Developmental Programming In Response To Intrauterine Growth Restriction Impairs Myoblast Function And Skeletal Muscle Metabolism, Dustin T. Yates, A.R. Macko, M. Nearing, X. Chen, R.P. Rhoads, Sean W. Limesand

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fetal adaptations to placental insufficiency alter postnatal metabolic homeostasis in skeletal muscle by reducing glucose oxidation rates, impairing insulin action, and lowering the proportion of oxidative fibers. In animal models of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), skeletalmuscle fibers have lessmyonuclei at birth. This means thatmyoblasts, the sole source formyonuclei accumulation in fibers, are compromised. Fetal hypoglycemia and hypoxemia are complications that result from placental insufficiency. Hypoxemia elevates circulating catecholamines, and chronic hypercatecholaminemia has been shown to reduce fetal muscle development and growth. We have found evidence for adaptations in adrenergic receptor expression profiles in myoblasts and skeletal muscle of IUGR sheep …

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher May 2012

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

The phenomenon of altruism extends from the biological realm to the human sociocultural realm. This paper sketches a coherent outline of multiple types of altruism of progressively increasing scope that span these two realms and are grounded in an ever-expanding sense of “self.” Discussion of this framework notes difficulties associated with altruisms at different levels. It links scientific ideas about the evolution of cooperation and about hierarchical order to perennial philosophical and religious concerns. It offers a conceptual background for inquiry into societal challenges that call for altruistic behavior, especially the challenge of environmental and social sustainability.

New Insights Into Troglotella Incrustans Wernli & Fookes, 1992, A Fascinating Upper Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous Foraminifer, Felix Schlagintweit

Studia UBB Geologia

New data about the highly variable test morphology of the benthic foraminifer Troglotella incrustans WERNLI & FOOKES (Oxfordian-Lower Cenomanian) are presented, permitting an emended species/genus diagnosis. This concerns mainly the existence of a large final chamber with fistulose extensions that may follow the uniserial or the irregular-branching test part. The way of life of T. incrustans (cryptoendolithic vs. euendolithic) is discussed against the background of different existing models in the literature. The study is based on material (thin-sections and provided photographs) mainly from the Upper Jurassic of Austria, Italy, Romania, Ukraine, and also the type-locality of France.

Flexure-Fet Biosensor To Break The Fundamental Sensitivity Limits Of Nanobiosensors Using Nonlinear Electromechanical Coupling, Ankit Jain, Pradeep Nair, Muhammad A. Alam May 2012

Flexure-Fet Biosensor To Break The Fundamental Sensitivity Limits Of Nanobiosensors Using Nonlinear Electromechanical Coupling, Ankit Jain, Pradeep Nair, Muhammad A. Alam

Birck and NCN Publications

In this article, we propose a Flexure-FET (flexure sensitive field effect transistor) ultrasensitive biosensor that utilizes the nonlinear electromechanical coupling to overcome the fundamental sensitivity limits of classical electrical or mechanical nanoscale biosensors. The stiffness of the suspended gate of Flexure-FET changes with the capture of the target biomolecules, and the corresponding change in the gate shape or deflection is reflected in the drain current of FET. The Flexure-FET is configured to operate such that the gate is biased near pull-in instability, and the FET-channel is biased in the subthreshold regime. In this coupled nonlinear operating mode, the sensitivity of …

Loss Of Mhc And Neutral Variation In Peary Caribou: Genetic Drift Is Not Mitigated By Balancing Selection Or Exacerbated By Mhc Allele Distributions, Sabrina S. Taylor, Deborah A. Jenkins, Peter Arcese May 2012

Loss Of Mhc And Neutral Variation In Peary Caribou: Genetic Drift Is Not Mitigated By Balancing Selection Or Exacerbated By Mhc Allele Distributions, Sabrina S. Taylor, Deborah A. Jenkins, Peter Arcese

Faculty Publications

Theory and empirical results suggest that the rate of loss of variation at Mhc and neutral microsatellite loci may differ because selection influences Mhc genes, and because a high proportion of rare alleles at Mhc loci may result in high rates of loss via drift. Most published studies compare Mhc and microsatellite variation in various contemporary populations to infer the effects of population size on genetic variation, even though different populations are likely to have different demographic histories that may also affect contemporary genetic variation. We directly compared loss of variation at Mhc and microsatellite loci in Peary caribou by …

Open Access Scientific Publishing And The Developing World, Jorge Contreras May 2012

