From The Margins To The Forefront: Tillie Olsen's Mediation As Figure And Author, Katelynn Deluca
From The Margins To The Forefront: Tillie Olsen's Mediation As Figure And Author, Katelynn Deluca
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tillie Olsen's life experiences and self-identification as a working class woman provide a strong basis for analyzing her fiction as partly autobiographical. As she wrote, she developed her position as a recognized and award winning author into that of a literary mediator for socially marginalized subjects, actively working to represent certain conditions of exclusion due to social, racial, economic, and sexual factors during the 1970's and 1980's. Through analysis of her fiction and non-fiction texts, her use of modernist writing techniques, her purpose as a writer, and her impact on the literary canon, it becomes possible to see how she …

Matters of science traditionally have been looked at from two sociological perspectives. The Sociology of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) argues that science is similar to other socially constructed phenomena, and is a product of context. From this perspective, science and culture have an inextricable relationship. World Polity Theory (WPT), on the other hand, makes the argument that science is a rationalistic entity that exists outside of cultural forces, and brings societies from backward thinking to modern thinking. Taken together, WPT and SSK have explained many of the sociological features of scientific development, sometimes explaining different aspects of the same phenomenon. However, …

The Regulation Of Neutrophil Function By The Vitamin D Binding Protein (Dbp)., David Michael Habiel
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Vitamin D binding protein (DBP), also called Gc globulin, is an abundant plasma protein belonging to the albumin gene family. DBP is primarily known for its role in the transport of vitamin D metabolites in the blood and extracellular fluids, and as an actin scavenger in the circulation. DBP also has been shown to be a chemotactic cofactor for the complement activation peptide C5a, and a deglycosylated form (DBP-MAF) has been shown to activate macrophages and osteoclasts in vitro. The in vivo relevance and the mechanism behind the chemotactic cofactor function of DBP is not known. In this report, a …

This thesis is a tying together of literary, philosophical, art historical, and personal cords into a cohesive and in-depth investigation of my recent work. This chronological study of my more mature or realized works from the past three years is broken down into three principal areas of focus: sculptural installations, video installations and drawings. After establishing a personal and philosophical foundation, the architectonic, theatrical, cinematic and physiological structures represented in these works are addressed with regard to formal and conceptual concerns. I address the transition of my identity as a painter to that of an artist working with video installation …

Advanced Laser Patterning Of A Cylindrical Sample, David Hubert
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The function of this thesis is the implementation of a four axis motion system to an Infrared Laser for micromachining applications. The ultimate goal of this project is to assemble a system that allows a user to create a two dimensional pattern that is then processed onto a cylindrical surface by means of a focused laser spot with adjustable speed and radiation source control. This generated system will then be used to examine the interaction between the laser and the material based on different laser powers, frequencies and processing speeds. This interaction will be examined on the surface of the …
Epigenetic Regulations And Promoter Characterization Of Cerig (Cancer Endoplasmic Reticulum Gene-Kiaa1199), Cem Kuscu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Although human genome project is complete, the biological function of most genes remains obscure. In this thesis project, the regulatory mechanisms of a novel endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident protein identified by a PCR-subtraction hybridization technique, designated as Cancer ER Invasion Gene (CERIG), is investigated. CERIG is found to be highly expressed in human invasive breast cancer specimens examined by immunohistochemistry and real-time RT-PCR. This up-regulation of CERIG is associated with poor prognosis of patients with breast cancer assessed by a DNA microarray data-mining approach from three publicly available cohorts containing a total of 696 breast cancer patients. In study of …

Much Ado About Antibacterials: Dynamics And Drug Design, Kanishk Kapilashrami
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The post genomic era has led to a glut of new putative targets. However, there is a serious dearth of novel chemotherapeutics. It has become clear in recent years that apart from optimizing the thermodynamics of a drug-target interaction, a cell-wide understanding of a drug's mode of action is indispensable to prevent the attrition commonly observed in the drug discovery pipeline. The type II fatty acid biosynthesis (FASII) pathway is a validated target for antibacterial drug design. In this study we focus on two targets of the bacterial FASII; a trans-2-enoyl-ACP reductase and a &beta-ketoacyl-ACP synthase, both essential for bacterial …

