Genome Mapping And Molecular Markers For Ascochyta Blight Resistance In Pea (Pisum Sativum L.), Andre Luis Rodrigues Miranda
Genome Mapping And Molecular Markers For Ascochyta Blight Resistance In Pea (Pisum Sativum L.), Andre Luis Rodrigues Miranda
Plant Sciences
Ascochyta blight is the most common disease of economic importance in peas (Pisum sativum L.) in North Dakota. Selection based on molecular markers would greatly facilitate identification of resistant varieties. A mapping population comprised of 394 F7-derived recombinant inbred line (RILs) and derived from the cross `Lifter'/'Radley' was developed to study resistance to Ascochyta blight. A genetic map was developed based on 179 loci including SSR, RAPD, and CAPS markers, distributed on seven linkage groups. Phenotyping for reaction to Ascochyta blight was carried out under greenhouse and field conditions. Five replicate plants were scored using a 0 to 5 scale, …
Radiation Hybrid Fine Mapping Of Two Fertility-Related Genes: Marking The Path To Wheat Hybrids, Filippo Maria Bassi
Radiation Hybrid Fine Mapping Of Two Fertility-Related Genes: Marking The Path To Wheat Hybrids, Filippo Maria Bassi
Plant Sciences
Over one billion people, more than 1/9th of the global population, are undernourished. Feeding the ever increasing population has to be the most important goal of plant sciences. Since cultivated areas are not likely to increase, I will need to produce more with what is available. This can be summarized in one word: yield. Unfortunately, wheat’s yield is expected to increase only 1.13% by 2019, a prediction that if converted into reality will likely indicate that I failed to cope with the world demographic increase. A new strategy to revolutionize wheat production is required, and some believe that this change …

Early-Season Weed Control In Direct-Seeded Onion (Allium Cepa L.), James Ryan Loken
Early-Season Weed Control In Direct-Seeded Onion (Allium Cepa L.), James Ryan Loken
Plant Sciences
Onion is a poor competitor with early-season broadleaf weeds. In addition, there are no current herbicide labels that allow POST application prior to the onion two-leaf stage in ND and PRE herbicide options provide inconsistent results. Bromoxynil and oxyfluorfen at reduced rates plus adjuvants were evaluated in the greenhouse for common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed control and crop safety when applied to onion prior to the two-leaf stage. Bromoxynil and oxyfluorfen plus methylated seed oil (MSO) or petroleum oil concentrate (POC) had the greatest onion safety compared to other tested adjuvants and provided acceptable weed control 12 d after three …
Evaluation Of Pea Protein And Modified Pea Protein As Egg Replacers, Hieu Duy Hoang
Evaluation Of Pea Protein And Modified Pea Protein As Egg Replacers, Hieu Duy Hoang
Plant Sciences
Native yellow pea (Pisum sativum) protein isolates (PPIs) showed good foaming and emulsifying properties but a poor gelling characteristic. However, this can be corrected by Transglutaminase (TGase) treatment. PPIs were obtained using alkaline extraction method in which extracting pH, precipitating pH, flour–to–water ratio, and extraction time were optimized to obtain maximum yields and least change in protein functionalities. Extraction pH of 10.0, precipitating pH of 4.3, flour–to–water ratio of 1:6, and 30 minute extraction time were found to be optimum values for pea protein extraction. SDS–PAGE gels showed that the PPI had a very similar protein molecular weight profile as …
Inheritance Of Partial Resistance To White Mold In Field Pea (Pisum Sativum L.), Behzod Tashtemirov
Inheritance Of Partial Resistance To White Mold In Field Pea (Pisum Sativum L.), Behzod Tashtemirov
Plant Sciences
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes white mold and severe yield losses of pea. 484 accessions from the Pisum core collection were screened for resistance using a mini-agar plug technique. 49, 41, and 13 accessions were identified with partial resistance based on lesion expansion inhibition (LEI), nodal transmission inhibition (NTI), and both traits combined, respectively. A genetic linkage map based on F2 DNA from the cross, Lifter/PI240515, was developed with 78 markers on 9 linkage groups (LG) spanning 734 cM. Two quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified based on phenotypic data from F2:3 and F3:4 families. A single QTL on LGIII explained 34.1% …
Vapor-Liquid Phase Equilibria Using Monte Carlo Wang-Landau Simulations, Tsvetan Aleksandrov
Vapor-Liquid Phase Equilibria Using Monte Carlo Wang-Landau Simulations, Tsvetan Aleksandrov
Theses and Dissertations
The experimental determination of the critical point of metals is inherently connected with difficulties of measuring large temperatures and pressures. On the other hand, that of straight alkane chains larger than ten carbon atoms and branched chains larger than eight atoms is burdensome due to decomposition of the molecules while in the vapor phase. Therefore molecular simulations stand as an appropriate alternative for determining the critical point and phase coexistence properties of these fluids. Most simulation methods that are apt for this task rely on particles insertion and deletion moves that can significantly complicate the simulation, since high density in …
Preventing Sex-Offender Recidivism Through Therapeutic Jurisprudence Approaches And Specialized Community Integration, Heather Cucolo, Michael L. Perlin
Preventing Sex-Offender Recidivism Through Therapeutic Jurisprudence Approaches And Specialized Community Integration, Heather Cucolo, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
The public’s panic about the fear of recidivism if adjudicated sex offenders are ever to be released to the community has not subsided, despite the growing amount of information and statistically-reliable data signifying a generally low risk of re-offense. The established case law upholding sex offender civil commitment and containment statutes has rejected challenges of unconstitutionality, and continues to be dominated by punitive undertones. We have come to learn that the tools used to assess offenders for risk and civil commitment are often inaccurate and that meaningful treatment for this population is often unavailable and ineffective. Yet, society continues to …

