Yeast 2-Hybrid Screen For T. Brucei Tin2- And Rap1- Intracting Proteins, Miao Wang, Fan Wu
Undergraduate Research Posters 2012
Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes located at the ends of linear chromosomes. Acting like a cap, they protect chromosome ends from degradation and rearrangement, maintaining genomic stability. Our lab has identified several T. brucei telomere proteins, including TRF (TTAGGG Repeat-binding Factor), TIN2 (TRF1-interacting Nulcear Protein 2) and RAP1 (Repressor Activator Protein 1) homologs. We are currently verifying the interactions between the new candidates and TbTIN2 or TbRAP1.

BACKGROUND: Recombination activation gene 1 deficient (rag1(-/-)) mutant zebrafish have a reduced lymphocyte-like cell population that lacks functional B and T lymphocytes of the acquired immune system, but includes Natural Killer (NK)-like cells and Non-specific cytotoxic cells (NCC) of the innate immune system. The innate immune system is thought to lack the adaptive characteristics of an acquired immune system that provide enhanced protection to a second exposure of the same pathogen. It has been shown that NK cells have the ability to mediate adaptive immunity to chemical haptens and cytomegalovirus in murine models. In this study we evaluated the ability …

An Integrated Encyclopedia Of Dna Elements In The Human Genome, Jainab Khatun
An Integrated Encyclopedia Of Dna Elements In The Human Genome, Jainab Khatun
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The human genome encodes the blueprint of life, but the function of the vast majority of its nearly three billion bases is unknown. The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project has systematically mapped regions of transcription, transcription factor association, chromatin structure and histone modification. These data enabled us to assign biochemical functions for 80% of the genome, in particular outside of the well-studied protein-coding regions. Many discovered candidate regulatory elements are physically associated with one another and with expressed genes, providing new insights into the mechanisms of gene regulation. The newly identified elements also show a statistical correspondence to sequence …

Oncostatin M (OSM) is an interleukin-6 (IL-6) family cytokine that has been implicated in a number of biological processes including inflammation, hematopoiesis, immune responses, development, and bone homeostasis. Recent evidence suggests that OSM may promote breast tumor invasion and metastasis. We investigated the role of OSM in the formation of bone metastases in vivo using the 4T1.2 mouse mammary tumor model in which OSM expression was knocked down using shRNA (4T1.2-OSM). 4T1.2-OSM cells were injected orthotopically into Balb/c mice, resulting in a greater than 97% decrease in spontaneous metastasis to bone compared to control cells. Intratibial injection of these same …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
Background:
Numerous techniques have been described for nasal septal perforation repair, with various degrees of success in achieving closure. Evidence supports the use of bilateral mucoperichondrial advancement flaps with interpositional grafting for greatest success. Many surgeons use autografts such as fascia, cartilage, bone, and pericranium, however, extracellular matrices have also become popular.
Objective:
We analyze factors determining the success of nasal septal perforations repaired using using an acellular, freeze-dried interpositional xenograft derived from Porcine Small Intestinal Submucosa (PSIS).
Methods:
Patients with septal perforation repaired by the senior author from 1998 to 2006 were examined in a retrospective chart review with …

The Cyclase-Associated Protein Cap1 Is Important For Proper Regulation Of Infection-Related Morphogenesis In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Xiaoying Zhou, Haifeng Zhang, Guotian Li, Brian Shaw, Jin-Rong Xu
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
Surface recognition and penetration are critical steps in the infection cycle of many plant pathogenic fungi. In Magnaporthe oryzae, cAMP signaling is involved in surface recognition and pathogenesis. Deletion of the MAC1 adenylate cyclase gene affected appressorium formation and plant infection. In this study, we used the affinity purification approach to identify proteins that are associated with Mac1 in vivo. One of the Mac1-interacting proteins is the adenylate cyclase-associated protein named Cap1. CAP genes are well-conserved in phytopathogenic fungi but none of them have been functionally characterized. Deletion of CAP1 blocked the effects of a dominant RAS2 allele …

Through A Feminist Lens: Language, Power And Identity In Catalan Nationalism, Christine Gallagher Kearney
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
The goal for my master’s thesis is to understand how the working class women of Catalunya (specifically women that lived in the small farming villages in the region of Les Garrigues),contributed to the survival of Catalan. Catalunya is an autonomous region of Spain that endured more than three decades of the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1934-1975) that attempted to eradicate the Catalan language and culture. As stated by Everly (2003): “[…] the regional exile of Catalunya from the rest of Spain acts as a backdrop provoking women to go a step further and experiment with their own sense of gender separation …

The Roles Of Empathy And Anger In The Regulation Of Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
The Roles Of Empathy And Anger In The Regulation Of Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
Open Access Theses
Some researchers have recently promoted the idea that humans possess an instinct to “altruistically” punish social norm violators—that is, to intervene as unaffected third parties and punish transgressors at a personal cost, even when they have no hope of reaping any direct benefit from the punishment. Both the evolutionary theorizing and the empirical findings that are marshaled in support of this claim have been called into question, and results from a recent investigation strongly suggest that humans do not, in fact, punish altruistically as third parties on behalf of strangers. However, humans do engage in third-party punishment on behalf of …

The Anchor: 2012
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a light-based treatment modality in which wavelength specific activation of a photosensitizer (PS) generates cytotoxic response in the irradiated region. PDT response is critically dependent on several parameters including light dose, PS dose, uptake time, fluence rate, and the mode of light delivery. While the systematic optimization of these treatment parameters can be complex, it also provides multiple avenues for en- hancement of PDT efficacy under diverse treatment conditions, provided that a rational framework is established to quantify the impact of parameter selection upon treatment re- sponse. Here we present a theranostic technique, combining the inherent …

Case Study Of Indoor Air Quality Of Health Care Facilities And Hospitals In Malaysia / Phuah Kok Sun, Kok Sun Phuah
Student Works (2010-2019)
Hospitals and healthcare facilities are buildings that require proper design for diverse environment due to their nature. The comfort of occupants and the spread of germs should be consider in the design of such facilities. Airborne diseases have become a serious concern after the spread of influenza H1N1 and Severe Acture Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) viruses. Healthcare facilities, particularly those built in the past, do not consider air as the transport medium for infectious diseases. Most of the recent studies in indoor air control revolve around specialized environments such as isolation rooms and operating theatres. This dissertation studies the indoor air …
