Framing Non-Whites And Producing Second-Class Citizens In France And Portugal, Bernd Reiter Jan 2012

Framing Non-Whites And Producing Second-Class Citizens In France And Portugal, Bernd Reiter

Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications

The quality of contemporary democracies hinges on the breadth and depth of the citizenship regimes on which democracy ultimately rests. This article argues that, to assess citizenship, two important dimensions are of crucial interest, namely to what extent formal citizens are able to live and practice substantive citizenship roles and, secondly, how access to citizenship rights is used by different societal groups in order to defend privilege. Having conducted a comparative case study of Portugal and France, I now argue that political elites are contributing to a framing of non-whites as foreigners and immigrants because it serves their purpose and …

Wisdom And Conflict Resolution: A Possible Framework For Integrated Practice, Rachel Goldberg, Brian Blancke Jan 2012

Wisdom And Conflict Resolution: A Possible Framework For Integrated Practice, Rachel Goldberg, Brian Blancke

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

What would it look like to practice in a way that fully supported not only the cognitive and emotional intelligence of practitioners and parties, but their somatic and spiritual intelligence as well? Good practice is more than strong technique and knowledge. Good work depends on intention, presence, and a connection with parties. The authors argue that for interveners and parties, conflict involves all four dimensions of human understanding. Given the systemic nature of conflict intervention, the authors explore what multi-dimensional practice might look like, and propose a new multi-dimensional framework grounded in current work. The article includes practice examples showing …

Minimizing the transmission loss in power system is one of the important issues in power system research these days. Transmission loss can be reduced by installing reactive power compensation components. Installing the thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) in power system has been known to increase the voltage level in the system and hence reduce the system losses. This paper describes placement and sizing of FACTS devices based on Particle Swarm Optimization for minimization of transmission loss considering voltage profile and cost function. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is one of the artificial intelligent search approaches which have the potential in solving …

Quorum Quenching Revisited-From Signal Decays To Signalling Confusion, Kar Wai Hong, Chong Lek Koh, Choon Kook Sam, Wai Fong Yin, Kok Gan Chan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In a polymicrobial community, while some bacteria are communicating with neighboring cells (quorum sensing), others are interrupting the communication (quorum quenching), thus creating a constant arms race between intercellular communication. In the past decade, numerous quorum quenching enzymes have been found and initially thought to inactivate the signalling molecules. Though this is widely accepted, the actual roles of these quorum quenching enzymes are now being uncovered. Recent evidence extends the role of quorum quenching to detoxification or metabolism of signalling molecules as food and energy source; this includes "signalling confusion", a term coined in this paper to refer to the …

A series of binary tellurite based glasses (Bi(2)O(3))(x) (TeO(2))(100-) (x) was prepared by melt quenching method. The density, molar volume and refractive index increase when bismuth ions Bi(3+) increase, this is due to the increased polarization of the ions Bi(3+) and the enhanced formation of non-bridging oxygen (NBO). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results show the bonding of the glass sample and the optical band gap, E(opt) decreases while the refractive index increases when the ion Bi(3+) content increases.