Background: Obesity and overweight in Africa have been attributed to demogra- phic and nutritional changes that have resulted from urbanization and sedentary lifestyles and increased caloric intake without much physical activities. This has put populations at an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, Diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis, dyslipidemia, and cancer. The objective of this study was to deter- mine the prevalence and associated factors for combined overweight and obesity among residents of a mining town, Kitwe, in Zambia.
Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted using a modified WHO glo- bal Non Communicable Diseases Surveillance Initiative STEPs 1 and 2 method of …
Reimagining Criminal Prosecution: Toward A Color-Conscious Professional Ethic For Prosecutors, Justin Murray
Reimagining Criminal Prosecution: Toward A Color-Conscious Professional Ethic For Prosecutors, Justin Murray
Articles & Chapters
Prosecutors, like mostAmericans, view the criminal-justice system asfundamentally race neutral. They are aware that blacks are stopped, searched, arrested, and locked up in numbers that are vastly out of proportion to their fraction of the overall population. Yet, they generally assume that this outcome is justified because it reflects the sad reality that blacks commit a disproportionate share of crime in America. They are unable to detect the ways in which their own discretionary choices-and those of other actors in the criminal-justice system, such as legislators, police officers, and jurors-contribute to the staggering and disproportionate incarceration of black Americans. In …
"Near-By Nature": A Logical Framework For Building Integrated Agriculture., William Plyler
"Near-By Nature": A Logical Framework For Building Integrated Agriculture., William Plyler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Building Integrated Agriculture (BIA) aims to reduce the environmental footprint of food production and to improve the human condition. BIA places food producing plants into the everyday working/living environment. This study explored the intersection of the diverse BIA requirements (human, plant, and building) as established by the relevant literature from various disciplines. Kaplan (1992), and Ulrich (1984; 1986; 1992) established the restorative physiological and psychological effects of plants in non-natural settings. Kaplan deemed these settings “Near-by Nature.†In building interiors, “Near-by Nature†is achieved through interiorscaping, a design practice that incorporates plant, building and occupant requirements. This study specifically investigated …

Sports-Related Traumatic Brain Injury: An Investigation Of College Student-Athletes' Perceptions Of Communicative Facework And Communicative Strategies For Managing Uncertainty., Sydney M. Staggers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI; also referenced as “concussionâ€) is recognized as a major public health issue in the United States with approximately 1.7 million individuals sustaining a TBI annually (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012c). There is a greater propensity for concussions in athletic environments (Powell, 2001). Based on both reported and non-reported accounts, it is estimated that anywhere from 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related (across all sports and recreational activities) concussions occur each year in the United States (Hayes, 2007). As a result, this dissertation, which entailed two studies, examined college student-athletes’ perceptions of others’ (i.e., coach, …

