Demarcating Computer Science, Dana Burkart May 2012

Demarcating Computer Science, Dana Burkart

Theses

Despite its relative youth, computer science has become a well-established discipline, granting over 2% of the bachelors degrees in the United States (U.S. Department of Education, 2010). For this reason, it is important that we understand the nature of computer science and the likely direction for the development of inquiry in computer science in the future. This paper examines several perspectives on the nature of the methods of computer science inquiry. These are empiricist methods, rationalist methods, and an engineering stance. It argues that empiricist and rationalist stances play identifiable roles in the scientific nature of computer science reasoning but …

Relationship Between Observed Parental Optimism And Adolescent Optimism With Parental Involvement As A Mediating Variable: Two Wave Panel Study, Allison Ellsworth May 2012

Relationship Between Observed Parental Optimism And Adolescent Optimism With Parental Involvement As A Mediating Variable: Two Wave Panel Study, Allison Ellsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Using coded data from parent-child interaction tasks and questionnaires, this longitudinal study examined the relationship between observed mother and father optimism and self-reported and observed optimism of their adolescent child one year later with mother and father involvement as mediators. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that while there was not a direct association between maternal optimism and child optimism, that father involvement mediated that relationship, and that father involvement further mediated the relationship between father involvement and child optimism.

The Humble Worm Caenorhabditis Elegans Conditions Under Simulated Microgravity, Sedigheh Heydari

Theses (Pre-2016)

Exemplar organisms seemed very useful in understanding the biological effects of the space environment. They can be employed as a model system to address essential questions in biology. One of the advantages of the model system is that many complex approaches can be applied to address questions of interest. This humble C. elegans roundworm has many benefits for organic studies in space; it is tiny, requiring little space; it is a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite that can exist and reproduce in a designated liquid or agar media. C. elegans in liquid cultures seeded with Escherichia coli OP50 were exposed to simulated microgravity …

Dimethylsulfoxide Exposure Modulates Hl-60 Cell Rolling Interaction, David Gee, Leslie Kate Wright, Jonathan Zimmerman, Kayla Cole, Karen Soule, Michelle Ubowski

Articles

Human leukaemic HL-60 cells are widely used for studying interactions involving adhesion molecules [e.g. P-selectin and PSGL-1 (P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1)] since their rolling behaviour has been shown to mimic the dynamics of leucocyte rolling in vitro. HL-60 cells are neutrophilic promyelocytes that can undergo granulocytic differentiation upon exposure to compounds such as DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide). Using a parallel plate flow chamber functionalized with recombinant P-selectin–Fc chimaera, undifferentiated and DMSO-induced (48, 72 and 96 h) HL-60 cells were assayed for rolling behaviour. We found that depending on P-selectin incubation concentration, undifferentiated cells incurred up to a 6-fold increase in rolling velocity while …

The African Cichlid Fish Astatotilapia Burtoni Uses Acoustic Communication For Reproduction: Sound Production, Hearing, And Behavioral Significance, Karen P. Maruska, Uyhun S. Ung, Russell D. Fernald May 2012

The African Cichlid Fish Astatotilapia Burtoni Uses Acoustic Communication For Reproduction: Sound Production, Hearing, And Behavioral Significance, Karen P. Maruska, Uyhun S. Ung, Russell D. Fernald

Faculty Publications

Sexual reproduction in all animals depends on effective communication between signalers and receivers. Many fish species, especially the African cichlids, are well known for their bright coloration and the importance of visual signaling during courtship and mate choice, but little is known about what role acoustic communication plays during mating and how it contributes to sexual selection in this phenotypically diverse group of vertebrates. Here we examined acoustic communication during reproduction in the social cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. We characterized the sounds and associated behaviors produced by dominant males during courtship, tested for differences in hearing ability associated with female …

Understanding The Structure-Function Relationships In The Mechanosensitive Channel Of Small Conductance (Mscs) And Bacterial Cyclic Nucleotide Gated (Bcng) Ion Channels, Hannah Renee Malcolm May 2012

Understanding The Structure-Function Relationships In The Mechanosensitive Channel Of Small Conductance (Mscs) And Bacterial Cyclic Nucleotide Gated (Bcng) Ion Channels, Hannah Renee Malcolm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In this dissertation, we discuss the relationship between structure and function within the mechanosensitive channel of small conductance: MscS) superfamily. Specifically, we explore the function of the bacterial cyclic nucleotide gated: bCNG) ion channels and the lipid interactions of MscS in the closed and open state. Our main goal was to identify similarities between MscS and bCNG channels and to understand the differences between the two channel families.

The bCNG channel family is a unique subset of the MscS superfamily. These channels are structurally composed of a channel domain homologous to MscS, a non-conserved linker domain, and a cyclic adenosine …

The Food Court In The Magic Kingdom: Globalization, Cuisine And Attitudes In Saudi Arabia, Klaus Heyer May 2012

The Food Court In The Magic Kingdom: Globalization, Cuisine And Attitudes In Saudi Arabia, Klaus Heyer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the last twenty years, Saudi Arabia has been modernizing much faster and in a shorter period than in the majority of the world’s countries. This study seeks to examine factors that influence the diet of Saudi Arabians. Aside from language, one of the principal manifestations of culture is a country’s cuisine.

I sought to determine whether factors, such as exposure to other countries, an income increase, or simply the desire to diversify the palette have led to a change in diet.

This mixed-methods study employed 148 surveys looking at attitudes towards the United States and other countries, travel abroad, …

Synthesis And Development Of Potential Cb1 Receptor Neutral Antagonists, Kimari Slaughter May 2012

Synthesis And Development Of Potential Cb1 Receptor Neutral Antagonists, Kimari Slaughter

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Cannabis and its derivatives have been used for both medicinal and recreational purposes. The study of this plant led to the discovery of over 60 cannabinoids, found exclusively in cannabis, that contribute to the behavioral effects of cannabis use, the most common is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Cannabinoid receptors function to increase activity in the mesolimbic dopamine reward system. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in addition and its regulation plays a crucial role in mental and physical well-being. There is evidence that CB1 receptors are important to the reinforcing effects and the development of physical dependence on opiate …

Active Response Of Polymer Materials From External Stimuli – Solvents And Light; Grafting Reactions On Perovskite Layers, Jianxia Zhang May 2012

Active Response Of Polymer Materials From External Stimuli – Solvents And Light; Grafting Reactions On Perovskite Layers, Jianxia Zhang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The active response of a series of polymeric materials was investigated. Both solvent activated and light activated thin films and wire systems show dynamic behaviors when exposed to different stimuli.

Solvent mediated fluxional behavior of polymer thin films involved extensive, rapid curling both on infusion and evaporation of good solvents. These films can be either lab-fabricated ones or commercial ones, and the curling behavior can be as fast as seconds. Conditions including polymer materials, chosen solvents, and film geometry can affect the behavior.

Methods that allowed for the creation and retention of distorted wire structures were also developed; the asymmetric …
