Variability Of Pennsylvanian-Permian Carbonate Associations And Implications For Nw Pangea Palaeogeography, East-Central British Columbia, Canada, K. D. Zubin-Stathopoulos, B. Beauchamp, V. I. Davydov, C. M. Henderson
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Different stages of Pennsylvanian-Permian carbonate sedimentation in east-central British Columbia record a complex history of changing environments influenced by evolving palaeogeography and climate. Newly recognized tectonically controlled features affected the distribution and variability of carbonate associations, providing new interpretations for this portion of the west coast of Pangea. Both a heterozoan (cool water) and photozoan (warm-water) association were identified on either side of a palaeogeographic high here informally termed “Tipinahokan Peninsula”. Cool water carbonates were located outboard, or to the west of this high, an area influenced by upwelling waters. Inboard of this high, a warm, protected sea developed, here …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A single mode fiber assembled with a specified length graded index multimode fiber as a collimator, which is used in common-path optical coherence tomography (CPOCT) is described in this paper. Compared with conventional collimator lens, this assembled fiber's structure possesses the advantages of small volume, easy to be fused or connected with other part of the CPOCT system. Furthermore, with this assembled structure and all fiber CPOCT system is constructed which has the potential to detect the internal bodily organs and tissues of human being. Numerical simulation and experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of this method. © (2012) …

The Art Of Legal Reasoning And The Angst Of Judging: Of Balls, Strikes, And Moments Of Truth, Timothy P. Terrell
The Art Of Legal Reasoning And The Angst Of Judging: Of Balls, Strikes, And Moments Of Truth, Timothy P. Terrell
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
An essay of only five short paragraphs published several years ago by the noted Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould about a controversial call by baseball umpire Babe Pinelli provides all the foundation necessary for a thorough investigation of the phenomenon of legal reasoning. The present article contrasts Gould’s analysis of a “strike” with the comment by then-Judge John Roberts at his Supreme Court confirmation hearings that he just wanted to “call [the] balls and strikes,” and through this exchange develops a new approach toward identifying—and teaching—the basic elements of sophisticated legal thinking. This article divides legal reasoning into four interrelated …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications
In this poster, we present an extension to our freely available KINARI-Web server to identify rigid and flexible regions of nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid complexes contained in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The goal is to explore the effect of DNA and RNA on the rigidity and stability of these structures. We also propose an approach for determining DNA rigidity based solely on sequence. Currently, only the rigidity of DNA molecules whose structures have been deposited in the PDB (approx. <4,000 files) can be analyzed. Once fine-tuned and validated, this new coordinate-free method for investigating DNA flexibility could be applied to the more than 135 million sequences in GenBank, and to nanostructure design.
Towards Biophysical Validation Of Constraint Modeling For Rigidity Analysis Of Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu
Towards Biophysical Validation Of Constraint Modeling For Rigidity Analysis Of Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Proteins are dynamic molecules, and understanding how they flex and bend provides fundamental insights to their functions. Methods such as molecular dynamics are computationally expensive, and can simulate protein motions on limited timescales. Rigidity analysis is an alternative method, in which a protein structure is analyzed to infer which portions of the molecule are flexible. To perform rigidity analysis, a model is first constructed in which various inter-atomic stabilizing interactions are modeled according to their strength. No detailed study has been conducted as to what is the most plausible, chemically validated modeling scheme. All previous implementations have relied on heuristics, …
Sinusoidal Endothelial Dysfunction In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease., Sandhya Lakshmi Gopalakrishnan
Sinusoidal Endothelial Dysfunction In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease., Sandhya Lakshmi Gopalakrishnan
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an asymptomatic increasingly common disorder that affects liver metabolism and is often the precursor for liver pathologies such as fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepato-cellular carcinoma. The liver sinusoidal endothelial cells act as a liver sieve by allowing macromolecules and chylomicrons to traverse through their fenestrations (sieve plates) to hepatocytes. Since liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) regulate serum derived macromolecular exposure to hepatocytes, we asked what role LSEC could play in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. To investigate the early events of NAFLD we used a rat model (Sprague-Dawley) in which animals were maintained on standard and …

Investigating The Tolerance Response Of Early Vegetative Stage Soybeans To Aphis Glycines Matsumura, Lia Da Silva Marchi
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The objectives of this research were to evaluate the impact of soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) feeding on the yield response of V1, V3, and R1 KS4202 soybean plants and examine the effect of soybean aphid feeding on peroxidase activity in V1 and V3 KS4202 plants. KS4202 plants infested during the early vegetative stages (VC, VE and V1) were identified as highly susceptible based upon plant damage and stunting of the plants. In contrast, V3, V4, and V5 stage KS4202 soybeans were classified as moderately resistant. In the yield response study, V1, V3 and R1 plants had aphid numbers …

