Multipartite Quantum Entanglement Evolution In Photosynthetic Complexes, Jing Zhu, Sam Rodriques '13, Ben Brock '11, Peter John Love Jan 2012

Multipartite Quantum Entanglement Evolution In Photosynthetic Complexes, Jing Zhu, Sam Rodriques '13, Ben Brock '11, Peter John Love

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We investigate the evolution of entanglement in the Fenna-Matthew-Olson (FMO) complex based on simulations using the scaled hierarchical equations of motion approach. We examine the role of entanglement in the FMO complex by direct computation of the convex roof. We use monogamy to give a lower bound for entanglement and obtain an upper bound from the evaluation of the convex roof. Examination of bipartite measures for all possible bipartitions provides a complete picture of the multipartite entanglement. Our results support the hypothesis that entanglement is maximum primary along the two distinct electronic energy transfer pathways. In addition, we note that …

Close Encounters, Martin Anthony Arnold Jan 2012

Close Encounters, Martin Anthony Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: The expressiveness of the human figure is the syntax and vocabulary that I use to explore the things that make us human. In coming to really know an individual, we not only gain insights into our own psychological make-up, but we may extrapolate our findings to the broader human condition. Although intimately concerned with highlighting the characteristics that make my subjects distinctive, I am equally determined to examine those traits underscoring our commonality, that bind us all into a human family. I look for fresh ways to pull back the curtain of privacy and allow viewers to intrude on …

Understanding Controlled Evaporation Of Microdroplets Towards Scalable Micro/Nano Manufacturing, Taye Dickson Esho Jan 2012

Understanding Controlled Evaporation Of Microdroplets Towards Scalable Micro/Nano Manufacturing, Taye Dickson Esho

Dissertations

This research investigates the controlled evaporation of microdroplets to the nano scale regime for scalable micro/nano manufacturing. A customized direct write inkjet printing system was utilized to generate monodisperse microdroplets of different fluid types. Two novel approaches were employed to achieve the research objective. The first approach incorporated a convective heat source (i.e. resistive heated ring) to induce controlled heat flux for microdroplet evaporation after ejection from the inkjet system. The temperature of the heated ring was varied to observe reduction of the microdroplet via heat transfer to its lateral periphery. The second approach employed a radiative source (i.e. CO …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nickel Complexes With Relevance To Nickel Acireductone Dioxygenase And Nickel Superoxide Dismutase, Margo Nicole Montgomery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research presents an investigation of synthetic model complexes with relevance to the active site of Ni(II) acireductone dioxygenase (Ni-ARD) and Ni(II) superoxide dismutase (Ni-SOD). Acireductone dioxygenases (ARDs) are a unique set of enzymes found in the methionine salvage pathway that catalyze the oxidation reaction of acireductone (1, 2-dihydroxy-3-oxo-5-(methylthio)pent-1-ene). These enzymes share a compolypeptide sequence but bind different metal ions, Ni2+ or Fe2+, at the active site. The Ni-ARD enzyme is responsible for the off pathway shunt in the pathway. Using the tridentate nitrogen donor ligands hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp*) and the newly developed tris(1, 2-dimethyl-4-imadozyl)carbinol, (4-TICMe, Me) several reactions involving the …

The Cost Of Kinship: Southern Literary Families And The Capitalist Machine, Joshua Sean Lundy Jan 2012

The Cost Of Kinship: Southern Literary Families And The Capitalist Machine, Joshua Sean Lundy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the thematic role of families and the familial in the literature of the Southern Renaissance. Whereas a number of scholars have come at this matter from a strictly cultural perspective, this analysis utilizes an economic framework. Following the example set by Karl Marx, Freidrich Engels, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari, I attempt to formulate an understanding of the southern family not as an independent and singular social organism, but, rather, as a mechanism for the distribution of capital, firmly embedded within modern capitalism's expansive network of production, consumption, and exchange. My argument …

