Objective: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a devastating consequence of some generalized convulsive seizures (GCS). Recent work has focused on seizure related apnea as a biomarker of SUDEP risk, frequently without characterizing the adequacy of non-apneic ventilation or identifying other dysfunctional breathing patterns. We hypothesized that GCS frequently induce immediate, severe, non-apneic respiratory dysfunction that can induce critical hypoxia and bradycardia and sought to characterize breathing patterns after GCS.

Methods: Adult patients admitted to an epilepsy monitoring unit were studied. The effects of GCS on breathing and heart rate were analyzed using nasal pressure transducers, chest and abdominal …

Optimized Ultrasound Imaging Of Phase-Change Nanodroplets, Charles R Dyall, Dmitry Nevozhay, Andy Liu, Trevor M Mitcham, George J Lu, Konstantin V Sokolov, Richard R Bouchard

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Phase-change nanodroplets (PCNDs) continue to generate significant research interest due to their potential to extravasate into tissue, to be targeted for molecular imaging and drug delivery, and to undergo an induced phase-change to "activated" microbubbles (MBs) for ultrasound (US) imaging. To accurately quantify molecular markers, however, one assumes a consistent proportion of PCNDs in a region of interest (ROI) are stably activated and imaged. Herein we present a framework for developing a diagnostic sequence that is optimized for PCND activation uniformity, contrast, and acquisition time. To develop this framework, activation was examined at three scales of increasing complexity: single, adjacent, …

Limb salvage using free tissue transfer in patients with rare autoinflammatory syndromes is poorly described, and the safety of microvascular reconstruction in this population remains uncertain. Hereditary pyogenic arthritis, pyoderma gangrenosum, and acne (PAPA) syndrome is characterized by dysregulated inflammation, pathergy, and impaired wound healing, raising concern for flap compromise and postoperative complications. We report a rare case of lower extremity free tissue transfer in a patient with PAPA syndrome. A 66-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and PAPA syndrome presented with rapid wound breakdown, violaceous ulceration, exposed hardware, and periprosthetic joint infection following left total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Examination revealed …

Attachment And Betrayal: Post-Infidelity Attachment Issues With A Focus On Gender, Taylor Forsythe May 2026

Attachment And Betrayal: Post-Infidelity Attachment Issues With A Focus On Gender, Taylor Forsythe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infidelity represents a significant relational trauma that may disturb attachment processes such as trust, emotional intimacy, and closeness. There is a gap in the literature on how different infidelity exposures may relate to these attachment responses; more so, there is a dearth of information on the gender differences for attachment issues following any kind of infidelity. The purpose of this study aimed to examine differences in avoidant and anxious attachment across infidelity groups (no infidelity, non-sexual infidelity, sexual infidelity), and a further comparison of gender differences in those groups. Participants (N = 151) completed online surveys in a larger study …

"Am I A Man Or A Muppet": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Generative Ai’S Representation Of Gender, Jessica Boaz May 2026

"Am I A Man Or A Muppet": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Generative Ai’S Representation Of Gender, Jessica Boaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how generative artificial intelligence constructs and performs gender roles through a rhetorical analysis of the fully AI-generated podcast Fairytale Forensics. Drawing on theories of constitutive rhetoric, stereotyping, and McLuhan’s approach to the medium, this thesis investigates how AI-generated hosts interpret classic fairy tales while simultaneously reproducing and negotiating gender norms through the lens of prosopopoeia, metonymy and synecdoche. These performances rely on normative gender stereotypes that align with broader societal expectations, thereby potentially reinforcing existing cultural assumptions about masculinity and femininity. Ultimately, it demonstrates that AI-generated discourse does not merely reflect human biases but actively participates in …

Why Followership Matters In Psychiatry: Rebalancing Our Obsession With Leadership, Rohit Shankar, Richard Laugharne, Regi Alexander, Kenneth R. Kaufman, Derek K. Tracy, Fabida Aria, Mayura Deshpande, Matthew Frost May 2026

Why Followership Matters In Psychiatry: Rebalancing Our Obsession With Leadership, Rohit Shankar, Richard Laugharne, Regi Alexander, Kenneth R. Kaufman, Derek K. Tracy, Fabida Aria, Mayura Deshpande, Matthew Frost