Late Embryogenesis Abundant Proteins Protect Human Hepatoma Cells During Acute Desiccation., Shumin Li, Nilay Chakraborty, Apurva Borcar, Michael Menze, Mehmet Toner, Steven Hand
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Expression of late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins is highly correlated with desiccation tolerance in anhydrobiotic animals, selected land plants, and bacteria. Genes encoding two LEA proteins, one localized to the cytoplasm/nucleus (AfrLEA2) and one targeted to mitochondria (AfrLEA3m), were stably transfected into human HepG2 cells. A trehalose transporterwas used for intracellular loading of this disaccharide. Cellswere rapidly and uniformly desiccated to low water content (< 0.12 g H2O/g dry weight) with a recently developed spin-drying technique. Immediately on rehydration, control cells without LEA proteins or trehalose exhibited 0% membrane integrity, comparedwith 98% in cells loaded with trehalose and expressing AfrLEA2 or AfrLEA3m; surprisingly, AfrLEA3m without trehalose conferred 94% protection. Cell proliferation across 7 d showed an 18-fold increase for cells dried with AfrLEA3m and trehalose, compared with 27-fold for nondried controls. LEA proteins dramatically enhance desiccation tolerance in mammalian cells and offer the opportunity for engineering biostability in the dried state.
The ‘Slow-Growth-High-Mortality’ Hypothesis: How Plant Species, Leaf Quality, And The Third Trophic Level Contribute To The Mortality Of Two Common Leaf-Tying Microlepidopteran Herbivores, Kirk Lee Barnett
Theses
I investigated how the survivorship, abundance, and development of two common microlepidoteran leaf-tiers on four species of oak change in response to leaf quality and exposure to the third trophic level, and used those results to validate predictions under the slow-growth-high-mortality hypothesis. In chapter 1, I begin with a review of the literature by examining the components of plant traits that contribute to the success of insect herbivores and how plants can alter both defensive compounds and nutritional quality in order to deter herbivory. I then describe how changes in leaf quality and defense can be overcome by insect herbivores, …

Rorα, A Potential Tumor Suppressor And Therapeutic Target Of Breast Cancer, Jun Du, Ren Xu
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
The function of the nuclear receptor (NR) in breast cancer progression has been investigated for decades. The majority of the nuclear receptors have well characterized natural ligands, but a few of them are orphan receptors for which no ligand has been identified. RORα, one member of the retinoid orphan nuclear receptor (ROR) subfamily of orphan receptors, regulates various cellular and pathological activities. RORα is commonly down-regulated and/or hypoactivated in breast cancer compared to normal mammary tissue. Expression of RORα suppresses malignant phenotypes in breast cancer cells, in vitro and in vivo. Activity of RORα can be categorized into the …

The Doomed Union: Thomas Hardy's Pessimism Toward Marriage, Anglicanism, And Society, Christine Mays
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate Thomas Hardy’s pessimism by examining his life and to display how three of his novels, Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and Jude the Obscure reflect actual events, relationships, and social issues in Hardy’s life. Hardy’s fatalism began to manifest itself in his early childhood, as he was the result of an unplanned pregnancy, and then later in his youth, when his family could not afford to fund a full education. As he grew into adulthood, Hardy began to feel acutely the line drawn between him and those of …

Preliminary Checklist Of Lichens Reported From Wyoming, Dorothy E. Tuthill
Preliminary Checklist Of Lichens Reported From Wyoming, Dorothy E. Tuthill
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Although lichens are a common feature in Wyoming, there has been no attempt to compile a statewide list of species since 1900. A number of surveys have been conducted in the state, especially in Yellowstone National Park and other federally managed parks and forests, though little attention has been given to lower-elevation regions of the state. The literature search conducted for this project yielded nearly 800 species names, which number was reduced to 608 currently accepted taxa. Collection locations and references are provided for each taxon, as are global ranks (conservation status, from NatureServe.org), and a brief discussion of some …

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is one of the most destructive pests of corn in North America and is currently invading Europe. The two major invasive outbreaks of rootworm in Europe have occurred, in North-West Italy and in Central and South-Eastern Europe. These two outbreaks originated from independent introductions from North America. Secondary contact probably occurred in North Italy between these two outbreaks, in 2008. We used 13 microsatellite markers to conduct a population genetics study, to demonstrate that this geographic contact resulted in a zone of admixture in the Italian region of Veneto. We show …

The short allele of the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) moderates the effects of stress on vulnerability to mood and anxiety disorders. The mechanism by which this occurs may relate to differential sensitivity to stressful life events. Here we explored whether 5- HTTLPR and sex affected behavioral responses to repeated maternal separation in infant rhesus macaques. Behaviors were collected during the acute (Day 1) and the chronic (Days 2–4) phases of the separation, and the effects of duration of separation (acute vs. chronic), genotype (long/long vs. short allele), and sex (male vs. female) on behavioral responses were analyzed across …

Cooking Protestors Alive: The Excessive-Force Implications Of The Active Denial System, Brad Turner
Cooking Protestors Alive: The Excessive-Force Implications Of The Active Denial System, Brad Turner
Duke Law & Technology Review
The Active Denial System (ADS) is unlike any other nonviolent weapon: instead of incapacitating its targets, it forces them to flee, and it does so without being seen or heard. Though it is a promising new crowd-control tool for law-enforcement, excessive-force claims involving the ADS will create a Fourth Amendment jurisprudential paradox. Moreover, the resolution of that paradox could undermine other constitutional principles—like equality, fairness, and free speech. Ultimately, the ADS serves as a warning that without legislation, American jurisprudence may not be ready for the next generation of law-enforcement technology and the novel excessive-force claims sure to follow.
