Transient Camk-Ii Activation Is Necessary For Left-Right Asymmetry In The Zebrafish Embryo, Ludmila Francescatto
Transient Camk-Ii Activation Is Necessary For Left-Right Asymmetry In The Zebrafish Embryo, Ludmila Francescatto
Theses and Dissertations
Despite external bilateral symmetry, the internal organs of vertebrates are asymmetrically arranged. The development of Left-Right (LR) asymmetry is dependent on the activity of a ciliated organ known as the Kupffer’s vesicle (KV) or the embryonic node, in zebrafish and mouse, respectively. Cilia beating within the KV are essential to generate a counterclockwise flow of fluid, which leads to left-sided Ca2+ elevation. Ca2+ is a crucial morphogenic second messenger during vertebrate development. Ca2+ elevation activates targets, such as CaMK-II, which is also known as the multifunctional Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase. Studies have linked CaMK-II to secretion (mediated through synapsin I) and …
Effects Of Light Limitation On Plant-Rhizobia And Plant-Mycorrhiza Interactions, Jess A. Millar
Effects Of Light Limitation On Plant-Rhizobia And Plant-Mycorrhiza Interactions, Jess A. Millar
Anthós
Plants respond with a sink stimulation of photosynthesis when colonized by bacterial and fungal mutualists, which compensates for costs of carbohydrate allocation to the microbes. Problems may arise when light is limited and plants cannot increase photosynthesis. We hypothesize that under such conditions the costs for maintaining the mutualism outweigh the benefits, which ultimately turns the beneficial microbes into parasites exploiting resources and reducing host fitness. We study these plant-‐microbe interactions under different light availabilities using lima bean plants, rhizobia (nitrogen-‐fixing bacteria), and mycorrhizal fungi. In our study, we apply two levels of light (full light and light intensity reduced …

New Records Of Alien Gastropoda In The Hawaiian Islands: 1996–2010, Kenneth Hayes, Norine Yeung, Jaynee Kim, Robert Cowie
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
The alien nonmarine gastropods of the Hawaiian islands were cataloged by Cowie (1997) and were reviewed by Cowie (1998a). Subsequent new records (both for the archipelago and for individual islands) were reported by Cowie (1998b, 1999, 2000), Kraus (2003), and, specifically associated with the horticultural industry between 2004 and 2006, by Hayes et al. (2007), reviewed and analyzed by Cowie et al. (2008). Subsequent surveys, covering 196 sites across the six largest main Hawaiian islands during 2006–2010, have resulted in the additional new records reported here. We surveyed 29 locations on Kaua'i, 48 on O'ahu, 13 on Moloka'i, 50 on …

Surfactant-Sensitized Spectrophotometric Determination Of Hg(Ii) In Water Samples Using 2-(2-Thiazolylazo)- P-Cresol As Ligand And Cetylpyridinium Chloride As Cationic Surfactant, Ramazan Gürkan, Tuğba Çepken, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Ulusoy
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new, reliable, surfactant-sensitized method is described for the spectrophotometric determination of total and dissolved inorganic mercury at trace levels. The method is based on the ternary complex formation of Hg(II) with 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol and a cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride, at pH 9.5. The detection and quantification limits of the method with surfactant were 6 and 19 \mu g L^{-1}, while those of the method without surfactant were 22 and 67 \mu g L^{-1}, respectively. The method obeys Beer's law at up to approximately 10 mg L^{-1} Hg(II) in an aqueous surfactant medium. The relative errors and relative standard deviations of …

Determination Of Cadmium In High Salt Content Matrices By Flow Injection Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Orkun Alp, Hakan Demi̇röz, Osman Yavuz Ataman, Nusret Ertaş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Flow injection cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-CVAAS) was used for determination of cadmium in high salt matrices such as dialysis concentrates and textile leach solutions. The parameters such as acidity, concentration of reducing agent, reaction coil length, and carrier gas flow rate were investigated to obtain the best sensitivity. No significant background signal was observed even at high salt concentrations. Under the optimized conditions the limit of detection value (3s_b m^{-1}, where s_b is the standard deviation of the blank signals and m is the slope of the calibration graph) was found to be 0.05 ng mL^{-1} for an …

Reforming State Mental Health Parity Law, Stacey A. Tovino
Reforming State Mental Health Parity Law, Stacey A. Tovino
Faculty Articles
This Article is the final installment in a three-part project that presents a comprehensive challenge to lingering legal distinctions between physical and mental illness in the context of health insurance. The first installment in this series narrowly inquired as to whether the postpartum mood disorders should be classified as physical or mental illnesses in a range of health law contexts, including the context of health insurance. The second installment was broader in scope and challenged a number of federal provisions that allow publicly- and privately-funded health care programs and plans to provide mental health insurance benefits that are less comprehensive …

