Partners In Flight Strategic Action Plan
Partners In Flight Strategic Action Plan
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Introduction
Partners in Flight (PIF) celebrated its 20th anniversary in bird conservation in 2010. To prepare for the next 20 years, the PIF Steering Committee held a facilitated strategic planning session on 11-12 September 2011, near Omaha, NE. Participants reaffirmed the value and centrality of PIF’s mission and goals.
Partners In Flight Mission
The Partners in Flight mission is expressed in three related concepts:
*Helping Species at Risk – Species must be conserved before they become imperiled. Allowing species to become threatened or endangered results in long-term and costly recovery efforts whose success is far from guaranteed. Endangered species …

Multi-Locus Phylogeographic And Population Genetic Analysis Of Anolis Carolinensis: Historical Demography Of A Genomic Model Species, Marc Tollis, Gavriel Ausubel, Dhruba Ghimire, Stéphane Boissinot
Publications and Research
The green anole (Anolis carolinensis) has been widely used as an animal model in physiology and neurobiology but has recently emerged as an important genomic model. The recent sequencing of its genome has shed new light on the evolution of vertebrate genomes and on the process that govern species diversification. Surprisingly, the patterns of genetic diversity within natural populations of this widespread and abundant North American lizard remain relatively unknown. In the present study, we use 10 novel nuclear DNA sequence loci (N = 62 to 152) and one mitochondrial locus (N = 226) to delimit green anole populations and …

Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Emergence Of Organizational Forms, Walter W. Powell, Kurt Sandholtz
Faculty Publications
We study the emergence of organizational forms, focusing on two mechanisms—reconfiguration and transposition—that distinguish the founding models of the first 26 biotechnology companies, all created in the industry's first decade, from 1972 to 1981. We analyze rich archival data using hierarchical cluster analysis, revealing four organizational variants of the dedicated biotech firm (DBF). Three were products of reconfiguration, as executives from Big Pharma used past practices to incorporate new science. One DBF variant resulted from 'amphibious' scientists who imported organizing ideas from the academy into their VC-funded start-ups. We argue that such transpositions are fragile, yet charged with generative possibilities. …

Roosting Ecology And Survey Of Endangered And Species Of Special Concern Bats In The Mid-South Prior To The Arrival Of White Nose Syndrome, Tracy Lee Klotz
Roosting Ecology And Survey Of Endangered And Species Of Special Concern Bats In The Mid-South Prior To The Arrival Of White Nose Syndrome, Tracy Lee Klotz
Student Theses and Dissertations
The proper management of any species requires baseline knowledge such as populations, diversity and habitat requirements. This thesis answers some of these vital questions about endangered (gray bat, Indiana bat and Ozark big-eared bat) and species of concern (Rafinesque's big-eared bat and southeastern myotis) bats in the mid-south. I conducted a mist net bat surveys at Donaldson Point Conservation Area (DPCA) in southeast Missouri and Rosson Hollow in west Arkansas. Both species of special concern were captured in DCPA and the species diversity of the area is consistent with similar habitat in northeast Arkansas. The species diversity in Rosson Hollow …

Change As A Service: Challenges And Effects Of A New Paradigm For Library Systems And Content Infrastructure, Daniel Forsman
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The infrastructure for supplying information resources to higher education and research has gone through dramatic changes the last 15 years. The amount of electronic resources available and library systems that handle them have multiplied leaving libraries in a challenging situation. We are coping with a changing definition of library collections, changing business models for owning and accessing materials as well as a shift in the architecture of library systems.
The Library at Chalmers University of Technology spent close to 98% of the media budget in 2010 on electronic resources and has been spending more than 50% of the budget on …

Mendeley: Teaching Scholarly Communication And Collaboration Through Social Networking, Don Macmillan
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Teaching Mendeley achieves the impossible – it gets users excited to learn about organizing and citing their research articles. However, introducing Mendeley to students and faculty goes well beyond assisting them with organizing their references. Students are particularly apt to see the benefits that its social networking features offer, including promoting collaboration, identifying key resources, and facilitating group work. There are benefits for librarians too - the information it provides on the use of articles can contribute to collection development or research into patterns of information as well as promoting librarian expertise.
As a free citation manager, Mendeley consists of …

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood
Theses and Dissertations
Many art historians have debated the identity of the couple in Rembrandt's the Jewish Bride (1667). The painting is most often identified as an Old Testament theme. This is due to the seventeenth-century Dutch practice of using biblical "types" as ideal models for the structuring of the new republic founded on the Israelite ideology of nation building. Three of these biblical female types that have been separately associated with the female figure in the Jewish Bride are, Rebecca, Ruth, and Esther. As these biblical women represented different notions of power through their respective narratives, this thesis argues that Rembrandt deliberately …

