Petitioning For Grandparent Visitation, State By State, Julie A. Braun Aug 2012

Petitioning For Grandparent Visitation, State By State, Julie A. Braun

Marquette Elder's Advisor

This article discusses varying legislation enacted by all fifty states that allow grandparents to petition for visitation with their grandchildren. While some states allow a grandparent to petition for visitation at any time, the majority of states require a disruption of an intact nuclear family before a grandparent may petition for visitation. The article identifies practice tips and discusses conditions or restrictions a court may impose on the visitation.

Grandparents' Right To Visitation, Victoria Roth Aug 2012

Grandparents' Right To Visitation, Victoria Roth

Marquette Elder's Advisor

Many lawyers, it seems steer clear of "grandparents' rights" by declining cases in which a court orders parents or stepparents to let a grandparent visit their grandchild. Is it because of lack of familiarity with such action, or are they uneasy with the concept of rights of grandparents?

Wednesday Communiqué, 8/22/2012, Chaouki Abdallah

Publications of the Provost's Office

I am confident you are all enjoying your 3rd day of the Fall 2012 semester. As you approach your work this semester, many goals may seem possible and within reach. While I feel the same, I tend to overestimate my abilities and underestimate cost and time for almost everything I do. It may behoove us to consider the planning fallacy, or the tendency for people and organizations to underestimate how long they will need to complete a task, even when they have experience of similar tasks over-running.''

Oncolytic Virotherapy Of Ovarian Cancer, Shoudong Li, Jessica Tong, Masmudur M. Rahman, Trevor G. Shepherd, Grant Mcfadden

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

In the past two decades, more than 20 viruses with selective tropism for tumor cells have been developed as oncolytic viruses (OVs) for treatments of a variety of malignancies. Of these viruses, eleven have been tested in human ovarian cancer models in preclinical studies. So far, nine phase I or II clinical trials have been conducted or initiated using four different types of OVs in patients with recurrent ovarian cancers. In this article, we summarize the different OVs that are being assessed as therapeutics for ovarian cancer. We also present an overview of recent advances in identification of key genetic …

Evaluating Community Gardens As Habitat For An Urban Butterfly, Kevin C. Matteson, Gail Langellotto Aug 2012

Evaluating Community Gardens As Habitat For An Urban Butterfly, Kevin C. Matteson, Gail Langellotto

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Although many butterfly species persist in heavily developed landscapes, it is unclear what factors influence movements of butterflies among urban habitat patches. We used mark-recapture and translocation experiments to assess residency and movement of the highly successful urban butterfly, Pieris rapae, within and among community gardens of New York City. Although the majority of marked butterflies used gardens transiently, a small number remained for several days. Recruitment (via pupation and/or immigration) and residence time of P. rapae adults was higher in larger gardens and gardens with more flowers. Residence time, but not recruitment, was influenced by the amount of surrounding …

The Role Of Il-2/Il-2r Signaling For Treg Cell Development, Homeostasis And Function, Guoyan Cheng Aug 2012

The Role Of Il-2/Il-2r Signaling For Treg Cell Development, Homeostasis And Function, Guoyan Cheng

Open Access Dissertations

CD4+ Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells belong to a distinct T cell lineage which develops in the thymus and is essential for the prevention of self-reactivity by suppressing peripheral auto-reactive T cells that escape thymic negative selection. IL-2/IL-2R signaling is crucial and non-redundant for the development of thymic Treg cells, as well as the homeostasis and competitive fitness of peripheral Treg cells. The central role of IL-2 in Treg biology is exemplified by the uncontrolled massive lymphoproliferation associated with IL-2-/-, IL-2Rα-/- and IL-2Rβ-/- mice which typically die by 4-12 week of age. It is noteworthy that a restored normal percentage …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine patterns of involvement relating to the sport club student athletes during the 2011/12 academic year at Rowan University. The study also sought to examine how this involvement affected attitudes of students toward various aspects of campus. Survey responses were analyzed to determine frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentages and correlations between demographics and reported involvement activities. The study examined the similarities between club sports, varsity athletics, and student government involvement at Rowan University. The findings suggested that students involved in sport clubs chose other physical activities, such as exercising and intramural athletics, as …