Students’ Attributions Of Instructor Credibility As A Function Of Instructors’ Out-Of-Class Support, Adam C. Jones, Paul Schrodt
Basic Communication Course Annual
This investigation examined the impact that instructor out-of-class support (OCS) and sex differences have on students’ perceptions of instructor credibility. Participants (N = 634) were randomly assigned to one of six experimental conditions manipulating the degree to which an instructor responds with a highly supportive, moderately supportive, or non-supportive message following a hypothetically stressful situation. Multivariate analyses revealed a two-way interaction effect of instructor OCS by student sex on perceptions of instructor credibility. Significant and meaningful main effects for instructor OCS on all three dimensions of credibility (i.e., competence, trustworthiness, and caring) were also obtained, with students attributing more credibility …

[Introduction To] Believing And Acting: The Pragmatic Turn In Comparative Religion And Ethics, G. Scott Davis
[Introduction To] Believing And Acting: The Pragmatic Turn In Comparative Religion And Ethics, G. Scott Davis
Bookshelf
How should religion and ethics be studied if we want to understand what people believe and why they act the way they do? In the 1980s and '90s postmodernist worries about led to debates that turned on power, truth, and relativism. Since the turn of the century scholars impressed by 'cognitive science' have introduced concepts drawn from evolutionary biology, neurosciences, and linguistics in the attempt to provide 'naturalist' accounts of religion. Deploying concepts and arguments that have their roots in the pragmatism of C. S. Peirce, Believing and Acting argues that both approaches are misguided and largely unhelpful in answering …

The Parasite That Causes Whirling Disease, Myxobolus Cerebralis, Is Genetically Variable Within And Across Spatial Scales, Nilanjan Lodh, Billie L. Kerans, Lori Stevens
Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Understanding the genetic structure of parasite populations on the natural landscape can reveal important aspects of disease ecology and epidemiology and can indicate parasite dispersal across the landscape. Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxozoa: Myxosporea), the causative agent of whirling disease in the definitive host Tubifex tubifex, is native to Eurasia and has spread to more than 25 states in the USA. The small amounts of data available to date suggest that M. cerebralis has little genetic variability. We examined the genetic variability of parasites infecting the definitive host T. tubifex in the Madison River, MT, and also from …

Minimalist Ensemble Algorithms For Genome-Wide Protein Localization Prediction, J.-R. Lin, A. M. Mondal, R. Liu, Jianjun Hu
Faculty Publications
Background
Computational prediction of protein subcellular localization can greatly help to elucidate its functions. Despite the existence of dozens of protein localization prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy and coverage are still low. Several ensemble algorithms have been proposed to improve the prediction performance, which usually include as many as 10 or more individual localization algorithms. However, their performance is still limited by the running complexity and redundancy among individual prediction algorithms.
Results
This paper proposed a novel method for rational design of minimalist ensemble algorithms for practical genome-wide protein subcellular localization prediction. The algorithm is based on combining a feature …

Biometric Alternatives To Captcha: Exploring Accessible Interface Options, Anita Foley
Dissertations
In the computing domain the relationship between accessibility and security is a complex and evolving one; accessibility attempts to ensure that as wide a range of individuals as possible are granted access to systems, whereas security attempts to restrict access only to individuals who are entitled to access those systems. A key security concern is to determine whether or not the system is being accessed by a software agent or a real human being, and a number of approaches have been developed to determine the answer to this question. This issue has been discussed throughout the history of computer science …

Governments are the custodians of vast amount of data. While some of this data may be sensitive in nature, in that it contains personal or confidential information, much of it is in the public interest. Recent years has seen the emergence of Open Government Data (OGD) where governments are now actively making their data available in open and electronically accessible formats. The motivation for the production of such data includes a desire to increase transparency but also a desire to realise the economic potential associated with re-use of this data. A key usage area for this data to date has …

Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to provide Assistive Technology (AT) professionals involved in the area of education and training with a set of reusable technological tools and techniques that will enable them to increase the reach, efficiency, effectiveness and accessibility of their training through online delivery. There are a number of broadly accepted reasons why an organisation in any field might choose to make training available online or partially online (blended) rather than relying on traditional face to face methods. Of the four considered here and mentioned above, accessibility is the biggest concern in the context of AT. It …

Intercropping cereal grains and legumes has potential as an alternative cool-season forage crop in low-input farming systems. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of density, species proportion, and nitrogen (N) supply on the biomass accumulation of field pea and spring oat grown as sole or intercrops. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using an additive series experimental design. Treatments included three fertilizer N rates and 20 density/proportion combinations in a randomized complete block with four replications. Sole plant densities included 2, 3, 4, 5 plants of each species pot-1 (16 cm in diameter, 16 cm in height). The …

Beef Heifer Development And Profitability, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Richard N. Funston Funston
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The determination of the ideal breeding size of beef replacement females is traditionally centered on maximizing pregnancy rate. Relevant physical and economic relationships were combined into a bioeconomic systems model that identified key profit factors. This system-wide approach encapsulated the physical relationships with relevant costs and revenues, including annual and seasonal variations and measures relative to profitability through the application of an incomplete or modified profit function. Optimaloutcomes were relative to heifer size and management regime.

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, researchers cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, they must sample the population. The use of statistics allows researchers and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description of the expectations …