Peninsula Medical School

SummaryPsychiatry emphasises leadership development, but neglects the equally universal and essential role of followership. Although most clinicians spend more time as followers than leaders, literature overwhelmingly favours leadership. Drawing on healthcare, socio-religious traditions and management science, the authors reframe followership as an active, values-driven role grounded in trust, motivation and moral courage rather than passive compliance. This editorial argues that effective followership is active, ethical and courageous. Nurturing good followers in mental health services is essential for good patient care, organisational integrity and sustainable leadership. Cultivating active followership strengthens safeguarding, transparency and organisational legitimacy. The editorial calls for psychiatry and …

Flicking Fibres: Microfibres Act As Sensory Disruptors In A Marine Crustacean, Ari Drummond, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Lucy M. Turner, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Anthropogenic inputs to the environment—including microplastics and microfibres—are global stressors known to impair multiple facets of organismal biology. However, the effects of these pollutants on sensory structures remain critically understudied. Sensory systems mediate organism-environment interactions, and pollution-derived impairment at these interfaces may cascade through bioprocessing, from information acquisition to behaviour and ultimately fitness. Microfibres, in particular, pose an additional threat, potentially physically obstructing sensory organs and chemically interfering with sensory processes. Using an invertebrate model of sensory biology, Pagurus bernhardus, we tested whether dryer lint—a complex, heterogeneous mix of treated microplastic and cellulose fibres, and other anthropogenic contaminants—acts as a …

Visual Cues Elicit Differential Aggression Towards Female And Female Mimics In The Corkwing Wrasse, Benjamin A. Ellis, Tonje K. Sørdalen, Mark Briffa, Anne Berit Skiftesvik, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Kim A.T. Halvorsen May 2026

Visual Cues Elicit Differential Aggression Towards Female And Female Mimics In The Corkwing Wrasse, Benjamin A. Ellis, Tonje K. Sørdalen, Mark Briffa, Anne Berit Skiftesvik, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Kim A.T. Halvorsen

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) are consistent intrasexual differences in behavior that maximize reproductive success through different means. In corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops), smaller males mimic female visual morphology (hereafter sneakers) to steal fertilizations from nest-building parental males (hereafter nesting males). We investigated whether this visual mimicry effectively deceived 47 nesting males across 4 sites by quantifying 2 agonistic responses (attack latency and attack frequency) to models depicting unfamiliar females, sneakers and rival nesting males. Contrary to expectations, nesting males exhibited faster agonistic responses towards female models, with lower attack latencies compared with both male types. Additionally, the relationship between model …

Ucva Ontology: Standardizing Local Context Factors To Support The Analysis Of Unwarranted Clinical Variation, Apollo Mcowiti, Xubing Hao, Rebecca Z Lin, Laila Rasmy-Bekhet, Cui Tao, Susan Fenton

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objectives: Unwarranted clinical variation (UCV), defined as care provided to a patient that is not proportional to the patient's needs, clinical characteristics, or preferences, results in negative patient outcomes. UCV detection is performed to compare healthcare outcomes across regions or organizations and reduce UCV incidences. However, the lack of standardized UCV concepts and the local context factors hinder the interoperability of UCV analyses between organizations. Currently, UCV analysis relies on centralized analysis, posing challenges due to the proprietary nature of an organization's healthcare and operational data. Standardizing analysis factors enables interoperable analyses by establishing a common context between organizations. This …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Purpose: Radiation therapy (RT) has emerged as an effective local therapy option for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is associated with improved overall survival (OS). However, some patients still have poor outcomes after RT, and biomarkers are needed to stratify prognostic groups. High circulating growth hormone (GH) levels promote HCC proliferation and survival and are associated with aggressive disease. In this study, we evaluated whether pretreatment GH levels are associated with OS and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients who underwent RT for unresectable HCC.

