Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins Jan 2012

Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The motivation for this work is the need to remove waste heat from laser diodes and high speed transistors in processes which are exponentially increasing past 1 kW/cm2 as anticipated by Moore's Law. The hypothesis guiding the work is that ultrasonic insonation of micro coolers employed to dissipate these heat loads can improve heat removal. It is thought that the mechanism promoting the benefit is enhancement of the ability of the coolant to remove latent heat in two-phase operation by managing entrained bubble size near the cooler's exit so as to forestall flow reduction or blockage caused by large bubbles, …

Interviews with food truck owners, a food truck fabricator and a blogger for DenverStreetFood.com, explore the nature of the movement and how its existence creates a feel of community and culture within the city. The evolution of street food history and the influence of new technology are also …

Estradiol Modulation Of Calcium Dynamics In Pituitary Mmq Lactotroph Cells, Monika Pauckova Jan 2012

Estradiol Modulation Of Calcium Dynamics In Pituitary Mmq Lactotroph Cells, Monika Pauckova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pituitary lactotrophs are excitable cells that exhibit spontaneous, calcium influx triggering prolactin (PRL) secretion to stimulate lactation. Lactotrophs express estrogen receptors (ER) and are a well established estrogen-responsive cell system. 17B-estradiol (E2) is known to directly affect lactotrophs by increasing PRL transcription and biosynthesis, intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and PRL secretion. This study demonstrates that the MMQ clonal cell line, isolated from the 7315a rat pituitary tumor, is a model lactotroph cell line that is E2-responsive. Spontaneous and evoked Ca2+ transients were especially sensitive to L-type channel block, but not affected by block of omega-conotoxin-GVIA-sensitive CaV channels or TTX-sensitive voltage-gated …

Pomc Is Expressed In Pancreatic Alpha Cells, Samia M.M Farrara Jan 2012

Pomc Is Expressed In Pancreatic Alpha Cells, Samia M.M Farrara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pancreatic alpha cells secrete glucagon to increase blood glucose during hypoglycemia. Currently, the mechanisms that initiate glucagon secretion are not well understood. This study investigates the expression of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), a potent regulator of glucagon secretion, in alpha cells.

Insulin tolerance tests in mice lacking the POMC gene showed a correlation between alpha MSH, and glucagon secretion from alpha cells (Hochgeschwender et al. 2003). Results from a previous study showed that the POMC product, melanocortin á-MSH, acts through a melanocortin receptor 4 (MC4R) at the surface of the alpha cells to trigger the release of glucagon [Angleson, unpublished data, Lumsden …

Nesting In The Clouds: Evaluating And Predicting Sea Turtle Nesting Beach Parameters From Lidar Data, Kristina H. Yamamoto Jan 2012

Nesting In The Clouds: Evaluating And Predicting Sea Turtle Nesting Beach Parameters From Lidar Data, Kristina H. Yamamoto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans' desire for knowledge regarding animal species and their interactions with the natural world have spurred centuries of studies. The relatively new development of remote sensing systems using satellite or aircraft-borne sensors has opened up a wide field of research, which unfortunately largely remains dependent on coarse-scale image spatial resolution, particularly for habitat modeling. For habitat-specialized species, such data may not be sufficient to successfully capture the nuances of their preferred areas. Of particular concern are those species for which topographic feature attributes are a main limiting factor for habitat use. Coarse spatial resolution data can smooth over details that …

Matching Educational Interventions To Behavioral Phenotypes: Spatial Temporal Math As A Mathematics Achievement Intervention For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Erin Slason Grell Jan 2012

Matching Educational Interventions To Behavioral Phenotypes: Spatial Temporal Math As A Mathematics Achievement Intervention For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Erin Slason Grell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), a rapidly growing group of neurodevelopmental disorders, affect nearly all aspects of development. The knowledge base of ASDs has increased significantly over the past half century due to translational research models (Rutter, 1999). Basic science and applied clinical work have informed research in a bi-directional manner. Through these models, much is now known about the language, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties associated with ASDs. However, autism research would benefit from further delineation of the differences between ASD types through the development of behavioral phenotypes. Behavioral phenotypes are expressions of particular aspects of disorders that may aid in …

Morphogenetic And Developmental Functions Of The Aspergillus Nidulans Homologues Of The Yeast Bud Site Selection Proteins Bud4 And Axl2, Haoyu Si, William R. Rittenour, Kaimei Xu, Mark Nicksarlian, Ana M. Calvo, Steven D. Harris Jan 2012

