Semantic Aspects Of Earthcube, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Gary Berg-Cross, Leo Obrst, Amit P. Sheth, Timothy Finin, Isabel F. Cruz

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this document, we give a high-level overview of selected Semantic (Web) technologies, methods, and other important considerations, that are relevant for the success of EarthCube. The goal of this initial document is to provide entry points and references for discussions between the Semantic Technologies experts and the domain experts within EarthCube. The selected topics are intended to ground the EarthCube roadmap in the state of the art in semantics research and ontology engineering.

We anticipate that this document will evolve as EarthCube progresses. Indeed, all EarthCube parties are asked to provide topics of importance that should be treated in …

The Great Salt Lake’S Deep Brine Layer And Its Importance For Mercury Bioaccumulation In Brine Shrimp (Artemia Franciscana), Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Erin F. Jones

Mercury in water bodies is receiving increased attention due to the toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg). Some authors have suggested that stratified lakes with anoxic hypolimnia experience higher rates of mercury methylation. It is believed that this biochemical pathway is promoted by high levels of H2S and organic matter in the deep layers that fuel sulfate‐reducing bacteria that produce methylmercury as a byproduct.

The Dependence Of Cd4 T Cell Development And Activation On The Kinetics Of The Tcr:Pmhc Interaction, Jennifer Nicole Lynch May 2012

The Dependence Of Cd4 T Cell Development And Activation On The Kinetics Of The Tcr:Pmhc Interaction, Jennifer Nicole Lynch

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The T cell is a critical player in the adaptive immune response. T cells function by stimulating antibody production by B cells, secreting cytokines to attract other immune cells, regulating the response of other T cells, and directly killing infected or damaged targets. The role of the adaptive immune response depends on the specific recognition of foreign antigenic epitopes by the T cell.

A T cell's specificity for antigen is conferred by the T cell receptor: TCR). The TCR is designed to bind a peptide antigen presented on an MHC molecule by an antigen presenting cell: APC). The strength of …

In one embodiment, a compound of the invention inhibits kinase activity and/or phosphorylation levels of Akt proteins. The subject invention also concerns methods for inhibiting or killing a cancer cell or other cell in which expression of an Akt protein is elevated or constitutively active, comprising contacting the cell with an effective amount of a compound of formula I. The subject invention also concerns methods for treating cancer or a tumor in a person or animal comprising administering all effective amount of a compound of formula I to …

Optical Instruments Having Dynamic Focus, Jannick Rolland, Supraja Murali, Kevin Thompson May 2012

Optical Instruments Having Dynamic Focus, Jannick Rolland, Supraja Murali, Kevin Thompson

UCF Patents

An optical system suitable for use in an optical instrument such as a handheld optical probe, the optical system including a scanning element and an objective, the objective including a variable focus lens that can be electronically controlled to change the focal length of the optical system. In some embodiments, the optical system can axially and laterally scan a subject material by sequentially focusing at an axial depth using the variable focus lens and laterally scanning the material at that depth using the scanning element.

Dynamically Focused Optical Instrument, Jannick Rolland, Supraja Murali May 2012

Dynamically Focused Optical Instrument, Jannick Rolland, Supraja Murali

UCF Patents

An optical system includes a dynamically focused lens that variably changes focal length to focus light on a material under evaluation at discrete axial depths, and a scanning element that laterally scans the material to focus light on the material at points that are laterally adjacent the axial depth.

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Uptake In Thiomicrospira Crunogena Xcl–2 Is Atp–Sensitive And Enhances Rubisco–Mediated Carbon Fixation, Kristy Jae Menning May 2012

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Uptake In Thiomicrospira Crunogena Xcl–2 Is Atp–Sensitive And Enhances Rubisco–Mediated Carbon Fixation, Kristy Jae Menning

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many autotrophic organisms living in environments with episodically low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations compensate for these fluctuations by employing a carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM). By utilizing a CCM, these organisms can generate intracellular DIC concentrations much higher than extracellular, thereby providing sufficient substrate for carbon fixation. Carbon concentrating mechanisms have been well-studied in cyanobacteria but studies are lacking in other autotrophs. The gammaproteobacterium Thiomicrospira crunogena XCL-2 is a hydrothermal vent chemolithoautotroph that has a CCM, which is functionally similar to that of cyanobacteria. At hydrothermal vents, DIC concentrations and pH values fluctuate over time, with CO2 concentrations ranging from …