Multipartite Quantum Entanglement Evolution In Photosynthetic Complexes, Jing Zhu, Sabre Kais, Alan Aspuru-Guzik, Sam Rodriques, Ben Brock, Peter J. Love Aug 2012

Multipartite Quantum Entanglement Evolution In Photosynthetic Complexes, Jing Zhu, Sabre Kais, Alan Aspuru-Guzik, Sam Rodriques, Ben Brock, Peter J. Love

Birck and NCN Publications

We investigate the evolution of entanglement in the Fenna-Matthew-Olson (FMO) complex based on simulations using the scaled hierarchical equations of motion approach. We examine the role of entanglement in the FMO complex by direct computation of the convex roof. We use monogamy to give a lower bound for entanglement and obtain an upper bound from the evaluation of the convex roof. Examination of bipartite measures for all possible bipartitions provides a complete picture of the multipartite entanglement. Our results support the hypothesis that entanglement is maximum primary along the two distinct electronic energy transfer pathways. In addition, we note that …

Plant Calcium Content: Ready To Remodel, Jian Yang, Tracy Punshon, Mary Lou Guerinot, Kendal D. Hirschi

Dartmouth Scholarship

By identifying the relationship between calcium location in the plant cell and nutrient bioavailability, the plant characteristics leading to maximal calcium absorption by humans can be identified. Knowledge of plant cellular and molecular targets controlling calcium location in plants is emerging. These insights should allow for better strategies for increasing the nutritional content of foods. In particular, the use of preparation-free elemental imaging technologies such as synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) microscopy in plant biology may allow researchers to understand the relationship between subcellular location and nutrient bioavailability. These approaches may lead to better strategies for altering the location of calcium …

A Support Vector Machine Based Test For Incongruence Between Sets Of Trees In Tree Space, David C. Haws, Peter Huggins, Eric M. O'Neill, David W. Weisrock, Ruriko Yoshida

Statistics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The increased use of multi-locus data sets for phylogenetic reconstruction has increased the need to determine whether a set of gene trees significantly deviate from the phylogenetic patterns of other genes. Such unusual gene trees may have been influenced by other evolutionary processes such as selection, gene duplication, or horizontal gene transfer.

RESULTS: Motivated by this problem we propose a nonparametric goodness-of-fit test for two empirical distributions of gene trees, and we developed the software GeneOut to estimate a p-value for the test. Our approach maps trees into a multi-dimensional vector space and then applies support vector machines (SVMs) …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pulmonary damage caused by chronic colonization of the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung by microbial communities is the proximal cause of respiratory failure. While there has been an effort to document the microbiome of the CF lung in pediatric and adult patients, little is known regarding the developing microflora in infants. We examined the respiratory and intestinal microbiota development in infants with CF from birth to 21 months. Distinct genera dominated in the gut compared to those in the respiratory tract, yet some bacteria overlapped, demonstrating a core microbiota dominated by Veillonella and Streptococcus. Bacterial diversity increased significantly over time, …

Mammalian Per2 Regulates Akt Activation And Dna Damage Response, Xiaoming Yang, Xuezhong He, Zhengguan Yang, Esmaiel Jabbari Aug 2012

Mammalian Per2 Regulates Akt Activation And Dna Damage Response, Xiaoming Yang, Xuezhong He, Zhengguan Yang, Esmaiel Jabbari

Faculty Publications

PER2 is a key mammalian circadian clock protein. It also has a tumor suppressive function. Down regulation of PER2 in the cultured cancer cells accelerates cell proliferation, while overexpression of PER2 inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis. The Per2 mutant mice have a cancer prone phenotype and an altered DNA damage response. Here we report that PER2 regulates AKT activity. Cells with down-regulated PER2 expression have prolonged high levels of AKT T308 phosphorylation after growth factor stimulation or DNA damage. PER2 down-regulation delays DNA damage induced Chk2 activation and overrides DNA damage induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.
