Measurement of gamma radiation attenuation coefficients on carbon steel using gamma radiation beam from Iridium-192 has been made to permit their use for precision measurement, material studies and in various industrial radiographic techniques. The material examined is carbon steel plates with various thicknesses ranging from 2 mm to 13 mm. There are two aspects in this study; determination of the attenuation coefficient using theoretical method, and from experiments. Compared to the rest of the brain, the cerebellum is a small but outstanding structure which is present in all vertebrates. It is a dorsally located metencephalic structure of the rhombencephalon and plays important roles in movements. As in other vertebrates, the cerebellum is expected to be regulating the control of fish movements; related to maintenance of posture and balance, and coordinated movements. Emphasis of the study was on the gross morphology and neurohistology of the cerebellum of selected freshwater fishes. The concentration of five heavy metals, namely copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) were determined in water, sediment, fish, cockles and shrimp collected from eight selected sites in Larut River and Sangga Besar River which are located in the state of Perak. Water quality parameters such as pH, DO, temperature and salinity were monitored. The results were then compared to the recommended Marine Water Quality Standards for Malaysia (MWQS) and DOE Water Quality Criteria for Malaysia. The snakehead murrel, Channa striata, or “Haruan” in Malaysia, is well known with its pharmaceutical purpose and hence is extensively studied for its biochemical compound involved in medication while its knowledge on population structure is poorly inventoried. The central aim of this study is to identify the conversational topics of urban Malaysian preschoolers. Using quantitative and qualitative approaches, this descriptive study elicited data from an urban, English medium child care and development centre, which provided two groups that comprised 18 preschoolers of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Punjabi descent. A compact digital camera with video recording function was used to record the preschoolers’ reading time, activity time, drawing time, playtime and mealtime conversations on a first-hand basis for four consecutive days and on two separate occasions – September 2009 and March 2010. The research aims to investigate the effectiveness of teaching aids in Arabic Language learning among Standard 5 j-QAF program students. 60 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Klang Jaya, Klang, Selangor are chosen as this research respondents. The findings shows that 3 most favorable teaching aids are computer (90.0%), pictures (76.7%) and power point slides (75.0%). The objectives of this study were to determine the efficiency of controlled internal drug release (CIDR) to synchronize estrus in cow, and to study the success rate of estrus synchronization and fertility responses with respect to animal’s breed, farming system and body condition score (BCS). The study was conducted between January 2007 to December 2008 in three private farms in Gua Musang, Kelantan. Persicaria chinensis var. chinensis is a native variety in Malaysia and found in the tropics growing in lowland and lower montane forests. Growth habit and morphological differences were observed between the highland and lowland varieties. The anthesis of the highland wild population was at 0600–0730 hours whereas that of the lowland variety was at 0745–0930 hours. The anther is tetrasporangiate and the wall development conforms to the Monocotyledonous type. This study is an interdisciplinary research that analyses written discourses in natural history through the genre analysis’ lens. Genres are explored and examined by drawing on insights gathered from different disciplines such as linguistics, communication and environmental humanities. Data collected comprise a corpus of selected natural history texts published by the Malaysian Nature Society, Malaysia’s oldest non-governmental environmental and conservation body. In forensic entomology, knowledge of insect taxonomy, development, behaviour and ecology is required to allow accurate data interpretation from entomological evidence in investigations. In this thesis, five forensic entomology related studies have been carried out and discussed in two Malaysian forensically important fly families, the Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae. These studies involve the taxonomy, species checklist, ecological distribution, dipteran succession pattern on pig carcasses in Sarawak and DNA-based species identification analysis. This study aims to investigate and analyze morpho-syntactic errors on ESL learners’ essays; it attempts to identify these errors, justifies and provides evidences, and establishes how lexical information affects the sentential structure. The subject of this study comprises of 36 narrative essays written by Sudanese university students, Minimalist Program is used as analytical tool. The results revealed that, agreement features, inflectional morphology, categorical features, and lexical projections of TP to be errors found in the study. The present study evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of three mangrove species namely, Sonneratial alba, Rhizophora mucronat and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The bioactivities of methanol, ethanol and chloroform extracts of in vivo and in vitro explants of S. alba and in vivo explants of R. mucronata and B. gymnorrhiza were evaluated. The effects of growth regulators on seed germination of S. alba, to obtain the in vitro explants, were also studied. Spatio-temporal distribution of larval fish in the Matang mangrove estuaries and adjacent coastal waters was examined from monthly surface horizontal tows from May 2002 to October 2003 at seven stations located 10.6 km upstream to 16 km offshore. A total of 92,934 fish larvae, representing 19 families were identified. A further 3 families were recorded in the mangrove waters during diel studies but not found during monthly samplings. Larval fish community using mangrove estuaries and nearshore waters mainly consists of a few key families of residents (e.g. Gobiidae) and euryhaline fishes (e.g. Engraulidae), whereas the wider diversity of other fish …

Dynamics and trophic role of zooplankton community were studied in the Matang mangrove estuaries and adjacent coastal waters, Malaysia. Monthly zooplankton samples collected from May 2002 to October 2003 at five stations located from the upper estuary (7 km upstream) to 16 km offshore showed highest biomass and abundance of zooplankton at nearshore waters. Both standing stocks decreased towards upstream and offshore waters. Copepods (62% of total zooplankton abundance) dominated the zooplankton, followed by larvae of cirripede (18%) and polychaete (4%). This study attempts to look into the realization of politeness strategies among family members in naturally occurring conversations. One of the important aspects of this study is to determine the patterns of politeness strategies demonstrated among family members in a family. On top of that, this study also delves into how the interlocutors accommodate face strategies among family members. In this qualitative study, a non-participation observation was deployed. This study comprised seven sets of conversations, with 35 subjects being involved and each set of the conversation lasting between 50 and 60 minutes. The purpose of this research is to identify the learning style of Diploma students in learning German language at German-Malaysian Institute and to find out the relationship between the learning styles and the academic achievement. A total of 190 Diploma students from different year of studies and courses at GMI involved in this study. The respondents comprised of 108 male and 82 female students.
