain cocktail of Salmonella …
An Evaluation Of Stocking And Habitat Influences On Channel Catfish In Lentic Ecosystems Of The Great Plains, Lindsey K. Chizinski
An Evaluation Of Stocking And Habitat Influences On Channel Catfish In Lentic Ecosystems Of The Great Plains, Lindsey K. Chizinski
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus is an important sport fish, particularly in the Great Plains. In Nebraska, a majority of anglers target channel catfish, and fishing activities are a vital part of the state’s economy. Lentic water bodies provide the primary fishing opportunity for catfish anglers in Nebraska. Despite the popularity and economic importance of channel catfish, little is known of its population dynamics or habitat requirements, and existing studies often profile river populations. Current standards for sampling channel catfish in lentic systems often yield inadequate catch to assess populations. The objective of this study was to utilize a recently developed …
Understanding Of The Hydrologic Connections Between Wide-Channel And Adjacent Aquifers Using Numerical And Field Techniques, Cheng Cheng
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Streambed sedimentary structure plays a vital role in controlling the interactions between surface water and groundwater. In the study, three rivers -the Big Blue River, the Little Blue River, and the lower reach of the Platte River in Nebraska were chosen to characterize the shallow streambed for the two types of rivers (braided and meandering rivers) and investigated the variations of the streambed electrical and hydraulic conductivities with depth. In-situ and laboratory permeameter tests were conducted to determine streambed hydraulic conductivity up to 20 m below the channel surface in the three rivers. Additionally, the electrical conductivity logs were obtained …
Comparison Of Methods And Corn Root Types For Efficient Extraction Of Endoparasitic Nematodes, Jae L. Behn
Comparison Of Methods And Corn Root Types For Efficient Extraction Of Endoparasitic Nematodes, Jae L. Behn
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Endoparasitic nematodes annually reduced the yield of corn in the United States. Pratylenchus spp. and Hoplolaimus spp. are endoparasitic nematode genera that parasitize corn in the Midwest. Previous research has shown nematode population densities to be highly variable and extraction methods may not provide consistent results. In order to determine more consistent and time efficient results, comparisons were made between four standard nematode extraction techniques for preferences of nematode genera for extraction method, corn root type, and extraction time. The extraction methods evaluated were aeration-incubation, a modified Baermann funnel, Seinhorst’s mister, and shaker incubation. Research plots were established at two …
Stocking Density Affects Trampling And Use Of Vegetation On Nebraska Sandhills Meadow, Jordan R. Johnson
Stocking Density Affects Trampling And Use Of Vegetation On Nebraska Sandhills Meadow, Jordan R. Johnson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ultrahigh stocking density (113,000 kg·ha-1 to as high as 1 million kg·ha-1 of beef) or mob grazing has been suggested to build soil, increase forage production and plant diversity, and improve grazing distribution compared to less intensive grazing systems. Experimental evidence does not completely support such conclusions. The overall focus of this research is based on the approach of building soil by optimizing above ground plant growth coming in contact with soil surface by trampling 60% of above ground plant growth. The objective of the study was to compare the effect of mob grazing and simple rotational grazing …
Rankl And Osteoprotegerin Levels In Response To Orthodontic Forces, Katherine Ann Hart D.D.S.
Rankl And Osteoprotegerin Levels In Response To Orthodontic Forces, Katherine Ann Hart D.D.S.
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Orthodontic tooth movement is mediated by interactions between PDL cells and those of the alveolus. One protein—the receptor activator nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)—is critical for osteoclastogenesis, and osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a decoy ligand that competitively inhibits RANKL. A higher RANKL/OPG ratio is associated with areas of bone resorption, while a lower ratio occurs in areas of bone deposition and homeostasis. There have been almost no clinical studies of RANKL and OPG expression in human subjects undergoing orthodontic tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in the levels of RANKL and of OPG expression in …
A Secular Increase In The Tempos Of Tooth Formation: 1980-2010, Kevan Michael O'Neill
A Secular Increase In The Tempos Of Tooth Formation: 1980-2010, Kevan Michael O'Neill
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction: Improved environments in the U.S. have resulted in taller, larger, and heavier children and adults compared to past generations. Studies of other skeletal-dental dimensions have shown increases across generations, and our perception is that teeth now are forming faster. The purpose of this study is to test for a secular trend towards faster tempos of tooth mineralization in a sample of U.S. white adolescents over the past quarter century (1980-85 to 2005-10).
