An Overview Of Laser Operation And Modelocking Of A Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (Vecsel), Aaron Allen

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

VECSEL laser systems are important additions to the family of lasers. They exhibit a combination of desirable lasing features that are usually not simultaneously attainable. These features are high power, diffraction limited beam quality, intra-cavity frequency doubling, tunability, and ultrashort pulses generated from passive mode-locking. In this work, we give a brief overview of the VECSEL structure, previous VECSEL literature, how lasing in a VECSEL works, and how mode locking in a VECSEL works.

This study focuses on understanding conceptualization patterns of children's mental health among low-income Mexican immigrant mothers. I utilize the social construction framework to investigate the social nature of the construct mental health. I also engage with the medicalization literature to shed light on the biomedical model's perspective on mental health. Nine focus groups were …

Experimental Study Of Electrostatic Aerosol Filtration At Moderate Filter Face Velocity, Andres Sanchez Aug 2012

Experimental Study Of Electrostatic Aerosol Filtration At Moderate Filter Face Velocity, Andres Sanchez

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Electrostatic filtration media (electret) has been used in many applications due to its ability to efficiently collect submicron particles while maintaining a low pressure drop. Filter face velocities have ranged from 0.01-0.5 m/s in previous studies. However, in this study, measurements were conducted from 0.5-2.5 m/s, a region where Reynolds numbers range from 0.05-0.24. Within this regime, commonly used filtration theory is incomplete and does not predict performance of electret media, therefore data must be measured. Experimental measurements were conducted in various combinations of charge and neutralized filter media with aerosolized particles possessing the Boltzmann charge distribution or zero charge. …

Development And Partial Characterization Of Agonistic Ox40 Aptamer Anti-Cblb Sirna Conjugates, Dawn Seales Aug 2012

Development And Partial Characterization Of Agonistic Ox40 Aptamer Anti-Cblb Sirna Conjugates, Dawn Seales

Open Access Theses

Tumors that develop in patients with fully functional immune systems evolve different mechanisms of immune suppression that must be counteracted for tumor immunotherapy to be effective. The proposed therapeutic aims to co-stimulate T-cells via OX40, a co-stimulatory receptor expressed on activated T-cells. Signaling via OX40 leads to prolonged survival of activated T-cells, enhanced memory formation, and protection against immunosuppression. In addition to boosting co-stimulation, we aim to enhance T-cell activation by downregulating Cbl-b, an E3 ubiquitin ligase that suppresses T-cell activation. An RNA aptamer that binds OX40 was conjugated to anti-Cbl-b siRNA and was shown by a luciferase reporter assay …

The Law Applicable On The Continental Shelf And In The Exclusive Economic Zone, Moira Mcconnell Aug 2012

The Law Applicable On The Continental Shelf And In The Exclusive Economic Zone, Moira Mcconnell

Research Papers, Working Papers, Conference Papers

As an initial observation I note that this topic presents a challenge for comparative law scholars As one scholar suggested in correspondence about the questionnaire for this Session the topic is arguably simply a question of implementation of public international law rather than domestic and comparative law as such This view points to a problem of disciplinary boundaries and the potential overlap between comparative law and international law and the emerging regional law scholarship I mention this at the beginning of my General Report because that tension is apparent in both the National Reports and the questionnaire prepared for this …

Urban Development In Costa Rica: The Direct And Indirect Impacts On Local And Regional Avian Assemblages, Jeff L. Norris

Dissertations

Urban development, the pinnacle of human land use, has drastic effects on native ecosystems and the species they contain. For the first time in recorded history there are more people living in cities than in the rural areas surrounding them. Furthermore, the global rate of urbanization continues increasing; raising serious concerns for earth's tropical regions as they harbor a disproportionate amount of the earth's species, and where the impacts of urban development on natural communities are poorly known. Therefore, for my dissertation research I investigated the impacts of urban development on avian community structure and organization at both local and …

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Ada3 protein is an essential component of histone acetyl transferase containing coactivator complexes conserved from yeast to human. We show here that germline deletion of Ada3 in mouse is embryonic lethal, and adenovirus-Cre mediated conditional deletion of Ada3 in Ada3(FL/FL) mouse embryonic fibroblasts leads to a severe proliferation defect which was rescued by ectopic expression of human Ada3. A delay in G(1) to S phase of cell cycle was also seen that was due to accumulation of Cdk inhibitor p27 which was an indirect effect of c-myc gene transcription control by Ada3. We further showed that this defect could be …

