It also examines the adverse impact and costs associated with the obesity problem. Next, this Article discusses the justification for government intervention, as well as the benefits and disadvantages of using the tax system as a way of shaping consumption and physical activity patterns. It then summarizes recent efforts by various levels of government in the U.S. to use the tax system to affect eating and …
Yellow, In Peril: How Public Health Discourse On Tuberculosis (Tb) Reveals, Refines, And Reinforces The Racial Stigmatization Of Asian Americans, Laura Dellplain
Yellow, In Peril: How Public Health Discourse On Tuberculosis (Tb) Reveals, Refines, And Reinforces The Racial Stigmatization Of Asian Americans, Laura Dellplain
Honors Papers
In this paper, I argue that while public health discourse on tuberculosis may reveal existent epidemiological trends in and among particular social groups, the discursive framing of this data unnecessarily racializes the disease. More specifically, public health discourse uses frameworks of "othering" and an imagined transnationalism to reflect but also refine and reinforce historicized stigmas of Asian Americans as non-normative, perpetual outsiders, and disease carriers. I assert that this discursive raciliazation of TB superficially constructs a causal link between Asian Americans and the incidence of TB in America and consequently results in significant social and political costs for many Asian …
Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Political Action, Charlie Hartford
Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Political Action, Charlie Hartford
Honors Papers
In the first section, I begin with an account of action within the context of the vita activa as laid out by Arendt in The Human Condition. I then proceed to identify some of the more perplexing features of her account, and suggest that they are confounding enough to throw the coherency of what Arendt is saying into question. Taking my cue from Hanna Pitkin, I then argue that we can understand action as activity informed by thinking, by drawing upon Arendt's posthumously published work The Life of the Mind. This account, however, though illuminating with regard to some aspects …

Computational Investigation Of The Mechanism Of N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonculeotide Synthetase, Venkata Pakkala
Computational Investigation Of The Mechanism Of N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonculeotide Synthetase, Venkata Pakkala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
N5-CAIR synthetase catalyzes the conversion of 5-amino-imidazole ribonucleotide (AIR), Mg2ATP, and bicarbonate into N5-CAIR, Mg2ADP, and inorganic phosphate. DFT and ONIOM QM/MM computations revealed that the first step in the reaction mechanism of N5-CAIR synthetase involves the formation of dianionic carboxyphosphate (CP) from the attack of bicarbonate on the γ- phosphate of Mg2ATP, through an SN2 type transition structure. Properties of CP were never reported, as this compound is extremely unstable (t1/2 of 70 ms). Therefore, high level ab inito (MP2 and CCSD(T)), and DFT (B3LYP, BB1K, M05-2X, M06-2X and MPW1K) methods were used to investigate the structure and energetics …

Expert Performance By Athletes In The Verbal Estimation Of Spatial Extents Does Not Alter Their Perceptual Metric Of Space, Frank H. Durgin, Keenan R. Leonard-Solis , '12, Owen T. Masters , '12, Brittany P. Schmelz , '12, Z. Li
Psychology Faculty Works
Athletes often give more accurate estimates of egocentric distance along the ground than do non-athletes. To explore whether cognitive calibration was accompanied by perceptual change, athletes and non-athletes made verbal height and distance estimates and also did a perceptual matching task between perceived egocentric distances and frontal vertical extents. Both groups were well calibrated for height estimation for poles viewed frontally, but athletes were much better calibrated at estimating longer egocentric distances (which are systematically underestimated by non-athletes). Athletes were more likely to have learned specific units of ground distance from relevant sports contexts. Both groups reported using human height …
A Comparison Of Two Theories Of Perceived Distance On The Ground Plane: The Angular Expansion Hypothesis And The Intrinsic Bias Hypothesis, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin
A Comparison Of Two Theories Of Perceived Distance On The Ground Plane: The Angular Expansion Hypothesis And The Intrinsic Bias Hypothesis, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin
Psychology Faculty Works
Two theories of distance perception-ie, the angular expansion hypothesis (Durgin and Li, 2011 Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics 73 1856-1870) and the intrinsic bias hypothesis (Ooi et al, 2006 Perception 35 605-624)-are compared. Both theories attribute exocentric distance foreshortening to an exaggeration in perceived slant, but their fundamental geometrical assumptions are very different. The intrinsic bias hypothesis assumes a constant bias in perceived geographical slant of the ground plane and predicts both perceived egocentric and exocentric distances are increasingly compressed. In contrast, the angular expansion hypothesis assumes exaggerations in perceived gaze angle and perceived optical slant. Because the bias functions of …
Mass Spectrometry Applied To Problems In Lipid Biochemistry: Microchip Based Approach For Lipidomics Profiling And Analysis Of Lipid Metabolites By Lc-Ms/Ms, Tao Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lipidomics and metabolomics are powerful tools for the examination of cellular metabolism and physiology. Methods for lipid analysis need to be developed that begin with small samples and do not overly dilute or disperse the sample in the separation process. Microchips provide a platform for interfacing lysis of small cell populations with on-chip solid phase extraction for isolating lipid samples to generate high quality mass spectra from very small samples. Chapter 1 of this dissertation presents a novel method for small scale lipidomics of bacterial cells by microchip based extraction coupled with untargeted profiling of glycerophospholipids using nanoelectrospray ionization mass …
I Do. Is That Okay With You?: A Look At How Most States Are Circumventing The Full Faith And Credit Clause And Equal Protection Clause To Not Recognize Legal Same-Sex Marriages From Other States And Its Effect On Society, Rebecca Hameroff
Florida A & M University Law Review
Due to statutes, bans, and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, states do not have to recognize legal same-sex marriages from sister states that recognize same-sex marriage. This paper examines the denial of the fundamental right to marriage for same-sex couples, the violation of the Full Faith and Credit Clause of Article IV, Section 1 of the United States Constitution and Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution by not recognizing same-sex marriages legally performed in other states. It starts by looking at the impact these practices have on same-sex couples and the toll it …