Methods and materials: Patients undergoing RT for HCC during 2017-2023 were identified from a …

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, underscoring the need for improved strategies in diagnosis, treatment, and disease modeling. Traditional in vitro models often fall short in replicating human CV physiology, prompting efforts to advance cardiac tissue engineering and computational modeling. Among these, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a transformative tool, enabling the creation of biomimetic CV constructs that more faithfully replicate native tissue structure and function. However, challenges persist in achieving appropriate mechanical properties and long-term performance of engineered CV constructs. Computational modeling offers powerful solutions to assist with these challenges, providing predictive insights into …

Low Methane Emissions From Nutrient-Rich Former River Channels In A Hydrologically Managed Dryland Delta, Siena Stassi, Jude A. Benavides, Chu-Lin Cheng, Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, Nicholas E. Ray, Nathan O. Barros, Rafael M. Almeida

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic stresses in dryland regions can alter hydrology, salinization, and biogeochemical processes. How these pressures influence methane (CH4) cycling and emissions from aquatic ecosystems remains poorly understood. Over the course of 1 year, we measured diffusive and ebullitive CH4 emissions from resacas—shallow, hydrologically managed distributary channels prevalent throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley along the US–Mexico border. Despite warm, nutrient-rich waters, CH4 emissions from resacas were low, and more comparable to rates observed in estuarine systems. CH4 fluxes were positively related to temperature but negatively related to salinity and rainfall. Elevated salinity, driven by evaporation and source water from the …

Rapid global acceleration in the construction of physical barriers along international borders has greatly influenced biodiversity and animal movement. Physical barriers can fragment landscapes, hinder access to essential resources, impact long-distance migrations, and inhibit dispersal and gene flow. The effects of physical barriers on animal movement and landscape connectivity can be exacerbated in dryland environments where access to water is a limiting factor. In recent decades, the construction of border barrier infrastructure has accelerated along the international boundary between the United States and Mexico. Here, we used a landscape connectivity model to investigate the effects of barriers on wildlife access …

Estrogen As A Therapeutic Agent: Targeting Endotheliopathy And Coagulopathy In Trauma, Niruktha Raghavan, Mira Patel, Bryan A Cotton, Julia Coleman, Donald Jenkins May 2026

Estrogen As A Therapeutic Agent: Targeting Endotheliopathy And Coagulopathy In Trauma, Niruktha Raghavan, Mira Patel, Bryan A Cotton, Julia Coleman, Donald Jenkins

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Traumatic injury remains a leading cause of death, often due to uncontrolled hemorrhage and trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC). TIC is critically triggered by the endotheliopathy of trauma, involving endothelial cell injury and glycocalyx degradation. Despite conventional advances, the stable casualty rate underscores the urgent need for new precision resuscitation strategies that acknowledge factors like biological sex.

Design: The central hypothesis is that estrogen confers a survival advantage in hormonally active females through a dual action: endothelial cell stabilization (halting glycocalyx shedding) and its inherent procoagulant effect. The analysis assesses the therapeutic potential of both exogenous estrogen and female-derived blood products …

Promises, Pitfalls, And Paths Forward For The Pediatric Research Equity Act., Alexa L. Pagano, Danielle J. Green, Jennifer Goldman, Anjali Deshmukh May 2026

Promises, Pitfalls, And Paths Forward For The Pediatric Research Equity Act., Alexa L. Pagano, Danielle J. Green, Jennifer Goldman, Anjali Deshmukh

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

IMPORTANCE: Since its enactment in 2003, the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA) has significantly increased the number of pediatric drug studies performed and expanded pediatric drug labeling. Despite these advancements, many drugs used in children still lack pediatric-specific US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeling, even when pediatric studies are required by law. Recent legislative changes strengthened the FDA's enforcement authority over PREA. As these changes are implemented, persistent gaps in pediatric drug development warrant examination. Addressing these gaps may help ensure that children are systematically included in clinical research and that medications used in children are supported by rigorous …

A Phenomenological Study Of Teachers Who Use Oral Reading To Foster Student Reading Fluency And Engagement, Donyetta Grimes May 2026

A Phenomenological Study Of Teachers Who Use Oral Reading To Foster Student Reading Fluency And Engagement, Donyetta Grimes

Dissertations

The National Reading Panel (2000) recommends oral reading instruction as a means to improve overall reading fluency and reading comprehension. Oral reading fluency is a necessary foundational skill, and students who have not mastered it by the end of third grade, when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn, become struggling adolescent readers (Ming, 2018). Furthermore, there is a lack of research on reading fluency past the primary grades (Makebo et al., 2022). Additionally, research gaps exist when considering teachers’ actual practices during reading instruction (O’Sullivan et al., 2009). This gap is particularly concerning considering that teachers …