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson Jan 2012

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the ways in which Black men in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora define themselves as gendered beings in their fiction and drama beginning with Richard Wright's publication of Native Son in 1940 to Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter published 1980. Black men created a transnational dialectic concerning their masculinity which involved the creation and criticism of several types of masculinity. In Chapters 1 and 2, I discuss the theoretical and the historical framework for this project. In Chapter 3, I discuss the first type of Black masculinity which was based in opposition to Euro-American stereotypes …

Functional Studies Of Novel Bioactives From Complex Host-Microbiomes As Drug Leads For Cancer, Infectious Disease, Depression And Pain, John Jason Bowling Jan 2012

Functional Studies Of Novel Bioactives From Complex Host-Microbiomes As Drug Leads For Cancer, Infectious Disease, Depression And Pain, John Jason Bowling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The drug discovery process has become increasingly complex in comparison to early efforts particularly those involving diseases or conditions that affect large numbers of the human population. It is difficult to point directly to one factor leading evolution of the process but the definition of a mechanism of pharmacological action for a drug lead has noticeably become a higher priority. This evolution has helped diminish the stigma of natural products and compound supply issues. The issue of compound supply has also been addressed to some extent with the emergence of recombinant technologies and new synthetic methodology. With approximately 60 years …

Between God And Man: Community's Place In Virtue, Practical Reason, And Transcendent Good, Jordan Herz Davis Jan 2012

Between God And Man: Community's Place In Virtue, Practical Reason, And Transcendent Good, Jordan Herz Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Talbot Brewer's Retrieval of Ethics and Robert Adams's Finite and Infinite Goods present distinct theories in ethics and metaethics. Brewer begins with the fundamental ethical perspective of the practical deliberator who experiences his practical deliberations as a continuous, unified, and constantly revised activity which begins with inchoate intimations of goodness and proceeds better or worse to understand and pursue the goodness which pervades his evaluative outlook. From this Brewer aims to account for how we achieve excellence in practical deliberation and arrive at a more tenable and self-consistent evaluative outlook which informs our ethical deliberations. Alternately, Adams begins in the …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Naturally Occuring Halogenated Bipyrroles In A Relevant Marine Species, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Sheree Foster Jan 2012

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Naturally Occuring Halogenated Bipyrroles In A Relevant Marine Species, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Sheree Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Halogenated dimethyl-2-2'-bipyrroles (HDBPs) have recently been discovered in seabird eggs and have been shown to bioaccumulate in trophic organisms. HDBPs are suspected to be biogenic in nature, derived from evidence of marine natural products that are persistent in the environment and widespread in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. The HDBPs exhibit chlorinated and brominated substitution patterns that closely resemble anthropogenic pollutants like the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Environmental health concerns exists regarding these naturally occurring HDBPs because several of these analogs were shown to induce the cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) gene through activation of …

Staging Sodomy: Deviance And Devotion On The Early English Stage, Bobby Ellis Pelts Jan 2012

Staging Sodomy: Deviance And Devotion On The Early English Stage, Bobby Ellis Pelts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the multivalent category of sodomy in late medieval works of and about biblical drama: A Tretise of Miraclis Pleyinge, the York Joseph's Trouble About Mary and the N-Town Passion plays. Because the Tretise of Miraclis Pleyinge invokes charges of sodomy in its attack on biblical drama, this work argues that the medieval stage is particularly hospitable to exploring the queer moments of Christian theology. Focusing on the sodomitic relationships of Christ's life as they are revealed in York's Joseph's Trouble and the N-Town Passion sequences, this thesis argues that these plays problematize Christ's legendary …

A Fractal Analysis Of The Detection Of Glucose Molecules On Biosensor Surfaces, Lokesh Taneja Jan 2012