Open Access Scientific Publishing And The Developing World, Jorge Contreras

Working Papers

Responding to rapid and steep increases in the cost of scientific journals, a growing number of scholars and librarians have advocated “open access” (OA) to the scientific literature. OA publishing models are having a significant impact on the dissemination of scientific information. Despite the success of these initiatives, their impact on researchers in the developing world is uncertain. This article analyses major OA approaches adopted in the industrialized world (so-called Green OA, Gold OA, and OA mandates, as well as non-OA information philanthropy) as they relate to the consumption and production of research in the developing world. The article concludes …

A Specialized Citric Acid Cycle Requiring Succinyl-Coenzyme A (Coa):Acetate Coa-Transferase (Aarc) Confers Acetic Acid Resistance On The Acidophile Acetobacter Aceti, Elwood Mullins May 2012

A Specialized Citric Acid Cycle Requiring Succinyl-Coenzyme A (Coa):Acetate Coa-Transferase (Aarc) Confers Acetic Acid Resistance On The Acidophile Acetobacter Aceti, Elwood Mullins

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The characteristic ability of acetic acid bacteria to aerobically oxidize ethanol to acetic acid has been harnessed for millennia to produce vinegar. Acetic acid permeates cell membranes at low pH and generally inhibits bacterial growth at low millimolar concentrations. The strains used for vinegar production, however, thrive in near-molar concentrations. This remarkable resistance results from the combined contributions of several molecular mechanisms. This study examines the inherent acid stability of proteins from the industrial vinegar-production strain Acetobacter aceti 1023 and the process by which cytoplasmic acetic acid is "overoxidized" to carbon dioxide. Acetate overoxidation in A. aceti strain 1023 is …

Expression And Function Of Small Rnas In Normal And Psoriatic Skin, Cailin Joyce May 2012

Expression And Function Of Small Rnas In Normal And Psoriatic Skin, Cailin Joyce

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by hyperproliferation and altered differentiation of keratinocytes, and infiltration of activated immune cells in the epidermis. Array based genome-wide expression studies by our lab and others have revealed over 1,300 alterations in mRNA transcript levels in psoriatic skin. microRNAs: miRNAs) are a class of short, regulatory RNAs that play critical roles in human development and disease. I hypothesized that differential expression of miRNAs might underlie some of the gene expression changes in psoriatic skin. Thus, I sought to characterize the global landscape of miRNA expression in human skin, and to investigate the …

Contributions Of Qualitative Research To Understanding Saving Theory For Children And Youth, Margaret Sherraden, Clark Peters, Kristen Wagner, Margaret Clancy, Baorong Guo May 2012

Contributions Of Qualitative Research To Understanding Saving Theory For Children And Youth, Margaret Sherraden, Clark Peters, Kristen Wagner, Margaret Clancy, Baorong Guo

Center for Social Development Research

This paper explores contributions of qualitative research to saving theory for children, youth, and parents in Children’s Development Account (CDA) programs. It brings together findings from three studies: (1) elementary school age children saving for college, (2) youth transitioning from foster care saving for education and other purposes, and (3) mothers of toddlers saving for college. Findings suggest that children, youth, and parents find CDAs helpful in accumulating savings. CDAs interact with developmental stages to motivate and facilitate saving. Accumulating savings has positive meaning for participants in CDAs for economic and psychological reasons. However, although CDAs overcome some obstacles in …

Characterization Of Complement C3 Dysregulation Predisposing To Two Human Disease States, Elizabeth Miller May 2012

Characterization Of Complement C3 Dysregulation Predisposing To Two Human Disease States, Elizabeth Miller

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The complement system is an essential branch of the innate immune system and acts as a bridge to the adaptive immune system. It serves as the first line of defense against pathogens, as well as in the clearance of immune complexes and apoptotic cells. Deficiencies in many of the complement components lead to an increase in bacterial infections while others predispose to autoimmune conditions, especially systemic lupus erythematosus: SLE). Regulation of the complement system is important for protection of the host tissues against inappropriate activation. In the absence of appropriate regulation, commonly due to mutations in regulatory proteins, complement can …

Comparative And Functional Genomic Analysis Of The Methanobrevibacter Smithii Pan Genome, Elizabeth Hansen May 2012

Comparative And Functional Genomic Analysis Of The Methanobrevibacter Smithii Pan Genome, Elizabeth Hansen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The human gastrointestinal tract hosts trillions of microorganisms that impact human health. Although members of the domain Bacteria dominate our gut bioreactors, members of Archaea and Eukarya, and their viruses, are also represented. Methanobrevibacter smithii is the dominant Archaeon found in human gut, although only a subset of humans harbor this methanogen. Together with other hydrogen-consuming organisms: acetogens, sulfate reducing bacteria), M. smithii plays an important role in determining the efficiency of fermentation of dietary polysaccharides. Thus, deciphering the interactions between methanogens, acetogens and SRB and other members of the gut microbiota offers an important opportunity to gain new insights …