American Scheherazades - Auto-Orientalism, Literature And The Representations Of Muslim Women In A Post 9/11 U.S. Context, Martina Koegeler
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The genre of Arab American novels has experienced a veritable boom in the last decade, which opens up a wide field of questions concerning the aesthetics and politics of Arab American literature in a post 9/11 U.S. context. In my thesis, I propose that Arab/Muslim American women writers employ varying forms of auto-orientalism to gain access to the U.S. literary market via citation of orientalist tropes and thus actively participate in the majority discourses surrounding Islam, Muslim women and Americanness. Citation of established orientalist tropes provides access to publication by way of its mutual legibility by majority discourses and minority …

Strong-Field Dissociative Ionization As A Probe Of Molecular Dynamics And Structure, Marija Kotur
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We present work on strong-field ionization of polyatomic molecules. Strong-field ionization has been in focus of recent research efforts in ultrafast atomic, molecular and optical science, due to its role in the generation of attosecond pulses and as a probe of both nuclear and electronic dynamics, and in imaging of molecular orbitals. Ultrafast relaxation of excited state DNA and RNA bases, instrumental to their photostability, was tracked using strong-field dissociative ionization. Relaxation through multiple pathways has been observed and interpreted in terms of the excited state wavepacket dynamics. The example of cytosine is presented in detail. The electronic dynamics associated …
Interfacial Polymerization On Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Membrane As A New Pathway For Fabrication Of Thin Film Nanocomposite Membrane, Zhi Rui Mo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Conventional thin film nanocomposite (TFNC) membranes are based on porous membranes produced by the phase inversion method. The top barrier layer in these membranes has smaller pores with a torturous pathway and together with fairly low porosity for the supporting layer, resulting in a relatively low flux. In this study, a high flux ultra-filtration cellulose nanofiber-based (CN) membrane which consists of a three-tier composite structure, consisting of a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber top layer, an electrospun poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) scaffold and a non-woven polyethylene terephthalate (PET) support was used as a substrate for the thin film nanocomposite membrane preparation. The properties of …

In this thesis I examine the progression of my artistic practice to be one that is both culturally and community oriented. By being introspective about my own roots and heritage, I become informed to draw connections between the symbols and icons of ancient and modern civilizations. Small metal cutouts and large-scale installation become my primary methods of creating. In my projects I seek to understand the meaning and limits of memory, and the power of building community. The end result is the search for eternal life; The desire to prolong the existence and beauty of humanity far into the future. …

Identification And Validation Of References Genes For Transcriptome Analysis Of Murine Gammaherpesvirus 68 Infection, Sandeep Steven-Andrew Reddy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The human gammaherpesviruses (gammaHV), Kaposi's sarcoma-associated virus (KSHV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), are the etiologic agents of many lymphoproliferative and neoplastic disorders. Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) has a high biological and genetic correlation to EBV and KSHV and represents an amenable, tractable model system to investigate host-virus interactions during chronic gammaHV infections. Modulating host cellular gene expression is one common strategy utilized during infection by all three viruses. Here, we have shown that four previously reported housekeeping genes (HKGs), ActB, beta2M, GAPDH and HPRT, evade host shutoff and exhibit stable transcript expression. The validation of these genes in the context …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Three independent line intercept transect surveys on northern Red Sea reef slopes conducted in 1988/9 and 1997/8 in Egypt and from 2006–9 in Saudi Arabia were used to compare community patterns and coral size. Coral communities showed scale-dependent variability, highest at fine spatial and taxonomic scale (species-specific within and among reef patterns). At coarser scale (generic pattern across regions), patterns were more uniform (regionally consistent generic dominance on differently exposed reef slopes and at different depths). Neither fine- nor coarse-scale patterns aligned along the sampled 1700 km latitudinal gradient. Thus, a latitudinal gradient that had been described earlier from comparable …