A Fractal Analysis Of The Detection Of Glucose Molecules On Biosensor Surfaces, Lokesh Taneja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A fractal analysis for the binding and dissociation of glucose molecules to different biosensor surfaces is presented. The sensors contain immobilized glucose oxidase enzymes that have an affinity for the glucose molecules in solution. Data for different modified biosensors is modeled and analyzed, and a single, dual or triple-fractal analysis is applied where adequate. The binding and dissociation kinetics coefficient where applicable are calculated for each of models along with the fractal dimensions. When both binding and dissociation phases are present, the affinity, K of the receptor to the glucose molecule is calculated and its variation with the fractal dimension …

Place, Race, And Religion In The Local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community And Movement Of Memphis, Tennessee, Amy Catherine Ulmer Jan 2012

Place, Race, And Religion In The Local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community And Movement Of Memphis, Tennessee, Amy Catherine Ulmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study observes the role of place in the local LGBT community and movement of Memphis, Tennessee. I gathered information from fifteen interviews, including LGBT Memphians, activists, preachers, and public figures to show what aspects of place have been the most significant in shaping the nature of the local movement, which has been growing since the early 2000s. I suggest that the conservatism, race, and religiosity of Memphis have played the most significant role. The first chapter demonstrates how LGBTs operate within a city that maintains pockets of openness, but remains largely LGBT-unfriendly according to interviewees. The second chapter observes …

Fret Studies Of Dna Binding By Lambda Cro Variants, Lei Wang Jan 2012

Fret Studies Of Dna Binding By Lambda Cro Variants, Lei Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proteins bind to DNA to form switches and circuits that control the flow of genetic information from DNA sequence to the physical components of cells and organisms. The dynamic performance of genetic switches depends on the coupling of the comprocesses of transcription and translation to protein-specific folding, assembly and binding reactions. For many model circuits protein dimerization and DNA binding are fast relative to the time scale of transcription and translation and thus amenable to modeling by statistical thermodynamics. In these cases, the distribution of proteins between monomers and dimers and between nonspecific and specific DNA complexes can be simply …

Isolation, Structure Elucidation And Biological Evaluation Of Natural Products From Plants And Fungi, Xiaoning Wang Jan 2012

Isolation, Structure Elucidation And Biological Evaluation Of Natural Products From Plants And Fungi, Xiaoning Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural products have provided considerable value for drug discovery over the past half-century. Nearly four fifth of drugs were natural products or inspired by natural compounds. Bioactive secondary metabolites isolated from natural source, either fungal or terrestrial, are relatively safer for human health and the environment and can serve as drug or as drug leads for the development of synthetic or semi-synthetic analogs. Natural products have also been successfully used in agriculture as plant growth regulators, signal transductions, fungicides, herbicides and tranquilizers. In our continued efforts to identify bioactive compounds, seventy-seven plant and fungal extracts were evaluated using a direct-bioautography …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease remaining a major public health problem. It causes illness and death especially in developing countries. Comchemotherapeutic agents currently used are often inadequate, requiring long courses of parenteral administration, having toxic side effects or becoming less effective due to the emergence of resistant strains. Thus, there is an urgent need for new, effective, and inexpensive drugs. In the fight against leishmaniasis, natural products are important sources of novel therapeutic agents. The goal of our research is to study secondary metabolites from endophytic fungi as a source of effective antileishmanial agents. Many crude extracts from endophytic fungi …

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2012

The Natural Law Bridge Between Private Law And Public International Law, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

One key similarity between natural law and international law is that they seek to obtain a stable social order without the intervention of any state authority capable of issuing and enforcing its commands to those subject to its rule. Among ordinary individuals in a state of nature that weakness tends to lead to a stripped-down libertarian regime that features simple rules of acquisition, contract, and protection. The system gains its relative stability from the brute fact that between rough equals the party in the defensive posture will win out, so that great disparities in power are needed to disrupt the …

Protecting Open Innovation: The Defensive Patent License As A New Approach To Patent Threats, Transaction Costs, And Tactical Disarmament, Jason M. Schultz, Jennifer M. Urban Jan 2012

