The aim of this study was to determine the expression of essential osteogenic genes related to the canonic WNT pathway, i.e., WDR5, sFRP-2, and their downstream genes, in ameloblastoma and to clarify their biologic impact on this neoplasm. Study Design. Forty-six paraffin-embedded ameloblastoma samples and ameloblastic (AM-1) and preosteoblastic (KUSA/A1) cell lines were used. Immunohistochemistry, Western blot, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay were performed. Results. WDR5, essential for osteoblast differentiation and canonic WNT pathway activation, was negative in most ameloblastoma cases and weakly expressed in AM-1 cells. Conversely, sFRP-2s was overexpressed. RUNX2 and C-MYC, …

Oxyspiruriasis caused by the bird eyeworm, Oxyspirura mansoni, a thelaziid nematode, in three species of pheasants, 3 Chrysolophus pictus (golden pheasant), 7 Lophura nycthemera (silver pheasant) and 9 Phasianus colchicus (common pheasant) in Zoo Negara Malaysia are reported. Birds with the disease were treated with a solution of 0.5 iodine or 0.5 lysol. Antistress powder for 4 days in water and non-strep vitamin powder in water was also provided. Control measures included removal of the cockroach intermediate host, Pycnoscelus surinamensis (Surinam cockroach) from the vicinity of the birds. The golden pheasant is a new host for O. mansoni in peninsular …

One of the disturbances experienced by the power system is increase in loading condition, which often led the system to no longer remains in secure operating region. When the power system is exposed to any kind of time delay and inaccessibility of control scheme, system may become inconsistent leading to uncontrolled condition. Under this condition, the main purpose of the operator is to execute control actions to get the system back into the secure operating regions. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device is one of the devices, which can be inserting to control power system stability improvement. This paper describes …

Background: One of the genes suggested to play an important role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BPD) is PDLIM5, which encodes LIM domain protein. Our main objective was to examine the effect of olanzapine treatment on PDLIM5 mRNA expression in the peripheral blood leukocytes of BPD patients. Methods: We measured the expression of PDLIM5 mRNA from 16 patients with BPD Type I after 0, 4, and 8 weeks of treatment with olanzapine using quantitative real-time PCR. The Young Mania Rating Scale was used to evaluate the severity of manic symptoms in BPD patients. We also compared PDLIM5 mRNA expression in …

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Pharmacists have been involved in providing comprehensive interventions to osteoporosis patients, but pharmaceutical care issues (PCIs) encountered during such interventions have not been well documented. Therefore, the aim of this study was to document PCIs encountered by post-menopausal osteoporotic women prescribed bisphosphonates. METHODS: A randomized controlled study was conducted from September 2005-February 2009 in the University Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia. This main intervention study measured the effects of pharmaceutical care on medication adherence, persistence, quality of life, knowledge and patient satisfaction. However, this manuscript is part of the main intervention study and focuses only on …
