School As Community Center: Redefining The Relationship Between The Community And The School In Minsk, Belarus, Kate Talkachova Oct 2012

School As Community Center: Redefining The Relationship Between The Community And The School In Minsk, Belarus, Kate Talkachova

Architecture Thesis Prep

"A society that values education should place emphasis on the facilities and incorporate in them the values and progress, not blindly stick to the traditional. For a country fighting to regain its identity, it is important that the divisions between the neighborhoods are blurred and a sense of a whole is created. With the school as community center, education remains the central focus, as well as provides the necessary link to the surrounding neighborhoods, becoming more than just a physical center, but an activity center as well."

Rurality Within The City: A Study Of The Interrelationship Between Urban And Rural Areas, Suho Lee

Architecture Thesis Prep

"My project proposal is to produce a new type of contemporary self-sufficient architectural place to deal not only with the economic and education issues that the rurals are lacking in but also with environmental and unemployment issues that the big cities are lacking in. While it is important to retain the countryside feel in the current suburbs, some issues to improve on for the new city area are to cater towards a younger generation’s needs. As opposed to those who are retired and are looking for a quiet place to settle down for the rest of their life in the …

Epidemiology Of Tuberculosis In Ohio, Usha Bala Vayuvegula Oct 2012

Epidemiology Of Tuberculosis In Ohio, Usha Bala Vayuvegula

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global infectious disease often associated with HIV. Study of the distribution and epidemiologic trends may help target prevention and control measures towards high risk areas and groups.

Objective: To determine TB trends in four counties in Ohio, i.e. Franklin, Cuyahoga, Hamilton and Montgomery counties, and to explore differences in distribution of cases across gender, age groups and races.

Methods: TB surveillance data was collected from the Ohio Department of Health website for 12 years (1999-2011). Mean TB rates across gender were compared using the two sample t-test. One way ANOVA was used to compare means …

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe and the most prevalent form of muscular dystrophy, characterized by rapid progression of muscle degeneration. Antisense-mediated exon skipping is currently one of the most promising therapeutic options for DMD. However, unmodified antisense oligos such as morpholinos require frequent (weekly or bi-weekly) injections. Recently, new generation morpholinos such as vivo-morpholinos are reported to lead to extensive and prolonged dystrophin expression in the dystrophic mdx mouse, an animal model of DMD. The vivo-morpholino contains a cell-penetrating moiety, octa-guanidine dendrimer. Here, we sought to test the efficacy of multiple exon skipping of exons 6–8 with vivo-morpholinos …

Biblical Kingship: Model For Contemporary Business Leaders., Michael E. Cafferky Oct 2012

Biblical Kingship: Model For Contemporary Business Leaders., Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

A careful study of the biblical references to kingship reveals that accumulation of personal wealth, building military power which could be use to oppress citizens, and convoluted foreign policy were unacceptable. This speaks to our contemporary condition. Furthermore, kings were responsible to, and chosen from, the community, and expected to set a high moral example.

Developmental Time, Longevity, And Lifetime Fertility Of Three Introduced Parasitoids Of The Mealybug Paracoccus Marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Catharine M. Mannion, Nancy D. Epsky

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Developmental time, longevity, and lifetime fertility of three previously introduced parasitoids (Acerophagus papayae Noyes and Schauff, Anagyrus loecki Noyes and Menezes, and Pseudleptomastix mexicana Noyes and Schauff) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) of the mealybug Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) were studied in the laboratory to understand the outcome of their recovery in field studies conducted in the United States. The developmental time of both male and female A. papayae and A. loecki was shorter than the developmental time of male and female P. mexicana. Male parasitoids of all three species had a shorter developmental time than …

Geography

Landscape connectivity, the extent to which a landscape facilitates the movements of organisms and their genes, faces critical threats from both fragmentation and habitat loss. Many conservation efforts focus on protecting and enhancing connectivity to offset the impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation on biodiversity conservation, and to increase the resilience of reserve networks to potential threats associated with climate change. Loss of connectivity can reduce the size and quality of available habitat, impede and disrupt movement (including dispersal) to new habitats, and affect seasonal migration patterns. These changes can lead, in turn, to detrimental effects for populations and species, …

Family Structure, Work Patterns And Time Allocations: Potential Mechanisms Of Food Insecurity Among Children, Kelly Balistreri Oct 2012

Family Structure, Work Patterns And Time Allocations: Potential Mechanisms Of Food Insecurity Among Children, Kelly Balistreri

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Over 469 thousand households in the U.S. experienced very low food security among children, a severe condition characterized by reductions in food intake due to an inability to afford enough food. But food insecurity is not simply about economic resources. There exists a paradox in which some poor households with children are food secure while some non-poor households with children are food insecure. This study moves beyond a singular focus on income and considers how the family context may protect or generate risk of food insecurity for children. The goals of the proposed project were to: 1) to provide a …

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews Oct 2012

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews

SNS Master's Theses

Habitat composition and complexity can play an important role in structuring populations of marine organisms. However, the interactions between the physical and biological landscape and their combined effect on marine population dynamics are not well understood. In this study, I explored the role of habitat complexity (three-dimensional habitat structure) on habitat composition (abundance and distribution of habitat types) and their combined role in structuring genetic variation in populations of the black surfperch Embiotoca jacksoni, within Monterey Bay, California. Black surfperch have no pelagic larval stage, limited adult dispersal, and associate strongly with benthic habitat making them an excellent model system …
