Insights Into Mrnp Biogenesis Provided By New Genetic Interactions Among Export And Transcription Factors, Francisco Estruch, Christine Hodge, Natalia Gómez-Navarro, Lorena Peiró-Chova, Catherine V. Heath, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The various steps of mRNP biogenesis (transcription, processing and export) are interconnected. It has been shown that the transcription machinery plays a pivotal role in mRNP assembly, since several mRNA export factors are recruited during transcription and physically interact with components of the transcription machinery. Although the shuttling DEAD-box protein Dbp5p is concentrated on the cytoplasmic fibrils of the NPC, previous studies demonstrated that it interacts physically and genetically with factors involved in transcription initiation. We investigated the effect of mutations affecting various components of the transcription initiation apparatus on the phenotypes of mRNA export mutant strains. Our results show …

The Impact Of Sexual Self-Esteem On Sexual Risk Detection In College Women, Lauren Lucente Sep 2012

The Impact Of Sexual Self-Esteem On Sexual Risk Detection In College Women, Lauren Lucente

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual assault victimization has been associated with poor risk recognition and low sexual self-esteem (Gidycz, McNamara, & Edwards, 2006; Schwartz & Shipiro, 1997). Evidence suggests that sexual self-esteem may precede risk recognition subsequently impacting victimization (Mayers, Heller, & Heller, 2003; Zeanah & Schwartz, 1996). The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct predictive impact of global and specific components of sexual self-esteem on risk recognition. Participants engaged a laboratory analog to measure risk detection and completed a series of questionnaires to measure sexual self-esteem. Results indicated that global sexual self-esteem is not predictive of risk recognition. In regard …

Widespread And Persistent Invasions Of Terrestrial Habitats Coincident With Larval Feeding Behavior Transitions During Snail-Killing Fly Evolution (Diptera: Sciomyzidae), Eric G. Chapman, Andrey A. Przhiboro, James D. Harwood, Benjamin A. Foote, Walter R. Hoeh Sep 2012

Widespread And Persistent Invasions Of Terrestrial Habitats Coincident With Larval Feeding Behavior Transitions During Snail-Killing Fly Evolution (Diptera: Sciomyzidae), Eric G. Chapman, Andrey A. Przhiboro, James D. Harwood, Benjamin A. Foote, Walter R. Hoeh

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Transitions in habitats and feeding behaviors were fundamental to the diversification of life on Earth. There is ongoing debate regarding the typical directionality of transitions between aquatic and terrestrial habitats and the mechanisms responsible for the preponderance of terrestrial to aquatic transitions. Snail-killing flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) represent an excellent model system to study such transitions because their larvae display a range of feeding behaviors, being predators, parasitoids or saprophages of a variety of mollusks in freshwater, shoreline and dry terrestrial habitats. The remarkable genus Tetanocera (Tetanocerini) occupies five larval feeding groups and all of the habitat types mentioned above. …

Cellular Effects Of Platinum Chemotherapeutics: Alterations By Antidepressants And Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans, Brigitte Engelmann Sep 2012

Cellular Effects Of Platinum Chemotherapeutics: Alterations By Antidepressants And Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans, Brigitte Engelmann

Theses and Dissertations

The work discussed here is divided into two projects. The first project involves the interactions between antidepressants and the platinum based chemotherapeutics while the second project begins to investigate possible implications of a recently discovered uptake mechanism for positively charged platinum drugs. Gaining understanding of the interactions between antidepressants and platinum-based chemotherapeutics is important due to the frequency with which they are prescribed together. Although using a combination regimen of antineoplastics is beneficial to the patient, not all drug interactions are. For instance, many of the serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been shown to decrease the efficacy of tamoxifen. Desipramine, a …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

MUC17 is a type 1 membrane-bound glycoprotein that is mainly expressed in the digestive tract. Recent studies have demonstrated that the aberrant overexpression of MUC17 is correlated with the malignant potential of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs); however, the exact regulatory mechanism of MUC17 expression has yet to be identified. Here, we provide the first report of the MUC17 regulatory mechanism under hypoxia, an essential feature of the tumor microenvironment and a driving force of cancer progression. Our data revealed that MUC17 was significantly induced by hypoxic stimulation through a hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α)-dependent pathway in some pancreatic cancer cells (e.g., …

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2010, Frederick T. Short Sep 2012

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2010, Frederick T. Short

PREP Reports & Publications

The following is a revision of the 2010 eelgrass status report submitted to the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership by Dr. Fred Short, correcting an error in eelgrass percent cover classification discovered by PREP staff during their QA/QC process. Eelgrass in the Great Bay Estuary in 2010 was once again mainly present in the Great Bay itself with limited distribution in Portsmouth Harbor. In 2010, Portsmouth Harbor experienced a 9% loss of eelgrass distribution since 2009, for a loss of 47% of the Harbor’s eelgrass distribution since 1996, an alarming trend. For the third year in a row in the Piscataqua …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Greenhouse Gases Emission From Nitrogen Fertilizer Application In Palm Oil Industry / Norliyana Zin Zawawi, Zin Zawawi Norliyana

Student Works (2010-2019)

With the high current demand for palm oil, the production of this fast-growing industry should have minimal impact on the environment. For the purpose of planning and implementing mitigation, detailed information and data on the production processes are required. Thus, a study was conducted to collate data and information on the inputs used throughout the production processes where the scope of study has been confined to oil palm plantation and the utilization of nitrogen fertilizer. Data was collected and calculated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) procedures, where environmental impacts and hotspots were identified and greenhouse gases emission from plantation was …

“Offsetting” Crisis? - Climate Change Cap-And-Trade Need Not Contribute To Another Financial Meltdown , Victor B, Flatt

Pepperdine Law Review

In 2009, the promise of a comprehensive federal cap and trade bill to address climate change fell apart. At least in part, this was due to the fears that exotic 'carbon' financial instruments might cause more financial crises. As California launches it economy wide carbon trading system, and other regional systems and the even possibly the EPA consider cap and trade, it is important to revisit what, if anything, about carbon denominated financial instruments might lead to financial market problems. The most problematic of the instruments, offsets, can be designed to lessen financial risk from underlying asset failure.

