Explaining The Longitudinal Association Between Puberty And Depression: Sex Differences In The Mediating Effects Of Peer Stress, Colleen S. Conley, Karen D. Rudolph, Fred B. Bryant Jan 2012

Explaining The Longitudinal Association Between Puberty And Depression: Sex Differences In The Mediating Effects Of Peer Stress, Colleen S. Conley, Karen D. Rudolph, Fred B. Bryant

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This research investigated whether exposure to peer stress serves as one pathway through which pubertal development contributes to depression over time, differentially for girls and boys. Youth (N = 149; 9.6–14.8 years) and their caregivers provided information at two waves, 1 year apart, on puberty (Wave 1), peer stress (occurring between Waves 1 and 2), and depression (Waves 1 and 2). Structural equation modeling analyses examined sex differences in the extent to which peer stress mediated the impact of pubertal status and timing on subsequent depression (i.e., tests of moderated mediation). Significant sex-moderated mediation was found for both pubertal status …

Statistics And Decision Making As Applied To Printing Conformity Assessment, Robert Chung, Changyong Feng, Ping-Hsu Chen Jan 2012

Statistics And Decision Making As Applied To Printing Conformity Assessment, Robert Chung, Changyong Feng, Ping-Hsu Chen

Books

Conformity assessment, a relatively new activity in the printing industry, is an attestation that specified requirements relating to a product or process have been fulfilled. Printing certification bodies assess printing conformity according to sampling, aim points, tolerances, and decision-making rules that are stipulated by printing standards. However, do we know if: sampling is too large or too small; normative requirements are too many or too few; tolerances are set too tightly or too loosely; and the pass/fail criterion is too stringent or too relaxed? Moreover, how do these factors impact the passing probability of a sample, a job, and the …

Law's Slow Violence: A Review Of Rob Nixon's "Slow Violence And The Environmentalism Of The Poor" (Hup, 2010), Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2012

Law's Slow Violence: A Review Of Rob Nixon's "Slow Violence And The Environmentalism Of The Poor" (Hup, 2010), Dayna Nadine Scott

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

With gripping urgency, Rob Nixon’s book "Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor" seeks to reveal the “occluded relationships” between transnational economic actors and the things that tie them to particular places, such as labour, land, resources and commodity dynamics. He brings into view the bodies caught in the middle – those that have been raced and erased, made invisible, and wiped away -- by exposing the violence perpetrated against them across time and space. Nixon’s work is a broad synthesis of a seemingly disparate set of literatures in post-colonial studies, eco-criticism and literary studies. His arresting narrative engages …

Unbundling The Regime Complex: The Effects Of Private Authority, Graeme Auld, Jessica F. Green Jan 2012

Unbundling The Regime Complex: The Effects Of Private Authority, Graeme Auld, Jessica F. Green

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

There is a commonly held view that forms of private regulation and governance arise when intergovernmental cooperation fails. While we do not dispute that this is sometimes the case, this paper focuses on the longer-term effects of private authority – namely, the ways that public and private authority interact over time. We argue that a more complete understanding of regime complexity must include private authority, which we define as situations in which non-state actors make rules or set standards that other actors in world politics adopt, and its interactions with public authority. Interactions among public and private actors occur in …

Process Vs. Performance Standards For Sustainable Meeting And Event Management, Andrew S. Walker Jan 2012

Process Vs. Performance Standards For Sustainable Meeting And Event Management, Andrew S. Walker

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper examines two emerging voluntary industry standards – the process-based ISO 20121 Event sustainability management systems and the performance-based APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standard – and examines whether they can complement, rather than compete with, each other to provide a more comprehensive approach to the complex task of managing and measuring sustainability within meetings and events. A framework for analysis was developed through examining the academic literature on competition between process and performance-based sustainability standards within the forestry sector where several internationally-recognized standards have interacted in the marketplace for over a decade. Three criteria – legitimacy, accountability and effectiveness …

Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Child Protection, Shelley M. Kierstead Jan 2012

Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Child Protection, Shelley M. Kierstead

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

An intricate weave of public/private, legal/emotional, and inter-disciplinary elements make child protection law capable of attracting rich analyses from a therapeutic jurisprudence perspective. This article considers avenues that professionals working within the child welfare system can adopt to facilitate the emotional well-being of the parties involved while respecting the legal system values that apply to the regime. It calls for a stronger understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the array of professionals regularly involved in child protection matters, and better communication amongst these professionals so that they do not inadvertently end up working at cross purposes. Finally, the work offers …

Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2012

Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This article attempts to bridge two discourses — corporate governance and contract governance. Regarding the latter, a group of scholars has recently set out to develop a more comprehensive research agenda to explore the governance dimensions of contractual relations, highlighting the potential of contract theory to develop a more encompassing theory of social and economic transactions. While a renewed interest in the contribution of economic theory for a concept of contract governance drives one dimension of this research, another part of this undertaking has been to move contract theory closer to theories of social organization. Here, these scholars emphasize the …

Emerging Private Governance: The Challenges Of Choosing A Policy Focus, Graeme Auld Jan 2012

Emerging Private Governance: The Challenges Of Choosing A Policy Focus, Graeme Auld

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Across sectors of the global economy, private governance has emerged as a new instrument for addressing pressing social and environmental problems. Although better suited for tackling the challenge of reaching agreements among states to address problems transcending national borders, these initiatives create new boundaries based on what problems they choose to focus on and which actors they choose to regulate – that is, the different policy foci of individual programs. Specialization is not inherently problematic. Private governance can focus attention on the problems of a single-issue area and build capacity among actors to resolve its problems, but equally a particular …

Problems And Variations In Hospitality Administration Programs Across Illinois, Gina Defano

Honors Capstones

The title of my project is Problems and Variations in Hospitality Administration Programs Across Illinois. The purpose of this study is to determine the strengths and weaknesses of Northern Illinois University’s (NIU) Hospitality Administration program in comparison to the other hospitality programs in Illinois. The goal of this study is to find out what is missing from our program. What do stronger programs have that we don’t? Why is our enrollment not as high as we would like it to be? Are other programs offering more beneficial courses? To answer these questions, I researched the 40 hospitality programs in Illinois. …

Role Of Hoga And Sskb Protein Kinases In Mycotoxin Production In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus Nidulans, Lauren Jurkowski Jan 2012

Role Of Hoga And Sskb Protein Kinases In Mycotoxin Production In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus Nidulans, Lauren Jurkowski

Honors Capstones

Aspergillus nidulans is a filamentous fungus that is often used as a model organism in genetics and molecular biology studies. The species has a well- characterized life-cycle and its genome has been sequenced. Aspergillus species are commonly found in the environment. Some species can cause health problems in humans. Some Aspergillus species produce aflatoxin, a toxic compound that causes acute necrosis, cirrhosis, and carcinoma of the liver in some animal species and can potentially cause similar symptoms in humans (Center for Integrated Fungal Research, 2005). A. nidulans produces the carcinogenic mycotoxin sterigmatocystin (ST), a precursor in the aflatoxin biosynthetic pathway …

Evaluation Of Rockfish Abundance In Untrawlable Habitat: Combining Acoustic And Complementary Sampling Tools, Darin Jones, Christopher D. Wilson, Alex De Robertis, Chris Rooper, Thomas C. Weber, John L. Butler Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Rockfish Abundance In Untrawlable Habitat: Combining Acoustic And Complementary Sampling Tools, Darin Jones, Christopher D. Wilson, Alex De Robertis, Chris Rooper, Thomas C. Weber, John L. Butler

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

—Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) are an important component of North Pacific marine ecosystems and commercial fisheries. Because the rocky, high-relief substrate that rockfishes often inhabit is inaccessible to standard survey trawls, population abundance assessments for many rockfish species are difficult. As part of a large study to classify substrate and compare complementary sampling tools, we investigated the feasibility of using an acoustic survey in conjunction with a lowered stereo-video camera, a remotely operated vehicle, and a modified bottom trawl to estimate rockfish biomass in untrawlable habitat. The Snakehead Bank south of Kodiak Island, Alaska, was surveyed repeatedly over 4 days and …

Stability Through Chaos : The Use Of Psychiatry As A Tool Of Social Control Of Colonial Malaya, 1880-1917, Joann Losavio

Ideas have travelled a convoluted route throughout history, most paths remaining obscured until historical research untangles them. In Malaysia, the colonizing political machinations of the British from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century are often credited as a single force facilitated a wholesale movement of Eurocentric ideology into the region. It is taken as if Colonialism was a monolithic weapon which obliterated native ideology in a single swipe. Such a generalization has omitted the vital nuances and masked the actual path of history. This historical study revealed that one way in which European though merged into modern Malaysian ideology was an …

Molecular And Biochemical Characterization Of Oleate- And Glycerol-3-Phosphate-Regulated Signaling In Plants, Mihir Kumar Mandal Jan 2012

Molecular And Biochemical Characterization Of Oleate- And Glycerol-3-Phosphate-Regulated Signaling In Plants, Mihir Kumar Mandal

Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology

Oleic acid (18:1), a monounsaturated fatty acid (FA), is synthesized upon desaturation of stearic acid (18:0) and this reaction is catalyzed by the plastidal enzyme stearoyl-acyl carrier protein-desaturase (SACPD). A mutation in the SSI2/FAB2 encoded SACPD lowers 18:1 levels, which correlates with induction of various resistance (R) genes and increased resistance to pathogens. Genetic and molecular studies have identified several suppressors of ssi2 which restore altered defense signaling either by normalizing 18:1 levels or by affecting function(s) of a downstream component. Characterization of one such ssi2 suppressor mutant showed that it is required downstream of low 18:1-mediated constitutive …

Hormonal And Pheromonal Effects Of 20-Hydroxyecdysone In The American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Michael W. Sipala Jan 2012

Hormonal And Pheromonal Effects Of 20-Hydroxyecdysone In The American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Michael W. Sipala

Open Access Dissertations

20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), the active principle of the molting hormone in the American lobster has significant effects on the animals’ agonistic behavior and has been shown to influence the outcome of agonistic interactions. Animals injected with 20E are significantly more aggressive than saline-injected control animals, and premolt animals, which have high circulating levels of 20E in their hemolymph, are more successful than intermolt animals in agonistic interactions. 20E has been shown to act as an internal modulator of neuromuscular physiology: there is an increase in the amplitude of excitatory post-synaptic potentials in the claw opener muscle and a decrease of them …

Newer Agents In Antiplatelet Therapy: A Review., Jennifer Yeung, Michael Holinstat Jan 2012

Newer Agents In Antiplatelet Therapy: A Review., Jennifer Yeung, Michael Holinstat

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Antiplatelet therapy remains the mainstay in preventing aberrant platelet activation in pathophysiological conditions such as myocardial infarction, ischemia, and stroke. Although there has been significant advancement in antiplatelet therapeutic approaches, aspirin still remains the gold standard treatment in the clinical setting. Limitations in safety, efficacy, and tolerability have precluded many of the antiplatelet inhibitors from use in patients. Unforeseen incidences of increased bleeding risk and recurrent arterial thrombosis observed in patients have hampered the development of superior next generation antiplatelet therapies. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles have also limited the effectiveness of a number of antiplatelet inhibitors currently in use …

Cam Kinase Control Of Akt And Lncap Cell Survival, John M. Schmitt, Samantha Smith, Brendon Hart, Luke Fletcher Jan 2012

Cam Kinase Control Of Akt And Lncap Cell Survival, John M. Schmitt, Samantha Smith, Brendon Hart, Luke Fletcher

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

AKT and its substrate BAD have been shown to promote prostate cancer cell survival. Agonists, such as carbachol, and hormones that increase intracellular calcium concentration can activate AKT leading to cancer cell survival. The LNCaP prostate cancer cells express the carbacholsensitive M3-subtype of G protein-coupled receptors that cause increases in intracellular calcium and activate the family of Ca2þ/calmodulindependent protein kinases (CaM Ks). One type of CaM Kinase, CaM Kinase Kinase (CaM KK), phosphorylates several substrates including AKT on threonine 308. AKT phosphorylation and activation enhances cell survival through phosphorylation of BAD protein and the subsequent blockade of caspase activation. Our …

Estrogen And Vitamin D Control Of Transcription In Mcf-7 Cells, John M. Schmitt, N. Magill Jan 2012

Estrogen And Vitamin D Control Of Transcription In Mcf-7 Cells, John M. Schmitt, N. Magill

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Abstract The Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase (ERK) is part of a key, signaling pathway that regulates both transcription and translation in many cell types. Increases in intracellular calcium levels results in the CaM Kinase-dependent activation of ERK and cell growth in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. ERK has also been shown to play a role in the regulation of MCF-7 cell proliferation through control of downstream transcription factors including Elk-1. The hormone, Vitamin D has been suggested to play an inhibitory role on cancer cells by blocking ERK activation. Our goal was to evaluate the ability of E2 to activate Elk-1, through …

Estrogen Receptor Activation Of Cam Kinase I And Erk, John M. Schmitt, Mikayla S. Todd Jan 2012

Estrogen Receptor Activation Of Cam Kinase I And Erk, John M. Schmitt, Mikayla S. Todd

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Cell growth and development is regulated by the cell signaling second messenger, calcium, that regulates key enzymes and genes in cells including the Calcium/Calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaM Ks) and their downstream target ERK. In particular, CaM KK and its substrate CaM KI promote ERK and Elk-1 activation in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Estrogen (E2) may utilize CaM KK and ERK to promote breast cancer cell proliferation, however it is unclear which E2 receptor promotes cell proliferation through CaM Ks. Estrogen is a ligand for estrogen receptors (ER) of the alpha(α) and beta(β) forms, as well as G protein-coupled receptor 30 …