Synthesis And Catalytic Applications Of Platinum(Ii) And Palladium(Ii)-Pta And Dapta Complexes, Sitaram Acharya Aug 2012

Synthesis And Catalytic Applications Of Platinum(Ii) And Palladium(Ii)-Pta And Dapta Complexes, Sitaram Acharya

Dissertations

The cage-like tertiary phosphine, 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) has recently received interest because of its water-solubility, air-stability, non-ionic, non-surfactant, and basic nature. These properties can solubilize transition metal complexes in the aqueous phase. A related air-stable derivative, N,N’-diacetyl-1-3-5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (DAPTA) has greater water-solubility than PTA, however, its coordination chemistry has not been significantly explored. This study involved the synthesis and characterization of a series of novel air-stable and water-soluble four-coordinated dialkyl, dialkynyl, dihalo, and halo(alkyl) complexes of platinum and palladium bearing PTA and DAPTA ligands. The alkyl complexes of the type MX(R)P2 (M = Pt, Pd; X = Cl, Br, I; R = …

The Mre11 Nuclease Is Critical For The Sensitivity Of Cells To Chk1 Inhibition, Ruth Thompson, Ryan Montano, Alan Eastman Aug 2012

The Mre11 Nuclease Is Critical For The Sensitivity Of Cells To Chk1 Inhibition, Ruth Thompson, Ryan Montano, Alan Eastman

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Chk1 kinase is required for the arrest of cell cycle progression when DNA is damaged, and for stabilizing stalled replication forks. As a consequence, many Chk1 inhibitors have been developed and tested for their potential to enhance DNA damage-induced tumor cell killing. However, inhibition of Chk1 alone, without any additional exogenous agent, can be cytotoxic. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of this sensitivity is critical for defining which patients might respond best to therapy with Chk1 inhibitors. We have investigated the mechanism of sensitivity in U2OS osteosarcoma cells. Upon incubation with the Chk1 inhibitor MK-8776, single-stranded DNA regions (ssDNA) and …

Role Of Sequence And Structure Of The Hendra Fusion Protein Fusion Peptide In Membrane Fusion, Everett Clinton Smith, Sonia M. Gregory, Lukas K. Tamm, Trevor P. Creamer, Rebecca Ellis Dutch

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Viral fusion proteins are intriguing molecular machines that undergo drastic conformational changes to facilitate virus-cell membrane fusion. During fusion a hydrophobic region of the protein, termed the fusion peptide (FP), is inserted into the target host cell membrane, with subsequent conformational changes culminating in membrane merger. Class I fusion proteins contain FPs between 20 and 30 amino acids in length that are highly conserved within viral families but not between. To examine the sequence dependence of the Hendra virus (HeV) fusion (F) protein FP, the first eight amino acids were mutated first as double, then single, alanine mutants. Mutation of …

Development Of Repressible Systems To Control Gene Expression In Vaccinia Virus, Allison Titong Aug 2012

Development Of Repressible Systems To Control Gene Expression In Vaccinia Virus, Allison Titong

Master's Theses

Two vaccinia virus (VACV) expression systems that contain elements from the lactose (lac) and the tetracycline (tet) operons of E. coli were developed to repress the expression of a reporter gene, enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), in the presence of tet operon inducers. In the first system, lac and tet operon elements were arranged in a gene circuit, and in the presence of increasing concentrations of a lac operon inducer (isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactoside, IPTG), EGFP expression increased in a dose dependent manner and at high IPTG concentrations, expression reached the same levels as a positive control virus. Importantly, in the …

Sex Determination In Beetles: Production Of All Male Progeny By Parental Rnai Knockdown Of Transformer, Jayendra Nath Shukla, Subba Reddy Palli Aug 2012

Sex Determination In Beetles: Production Of All Male Progeny By Parental Rnai Knockdown Of Transformer, Jayendra Nath Shukla, Subba Reddy Palli

Entomology Faculty Publications

Sex in insects is determined by a cascade of regulators ultimately controlling sex-specific splicing of a transcription factor, Doublesex (Dsx). We recently identified homolog of dsx in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Tcdsx). Here, we report on the identification and characterization of a regulator of Tcdsx splicing in T. castaneum. Two male-specific and one female-specific isoforms of T. castaneum transformer (Tctra) were identified. RNA interference-aided knockdown of Tctra in pupa or adults caused a change in sex from females to males by diverting the splicing of Tcdsx pre-mRNA to male-specific isoform. All the pupa and adults developed from Tctra …