Technology In The Aid Of Delivering Economic Content To Teachers: Virtual Economics V. 3, John R. Swinton, Benjamin Scafidi
Faculty Articles
We examine the impact on student achievement of a face-to-face teacher workshop that also provides economics instructors with access to an electronic library of instructional and reference material for their economics classroom—Virtual Economics v. 3 (VE3), offered by the Council for Economic Education. Based on evidence using student and teacher-level administrative data from the Georgia Department of Education and controlling for students’ prior achievement in mathematics, we find evidence that the VE3 workshop experience increases student achievement in high school economics. Our difference-in-differences estimates suggest that teacher participation in the VE3 workshop increases student achievement by 0.061 standard deviations on …

Dramatic Shifts In Benthic Microbial Eukaryote Communities Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Holly M. Bik, Kenneth M. Halanych, Jyotsna Sharma, W. Kelley Thomas
Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)
Benthic habitats harbour a significant (yet unexplored) diversity of microscopic eukaryote taxa, including metazoan phyla, protists, algae and fungi. These groups are thought to underpin ecosystem functioning across diverse marine environments. Coastal marine habitats in the Gulf of Mexico experienced visible, heavy impacts following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, yet our scant knowledge of prior eukaryotic biodiversity has precluded a thorough assessment of this disturbance. Using a marker gene and morphological approach, we present an intensive evaluation of microbial eukaryote communities prior to and following oiling around heavily impacted shorelines. Our results show significant changes in community structure, …

BACKGROUND: Variability exists in children's activity patterns due to the association with environmental, social, demographic, and inter-individual factors. This study described accelerometer assessed physical activity patterns of high and low active children during segmented school week days whilst controlling for potential correlates.
METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-three children (mean age: 10.7 ± 0.3 yrs, 55.6% girls, 18.9% overweight/obese) from 8 north-west England primary schools wore ActiGraph GT1M accelerometers for 7 consecutive days during autumn of 2009. ActiGraph counts were converted to minutes of moderate (MPA), vigorous (VPA) and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) physical activity. Children were classified as high active (HIGH) or …

Association Of A Multi-Synthetase Complex With Translating Ribosomes In The Archaeon Thermococcus Kodakarensis, Medha Raina, Sara Elgamal, Thomas J. Santangelo, Michael Ibba
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
In archaea and eukaryotes aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) associate in multi-synthetase complexes (MSCs), however the role of such MSCs in translation is unknown. MSC function was investigated in vivo in the archaeon Thermococcus kodakarensis, wherein six aaRSs were affinity co-purified together with several other factors involved in protein synthesis, suggesting that MSCs may interact directly with translating ribosomes. In support of this hypothesis, the aminoacyltRNA synthetase (aaRS) activities of the MSC were enriched in isolated T. kodakarensis polysome fractions. These data indicate that components of the archaeal protein synthesis machinery associate into macromolecular assemblies in vivo and provide the potential …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Endothelial To Mesenchymal Cell Transition (Endomt) In Experimentally Induced Fibrotic Diseases., Sonsoles Piera-Velazquez, Sergio A. Jimenez
Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations
Several recent studies have demonstrated that endothelial to mesenchymal transition (EndoMT), a newly recognized type of cellular transdifferentiation may be an important source of myofibroblasts during the development of experimentally induced pulmonary, cardiac and kidney fibrosis. EndoMT is a complex biological process induced by members of the transforming growth factor (TGF-β) family of regulatory polypeptides in which endothelial cells adopt a mesenchymal or myofibroblastic phenotype acquiring motile and contractile properties and initiating expression of mesenchymal cell products such as α smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and type I collagen. Although these experimental studies provide compelling evidence for the participation of EndoMT …

On Identification Of Natural Direct Effects When A Confounder Of The Mediator Is Directly Affected By Exposure, Eric J. Tchetgen Tchetgen, Tyler J. Vanderweele
COBRA Preprint Series
Natural direct and indirect effects formalize traditional notions of mediation analysis into a rigorous causal framework and have recently received considerable attention in epidemiology and in the social sciences. Sufficient conditions for identification of natural direct effects were formulated by Judea Pearl under a nonparametric structural equations model, which assumes certain independencies between potential outcomes. A common situation in epidemiology is that a confounder of the mediator is affected by the exposure, in which case, natural direct effects fail to be nonparametrically identified without additional assumptions, even under Pearl's nonparametric structural equations model. In this paper, the authors show that …

When Is General Wariness Favored In Avoiding Multiple Predator Types?, Bo Brilot, M Bateson, D Nettle, Mj Whittingham, Jc Read
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Adaptive responses to predation are generally studied assuming only one predator type exists, but most prey species are depredated by multiple types. When multiple types occur, the optimal antipredator response level may be determined solely by the probability of attack by the relevant predator: "specific responsiveness." Conversely, an increase in the probability of attack by one predator type might increase responsiveness to an alternative predator type: "general wariness." We formulate a mathematical model in which a prey animal perceives a cue providing information on the probability of two predator types being present. It can perform one of two evasive behaviors …
