The Effects Of A Riverline Flood On The Ecology And Habitat Of The Swainson's Warbler And A Test Of The Swainson's Warbler's Habitat Sustainability Index, Bryan Michael Reiley May 2012

The Effects Of A Riverline Flood On The Ecology And Habitat Of The Swainson's Warbler And A Test Of The Swainson's Warbler's Habitat Sustainability Index, Bryan Michael Reiley

Student Theses and Dissertations

We attempted to validate the recently published Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model for the Swainson's Warbler using data collected between 2005 and 2010 at Big Island (BI), White River National Wildlife Refuge (WRNWR), and Saint Francis National Forest (SFNF). The Swainson's Warbler HSI was tested in two ways; by comparing unoccupied and occupied location HSI scores and by comparing forest stand HSI scores to abundance estimates of Swainson's Warblers in each stand. We found HSI scores were significantly lower (P = 0.006) for sites occupied by Swainson's Warblers (mean = 0.66) than those that were unoccupied (mean = 0.77) at …

Arabidopsis thaliana seeds without functional SEED MATURATION PROTEIN1 (SMP1), a boiling soluble protein predicted to be of intrinsic disorder, presumed to be a LATE EMBRYOGENESIS ABUNDANT (LEA) family protein based on sequence homology, do not enter secondary dormancy after 3 days at 40 °C. We hypothesized that SMP1 may protect a heat labile protein involved in the promotion of secondary dormancy. Recombinant SMP1 and GmPM28, its soybean (Glycine max), LEA4 homologue, protected the labile GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHYROGENASE enzyme from heat stress, as did a known protectant, Bovine Serum Albumin, whether the LEA protein was in solution or attached to the bottom …

Portable Microfluidic Chip For Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Produce And Blood, Umut A. Gurkan May 2012

Portable Microfluidic Chip For Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Produce And Blood, Umut A. Gurkan

Faculty Scholarship

Pathogenic agents can lead to severe clinical outcomes such as food poisoning, infection of open wounds, particularly in burn injuries and sepsis. Rapid detection of these pathogens can monitor these infections in a timely manner improving clinical outcomes. Conventional bacterial detection methods, such as agar plate culture or polymerase chain reaction, are time-consuming and dependent on complex and expensive instruments, which are not suitable for point-of-care (POC) settings. Therefore, there is an unmet need to develop a simple, rapid method for detection of pathogens such as Escherichia coli. Here, we present an immunobased microchip technology that can rapidly detect and …

The Supreme Court On The Social Security Rights Of Posthumously Conceived Children: State Law Controls Family Status, Joanna L. Grossman May 2012

The Supreme Court On The Social Security Rights Of Posthumously Conceived Children: State Law Controls Family Status, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Are children legally related to their biological father when they were conceived after his death? This is a question that has been considered by many federal courts and, now, by the U.S. Supreme Court, in Astrue v. Capato. The Court’s answer? It depends, largely on state inheritance law. This ruling resolves a federal circuit split on the proper interpretation of the Social Security Act, and restores the focus on state law that is typical of federal laws that turn on family status.

Visualizing Evolution In Real-Time Method For Strain Engineering, Luis Reyes, James Winkler, Katy Kao May 2012

Visualizing Evolution In Real-Time Method For Strain Engineering, Luis Reyes, James Winkler, Katy Kao

Faculty Publications

The adaptive landscape for an industrially relevant phenotype is determined by the effects of the genetic determinants on the fitness of the microbial system. Identifying the underlying adaptive landscape for a particular phenotype of interest will greatly enhance our abilities to engineer more robust microbial strains. Visualizing evolution in real-time (VERT) is a recently developed method based on in vitro adaptive evolution that facilitates the identification of fitter mutants throughout the course of evolution. Combined with high-throughput genomic tools, VERT can greatly enhance the mapping of adaptive landscapes of industrially relevant phenotypes in microbial systems, thereby expanding our knowledge on …