Protecting Open Innovation: The Defensive Patent License As A New Approach To Patent Threats, Transaction Costs, And Tactical Disarmament, Jason M. Schultz, Jennifer M. Urban

Faculty Articles

Historically, Open Innovation Communities (OICs), such as those who make free and open source software (FOSS), have opted out of the patent system for three main reasons: Patents are expensive to acquire and enforce; they are philosophically, culturally, and politically anathema to many OIC members; and even when they appear to be acquired for “defensive” or other altruistic purposes, there has been no guarantee against someone later “weaponizing” them for use in an offensive attack. In this article, we first analyze how and why various OICs have approached strategic concerns about intellectual property and then make a case for why …

Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series

Advances in technology and transparency have greatly accelerated the ability of clinicians to remain current with regards to being informed and informing patients about the risk/benefit ratio when considering antidepressant medication. In spite of this, the current climate of pharmaceutical industry influence on medical practice does much to hinder informed consent processes. Recent findings of previously unknown and potentially dangerous adverse effects of the second- and third-generation classes of antidepressants underscore the importance of enhancing the practice of informed consent. After considering the concept of informed consent as it has evolved over time, the authors summarize some of the newer …

From Pond To Pump: Microalgae As A Feedstock For Biodiesel, Anna H. Leavitt Jan 2012

From Pond To Pump: Microalgae As A Feedstock For Biodiesel, Anna H. Leavitt

Honors Theses

The global reliance on fossil fuels is an unsustainable practice that has led to the depletion of finite resources and the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to global climate change (Demirbas 2010). Transportation accounts for about a third of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States. Demand for oil continues to increase and resources are becoming more uncertain. Increased production of renewable fuels such as biofuels can help ease the dependence on fossil fuels. Although interest and production in biofuels has been increasing in the past decade, current feedstocks do not meet efficiency needs and some …

Global environmental change such as climate change and the degradation of ecosystem services is heightening risks and reducing opportunities, especially for poor and vulnerable populations. Such change is taking place in an increasingly globalized, urbanized, interconnected and fast-moving world amidst shifting geopolitical power balances. Burgeoning flows of goods and services, capital and technology, information and labour all fuel a growing global population with implications for patterns of consumption and production. The scale and persistence of global environmental problems require sustained collective efforts to meet internationally agreed goals. Responses at national and regional levels are already available, but addressing the underlying …

Genes, Culture, And Agriculture: An Example Of Human Niche Construction, Michael J. O'Brien, K. N. Laland Jan 2012

Genes, Culture, And Agriculture: An Example Of Human Niche Construction, Michael J. O'Brien, K. N. Laland

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Theory and empirical data from a variety of disciplines strongly imply that recent human history involves extensive gene-culture coevolution, much of it as a direct result of human agricultural practices. Here we draw on niche construction theory (NCT) and gene-culture coevolutionary theory (GCT) to propose a broad theoretical framework (NCT-GCT) with which archaeologists and anthropologists can explore coevolutionary dynamics. Humans are enormously potent niche constructors, and understanding how niche construction regulates ecosystem dynamics is central to understanding the impact of human populations on their ecological and developmental environments. We use as primary examples the evolution of dairying by Neolithic groups …

Religious Consumers And Institutional Challenges To American Public Schools, Aaron J. Saiger Jan 2012

Religious Consumers And Institutional Challenges To American Public Schools, Aaron J. Saiger

Faculty Scholarship

The paradigm of American K–12 education is shifting as the institution of local educational polities, each responsible for own its 'common schools,' faces competition from programs of school choice. Although charter schools and related reforms are generally studied in terms of quality and equity, the rise of consumer sovereignty as an alternative to political sovereignty as an organizing principle for educational governance has much wider ramifications. Paradigms of choice have already begun dramatically to alter religious education and its relationship to public schooling. Moreover, because these paradigms rely upon consumer preferences and the aggregation of those preferences by markets, the …
