An Evolutionary Search Paradigm That Learns With Past Experiences, Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, Ivor Tsang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A major drawback of evolutionary optimization approaches in the literature is the apparent lack of automated knowledge transfers and reuse across problems. Particularly, evolutionary optimization methods generally start a search from scratch or ground zero state, independent of how similar the given new problem of interest is to those optimized previously. In this paper, we present a study on the transfer of knowledge in the form of useful structured knowledge or latent patterns that are captured from previous experiences of problem-solving to enhance future evolutionary search. The essential contributions of our present study include the meme learning and meme selection …

Legacy effects of past land use and disturbance are increasingly recognized, yet consistent definitions of and criteria for defining them do not exist. To address this gap in biological- and ecosystem-assessment frameworks, we propose a general metric for evaluating potential legacy effects, which are computed by normalizing altered system function persistence with duration of disturbance. We also propose two distinct legacy-effect categories: signal effects from lags in transport and structural effects from physical landscape changes. Using flux records for water, sediment, nitrogen, and carbon from long-term study sites in the eastern United States from 1500 to 2000, we identify gaps …

The Zn, Co, and Mn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of the N-acetyl-l-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE) from Escherichia coli, loaded with one or two equivalents of divalent metal ions (i.e., [Zn(II)_(ArgE)], [Zn(II)Zn(II)(ArgE)], [Co(II)_(ArgE)], [Co(II)Co(II)(ArgE)], [Mn(II)_(ArgE)], and [Mn(II)Mn(II)(ArgE)]), were recorded. The Fourier transformed data (FT) for [Zn(II)_(ArgE)], [Zn(II)Zn(II)(ArgE)], [Co(II)_(ArgE)] and [Co(II)Co(II)(ArgE)] are dominated by a peak at 2.05 Å, that can be fit assuming five or six light atom (N,O) scatterers. Inclusion of multiple-scattering contributions from the outer-shell atoms of a histidine-imidazole ring resulted in reasonable Debye–Waller factors for these contributions and a slight reduction …

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable B lymphocyte cancer. To date, a comparative analysis of global protein metabolism for the MM cell line CCL-155 (RPMI-8226) and the non-cancerous B lymphocyte cell line CCL-156 (RPMI-1788) has not been published. Here, we report that both global protein synthesis and degradation occur at a higher rate in MM cells and demonstrate that alkylating agents can reduce global protein degradation in both cell lines, but the effect is greater in CCL-156 cells. Treatment with melphalan plus the proteasome inhibitor MG132 reduced global protein degradation for MM cells to roughly 60% of that seen without …

Organic Options For Striped Cucumber Beetle Management In Cucumbers, Katie Brandt Jun 2012

Organic Options For Striped Cucumber Beetle Management In Cucumbers, Katie Brandt

Masters Theses

Striped cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittata F.) are a serious pest of cucurbits, particularly on organic farms. These pests are the vector and overwintering host for bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), which kills plants and can render cucumbers, melons and other produce unmarketable. During field research in 2009, row covers, compost tea and reflective mulch were compared on a commercial organic farm in Ottawa County, Michigan. I collected data on plant growth, incidence of bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), marketable and unmarketable yields and profits. I found that row covers led to significant increases in plant growth, significant increases in marketable yield during …

Hybridization Facilitates The Rapid Evolution Of Reduced Herbicide Sensitivity In The Widely-Managed Invasive Aquatic Plant, Eurasian Watermilfoil, Elizabeth Ann Larue Jun 2012

Hybridization Facilitates The Rapid Evolution Of Reduced Herbicide Sensitivity In The Widely-Managed Invasive Aquatic Plant, Eurasian Watermilfoil, Elizabeth Ann Larue

Masters Theses

Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is one of North American’s most invasive and widely managed aquatic weeds. Eurasian watermilfoil also hybridizes with the native northern watermilfoil (Myriophyllum sibiricum) to produce many invasive and genetically diverse populations of hybrid watermilfoils. Both Eurasian and hybrid watermilfoils are commonly controlled with herbicides, but there has been recent concern that some hybrids exhibit reduced herbicide sensitivity. There is a lack of studies comparing the response of Eurasian and hybrid watermilfoils to commonly used herbicides. To determine if hybrids exhibit reduced herbicide sensitivity, I compared the sensitivity of hybrid and Eurasian watermilfoil …

