Interleukin-1Β Mediates Metalloproteinase-Dependent Renal Cell Carcinoma Tumor Cell Invasion Through The Activation Of Ccaat Enhancer Binding Protein Β, Brenda L. Petrella, Matthew P. P. Vincenti

Dartmouth Scholarship

Effective treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains a major medical concern, as these tumors are refractory to standard therapies and prognosis is poor. Although molecularly targeted therapies have shown some promise in the treatment of this disease, advanced RCC tumors often develop resistance to these drugs. Dissecting the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression to advanced disease is necessary to design alternative and improved treatment strategies. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) found in aggressive RCC tumors produce a variety of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 b (IL-1b). Moreover, the presence of TAMs and high serum levels of IL-1b in RCC patients correlate …

The Dragons In Your Dreams, Jacquelyn Walther May 2012

The Dragons In Your Dreams, Jacquelyn Walther

Theses and Dissertations

What if every craving that you ever felt stayed with you forever? Suppose facades couldn’t exist, and what should only be the deepest, densest core of a desire was formed into a mass, a body. Its will matching yours in its physical presence. I make creatures that are embodiments of emotions. In this study I mainly focus on desires and inhibitions surrounding romance. I explore anatomical structures and how material make-up can directly reflect emotional character. In this exploration, the materiality of clay allows for a thorough manipulation of the composition of the creatures. In this I am also able …

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman May 2012

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. This …

Transmission Dynamics Of Some Epidemiological Patch Models, Daozhou Gao May 2012

Transmission Dynamics Of Some Epidemiological Patch Models, Daozhou Gao

Open Access Dissertations

As we known, infectious diseases can be transmitted from one region to another due to extensive travel and migration. Meanwhile, different regions have different demographic and epidemiological characteristics. To capture these features, multi-patch epidemic models have been developed to study disease transmission in heterogeneous environments. In Chapter 1, a susceptible-infectious-susceptible patch model with nonconstant transmission coefficients is formulated to investigate the effect of media coverage and human movement on the spread of infectious diseases among patches. In chapter 2, I propose a multi-patch model to study the effects of population dispersal on the spatial spread of malaria between patches. In …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Depressive Symptoms And Treatment Effect Among Patients With Myocardial Infarction From The Enhancing Recovery In Coronary Heart Disease (Enrichd) Trial, Hsin-Hua Lin

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined racial/ethnic group differences in depressive symptoms and treatment effect in a diverse clinical sample of post myocardial infarction (MI) patients. Specific aims were to test group measurement equivalence of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) across non-Hispanic Blacks, non-Hispanic Whites, and Hispanic cardiac patients and to test stability of a BDI measurement model over time from baseline to six-months post-treatment both in the treatment and the usual care groups. The participants included 2370 diverse post-MI patients (467 non-Hispanic Blacks, 1647 non-Hispanic Whites, and 256 Hispanics), a subgroup of the participants who were clinically depressed and/or socially isolated from …

Host-Parasite Interactions In Galapagos Seabirds, Iris Ilena Levin May 2012

Host-Parasite Interactions In Galapagos Seabirds, Iris Ilena Levin

Dissertations

Parasites exhibit a wide range of life history strategies that contribute to different dispersal abilities, host specialization, transmission modes, life-cycle complexity and population structure. Understanding dispersal rates in hosts and parasites is instrumental in defining the scale at which coevolution may be occurring. In order to better understand how and when parasites move between different hosts, I studied a seabird – Hippoboscid fly ectoparasite (and vector) – Haemosporidian parasite system in the Galapagos Islands. I began by describing the Haemosporidian parasites of Galapagos seabirds, discovering a Plasmodium species parasite in Galapagos Penguins (Sphensicus mendiculus), and a new clade of Hippoboscid-vectored …

Biomedical Matching Gui Development, Nazia Sarang May 2012

Biomedical Matching Gui Development, Nazia Sarang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical researchers constantly search for new methods to diagnose the extent of joint injuries in live human subjects. In order to achieve this, the researchers need to know the accurate three dimensional kinematic data of bones and joints and to accurately quantify how bones in a joint move relative to one another during dynamic activities. Algorithms have been developed previously to estimate the exact spatial position and movement of the bones. These methods involved generation of digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR) from a three dimensional CT scan image of human joint with known position and orientation and comparing it with the …

Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Suspended Solids Concentrations In Tributaries To The Great Bay Estuary Watershed In 2011, New Hampshire Department Of Environmental Services, Matthew A. Wood, Philip Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment loads to the Great Bay Estuary are a growing concern. The Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) calculates the nitrogen load from tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary for its State of the Estuaries reports. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to collect representative data on nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment concentrations in tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary in 2011. The study design followed the tributary sampling design which was implemented by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services between 2001 and 2007 and by the University of New Hampshire in 2008 and 2010, so …

Bayesian And Related Methods: Techniques Based On Bayes' Theorem, Mehmet Vurkaç May 2012

Bayesian And Related Methods: Techniques Based On Bayes' Theorem, Mehmet Vurkaç

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Bayes' theorem is a simple algebraic consequence of conditional probability. Yet, its consequences are critical to philosophy, society, and technology. Starting from its simple derivation, we will show how its interpretation in terms of base rates (priors) and class-conditional likelihoods illuminates everyday problems in medicine and law, and provides signal processing, communications, machine learning, model selection, and other applications of statistics with powerful classification and estimation tools. Next, we will briefly examine some of the ways in which this theorem can be adopted to include multiple attributes, contexts, hypotheses, and levels of risk. Methods derived from or related to Bayes’ …

Monitoring Ds Transposition In The Soybean Genome, Manmeet Singh May 2012

Monitoring Ds Transposition In The Soybean Genome, Manmeet Singh

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is a major oilseed commodity which partitions carbon and nitrogen flux during embryogenesis towards two primary storage reserves, protein and oil, at approximately 40% and 20%, respectively in the seed. This attribute makes soybean a valuable feedstock in many food, feed and industrial applications. Over the past decade, a wealth of genomic resources has been established for soybean that will aid in elucidating the underlying biology governing the growth and development of the crop. This in turn will foster innovative breeding and genetics approaches leading to improvements in agronomics and end-use quality. Loss- and …

Dna Methylation Arrays As Surrogate Measures Of Cell Mixture Distribution, Eugene Houseman, William P. Accomando, Devin C. Koestler, Brock C. Christensen, Carmen J. Marsit

Dartmouth Scholarship

There has been a long-standing need in biomedical research for a method that quantifies the normally mixed composition of leukocytes beyond what is possible by simple histological or flow cytometric assessments. The latter is restricted by the labile nature of protein epitopes, requirements for cell processing, and timely cell analysis. In a diverse array of diseases and following numerous immune-toxic exposures, leukocyte composition will critically inform the underlying immuno-biology to most chronic medical conditions. Emerging research demonstrates that DNA methylation is responsible for cellular differentiation, and when measured in whole peripheral blood, serves to distinguish cancer cases from controls.