We completed a large-scale field experiment in four tributaries of the Logan River, Utah, where the largest metapopulation of imperiled Bonneville cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii utah persists. We documented the spatial and temporal distributions of spawners, quantified substrate use versus substrate availability, and evaluated differences in hatch and emergence fry success between and among sites in relation to habitat characteristics. We observed considerable variability in the timing, magnitude, and duration of spawning among study areas (streams), in part as a function of a variable, multipeaked hydrograph. Nevertheless, across study areas, >70% of redds were constructed on the final descending limb …

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Perchlorate On The Metabolism Of Methanogens, Chris Hearnsberger
The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Perchlorate On The Metabolism Of Methanogens, Chris Hearnsberger
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The search for life on Mars has been one of the more intriguing pursuits of NASA and astrobiologists over the last fifteen years. With the help of NASA’s Martian landers and orbiters, discoveries about the red planet have narrowed the range of possible known organisms that could survive on its surface or beneath its icy crust. The discoveries of water ice, methane, and perchlorate on Mars have excited astrobiologists and prompted experimentation on Earth to help determine whether life could exist on Mars. Methanogens seem an ideal candidate to be the organism responsible for biological production of methane on Mars, …
Cool Roofs At Pomona College, Jeremiah M. Steuterman
Cool Roofs At Pomona College, Jeremiah M. Steuterman
Pomona Senior Theses
The energy efficiency of a building is directly related to the heat transfer between the building and the outside environment. In order to limit the heat transfer to the building by solar radiation cool roofs have been developed which increase the solar reflectivity of roofs. This report investigates the potential application of high reflectivity coatings to roofs at Pomona College and the energy benefits that could result. Cool roofs are used to address two prevalent environmental concerns: high cooling loads and Urban Heat Islands. These two problems are linked and exhibit the potential micro and mesoscale benefits of reducing roof …

Alternative Performances Of Race And Gender In Hip-Hop Music : Nerdcore Counterculture., Jessica Elizabeth Ronald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In his documentary entitled, Nerdcore For Life, director Dan Lamoureux described Nerdcore as a "powerful social collision between hip hop and geek culture". Born on the Internet, Nerdcore Hip-Hop is rap music made by geeks, for geeks and covers such traditionally "nerdy" topics such as comic books, video games, science fiction, anime, technology, etc. Though it has existed online for almost a decade, only recently has Nerdcore gone from being an Internet fad to an underground cultural phenomenon. This paper investigated how hegemonic constructions of race and gender within both the dominant public sphere and hip-hop culture are subverted and …
The Regulation Of Rna Polymerase I-Mediated Transcription In Forebrain Neurons., Scott Carl Smith
The Regulation Of Rna Polymerase I-Mediated Transcription In Forebrain Neurons., Scott Carl Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ribosomal biogenesis failure may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, while its excessive activation has been shown to drive tumor growth. As ribosomal production is initiated and regulated by the Pol1-mediated transcription of rRNA genes in the nucleolus, the latter process had the attention of most researchers interested in the dysregulation of ribosomal biogenesis in disease. When this work began, regulation of Pol1-mediated transcription in neurons had been poorly characterized. The goal of this research has been to better define factors and signaling pathways that regulate neuronal Pol1 activity. The first hypothesis tested was that DNA damage induced by a DNA topoisomerase …

Expression Of Adipocyte/Macrophage Fatty Acid Binding Protein Promotes Tumor Growth And Metastasis., Ashley Simone Triplett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been estimated that 30% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. are associated with obesity. It is well-established that obesity promotes low-grade chronic inflammation, however the mechanisms by which obesity-induced chronic inflammation may promote cancer development and progression are not well-defined. Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs), which are intracellular lipid chaperones, regulate both metabolic and inflammatory pathways. Of the nine FABP family members, adipocyte/macrophage-FABP (A-FABP) has been found to be highly expressed in macrophages in both mice and humans and its expression is increased in response to a high-fat diet. In the present study we examined the influence …