Materials: Two cohorts of 200 children each were identified, each with an age range of 10-to- 15 years, one group from 1980-85 and the more recent group …
Pronthocyanidin-Rich Cranberry-Fractioninduced Alteration Of Periodontal Pathogen Lipopolysaccharide Functions, Vreiti Sangha
Pronthocyanidin-Rich Cranberry-Fractioninduced Alteration Of Periodontal Pathogen Lipopolysaccharide Functions, Vreiti Sangha
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The cranberry (species: Vaccinium macrocarpon, family: Ericaceae) is a polyphenolicrich berry fruit native to North America and exhibits numerous beneficial properties for human health, such as inhibition of human cancer cell line proliferation and prevention of urinary tract colonization by bacterial pathogens. The proanthocyanidin rich cranberry fraction has long been speculated to possess the capacity to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators by LPSstimulated macrophages and gingival fibroblasts and to inhibit host extracellular matrix destructive enzyme production and activity.
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of cranberry non dialyzable material (NDM), which was shown to be …
Oropharyngeal Airway Volume Following Orthodontic Treatment: Premolar Extraction Versus Non-Extraction, Thomas Patrick Shannon
Oropharyngeal Airway Volume Following Orthodontic Treatment: Premolar Extraction Versus Non-Extraction, Thomas Patrick Shannon
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Orthodontic correction of tooth size versus arch size discrepancy (TSASD) can be achieved with two distinct methods of treatment. The first involves the extraction of teeth to gain the space needed for tooth alignment. The second relies on arch expansion to gain the space needed for correction. In recent decades, arguments for and against the extraction of teeth for orthodontic purposes have become increasingly important, particularly in regards to oropharyngeal airway size. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a decrease in oropharyngeal dimensions following the extraction of four premolars and subsequent orthodontic therapy. Methods: …
Sediment Removal From The San Gabriel Mountains, Mary C. Ferguson
Sediment Removal From The San Gabriel Mountains, Mary C. Ferguson
Pitzer Senior Theses
The issue of sediment removal from the San Gabriel Mountains has been a complex issue that has created problems with beach replenishment, habitat destruction and the need to spend millions of dollars at regular intervals to avoid safety hazards. Most recently 11 acres of riparian habitat, including 179 oaks and 70 sycamores, were removed for sediment placement. Other sites including Hahamongna Watershed Park and La Tuna Canyon also face a similar fate. This thesis questions: How did we get to this point of destroying habitat to dump sediment which is viewed as waste product? What are the barriers for creating …

Exploring Mdma And Its Therapeutic Potential, Michael Christian
Exploring Mdma And Its Therapeutic Potential, Michael Christian
HIM 1990-2015
The clinical application of MDMA has long been an issue of great interest for doctors, counselors, researchers, and users alike. Originally synthesized by a pharmaceutical company and subsequently tested on military personnel, the drug was then used by many clinicians and physicians prior to the DEA's strict regulation of the drug, which began in the mid 1980s (Mithoefer et al, 2010). The DEA has classified MDMA a "Schedule 1" drug, which means that it among the most controlled substances, a fact which has hindered the progress of research. For a detailed explanation of the DEA's scheduling of controlled substances, please …
Gold (Iii) Macrocycles Are Dna Intercalators That Inhibit Topoisomerase I And Ii, Alexander Fagenson
Gold (Iii) Macrocycles Are Dna Intercalators That Inhibit Topoisomerase I And Ii, Alexander Fagenson
HIM 1990-2015
Human Topoisomerase IB (TOP1) and Topoisomerase II? (TOP2?) are essential nuclear enzymes that control DNA topology during DNA replication, gene transcription and cell division. These enzymes carry out their catalytic function by making transient single-strand (type I) or double-strand (type II) breaks in the DNA. In vivo, these complexes are short-lived but can be exploited by anti-cancer drugs to mechanistically kill cancer cells. Two general classes of compounds can kill cancer cells through a topo-targeted mechanism. Interfacial Poisons (IFPs) act at the enzyme-DNA interface to inhibit the religation reaction, resulting in the accumulation of DNA double-stand breaks (DSBs) in the …