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sports participation on cortical bone in the tibia. Methods: 53 female collegiate athletes (25 cross-country, 16 soccer, and 12 volleyball) and 20 inactive controls had the left distal 20% tibia scanned by pQCT. Cortical volumetric BMD (vBMD) was measured within the cortical shell at the anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral regions and standard deviations were calculated. Results: Total vBMD was greater in the control group (1161±5 mg/mm3) than each of the sports (p<0.05). Soccer players (1147±5 mg/mm3) had greater vBMD than volleyball players (1136±7 mg/mm3) (p<0.05), but similar to cross-country runners (1145±5 mg/mm3). Cortical thickness was greatest in soccer players (4.1±0.1 mm), while cross-country and control subjects (3.8±0.1 mm) had greater thickness than volleyball players (3.4±0.1 mm)(p<0.05). Periosteal circumference was greater in volleyball players (71±1.4 mm) than soccer, cross-country, and control subjects (68±0.9, 69±0.8, and 66±1 mm, respectively; all, p<0.05). vBMD variation within the cortical shell was greater among control subjects (70±6 mg/cm3) than each of the athlete groups, with soccer players having lower variation than cross country runners (within-in person SD 36±6 mg/cm3 and 54±5 mg/cm3 respectively; p<0.05). Conclusion: These results indicate bone geometry and distribution within the cortical shell of the tibia …

Native grasslands have been altered to a greater extent than any other biome in North America. The habitats and resources needed to support breeding performance of grassland birds endemic to prairie ecosystems are currently threatened by land management practices and impending climate change. Climate models for the Great Plains prairie region predict a future of hotter and drier summers with strong multiyear droughts and more frequent and severe precipitation events. We examined how fluctuations in weather conditions in eastern Colorado influenced nest survival of an avian species that has experienced recent population declines, the Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus). Nest survival …

Multi-scale resource selection modeling is used to identify factors that limit species distributions across scales of space and time. This multi-scale nature of habitat suitability complicates the translation of inferences to single, spatial depictions of habitat required for conservation of species. We estimated resource selection functions (RSFs) across three scales for a threatened ungulate, woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), with two objectives: (1) to infer the relative effects of two forms of anthropogenic disturbance (forestry and linear features) on woodland caribou distributions at multiple scales and (2) to estimate scale-integrated resource selection functions (SRSFs) that synthesize results across scales for …

Chlorophyll-Based Approach For Remote Estimation Of Crop Gross Primary Production: From In Situ Measurements To Satellite Imagery, Yi Peng Jun 2012

Chlorophyll-Based Approach For Remote Estimation Of Crop Gross Primary Production: From In Situ Measurements To Satellite Imagery, Yi Peng

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The synoptic and accurate quantification of crop gross primary production (GPP) is essential for studying carbon budgets in croplands and monitoring crop status. The objective of this dissertation is to develop a quantitative technique to estimate crop GPP using remotely sensed data collected from close range to satellite altitudes. In this study, a model based on a recently developed paradigm, which relates crop GPP to a product of total crop chlorophyll content and incident radiation affecting vegetation photosynthesis, was justified for the remote estimation of GPP in crops. The model was tested with ground-observed incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PARin …

Dimensions Of Individuals' Judgements About Sexual Attraction, Romantic Attachment, And Sexual Orientation, Luis F. Morales Knight Jun 2012

Dimensions Of Individuals' Judgements About Sexual Attraction, Romantic Attachment, And Sexual Orientation, Luis F. Morales Knight

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Despite 150 years of scientific interest in sexual orientation, contemporary investigators grapple with a number of serious difficulties. A precise, unified definition of sexual orientation appropriate for scientific use continues to elude researchers, most likely because there is still no single coherent theory of sexual orientation. This lack impedes research into the measurement of sexual orientation. Existing measurements of sexual orientation rely on partial or incompletely empirical research. The present study identified promising avenues for development of credible definitions, theories, and measurements of sexual orientation: (a) mate-selection tasks; (b) the idea that bisexually-identified individuals place a lower priority on partner …

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This issue is motivated by the quest for social justice, and seeks to present feminist inquiry from a wide range of perspectives on social, cultural, economic, political, and legal phenomena important to the study of wartime sexual violence. As editor, I recognize that these authors share a common commitment to justice when it comes to ending conflict-related sexual violence. Each writer, in her own way, examines how women in more developed countries must learn from the experiences of women in countries located primarily in the developing and less-developed world. The writers explore not only the institution of patriarchy that dictates …

Spread Spectrum Jamming, Edward Hwang, Karl Sanders Jun 2012

Spread Spectrum Jamming, Edward Hwang, Karl Sanders

Electrical Engineering

Direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) is a modulation technique that has been used in many telecommunication devices. Unlike the case of a single frequency carrier, the modulated signal in DSSS occupies a much wider bandwidth in order to reduce the possible interferences with narrow band communication signals. Considering the fact that spread spectrum is generally used to resist jamming, there are very few documented techniques or methods on jamming spread spectrum signals

