The authors come from a variety of disciplines, including conservation biology, English, law, and economics, and offer critical assessments of Silent Spring and its legacy. Harvard Forest LTER (HFR) is a two decade-strong, integrated research and educational program investigating responses of forest dynamics to natural and human disturbances and environmental changes over broad spatial and temporal scales. HFR engages >30 researchers, >200 graduate and undergraduate students, and dozens of institutions in research into fundamental and applied ecological questions of national and international relevance. Through LTER I–IV, HFR has added historical perspectives, expanded its scope to the New England region, integrated social, biological, and physical sciences, and developed education and outreach programs for K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students, along with managers, decision-makers, and media professionals.

Research indicates that individuals who perpetuate abuse may also have a history of experiencing abuse (Ford & Linney, 1995; Worling, 1995). Yet, not all abused children will engage in offending behavior (Becker & Hunter, 1997). This study investigated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), caregiver instability, and low social support, and how these factors relate to offending behavior. Participants were 32 juveniles with sexual offenses (SO), 40 juveniles with violent nonsexual offenses (VO), and 18 juveniles with nonsexual nonviolent offenses (NSVO) detained at the West Virginia Home for Youth in Salem, WV. Traumatic brain injury (TBI; also referenced as “concussion”) is recognized as a major public health issue in the United States with approximately 1.7 million individuals sustaining a TBI annually (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012c). There is a greater propensity for concussions in athletic environments (Powell, 2001). Based on both reported and non-reported accounts, it is estimated that anywhere from 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related (across all sports and recreational activities) concussions occur each year in the United States (Hayes, 2007). Typical healthy walking displays greater variability in the mediolateral direction compared to the anteroposterior direction. This greater variability is thought to represent increased uncertainty in movement. As a result, it has been postulated that the mediolateral direction of gait requires more active control by the central nervous system while the anteroposterior direction is controlled through passive actions. However, this theory has only been tested on gait where progression occurs in the anteroposterior direction. The purpose of this study was to examine the external work performed by individuals wearing a rocker bottom shoe compared to a standard shoe. It was hypothesized that individuals wearing a rocker bottom shoe would have changes in the amount of work over the course of contact with the ground. External work on the body’s centre of mass (BCOM) was calculated for individuals in both conditions. Comparisons for external work were done for positive and negative work for the entire stance phase as well as the initial double support, single support and terminal double support periods. Three main components structure the Female Athlete Triad which are, disordered eating, amenorrhea, and low bone mineral density. This could be a dilemma for athletes because the elements of the triad may contribute to major health issues in the future. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of risk factors associated with the Female Athlete Triad among Eastern Illinois University female cross country runners. Literature on LGBT politics and rights has been limited. at best. Little information exists as to how coalitions form and build on successes and failures. Seeking to expand the body of research. this study examined the interest group coalitions active on either side of the highly divisive issue of same-sex marriage. Through a comparative case study, the research showed that at the subnational level many issues affect coalition success, including political culture, divisiveness, and in what arena policy change is occurring. Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder that is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. ADHD is commonly diagnosed in childhood and one of the most frequent referral concerns brought to the attention of school psychologists, yet it is often misdiagnosed (Cotuono, 1993; Des granges, Des granges, & Karsky, 1995). This study was designed to evaluate the presence of sick building syndrome in a classroom at Unity High School (Mendon, Illinois) and contrast differences in the number of fungal spores per cubic meter of air in different rooms in the building and between seasons. Air and surface samples were taken to analyze the number of fungal spores per cubic meter and to evaluate generic fungal diversity. Adolescent sexual activity can involve risky behaviors, such as failure to use a condom and having multiple sexual partners, which leads to increased risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis. Prior research has shown that maternal factors, including maternal report of sexual communication and adolescent perceived approval of sexual activity, are associated with the level of sexual activity engaged in by adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine counseling practitioner attitudes regarding the diagnosis, conceptualization and treatment of trans gender clients, and to observe possible factors affecting counselor views of trans gender individuals and their presenting issues. The Counselor Attitude Survey (CAS) was designed to measure coonselor attitudes toward trans gender individuals. This measure was distributed to 1000 members of the American Counseling Association throughout the United States and United States territories, resulting in 66 total respondents. The negative effects of poor sleep habits have been widely studied, although there is little research focusing on the academic impact that poor sleep has among the college student population, where poor sleep seems to be prevalent. Research studies have consistently documented that sleep difficulties and daytime tiredness affect more than half of college students. Daytime naps, pulling "all-nighter" cram sessions, and late bedtimes and rise times are just a few of the common scenarios that deeply disturb the sleep quality and quantity of college students. The Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) is a 777 km2 former nuclear weapon material production and current research facility located along the Savannah River in west-central South Carolina. In 1954, direct environmental discharges were released from "M-Area", a fuel and aluminum-clad Uranium (U) nuclear reactor target manufacturing facility through a drainage ditch into the Tims Branch-Steed Pond water system. The ability to analyze mixtures of two or more red-ox active components "on-the-spot" without the need to carry the sample into a laboratory is typically limited by the fact that various components need to be separated before they can be quantified. Reducing the two-step protocol (separation and detection) to a single one (detection) would markedly shorten the analysis time and simplify the analysis.

In this present study, I use C. elegans as a model organism to better characterize the phenotypic response to deficiencies in base excision repair (BER). This will help to elucidate how DNA damage, increased mutagenesis, and exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS) is related to Metabolic Syndrome. Additionally, this work will establish a starting point for investigation that can further characterize phenotypic responses such as mitochondrial physiology and morphology through measurements of mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial circularity. The dynamics of a close-loop electrostatic MEMS resonator, proposed as a platform for ultra sensitive mass sensors, is investigated. The parameter space of the resonator actuation voltage is investigated to determine the optimal operating regions. Bifurcation diagrams of the resonator response are obtained at five different actuation voltage levels. The resonator exhibits bi-stability with two coexisting stable equilibrium points located inside a lower and an upper potential wells. Steady-state chaotic attractors develop inside each of the potential wells and around both wells. The optimal region in the parameter space for mass sensing purposes is determined. Adult Leptodactylus pentadactylus (Figure 1) are large, the head is about as wide as long, and the hind limbs are moderately long (Table 1; Heyer and Thompson [2000] provided definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodactylus). Male vocal sacs are not visible externally or are moderately expanded as a single sac. Sexually active males usually do not have hypertrophied forearms (the largest male examined, 195 mm SVL, has very weakly hypertrophied forearms), only the largest males have a single small to moderate size black spine on each thumb.