Design, Construction, And Characterization Of The Ysgr Minimal Codon Fab Library For Chaperone-Assisted Rna Crystallography, Sean Holmes
HIM 1990-2015
Of the entire human genome, 90% of all genetic information is transcribed but only a fraction of that subsequent RNA is translated into proteins. RNAs which are not translated into proteins are deemed non-coding RNAs. Little is known about this large category of noncoding RNAs, although they perform a variety of functions within the cell. RNA crystallography is used to study RNA tertiary structure, which gives insight to the function of these non-coding RNAs. However, complications associated with RNA crystallography arise due to RNA's lack of surface functional group diversity, flexible tertiary structure, and conformational heterogeneity. A novel technique, Chaperone-assisted …
Determination Of The Biological Sex Of Juveniles Based Upon The Odontometrics Of The Primary Dentition, Kendall Mccollough
Determination Of The Biological Sex Of Juveniles Based Upon The Odontometrics Of The Primary Dentition, Kendall Mccollough
HIM 1990-2015
Sex determination in human skeletal remains is difficult under the most ideal circumstances; however, in juvenile skeletal remains it is nearly impossible. Currently no accepted techniques exist to identify the biological sex of the juvenile skeleton, other than, when possible, DNA. Thus, developing an accessible and non-destructive technique would benefit both the field of Forensic Anthropology and Bioarchaeology. The ability to provide a quick and accurate determination of sex would greatly expedite the identification process in any case where juvenile skeletal remains are involved. This project aims to establish an accessible and non-destructive method for determining the sex of juvenile …
Health Care Providers' Perspectives On Male Involvement In Their Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Needs, Lilian Milanes
Health Care Providers' Perspectives On Male Involvement In Their Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Needs, Lilian Milanes
HIM 1990-2015
Young men are at the greatest risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within the U.S. male populations, yet are the least likely to make a sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care visit. Clinical approaches in these areas that include the outreach to and the involvement of male partners of female patients can prove particularly useful in expanding SRH care to men and can also improve health outcomes for women who have sex with men. In this study I examined UCF's healthcare provider's approaches to educate and involve men (between the ages of 18 and 30) and male partners of …
Determination Of The Hydrogen Peroxide Concentration In Rotenone Induced Dopaminergic Cells Using Cyclic Voltammetry And Amplex Red, Kishan Patel
HIM 1990-2015
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition that affects millions of people worldwide. The exact etiology of PD is unknown. However, it is well established that environmental factors contribute to the onset of PD. In particular, chemicals such as the insecticide Rotenone have been shown to increase the death of dopaminergic (DA) neurons by increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have been shown to be elevated above basal levels in PD patients. Currently, to measure H2O2 concentrations, a commercially available (Amplex® Red) fluorescent assay is used. However, the assay has limitations: it is …
Embodied Abstraction In Cinema Virtual Prosthesis And Forests Of Light, Jon M. Perez
Embodied Abstraction In Cinema Virtual Prosthesis And Forests Of Light, Jon M. Perez
HIM 1990-2015
Our impressions of this lifeworld are contingent upon our ability to see (in every conflicting meaning of the word). This paper reviews a body of scholars who often share disparate, "incompatible" ontological commitments in effort to examine how their ordering of concepts may reveal a deeper fluidity and permeability between all states of inquiry, creation and investigation into Being and Time. It begins with perspective, examining our subjective presence in the context of the camera apparatus and considers how the mirroring of mechanical instrumentation, namely the rotary shutter and optics of the camera has limited the true function of the …
