The Planar Electrode Linear Ion Trap, Brett Hansen, Hannah Quist, Aaron Hawkins, Daniel Austin
The Planar Electrode Linear Ion Trap, Brett Hansen, Hannah Quist, Aaron Hawkins, Daniel Austin
Utah Space Grant Consortium
We present a linear type ion trap consisting of metal lines that are lithographically patterned onto two ceramic substrates. Trapping fields are realized by applying specific voltage potentials to each line. This arrangement allows miniaturization approaches that are immune to surface roughness issues and increased complexities of precision machining of electrode surfaces. We also present how these traps allow a thorough study of higher order multipoles and their effect on mass analyzer performance.

Acropora Cervicornis Metrics For Quantifying The Size And Total Amount Of Branching Coral, Courtney Kiel
Acropora Cervicornis Metrics For Quantifying The Size And Total Amount Of Branching Coral, Courtney Kiel
Open Access Theses
Acropora cervicornis, listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act, is a branching coral with a complex morphology that does not readily conform to traditional metrics of colony size and percent cover. Commonly used metrics do not reflect the functional scale of this coral’s structure nor unit requirements required by the Endangered Species Act that calls for accurate and defensible metrics to quantify and monitor change in the remaining viable populations. Existing metrics for measuring branching corals are both time-consuming and variable. Therefore, the goal is to streamline and calibrate in situ measurements of A. cervicornis colonies and explore …
From Propietario To Empresario: A Case Study Of Farmer Innovation In Ica, Peru, Elizabeth Faye Weintraub
From Propietario To Empresario: A Case Study Of Farmer Innovation In Ica, Peru, Elizabeth Faye Weintraub
Open Access Theses
Small holder irrigation projects have been cited as a strategy for poverty alleviation throughout the developing world by providing a mechanism to improve efficiency of water delivery, enhance income generation, and promote community organization (both economic and social). However, a paradigm of top-down transfer of technology has dominated the agricultural development discourse and practice, failing to take into account local knowledge systems and individual farmers’ capacity for innovation and experimentation. This in-depth case study of a community of small-scale farmers in a remote region in southern Peru examines a homegrown agricultural innovation in modern drip irrigation technology and the social …
Regulation Of Early Pattern Formation In The Sea Urchin Embryo By The Wnt Pathway Components Dishevelled And Axin, Chieh-Fu Peng
Regulation Of Early Pattern Formation In The Sea Urchin Embryo By The Wnt Pathway Components Dishevelled And Axin, Chieh-Fu Peng
Open Access Dissertations
Data from diverse species within the deuterostomes (mouse, frog, fish, amphioxus, hemichordate, ascidians, sea urchin, sea star) and protostomes (annelids, planarians, nemerteans, mollusks) suggest that Wnt/β-catenin signaling determines posterior identity and thus patterns anterior-posterior body plan formation in most bilaterians. Moreover, nuclear β-catenin marks the gastrulation site in many metazoans including the cnidarians. The activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling at one pole of these embryos is highly influenced by the animal-vegetal (AV) axis of the oocyte. This primary egg axis is specified during oogenesis, however, the maternal mechanisms that establish AV egg polarity and subsequently mediate asymmetric activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling …
Secondary Student Metacognition Compared To Actual Participation In The Classroom, Kristin Buch
Secondary Student Metacognition Compared To Actual Participation In The Classroom, Kristin Buch
Education Senior Action Research Projects
Many times in a conflict there are three different accounts of what happened: person one’s side, person two’s side, and the truth. As often as this saying gets made and joked about, it does reveal truth about how perception and truth don’t always align. With this thought, I want to compare a student’s perceived participation in comparison with actual class participation. In many secondary and collegiate level classrooms, course grades are partially determined on class participation. Because of this, it would seem relevant to consider perceptions with reality so that students can better understand themselves. When a student has a …
Varying Curricula To Meet Physics Students Learning Styles, Gavin Grillo
Varying Curricula To Meet Physics Students Learning Styles, Gavin Grillo
Education Senior Action Research Projects
Through differentiation of physics curriculum, teachers are able to meet various students’ learning styles. Educators are able to differentiate the curriculum so that it builds on students’ strengths and addresses their weaknesses. An inventory can be administered to assess the students’ abilities with certain concepts, and this inventory could be compiled from various assessment questions. Once teachers assess areas of weakness, they are able to make adjustments to curriculum and lesson plans to address these issues. Teaching techniques found in Just-in-time Teaching: Blending Active Learning with Web Technology will be used in the lesson planning and instruction of the course …

Refining Vibrationally-Resonant Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy For Studies Of Interfacial Interactions, Alexander D. Curtis
Refining Vibrationally-Resonant Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy For Studies Of Interfacial Interactions, Alexander D. Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
Many phenomena of interest to science and engineering occur at interfaces; however, access to, or discrimination of, interfacial interactions has been challenging, especially at buried interfaces. Vibrationally resonant sum-frequency generation (VR-SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating the molecular structure of free or buried interfaces, but spectral analysis has relied on many assumptions. To claim accurate new insights, practitioners must be able to make unique determinations from the data without experimental artifacts affecting the final results. For example, two independent and overlapping studies for the polystyrene/air interface were carried out, but reported different surface structures. Initially, this difference was …