Motivation: An Occupational Therapists Guide For Motivating Young Male Clients With Spinal Cord Injuries, Michael A. Nelson, Elizabeth M. Schleicher
Occupational Therapy Capstones
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2010), males account for approximately 80% of those who endure a spinal cord injury (SCI). Most newly diagnosed clients with spinal cord injuries are between the ages of 15-35 years (50%-70%) (CDC, 2010). Occupational therapists often work with clients who have sustained a SCI. It is in the best interest of the profession and our clients to address the psychosocial impact motivation can have on clients' recovery.
According to authors of research, a major problem to participation in treatment with clients who had a spinal cord injury was a lack of …

Hela Cells And Unjust Enrichment In The Human Body, Deleso A. Alford
Hela Cells And Unjust Enrichment In The Human Body, Deleso A. Alford
Journal Publications
Henrietta Lacks achieved fame and immortality in the world of science. In 1951, Johns Hopkins Hospital harvested the tissue of Ms. Lacks, a 31-year-old African American woman diagnosed with cervical cancer to mass produce "HeLa cells."' The money derived from her cell line produced wonders and scientific breakthroughs in technology, biology and medicine which "far exceeds that reflected in the published literature, because it is the reference cell in so many research laboratories.”
In this essay, I place Ms. Lacks' parts (tissue cells) back into her body to raise a claim of unjust enrichment. I discuss the ongoing debate as …

Understanding Escience: Reflections On A Houston Symposium, Joanne V. Romano, Allen Lopez, Maianh Phi
Library Staff Publications
EScience is a research methodology combining data collection, storage and networking on a massive scale. By its very nature, eScience presents new and diverse opportunities in librarianship. While various academic institutions such as Cornell, Georgia Tech, and the University of Massachusetts are already engaged in well-established projects at their libraries, eScience is still relatively new to many others. To explain eScience and its implications for medical librarians within the Texas Medical Center, The Texas Medical Center (TMC) Library hosted an event on February 13, 2012, called Understanding eScience: A Symposium for Medical Librarians.