Measurement Of Alcohol Craving, David J. Kavanagh, Dixie J. Statham, Gerald F.X. Feeney, Ross Mc D. Young, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Jason P. Connor

School of Psychology

Despite considerable research activity and application in treatment, the construct of craving remains poorly understood. We propose that cravings and urges are cognitive-emotional events in time, characterised by frequency, duration, intensity and salience. Commonly used measures of alcohol craving are reviewed, and their strengths and weaknesses identified. Most measures confound craving with behaviors, or with separable cognitive phenomena such as expectancies, intentions, or perceived behavioral control. These confounds have limited our advances in understanding the determinants and consequences of craving. Based on the criteria applied in this review, among the better performing multi-item measures are the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale …

Parental Role In Encouraging Sport Participation In Females, Jaime L. Berthold Sep 2012

Parental Role In Encouraging Sport Participation In Females, Jaime L. Berthold

Sport Management Undergraduate

Although still askew compared to male rates, female participation rates in sports have gone up since the introduction of Title IX in 1972. A plethora of research has been done to identify the various factors as to why females play sport, parental influence being a common social aspect. Research is lacking, however, in exploring the types of parental influence, specifically based on the gender of the parent. By surveying students at St. John Fisher College, this study examines the support/modeling roles commonly associated with the gender of the parent in regards to influencing their children to participate in sport. Results …

Increasing Pt Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity And Durability With A Carbon-Doped Tio 2 Nanocoating Catalyst Support, Kan Huang, Kotaro Sasaki, Radoslav R. Adzic, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a conductive TiO2 nanocoating on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a Pt electrocatalyst support that shows a significant enhancement in Pt catalyst activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction. by using CNTs as the substrate for TiO2 nanocoating, the nanoscale morphology of the oxide was retained during heat treatment. after carbon doping of the TiO2 nanocoating, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests a shift in the binding energy of Ti 2p, implying a suboxide formation. the X-ray absorption near-edge structure showed the mid-edge and post-edge up to 5010 eV, which are attributed to a 1s → 4p transition and promotion …

Risk Factor Detection As A Metric Of Starhs Performance For Hiv Incidence Surveillance Among Female Sex Workers In Kigali, Rwanda, Sarah L. Braunstein, Janneke H. Van De Wijgert, Joseph Vyankandondera, Evelyn Kestelyn, Justin Ntirushwa, Denis Nash Sep 2012

Risk Factor Detection As A Metric Of Starhs Performance For Hiv Incidence Surveillance Among Female Sex Workers In Kigali, Rwanda, Sarah L. Braunstein, Janneke H. Van De Wijgert, Joseph Vyankandondera, Evelyn Kestelyn, Justin Ntirushwa, Denis Nash

Publications and Research

Background:
The epidemiologic utility of STARHS hinges not only on producing accurate estimates of HIV incidence, but also on identifying risk factors for recent HIV infection.

Methods:
As part of an HIV seroincidence study, 800 Rwandan female sex workers (FSW) were HIV tested, with those testing positive further tested by BED-CEIA (BED) and AxSYM Avidity Index (Ax-AI) assays. A sample of HIV-negative (N=397) FSW were followed prospectively for HIV seroconversion. We compared estimates of risk factors for: 1) prevalent HIV infection; 2) recently acquired HIV infection (RI) based on three different STARHS classifications (BED alone, Ax-AI alone, BED/Ax-AI combined); and …

Virtual And Traditional Slides For Teaching Cellular Morphology To Medical Laboratory Science Undergraduates: A Comparative Study Of Performance Outcomes, Retention, And Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Brooke L. Solberg

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of massive retirement and educational program expense and closure, the field of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is facing a critical workforce shortage. Combatting this issue by increasing undergraduate class size is a difficult proposition due to the intense psychomotor curricular requirements of MLS programs. Technological advances in the realm of virtual microscopy, however, provide an opportunity to reach more students by delivering psychomotor components in less restrictive formats. The purpose of this study was to analyze pedagogical comparability of virtual slides and traditional slides regarding immediate and delayed performance, self-efficacy perceptions, student opinion, and faculty observations. Specifically, …

Mapping Nuclear Fallout Using The Weather Research & Forecasting (Wrf) Model, Joseph C. Schofield Sep 2012

Mapping Nuclear Fallout Using The Weather Research & Forecasting (Wrf) Model, Joseph C. Schofield

Theses and Dissertations

There are many models that attempt to predict transport & dispersion (T&D) of particulate matter in the sensible atmosphere. The majority of these existing models are unable to incorporate atmospheric processes such wet deposition through scavenging and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation. To this end, the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model known as the Weather Research & Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) Model is studied to determine its suitability as a potential tool for predicting particulate T&D following an atmospheric nuclear detonation. This is done by modifying relevant modules, originally designed to predict the settling of volcanic ash, such that a …
