Yogurt is popularly consumed because of its high digestibility, refreshing organoleptic properties and the healthy bacteria it contains. Milk incubated with starter culture (SC) at 41⁰C in the presence of plants (Momordica grosvenori, Psidium guajava, Lycium barbarum or Garcinia mangostana) water extract were studied to examine the effects on acidification, microbial growth, gelation and exopolysaccharide (EPS) content. Initial pH values (5.8-6.2) of the mixture of milk, plant water extract and SC were not different (p>0.05) from control (6.20; mixture of milk and SC). The first part in this research, was screened six strains of Geomyces spp. isolated from King George Island in the Maritime Antarctica for chitinase enzyme. Initially, microfungi were grown at 4 °C and 25 °C on a series of plates each containing 1% colloid chitin, 0.5% (NH4)2SO4, 0.05% MgSO4.7H2O, 0.24% KH2PO4, 0.06% K2HPO4.3H2O and 1.5% agar. Colony radius and hydrolytic activity were measured and a relative activity index (RA) constructed. Relative activity values at 25 ˚C were higher than at 4 ˚C. Hydrated lime is used for pH adjustment as part of the treatment process at the main wastewater treatment plant in Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station, Manjung. Many problems are encountered in usage of hydrated lime mainly in terms of handling. Manual labour is used to load hydrated lime into bag unloader and it is a messy job because some of the chemical spills and gets air borne. This is also a safety concern. Phyllanthus niruri (P. niruri) is an important Malaysian medicinal plant commonly used traditionally for the treatment of many aliments. The present investigation was designed to elucidate the chemoprotective effects of ethanolic extract of this plant against azoxymethane-induced (AOM) foci of aberrant crypts in rats. Sprague Dawley rats received injections of AOM (15mg/kg, once weekly) for two weeks. Daily treatments with P. niruri extracted, 250mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of body weight as low and high dose, respectively, were orally administered for eight weeks. A feed-forward loop (FFL) is one type of transcription network motifs studied in systems biology. So far, eight types of FFL based on their regulatory patterns have been identified. The majority of FFL found in transcription networks of biological systems have been identified to belong to coherent and incoherent type 1 FFL. Nevertheless, six FFL types (coherent and incoherent type 2, 3 and 4 FFL) are present in low frequencies in Escherichia coli. The study was to detect and characterize the selected antimicrobial resistance genes, class 1 integron, Salmonella Genomic Island 1 (SGI1) and plasmid profile of 41 selected multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella strains of human origin. Salmonella strains harbored blaCTX-M (33.3%) followed by blaTEM (25.0%), blaPSE-1 (13.9%), blaCMY-2 (8.3%) and blaSHV (2.8%) genes. Quinolone or fluoroquinolone-resistant strains harbored qnrB (75.0%) and qnrS (29.2%) genes. Concurrent presence of β-lactamase genes and qnr genes were detected in 9 strains, including S. The study investigated the use of waste date from date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera) as a source of bio-ethanol production that could be used as a fuel. Similarity searching tools are generally divided to two distinct groups: Alignment-based and alignment-free methods. There is no standard comparison between alignment-based and alignment-free methods` performance. In this project, I compared CLUSTALW, T-COFFEE and MUSCLE algorithms with four alignment-free methods, Kr, D2, D2z and MplusD to find out which of these methods are more efficient with respect to time and accuracy. In both alignment-based and alignment-free, results are represented by phylogenetic trees. We studied bacterial community structure in three different sewage treatment plants (STPs), namely STP 1, 2 and 3, in Klang Valley. STP 1, 2 and 3 were located in residential, commercial and light-industrial areas, respectively. Cu and Pb pollution detected in STP 3 was shown to affect its sludge production and biomass. Investigation by 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE demonstrated that bacterial community structures in the three STPs were different; and heavy metal resistant bacteria were predominant at STP 3. Hypocarbia commonly occurs in infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass causing respiratory alkalosis with pH-stat management. In this study, pCO2 regulation was adjusted accordingly to sweep gas in control and treatment groups with gas-to-blood flow ratio of 0.5:1. Each extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (Capiox® RX05 and Medtronic® Minimax Plus® Hollow Fiber Oxygenator) contained control and treatment groups to determine carbogen intervention is necessary for infants undergoing hypothermic bypass. MicroRNAs are ~20-22nt non protein-coding RNA regulatory genes that posttranscriptionally regulate many protein–coding genes to influence critical biological and metabolic processes. While the number of known microRNA is increasing, there is no published data for microRNA in freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) a commercially cultured and economically important food species. Through deep parallel sequencing and an in silico data analysis approach, 327 miRNA families have been identified from small RNA libraries with reference to both the de novo transcriptome of M.rosenbergii obtained from RNA-Seq and to miRBase (Release 18.0, November 2011). determination of cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin residues in crude palm oil (CPO), crude palm kernel oil (CPKO), and soil samples using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The first half of the thesis studied the development and optimization of pesticides extraction from palm oil samples. Sample preparations were divided into two parts. The first part was the extraction step based on low-temperature extraction technique. Factors such as acetonitrile volume, decanting the liquid phase from the precipitated oil after low-temperature precipitation, and the freezing time were studied and optimized. Formations of silicon nanowires using aurum and indium catalyst by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition and hot-wire chemical vapour deposition techniques were studied in this work. The depositions were carried out by using a home-built dual-mode plasma-assisted hot-wire chemical vapour deposition system. A tungsten filament with purity of 99.95% was employed for evaporation of aurum or indium wire to form catalyst on a substrate. Silane gas, which was diluted in hydrogen carrier gas was used as a precursor for the growth of the silicon nanowires. Little data is available in the scientific literature on postharvest changes taking place in three varieties of Syzygium samarangense fruits, an increasingly popular fruit in the Asian region. In this study, the postharvest physico-chemical and mechanical properties of three varieties of Syzygium samarangense (red, pink and deep red) namely, fruit color, weight loss, pulp firmness, total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, total sugar, total starch and total protein were determined during the postharvest storage period under ambient conditions of Syzygium samarangense fruits.
