Iqgap Family Members In Yeast, Dictyostelium, And Mammalian Cells, Katie Shannon
Iqgap Family Members In Yeast, Dictyostelium, And Mammalian Cells, Katie Shannon
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
IQGAPs are a family of scaffolding proteins with multiple domains, named for the IQ motifs and GTPase activating protein (GAP) related domains. Despite their GAP homology, IQGAP proteins act as effectors for GTP-bound GTPases of the Ras superfamily and do not stimulate GTP hydrolysis. IQGAPs are found in eukaryotic cells from yeast to human, and localize to actin-containing structures such as lamellipodia, membrane ruffles, cell-cell adhesions, phagocytic cups, and the actomyosin ring formed during cytokinesis. Mammalian IQGAPs also act as scaffolds for signaling pathways. IQGAPs perform their myriad functions through association with a large number of proteins including filamentous actin …

In Silico Analysis Reveals The Role Of Horizontally Transferred Genes (Hgts) In Shaping The Pathogenicity Of Xanthomonas, Shrabanti Kundu, Asim Bothra, Louis S. Tisa, Arnab Sen
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
The role of Xanthomonas spp. as phytopathogen has been well recognized in diseases of important crops like rice, canola, tomato, citrus, etc. The genomes of a number of Xanthomonas strains are also fully sequenced and they are made available in various data bases. In the present study, in silico analysis of six Xanthomonas genomes was carried out. Synonymous codon usage pattern study in these genomes revealed that pathogenicity related (PR)-horizontally transferred genes (HGTs) were, in general, expressed lowly and were less biased in comparison with average protein coding genes and ribosomal protein genes. Moreover, the correspondence analysis showed that the …

Evolving Expert Agent Parameters For Capture The Flag Agent In Xpilot, Gary Parker, Sarah Penrose
Evolving Expert Agent Parameters For Capture The Flag Agent In Xpilot, Gary Parker, Sarah Penrose
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Xpilot is an open source, 2d space combat game. Xpilot-AI allows a programmer to write scripts that control an agent playing a game of Xpilot. It provides a reasonable environment for testing learning systems for autonomous agents, both video game agents and robots. In previous work, a wide range of techniques have been used to develop controllers that are focused on the combat skills for an Xpilot agent. In this research, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was used to evolve the parameters for an expert agent solving the more challenging problem of capture the flag.

Biological Rights: How Much Of Our Bodies Do We Really Own?, August H. Nagro '15
2012 Fall Semester
Genes and cellular lines are two of the most patented objects in the natural world. Genes, the building blocks of the human body, contain approximately 30,000 different sequences of genetic code, twenty percent of which is patented (Gene Patenting). Multi-billion companies like Microbiological Associates hold hundreds of cellular patents derived from human bodies (Skloot 101). Scientists, drug and research companies, and even genetic and cellular donors all want sole ownership over genes and cell lines that make them money, and will viciously fight in court when they believe their rights have been infringed. Sole ownership of cells and …
The Tension Between Transparency And Public Appeasement In The Formulation Of Wildfire Management Strategies And The Use Of Wildfire As A Restoration Tool, Rachael E. Salcido
The Tension Between Transparency And Public Appeasement In The Formulation Of Wildfire Management Strategies And The Use Of Wildfire As A Restoration Tool, Rachael E. Salcido
Texas Wesleyan Journal of Real Property Law
In this essay I explore how the Healthy Forests Restoration Act 2003 ("HFRA") and development of a National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy pursuant to the Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement Act 2009 ("FLAME") purchased peace with WUI landowners. These laws emphasized "fire-adapted communities" and potentially signaled acceptance of (or normalizing) development in areas of high fire danger. By emphasizing risk reduction narrowly, we may have missed an opportunity to advance broader restoration objectives connected to bringing fire back to fire-adapted landscapes.

Designing Autonomous Robot Missions With Performance Guarantees, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald Arkin, Prem Nirmal, Shu Jiang
Faculty Publications
This paper describes the need and methods required to construct an integrated software verification and mission specification system for use in robotic missions intended for counter-weapons of mass destruction (c-WMD) operations, as part of a 3-year effort for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The overall system architecture is described. The principal tool for verification is a process algebra, PARS, based on port automata theory. PARS is introduced, emphasizing its ability to represent probabilistic programs and uncertain and dynamic environments, followed by the analysis of mission properties for an example robotic mission.

On Nietzsche’S Judgment Of Style And Hume’S Quixotic Taste: On The Science Of Aesthetics And ‘Playing’ The Satyr, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
This essay reviews Nietzsche’s discussion of scholarly judgments of style beginning with his own inaugural lecture at Basel together with David Hume’s stylistic reflections in Hume's “On the Standard of Taste.” This casts light both on the context and the substance of Nietzsche’s own scholarly concern with the question of style and taste in terms of what Nietzsche called the “science of aesthetics” and consequently of scholarly judgment in both classics (or classical philology, here including archaeology and historiography) and philosophy. I also include a brief discussion of Nietzsche’s phenomenological performance practice of dance or playing the “satyr.”

UCHC Articles - Research
The endosomal Toll-like receptors (TLRs) TLR3, TLR7, TLR8 and TLR9 are important in sensing foreign nucleic acids encountered by phagocytes. Because TLR8 was initially thought to be non-functional in mice, less is known about TLR8 than the genetically and functionally related TLR7. Originally associated with the recognition of single-stranded RNA of viral origin, there is now evidence that human TLR8 is also able to sense bacterial RNA released within phagosomal vacuoles, inducing the production of both nuclear factor (NF)-κB-dependent cytokines and type I interferons (IFNs), such as IFN-β. The functions of TLR8 extend beyond the recognition of foreign pathogens and …

Dissertations
This study explores the effectiveness of the School Completion Programme (SCP) in helping to achieve the three goals of the National Children’s Strategy (2000-2010) which are that children:
• Will have a voice in matters which affect them
• Their lives will be better understood
• They will receive quality supports and services to promote all aspects of their development
The research involved interviewing children who attend the schools involved in the Programme and have participated in the supports at some stage in their educational lives. The findings provided me with a valuable insight into how these children experience their …

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo
Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications
Most of my art students experience a very down to earth epistemological relationship to the world. There is what there is. Middle America is a land of dualisms: matter and spirit, mind and body, good and evil. In this uncluttered black and white world, post-structural theory seemingly has little to offer but a range of unnecessary and unattractive grays. This presentation describes how I overcome my students’ resistance to intellectualizing perception and art making. I use a physiological perspective that grounds students’ investigation of art and meaning in an investigation of themselves, their bodies, their perceptual responses, emotional reactions and …

Including Social Service Clients In The Organizational Decision Making Process, Josie De Hartog
Including Social Service Clients In The Organizational Decision Making Process, Josie De Hartog
Professional Projects
Empowerment of clients is a goal of many social service organizations and yet a concept that is hard to define and often complicated to implement. This professional project looks at the importance and practice of empowering parents in a teenage pregnancy prevention program through a case study. A survey of parents supported the idea of empowering practices leading to parents becoming partners with the organization in the education of the community. In a qualitative study, this researcher offers the practice of taking empowerment a step further in asking participants of the program to take part in the decision of what …