Structural Basis For Calmodulin As A Dynamic Calcium Sensor, Miao Zhang, Cameron Abrams, Liping Wang, Anthony Gizzi, Liping He, Ruihe Lin, Yuan Chen, Patrick J. Loll, John M. Pascal, Ji-Fang Zhang
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Calmodulin is a prototypical and versatile Ca2+ sensor with EF-hands as its high-affinity Ca2+ binding domains. Calmodulin is present in all eukaryotic cells, mediating Ca2+-dependent signaling. Upon binding Ca2+, calmodulin changes its conformation to form complexes with a diverse array of target proteins. Despite a wealth of knowledge on calmodulin, little is known on how target proteins regulate calmodulin’s ability to bind Ca2+. Here, we take advantage of two splice variants of SK2 channels, which are activated by Ca2+-bound calmodulin, but show different sensitivity to Ca2+ for their activation. Protein crystal structures and other experiments show that depending on which …
Pre-Whaling Genetic Diversity And Population Ecology In Eastern Pacific Gray Whales: Insights From Ancient Dna And Stable Isotopes, S Elizabeth Alter, Seth D. Newsome, Stephen R. Palumbi
Pre-Whaling Genetic Diversity And Population Ecology In Eastern Pacific Gray Whales: Insights From Ancient Dna And Stable Isotopes, S Elizabeth Alter, Seth D. Newsome, Stephen R. Palumbi
Publications and Research
Commercial whaling decimated many whale populations, including the eastern Pacific gray whale, but little is known about how population dynamics or ecology differed prior to these removals. Of particular interest is the possibility of a large population decline prior to whaling, as such a decline could explain the ,5-fold difference between genetic estimates of prior abundance and estimates based on historical records. We analyzed genetic (mitochondrial control region) and isotopic information from modern and prehistoric gray whales using serial coalescent simulations and Bayesian skyline analyses to test for a pre-whaling decline and to examine prehistoric genetic diversity, population dynamics and …

Optimizing The Air Dissolution Parameters In An Unpacked Dissolved Air Flotation System, Adam Dassey, Chandra Theegala
Optimizing The Air Dissolution Parameters In An Unpacked Dissolved Air Flotation System, Adam Dassey, Chandra Theegala
Faculty Publications
Due to the various parameters that influence air solubility and microbubble production in dissolved air flotation (DAF), a multitude of values that cover a large range for these parameters are suggested for field systems. An unpacked saturator and an air quantification unit were designed to specify the effects of power, pressure, temperature, hydraulic retention time, and air flow on the DAF performance. It was determined that a pressure of 621 kPa, hydraulic retention time of 18.2 min, and air flow of 8.5 L/h would be the best controlled parameters for maximum efficiency in this unit. A temperature of 7 °C …
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Second Generation Anibamine Analogues As Novel Anti-Prostate Cancer Agents, Shilpa Singh
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Second Generation Anibamine Analogues As Novel Anti-Prostate Cancer Agents, Shilpa Singh
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the most prevalent non-cutaneous cancer among men. Since the 19th century when Virchow first introduced the concept of inflammation in cancer, chemokines and their receptors have garnered a lot of interest. Chemokine receptor CCR5 has been especially implicated in many disease states and recently found to be over expressed in prostate cancer cell lines. Anibamine, a natural CCR5 antagonist discovered in 2004, has been found to have significant anti-prostate cancer activity at micromolar level. To optimize this compound and also discover a novel pharmacophore, exploration of the original structure was carried out. Significant modifications were made to …

Life Without Parole: The Influence Of Age And Race On The Sentencing Of Juvenile Offenders, Maria Annabel Mireles
Life Without Parole: The Influence Of Age And Race On The Sentencing Of Juvenile Offenders, Maria Annabel Mireles
Psychology Theses
In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to sentence adolescents charged with non-homicide crimes to life without parole (Graham v. Florida, 2012). Currently, research regarding life without parole is assessed in conjunction with the death penalty, in which life without parole is proposed as a lesser alternative to the death penalty. The current study investigated whether age and race are predictive factors in sentencing juvenile offenders. A sample consisting of 225 undergraduate students were presented with one of six case scenarios adapted from Wilkins v. Missouri (1985) in which the defendant’s age (13, 15, 17) and race …
The Need For Collaboration In Planning Efforts During Natural Disasters: An Evaluation Of The City Of Richmond, Virginia, Jocelyn Leitch
The Need For Collaboration In Planning Efforts During Natural Disasters: An Evaluation Of The City Of Richmond, Virginia, Jocelyn Leitch
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis evaluates whether or not information data sharing is effectively used between federal, state, and local government agencies and non-governmental agencies in a metropolitan area during and immediately after a major natural disaster. Also, whether vulnerable populations were identified and considered during emergency management. The chosen study area is the City of Richmond, VA, and the disaster response is based on flooding episodes that occurred in the city over the last decade following hurricanes and tropical depressions. Questionnaires were administered to representatives of federal, state, and local agencies and NGOs. The questionnaires consisted of a Likert-style series of 10 …