Black Women’S Perceptions Of The Relationship Among Nepotism, Cronyism Job Satisfaction, And Job-Focused Self-Efficacy, Johnson Lavoria Chandler
Doctoral Dissertations
Corporate America struggles with inclusion of certain groups such as Black women. Although Black women have met or surpassed their Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American female counterparts and their Black male counterparts in education, and sit on boards of Fortune 500 companies, too many Black women are stymied in attempts for advancement as a result of nepotism and cronyism. Oftentimes, Black women are left with feelings of incompetence and believing they are undervalued in the workplace.
This study examined Black women's perceptions of nepotism and cronyism in the workplace. Further, the study was conducted to establish to what extent …

The Separate And Collective Effects Of Personalization, Personification, And Gender On Learning With Multimedia Chemistry Instructional Materials, Shannon James Halkyard
Doctoral Dissertations
Chemistry is a difficult subject to learn and teach for students in general. Additionally, female students are under-represented in chemistry and the physical sciences. Within chemistry, atomic and electronic structure is a key concept and several recommendations in the literature describe how this topic can be taught better.
These recommendations can be employed in multimedia instructional materials designed following principles understood through the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. Additionally, these materials can expand the known use of principles like personalization (addressing the learner as "you") and test prospective design principles like personification (referring to abstract objects like atoms as "she" …
Investigation Of The Misconceptions Related To The Concepts Of Equivalence And Literal Symbols Held By Underprepared Community College Students, Terrence Joseph Maguire
Investigation Of The Misconceptions Related To The Concepts Of Equivalence And Literal Symbols Held By Underprepared Community College Students, Terrence Joseph Maguire
Doctoral Dissertations
Many students struggle to learn mathematics in K-8 grades. Research has shown that lower grade students often misconceive equivalence as an operation rather than a relation, and that students also form various misconceptions of literal symbols. Many students arrive at college seriously underprepared in mathematics, but there is scant research on the difficulties and misconceptions of these college students. The purpose of this research was to learn if underprepared community college students harbor misconceptions of equivalence and of literal symbols similar to K-8 students.
For this study, 191 underprepared college students were surveyed for misconceptions by a questionnaire of 43 …

A Participatory Action Research Study With Bi-Ethnic Children In South Korea On Bi-Ethnic Identity Development, Jeong Min Lee
A Participatory Action Research Study With Bi-Ethnic Children In South Korea On Bi-Ethnic Identity Development, Jeong Min Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore how bi-ethnic children in South Korea understand their identity using a participatory action research (PAR) method. The number of bi-ethnic/multicultural families and children is increasing in South Korea, matched with a rising xenophobia towards these groups. Thus, the need for research that captured the inner thoughts and feelings of children, through their own voices, seems of paramount importance for a more secure and authentic identity development. The findings from this research provided evidence through their own storybooks that bi-ethnic Korean children had individual identity experiences in different contexts through diverse development processes. …

Supporting Teachers As Transformative Intellectuals: Participatory Action Research In Human Rights Education, Page Hersey
Doctoral Dissertations
Human rights education (HRE) holds the potential for educators to begin an honest dialogue with students and to connect local issues with international struggles for human rights. However, HRE and other teaching approaches that build understanding of systems of power and oppression that lead to human rights violations are not widely embraced in U.S. schools. In this participatory action research (PAR) study, a group of five educators in the San Francisco Bay Area examined the development and implementation of HRE and social justice education.
Broad research questions guided the group process, asking how educators engaged with youth about human rights …

Strange Bedfellows: The Convergence Of Sovereignty-Limiting Doctrines In Counterterrorist And Human Rights Discourse, Rosa Brooks
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
It is hard to imagine two groups with less in common than national security hawks and human rights activists. They represent different cultures with different views on the use of force, the role of rights, and the constraining power of international law. Yet despite their differences, the two groups seem to be converging on an understanding of state sovereignty as limited and subject to de facto waiver—an understanding that appears to legitimize military interventions even in the absence of state consent and Security Council authorization.
This convergence is reached via different routes in each community: for the national security community, …

Confucian Virtue Jurisprudence, Linghao Wang, Lawrence B. Solum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Virtue jurisprudence is an approach to legal theory that develops the implications of virtue ethics and virtue politics for the law. Recent work on virtue jurisprudence has emphasized a NeoAristotelian approach. This essay develops a virtue jurisprudence in the Confucian tradition. The title of this essay, “Confucian Virtue Jurisprudence,” reflects the central aim of our work, to build a contemporary theory of law that is both virtue-centered and that provides a contemporary reconstruction of the central ideas of the early Confucian intellectual tradition.
This essay provides a sketch of our contemporary version of Confucian virtue jurisprudence, including a view of …
