School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Diel vertical migration (DVM) of some zooplankters in eutrophic lakes is often compressed during peak hypoxia. To better understand the indirect consequences of seasonal hypolimnetic hypoxia, we integrated laboratory-based experimental and field-based observational approaches to quantify how compressed DVM can affect growth of a cladoceran, Daphnia mendotae, in central Lake Erie, North America. To evaluate hypoxia tolerance of D. mendotae, we conducted a survivorship experiment with varying dissolved oxygen concentrations, which demonstrated high sensitivity of D. mendotae to hypoxia (≤2 mg O2 l−1), supporting the field observations of their behavioral avoidance of the hypoxic hypolimnion. To investigate the …

Is A Final Theory Conceivable?, Donald W. Zimmerman Sep 2012

Is A Final Theory Conceivable?, Donald W. Zimmerman

The Psychological Record

Some physicists believe that a final theory, which will unify separate branches of theoretical physics, including quantum field theory and general relativity, is imminent. The physicists who expect such a theory typically assume that ultimate natural laws will be expressed by the same mathematical formalism which is associated with present-day physics. This view is questionable, because mathematics itself evolves and is not currently in a finished form. Historically, a succession of discoveries in physics has unveiled new laws of nature, each stage being made possible by the development of new mathematics. Evolutionary biology and interbehavioral psychology, ordinarily overlooked by the …

On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff Sep 2012

On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff

Between the Species

In his essay “The Integration of the Ethic of the Respectful Use of Animals into the Law”, David Favre begins to articulate a new framework for understanding the legal status of nonhuman animals. The present essay supports the broad contours of Favre’s framework, but raises challenges for some of the framework’s elements. The first half questions Favre’s claim that possession of DNA and the capacity for life underlie the need for a more robust conception of animal legal standing. The second half questions Favre’s prior proposal that animals be deemed persons under law and questions his pragmatic suggestion that judges …

Skeletal Muscle Volume Following Dehydration Induced By Exercise In Heat, Kyle J. Hackney, Summer B. Cook, Timothy J. Fairchild, Lori L. Ploutz-Snyder Sep 2012

Skeletal Muscle Volume Following Dehydration Induced By Exercise In Heat, Kyle J. Hackney, Summer B. Cook, Timothy J. Fairchild, Lori L. Ploutz-Snyder

Kinesiology

Background

Intracellular skeletal muscle water is redistributed into the extracellular compartment during periods of dehydration, suggesting an associated decline in muscle volume. The purpose of this study was to evaluate skeletal muscle volume in active (knee extensors (KE)) and less active (biceps/triceps brachii, deltoid) musculature following dehydration induced by exercise in heat.

Methods

Twelve participants (seven men, five women) cycled in the heat under two conditions: (1) dehydration (DHYD) resulting in 3% and 5% losses of estimated total body water (ETBW), which was assessed by changes in body mass, and (2) fluid replacement (FR) where 3% and 5% …

Sex & Vision I: Spatio-Temporal Resolution, Israel Abramov, James Gordon, Olga Feldman, Alla Chavarga Sep 2012

Sex & Vision I: Spatio-Temporal Resolution, Israel Abramov, James Gordon, Olga Feldman, Alla Chavarga

Publications and Research

Background Cerebral cortex has a very large number of testosterone receptors, which could be a basis for sex differences in sensory functions. For example, audition has clear sex differences, which are related to serum testosterone levels. Of all major sensory systems only vision has not been examined for sex differences, which is surprising because occipital lobe (primary visual projection area) may have the highest density of testosterone receptors in the cortex. We have examined a basic visual function: spatial and temporal pattern resolution and acuity. Methods We tested large groups of young adults with normal vision. They were screened with …

Sex And Vision Ii: Color Appearance Of Monochromatic Lights, Israel Abramov, James Gordon, Olga Feldman, Alla Chavarga

Publications and Research

Background Because cerebral cortex has a very large number of testosterone receptors, we examined the possible sex differences in color appearance of monochromatic lights across the visible spectrum. There is a history of men and women perceiving color differently. However, all of these studies deal with higher cognitive functions which may be culture-biased. We study basic visual functions, such as color appearance, without reference to any objects. We present here a detailed analysis of sex differences in primary chromatic sensations. Methods We tested large groups of young adults with normal vision, including spatial and temporal resolution, and stereopsis. Based on …

Formation And Stabilization Of Combustion-Generated, Environmentally Persistent Radicals On Ni(Ii)O Supported On A Silica Surface, Eric Vejerano, Slawomir M. Lomnicki, Barry Dellinger Sep 2012

Formation And Stabilization Of Combustion-Generated, Environmentally Persistent Radicals On Ni(Ii)O Supported On A Silica Surface, Eric Vejerano, Slawomir M. Lomnicki, Barry Dellinger

Faculty Publications

Previous studies have indicated environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are formed when hydroxyl- and chlorine-substituted aromatics chemisorbed on Cu(II)O and Fe(III)2O3 surfaces and were stabilized through their interactions with the surface metal cation. The current study reports our laboratory investigation on the formation and stabilization of EPFRs on a Ni(II)O surface. The EPFRs were produced by the chemisorption of adsorbates on the supported metal oxide surface and transfer of an electron from the adsorbate to the metal center, resulting in reduction of the metal cation. Depending on the temperature and the nature of the adsorbate, more than one type of …

Regional Rarity: Consequences Of Dispersal Limitation And Strategies For Reintroduction, Steven James Kroiss Sep 2012

Regional Rarity: Consequences Of Dispersal Limitation And Strategies For Reintroduction, Steven James Kroiss

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Understanding factors that limit species distributions within restored habitats has been a longstanding goal of restoration ecology, particularly with respect to differences between rare and widespread species. Numerous mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to rarity, including species traits, propagule limitation, ecological requirements, and population level processes such as demographic and environmental stochasticity. Yet, our understanding of species rarity remains limited since few studies have examined how these factors act in concert. This dissertation examines how these mechanisms may interact to influence the distribution and population establishment of plant species in restored xeric glades in the Missouri Ozarks: USA). First, …

Aldehyde Bromination For Stilbenoid Syntheses, Dhanunjay N. Padal Sep 2012

Aldehyde Bromination For Stilbenoid Syntheses, Dhanunjay N. Padal

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will focus on being able to synthesize an alkyne from an aldehyde, forming a dibromoalkene as an intermediate. This alkyne then can be converted to a stilbenoid in the future on reaction with alkyl lithium. Combretastatin A-4 and resveratrol are the stilbenoids, which have biological significance. These compounds have therapeutic value and are extracted from plants or fruits for their production. The chemical synthesis for these compounds from an economic point of view is very important. The Corey-Fuchs reaction was used to synthesize the dibromoalkenes. Literature cites use of triphenylphosphine as a reactant, but triisopropyl phosphite was used …

Vitamin D Deficiency : This Clandestine Endemic Disease Is Veiled No More, Moeness M. Alshishtawy

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Recently, scientists have generated a strong body of evidence providing new information about the preventive effect of vitamin D on a broad range of disorders. This evidence suggests that vitamin D is much more than a nutrient needed for bone health; it is an essential hormone required for regulation of a large number of physiological functions. Sufficient concentration of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is essential for optimising human health. This article reviews the present state-of-the-art knowledge about vitamin D’s status worldwide and refers to recent articles discussing some of the general background of vitamin D, including sources, benefits, deficiencies, and dietary …
