Role Of Propionates In Substrate Binding To Heme Oxygenase From Neisseria Meningitidis: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study, Dungeng Peng, Li Hua Ma, Kevin M. Smith, Xuhong Zhang, Michihiko Sato, Gerd N. La Mar Sep 2012

Role Of Propionates In Substrate Binding To Heme Oxygenase From Neisseria Meningitidis: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study, Dungeng Peng, Li Hua Ma, Kevin M. Smith, Xuhong Zhang, Michihiko Sato, Gerd N. La Mar

Faculty Publications

Heme oxygenase (HO) cleaves hemin into biliverdin, iron, and CO. For mammalian HOs, both native hemin propionates are required for substrate binding and activity. The HO from the pathogenic bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (NmHO) possesses a crystallographically undetected C-terminal fragment that by solution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is found to fold and interact with the active site. One of the substrate propionates has been proposed to form a salt bridge to the C-terminus rather than to the conventional buried cationic side chain in other HOs. Moreover, the C-terminal dipeptide Arg208His209 cleaves spontaneously over ∼24 h at a rate dependent on …

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman Sep 2012

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman

Dartmouth Scholarship

To elucidate the cortical control of handwriting, we examined time-dependent statistical and correlational properties of simultaneously recorded 64-channel electroencephalograms (EEGs) and electromyograms (EMGs) of intrinsic hand muscles. We introduced a statistical method, which offered advantages compared to conventional coherence methods. In contrast to coherence methods, which operate in the frequency domain, our method enabled us to study the functional association between different neural regions in the time domain. In our experiments, subjects performed about 400 stereotypical trials during which they wrote a single character. These trials provided time-dependent EMG and EEG data capturing different handwriting epochs. The set of trials …

Structural Insight Into The Mechanism Of Oxygen Activation And Substrate Selectivity Of Flavin-Dependent N-Hydroxylating Monooxygenases, Stefano Franceschini, Michael Fedkenheuer, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Howard H. Robinson, Pablo Sobrado, Andrea Mattevi

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

SidA from the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus catalyzes the generation of N5-hydroxyornithine in the biosynthesis of siderophores, a reaction essential for virulence. The crystal structures of SidA in complex with ornithine and lysine reveal the geometry of the interactions among flavin, NADP+, and the substrate amine group that underlie the hydroxylation reaction. The structural elucidation of the enzyme in complex with arginine provides insight into the role of electrostatics and hydrogen bonding in the mechanism of oxygen activation in this family of enzymes. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague Sep 2012

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Over the last decade, Montana's fastest growing basins have experienced a surge of reliance on a certain “permit-exempt well loophole,” which enables small ground water diversions to avoid having to go through the regulatory process that determines whether the proposed use would adversely impact senior water users and ground water supply. This loophole has generated significant conflict with senior right owners in areas where exempt wells have provided water for large-scale residential developments. As a partial solution, this article examines ground water mitigation exchanges designed to address similar issues in Washington and presents the 63rd Montana Legislature with recommendations for …

Use Of Exempt Wells As Natural Underground Storage And Recovery Systems, David G. Embleton Sep 2012

Use Of Exempt Wells As Natural Underground Storage And Recovery Systems, David G. Embleton

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The water management practice of storing water underground for use during dry periods is a very effective technique that has been practiced for a long time. Another water management practice that has been around for a long time is collection of rainwater and storage of rainwater aboce ground. There have been significant advances more recently in our understanding of aquifer geology and technologies used for rainwater harvesting. This article combines our advance in knowledge of storing and recovery water from wells and new rainwater harvesting practices to recharge a low yielding exempt well with treated rainwater. The studies presented in …

Empirical Evaluation Of Scoring Functions For Bayesian Network Model Selection, Zhifa Liu, Brandon Malone, Changhe Yuan Sep 2012

Empirical Evaluation Of Scoring Functions For Bayesian Network Model Selection, Zhifa Liu, Brandon Malone, Changhe Yuan

Publications and Research

In this work, we empirically evaluate the capability of various scoring functions of Bayesian networks for recovering true underlying structures. Similar investigations have been carried out before, but they typically relied on approximate learning algorithms to learn the network structures. The suboptimal structures found by the approximation methods have unknown quality and may affect the reliability of their conclusions. Our study uses an optimal algorithm to learn Bayesian network structures from datasets generated from a set of gold standard Bayesian networks. Because all optimal algorithms always learn equivalent networks, this ensures that only the choice of scoring function affects the …

Arabidopsis Bhlh100 And Bhlh101 Control Iron Homeostasis Via A Fit-Independent Pathway, Alicia B. Sivitz, Victor Hermand, Catherine Curie, Grégory Vert Sep 2012

Arabidopsis Bhlh100 And Bhlh101 Control Iron Homeostasis Via A Fit-Independent Pathway, Alicia B. Sivitz, Victor Hermand, Catherine Curie, Grégory Vert

Dartmouth Scholarship

Iron deficiency induces a complex set of responses in plants, including developmental and physiological changes, to increase iron uptake from soil. In Arabidopsis, many transporters involved in the absorption and distribution of iron have been identified over the past decade. However, little is known about the signaling pathways and networks driving the various responses to low iron. Only the basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factor FIT has been shown to control the expression of the root iron uptake machinery genes FRO2 and IRT1. Here, we characterize the biological role of two other iron-regulated transcription factors, bHLH100 and bHLH101, in iron homeostasis. …

The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov Sep 2012

The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Courses that focus on local flora and fauna are no longer included in biology curricula; therefore most K-12 teachers lack the expertise to teach their students about local biodiversity. When teachers are unable to recognize the plants and animals in their own surroundings, threats to the environment and biodiversity will inevitably remain abstractions to students. In the summer of 2011, a five-day plant and insect biodiversity workshop engaging thirteen pre-service and in-service urban public school teachers and five undergraduate biology teaching assistants was held at a forest field station outside of New York City. The goals were to develop an …

Pedal Power: Lawrence University Wins National Bike Challenge, Lawrence University

Press Releases

Only a road trip to a local nature center to pick up some duckweed for a biology class that required the use of her car prevented assistant laboratory supervisor JoAnn Stamm from biking to work every day this summer.

Stamm’s dedication helped Lawrence University edge Ripon College to finish first among 111 colleges and universities nationally in the small-colleges division (less than 3,000 students) in the recently completed first National Bike Challenge.

Led by Stamm’s team-high 1,108 miles, Lawrence’s 27 faculty and staff riders logged 6,270 miles during the challenge that ran from May 1 to August 31. One point …