Design And Pilot Biomechanical Evaluation Of A New Device For The Surgical Treatment Of Atlanto-Axial Instability, Darren Lee Davis May 2012

Design And Pilot Biomechanical Evaluation Of A New Device For The Surgical Treatment Of Atlanto-Axial Instability, Darren Lee Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this paper was a biomechanical review of a new device, BTS (Bilateral Transarticular Spacer), to stabilize atlanto-axial motion. The biomechanical performance of the BTS and Harms techniques were compared using 6 cadaveric spines. The BTS was also designed to lessen the risks of damaging life sustaining nerves and arteries during placement at the atlanto-axial joint. Two hypotheses were postulated: 1.) The BTS will be able to stabilize the atlanto-axial joint after a type 2 odontoid fracture; and 2.) BTS will function biomechanically similar to the traditional Harms stabilization technique. In conclusion, the testing performed provided initial feasibility …

An Exploration Of The Link Between Masculinity And Intimate Partner Violence, Alida Gage May 2012

An Exploration Of The Link Between Masculinity And Intimate Partner Violence, Alida Gage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Current research has established links between endorsement of traditional male role norms and perpetration of intimate partner violence. However, research has not identified the cognitive and affective pathways that link masculinity ideology and beliefs about intimate partner violence. The current study examined fear of intimacy, ambivalent sexism, and relationship dominance as potential mediating factors of the relationship between masculinity ideology and acceptance of myths about partner violence in a community sample of 101 American men. Multiple regression analyses indicated that, while sexism and dominance did partially mediate the proposed relationship, fear of intimacy did not. Research and clinical implications are …

A Portrait Of The Insider Trader As A Woman, Joan Macleod Heminway May 2012

A Portrait Of The Insider Trader As A Woman, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

This revised draft book chapter describes the interrelationship between gender and U.S insider trading law and explores (anecdotally and through extensions of existing gender studies outside the insider trading realm) the potential roles and significance of gender in that context. Although women have become more visible as participants in the securities markets and as alleged and actual transgressors of insider trading rules, the role of women in insider trading is still ill understood, except anecdotally. In sum, the portrait of the insider trader as a woman is a work in process.

Lipid Peroxides And Glutathione Status In Human Progenitor Mononuclear (U937) Cells Following Exposure To Low Doses Of Nickel And Copper, William Y. Boadi, Shalandus Harris, Justin B. Anderson, Samuel E. Adunyah May 2012

Lipid Peroxides And Glutathione Status In Human Progenitor Mononuclear (U937) Cells Following Exposure To Low Doses Of Nickel And Copper, William Y. Boadi, Shalandus Harris, Justin B. Anderson, Samuel E. Adunyah

Chemistry Faculty Research

Effects of Cu2+, Ni2+ or Cu2+ + Ni2+ on lipid peroxide and glutathione (GSH) levels in U937 cells were investigated. Cells were treated with 0, 5, 10, and 20 µM of Cu2+ and/or Ni2+ and H2O2 (0.01 mM) and incubated for 24 hours at 37°C. Lipid peroxides were measured by the thiobarbituric acid assay (TBA). GSH intracellular levels were assayed by the GSH assay kit from EMD/Calbiochem (San Diego, California, USA). Cu2+ or Ni2+ significantly (P < 0.01) increased lipid peroxides in a dose-dependent manner, compared to controls. The effect was more pronounced for Cu2+, compared to the Ni2+-treated samples. Cu2+ + Ni2+ increased lipid peroxides in a significant (P < 0.001), dose-dependent manner, compared to Cu2+ or Ni2+ alone (i.e., ratio of 2.5:1-fold for combined versus single treatments, respectively). Cu2+ or Ni2+ significantly decreased GSH levels in U937 cells, with the effect being pronounced for Cu2+. Cu2+ + Ni2+ metal ions significantly (P < 0.001) depleted cells of GSH in a dose-dependent manner. Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) at 50 or 100 µM moderately reduced the Cu2+- or Ni2+-induced effects on GSH levels. Interestingly, GSH levels generally decreased to half (except for the combined metal dose of 20 µM at 100 µM EDTA) of its level at the highest metal concentration tested for both the single or combined treatments. In conclusion, multiple exposures of cells to metal ions may be lethal to cells, compared to their single treatments.