In this project, we attempt to jam a remote control (RC) car (manufactured by Traxxas) that employs DSSS. The multichannel transmitter of a Sony camera is used as a …

Li (Ritual/Rite) And Tian (Heaven/Nature) In The Xunzi: Does Confucian Li Need Metaphysics?, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Ritual (li) is central to Confucian ethics and political philosophy. Robert Neville believes that Chinese Philosophy has an important role to play in our times by bringing ritual theory to the analysis of global moral and political issues. In a recent work, Neville maintains that ritual ‘needs a contemporary metaphysical expression if its importance is to be seen.’ This paper examines Neville's claim through a detailed study of the ‘ethics of ritual’ in one of the early Confucian texts, the Xunzi. This text has sometimes been read as offering a form of naturalism in its discussions of ‘heaven (tian)’ as …

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein Jun 2012

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein

Chicago Journal of International Law

One key similarity between natural law and international law is that they seek to obtain a stable social order without the intervention of any state authority capable of issuing and enforcing its commands to those subject to its rule. Among ordinary individuals in a state of nature that weakness tends to lead to a stripped-down libertarian regime that features simple rules of acquisition, contract, and protection. The system gains its relative stability from the brute fact that between rough equals the part in the defensive posture will win out, so that great disparities in power are needed to disrupt the …

The Effect Of Mechanical Force On Gene Expression Of Human Bladder Smooth Muscle Cells, Christopher A. Callan Jun 2012

The Effect Of Mechanical Force On Gene Expression Of Human Bladder Smooth Muscle Cells, Christopher A. Callan

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

The purpose of this project is to define, at the molecular level, the process by which gene expression of the extracellular matrix is regulated by mechanical forces in the Human Bladder Smooth Muscle cells (BSMCs). The goal is to first localize several functionally distinct transmembrane proteins; Sarcoglycans (α, β, γ, δ and ε), cytoskeletal proteins Vimentin, and Desmin to verify their presence in the cultured BSMCs using fluorescent-labeled antibodies specific for each protein. The sarcoglycans are primarily responsible for transferring intracellular force generated by the interaction of actin and myosin while the extracellular proteins are responsible for linking the cells …

Therefore, generic Simvastatin Tablets, USP 80 mg, have been tested and approved by the FDA as equivalents to, and substitutable with, the branded …

Design, Modeling And Fabrication Of Shear Mode Bulk Acoustic Wave Sensor As A Potential Biosensor, Chi-Jung Cheng Jun 2012

Design, Modeling And Fabrication Of Shear Mode Bulk Acoustic Wave Sensor As A Potential Biosensor, Chi-Jung Cheng

Dissertations

There has been an increasing interest in development of thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) devices for chemical and biological sensing applications in the environmental and biomedical industries. The zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film based FBAR devices provides attractive advantages, such as high resonant frequency, small size, and rapid response. Typically, the ZnO-based FBAR devices are operated in the longitudinal wave mode where the ZnO crystallites are perpendicular to the substrate. In gaseous environments, the longitudinal mode FBAR device provides high sensitivity for mass sensing. However, the longitudinal wave mode is adversely affected when used in liquid environments because …

Discrete Targeting Of Peptide And Non-Peptide Neurotransmitters By A Single Neuron, Daniel Kueh Jun 2012

Discrete Targeting Of Peptide And Non-Peptide Neurotransmitters By A Single Neuron, Daniel Kueh

Dissertations

The heart excitor (HE) motor neuron in the medicinal leech, Hirudo, releases acetylcholine (ACh) and a peptide, FMRFamide, to regulate the contractile activity of the heart tube and associated side vessels. Consistent with Dale’s Principle, it was assumed that both neurotransmitters were coreleased by all presynaptic varicosities. However, discrete peptide-positive and peptide-negative varicosities can be found consistently at particular sites of innervation on the heart tube. Dual-labeled HE neurons were produced by pressure injecting Neurobiotin into single HE neurons and applied antibodies against FMRFamide on the same preparations. Consistent with initial expectations, peptide-labeled varicosities were numerous and widely distributed …

Aggregates of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides have been implicated in the etiology of Alzheimer disease. Among the different forms of Aβ aggregates, low molecular weight species ranging between ∼2- and 50-mers, also called “soluble oligomers,” have emerged as the species responsible for early synaptic dysfunction and neuronal loss. Emerging evidence suggests that the neurotoxic oligomers need not be formed along the obligatory nucleation-dependant fibril formation pathway. In our earlier work, we reported the isolation of one such “off-pathway” 12–18-mer species of Aβ42 generated from fatty acids called large fatty acid-derived oligomers (LFAOs) (Kumar, A., Bullard, R. L., Patel, P., Paslay, L. …