The Indirect Effect Of Earthworms On Methane Flux In Two Temperate Pasture Soils, Edward J. Avizinis
The Indirect Effect Of Earthworms On Methane Flux In Two Temperate Pasture Soils, Edward J. Avizinis
Open Access Master's Theses
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is produced or consumed by microorganisms in soil, depending on soil conditions. In general, anaerobic conditions promote activity of methanogenic Archaea, whereas aerobic conditions promote methane consumption by methanotrophic bacteria. Earthworms may have an effect on methane flux in soil by altering soil pore space, aeration, moisture content, and organic carbon availability, all of which affect the activities of methanogens and methanotrophs. As the range of European and Asian earthworm species expands throughout the United States, their potential effects on methane flux may have global implications.
My research focused on the effects of earthworms on …
Assessment Of Inundation Risk From Sea Level Rise And Storm Surge In Coastal National Parks, Angelica Murdukhayeva
Assessment Of Inundation Risk From Sea Level Rise And Storm Surge In Coastal National Parks, Angelica Murdukhayeva
Open Access Master's Theses
In coastal ecosystems, sea level rise and an increase in storm frequency and intensity are two major impacts expected to result from climate change. Coastal National Parks have many low-lying areas that are at risk from inundation resulting from these impacts. In order to help park managers meet their goal of preserving valuable resources, I developed a methodology to evaluate risk of inundation from sea level rise and storm surge at sentinel sites, areas of importance for natural, cultural and infrastructural resources.
I performed a literature review on the factors driving sea level rise in the Northeast, and conducted an …
Synthesis And Bioassay Of Novel Hybrid Antimicrobial Peptides (Amps), Designed To Increase Therapeutic Activity And Decrease Hemolysis, David E. Ryder
Synthesis And Bioassay Of Novel Hybrid Antimicrobial Peptides (Amps), Designed To Increase Therapeutic Activity And Decrease Hemolysis, David E. Ryder
Open Access Master's Theses
There is currently a critical health issue of global concern; there are many types of bacterial pathogens that have evolved a resistance to many common, conventional antibiotics. In silico structural tools can be used to identify antimicrobial peptide (AMP) sequence modifications that result in better antibacterial therapeutics without increasing human erythrocyte hemolysis. Out of the five AMPs designed for this Thesis project, two were minor modifications of an existing Pleurocidin-Dermaseptin (P-DER) hybrid sequence. The in silico structural design strategies were used to determine on a biophysical level what made P-DER so effective. The tools included the Chou-Fasman secondary structure algorithm, …
Impact Of The Health It Up Intervention On Plasma Lipids And Glucose In College Students, Shira Hirshberg
Impact Of The Health It Up Intervention On Plasma Lipids And Glucose In College Students, Shira Hirshberg
Open Access Master's Theses
Purpose: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) cause over 2200 American deaths daily and include coronary heart disease (CHD), the fifth leading cause of death in young adults. Those with diabetes mellitus are especially vulnerable to CHD, as heart disease death rates are two to four times higher in this population. Blood lipids and glucose can be used to estimate CVD risk, and include elevated plasma total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triacylglycerol (TAG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting plasma glucose. Prevalence of these risk factors is evident in college students across …

Eating Pace Intervention Classes 3: Female Students At The University Of Rhode Island Feinstein Campus, Ruthann Sampson
Open Access Master's Theses
Background: Over one-third of the United States is obese. This weight status is associated with many negative health implications including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Female college students are a sub-group especially prone to excess kilocalorie (kcal) consumption, leading to weight gain. Consuming food at a fast pace has been associated with increased kilocalorie consumption. Interventions reducing eating rate may be an effective method to reduce kilocalorie consumption in female college students.
Objective: To determine if a 5 week curriculum designed to reduce eating pace would decrease consumption rate (kcal/minute) and total kcal eaten at a control meal, in …
Increasing Breastfeeding In Wic Participants Using Information About Formula Cost As A Motivator, Viviane Fornasaro-Donahue
Increasing Breastfeeding In Wic Participants Using Information About Formula Cost As A Motivator, Viviane Fornasaro-Donahue
Open Access Master's Theses
Despite the widely documented health benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding rates continue to fall short of Healthy People 2020 Objectives, particularly among women enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The amount of formula supplied by WIC often is insufficient to fully cover the infant’s demands, thus mothers need to purchase extra cans of formula in addition to what is provided by the WIC Program. However, prior to deciding whether to breastfeed or formula feed their infants, mothers may not be aware of the amount spent monthly on the purchase of extra formula. This information …

Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura
Open Access Master's Theses
Ensuring food security will be a crucial problem in the coming decades. Heterosis, the phenomenon where hybrid progeny exhibit increased vigor in comparison to their inbred parents, has been exploited to increase agricultural yield in maize (Zea mays) for decades due to its monoecious reproductive state. Unisexuality in maize is genetically controlled due to the concerted action of the Tassel seed1 (ts1), Tassel seed2 (ts2), and Silkless1 (sk1) genes. Orthologs of the Tassel seed genes and sk1 can be found in the rice genome even though rice maintains an ancestral cosexual floral …