King Of Masks: The Myth Of Miao-Shan And The Empowerment Of Women, Kevin Dodd May 2012

King Of Masks: The Myth Of Miao-Shan And The Empowerment Of Women, Kevin Dodd

Journal of Religion & Film

King of Masks represents a particular type of mythic film that includes within it references to an ancient sacred story and is itself a contemporary recapitulation of it. The movie also belongs to a further subcategory of mythic cinema, using the double citation of the myth—in its original integrity and its re-enactment—to critique the subordinate position of women to men in the narrated world. To do this, the Buddhist myth of Miao-shan, which centralizes the Confucian value of filiality, is re-applied beyond its traditional scope and context. Thereby two prominent features of contemporary China are creatively addressed: the revival of …

There’S No Place Like Home: From Oz To Antichrist, J. Sage Elwell May 2012

There’S No Place Like Home: From Oz To Antichrist, J. Sage Elwell

Journal of Religion & Film

This article explores the dialectic of the uncanny in The Wizard of Oz (Victor Flemming, 1939) and Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 2009), treating the latter as a sequel to the former such that we encounter Dorothy first as a young girl and then as a grown woman. I observe that the uncanny entails a repressive and expressive moment that is cinematically rendered in these two films, and drawing on Freud and Žižek, I argue that in Dorothy’s evolution from Oz to Antichrist we see that the witches and wizards and gods and devils of our own minds are known to …

Menstruation As Heroine’S Journey In Pan’S Labyrinth, Richard Lindsay May 2012

Menstruation As Heroine’S Journey In Pan’S Labyrinth, Richard Lindsay

Journal of Religion & Film

I propose that the Guillermo del Toro film, Pan's Labyrinth (2006) follows the narrative outline of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey as experienced through the biological process of onset of menstruation in its young protagonist. I suggest a reading of the film that takes into account the visual and mythological symbolism of the figure of Pan, as well as the cultural context of menstruation in mythology and religion. I offer interviews from the director that support this interpretation, but ultimately I value a folk interpretation, or a "viewer's hunch" that the strange and fertile symbolism of the film represents a coming-of-age …

Bt toxins derived from the arthropod bacterial pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis are widely used for insect control as insecticides or in transgenic crops. Bt resistance has been found in field populations of several lepidopteran pests and in laboratory strains selected with Bt toxin. Widespread planting of crops expressing Bt toxins has raised concerns about the potential increase of resistance mutations in targeted insects. By using Bombyx mori as a model, we identified a candidate gene for a recessive form of resistance to Cry1Ab toxin on chromosome 15 by positional cloning. BGIBMGA007792-93, which encodes an ATP-binding cassette transporter similar to human multidrug …

Cdc42-Dependent Activation Of Nadph Oxidase Is Involved In Ethanol-Induced Neuronal Oxidative Stress, Xin Wang, Zunji Ke, Gang Chen, Mei Xu, Kimberly A. Bower, Jacqueline A. Frank, Zhuo Zhang, Xianglin Shi, Jia Luo

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

It has been suggested that excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress play an important role in ethanol-induced damage to both the developing and mature central nervous system (CNS). The mechanisms underlying ethanol-induced neuronal ROS, however, remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of NADPH oxidase (NOX) in ethanol-induced ROS generation. We demonstrated that ethanol activated NOX and inhibition of NOX reduced ethanol-promoted ROS generation. Ethanol significantly increased the expression of p47phox and p67phox, the essential subunits for NOX activation in cultured neuronal cells and the cerebral cortex of infant mice. Ethanol caused serine …