Of Mice And Sigma : Conferred Antibiotic Resistance In The Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Murine Model., Rena Margaret Wallen 1981-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is an enteric pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of hosts. The manner in which this pathogen is able to interact with its host is difficult to define, as is the case with most microbes. Through the use of alternate sigma factors and other regulatory processes, S. Typhimurium is able to invade host cells to establish systemic infections, and survive the assaults of the host immune system. While most strains of S. Typhimurium are typically ampicillin sensitive, within the host, survival inside host cells may provide an escape from many antibiotics. Previous research demonstrated that …

Structure-Activity Relationship Model For Estrogen Receptor Ligands., Huihui Wu 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Xenoestrogens are spread throughout the environment affecting our daily lives and may produce potential toxic effects on human health. The purpose of this study was to develop a mechanistically reliable model capable of identifying xenoestrogens. Our hypothesis was that there are identifiable structural characteristics among a diverse set of estrogen receptor ligands that differentiate estrogenic and nonestrogenic compounds. The model's learning set was developed by collecting compounds from the National Center for Toxicological Research Estrogen Receptor Binding database (NCTRER) . The categorical-SAR (cat-SAR) expert system was used to build the models and perform leave-none-out, leave-one-out, leave-many-out and external validations for …
The Impact Of Adsorbed Cellulase Inactivation On Enzymatic Hydrolysis Kinetics., Zhuoliang Ye
The Impact Of Adsorbed Cellulase Inactivation On Enzymatic Hydrolysis Kinetics., Zhuoliang Ye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Several technical and economic obstacles currently hamper the industrial development of ethanol from biomass. One of the key bottlenecks is the slow kinetics of the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose, and the subsequent rate reduction as the reaction proceeds. As a result, this research focused on understanding underlying causes for the slow kinetics, rate reduction, and low yield during cellulose hydrolysis. Mechanisms traditionally thought to cause these results were investigated, such as change of substrate properties and deactivation of enzyme due to environmental mechanisms, but neither was found to contribute significantly to the slow kinetics and low yield. Inactivation due to …
Click Scaffolds For The Inhibition Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis And Streptococcus Gordonii Biofilm Formation., Catherine Marie Loner
Click Scaffolds For The Inhibition Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis And Streptococcus Gordonii Biofilm Formation., Catherine Marie Loner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Periodontitis and its systemic sequelae remain a major public health problem and developing a cost-efficient therapy will benefit healthcare worldwide. Adherence of Porphyromonas gingivalis to Streptococcus gordonii facilitates colonization of the oral cavity by P. gingivalis and contributes to development of periodontal disease. It has been demonstrated that synthetic peptides (BAR-peptides) inhibit this interaction and the formation of P. gingivalis biofilms. However, peptides are susceptible to proteolytic degradation thereby precluding their use as therapeutic agents. Consequently, rationallydesigned small-molecule peptidomimetics of BAR will potently inhibit P. gingivalis adherence to S. gordonii and represent viable therapeutic compounds. In terms of inhibitor design, …
A Spatial Age-Structured Model Of Perennial Plants With A Seed Bank., Kimberly Ilene Meyer
A Spatial Age-Structured Model Of Perennial Plants With A Seed Bank., Kimberly Ilene Meyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We formulate an integro-difference model to predict the growth and spatial spread of a perennial plant population with an age-structured seed bank. We allow the seeds in the bank to be of any age, producing an infinite system of equations. The production of new seed can be density-dependent and so the function describing this growth is allowed to be non-monotone. The functions describing the seed bank are linear. We develop properties about the non-spatial model, including the existence of a positive steady-state and conditions under which solutions converge to this steady-state. We also show that when the origin is unstable, …

The Role Of Human Awareness On The Spatial Patterns Of The Tick-Borne Disease Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis In Missouri., James Edward Nunn 1985-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), a tick-borne disease that has recently surfaced in the United States, exists in regions where the tick vector population is established. This study utilizes methods that look beyond identifying high-risk regions, and investigates disparate awareness, self-perceived threat, and seriousness of HME to further enhance existing spatial modeling. The Health Belief Model provides a theoretical framework that encompasses the disease ecology aspect of medical geography to understand the relationship between people and their environment by surveying participants in study regions of Missouri. Results are suggestive that awareness differs between high/low incidence regions. Furthermore, education and income were …