Morphogenetic And Developmental Functions Of The Aspergillus Nidulans Homologues Of The Yeast Bud Site Selection Proteins Bud4 And Axl2, Haoyu Si, William R. Rittenour, Kaimei Xu, Mark Nicksarlian, Ana M. Calvo, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The yeast bud site selection system represents a paradigm for understanding how fungal cells regulate the formation of a polarity axis. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Bud4 and Axl2 are components of the axial bud site marker. To address the possibility that these proteins regulate cellular morphogenesis in filamentous fungi, we have characterized homologues of Bud4 and Axl2 in Aspergillus nidulans. Our results show that Bud4 is involved in septum formation in both hyphae and developing conidiophores. Whereas Axl2 appears to have no obvious role in hyphal growth, it is required for the regulation of phialide morphogenesis during conidiation. In …

Direct Fitness Correlates And Thermal Consequences Of Facultative Aggregation In A Desert Lizard, Alison R. Davis Rabosky, Ammon Corl, Heather E.M. Liwanag, Yann Surget-Groba, Barry Sinervo Jan 2012

Direct Fitness Correlates And Thermal Consequences Of Facultative Aggregation In A Desert Lizard, Alison R. Davis Rabosky, Ammon Corl, Heather E.M. Liwanag, Yann Surget-Groba, Barry Sinervo

Biology Faculty Publications

Social aggregation is a common behavioral phenomenon thought to evolve through adaptive benefits to group living. Comparing fitness differences between aggregated and solitary individuals in nature – necessary to infer an evolutionary benefit to living in groups – has proven difficult because communally-living species tend to be obligately social and behaviorally complex. However, these differences and the mechanisms driving them are critical to understanding how solitary individuals transition to group living, as well as how and why nascent social systems change over time. Here we demonstrate that facultative aggregation in a reptile (the Desert Night Lizard, Xantusia vigilis) confers …

Nature Of Science: Curriculum Unit For The 6th Grade Classroom, Reagan Denise Boeset Jan 2012

Nature Of Science: Curriculum Unit For The 6th Grade Classroom, Reagan Denise Boeset

Graduate Research Papers

Having a basic knowledge of scientific principles is no longer a luxury but, in today's complex world, a necessity. While Americans are holding their own, they are not even close to where they should be says Jon Miller of Michigan State University. Miller (2007) states in Science Daily that only 28% of American adults currently qualify as scientifically literate (as cited in Michigan State University, 2007, para 5). With the pace of technological advancement as well as our increased reliance on technology, there should be no debate over the need for scientific literacy. There is a need for our society …

Sensitivity Of Noncovalent Bonds To Intermolecular Separation: Hydrogen, Halogen, Chalcogen, And Pnicogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner Jan 2012

Sensitivity Of Noncovalent Bonds To Intermolecular Separation: Hydrogen, Halogen, Chalcogen, And Pnicogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

It is well known that noncovalent bonds are weakened when stretched from their equilibrium intermolecular separation. Quantum chemical calculations are used to examine and compare the sensitivity to stretches of hydrogen, halogen, chalcogen, and pnicogen bonds. NH3 was taken as the universal electron donor, paired with HOH and FH in H-bonds, as well as with FPH2, FSH, and FCl. Even though the binding energies span a wide range, stretching the intermolecular separation by 1 Å cuts this quantity by the same proportion, roughly in half, for each system. Taking the sum of van der Waals radii as an arbitrary cutoff, …

Analysis Of Periodontal Data Using Circular Statistics, Samopriyo Maitra, Thomas M. Braun Jan 2012

Analysis Of Periodontal Data Using Circular Statistics, Samopriyo Maitra, Thomas M. Braun

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Periodontal disease is a common cause of tooth loss in adults. The severity of periodontal disease is usually quantified based upon the magnitudes of several tooth-level clinical parameters, the most common of which is clinical attachment level (CAL). Re- cent clinical studies have presented data on the distribution of periodontal disease in hopes of providing information for localized treatments that can reduce the prevalence of periodontal disease. However, these findings have been descriptive without consid- eration of statistical modeling for estimation and inference. To this end, we visualize the mouth as a circle and the teeth as points located on …

College of Health and Human Services

DNA and RNA micro- and nanoparticles are increasingly being used for gene and siRNA drug delivery and a variety of other applications in bionanotechnology. On the nanoscale, these entities represent unique challenges from a physicochemical characterization perspective. Here, nucleic acid conjugates with protamine and gold nanoparticles (GNP) were characterized comparatively in the nanorange of concentration by UV/Vis NanoDrop spectroscopy, fluorimetry, and gel electrophoresis. Given the intense interest in splice-site switching oligomers (SSOs), we utilized a human tumor cell culture system (HeLa pLuc-705), in which SSO-directed splicing repair upregulates luciferase expression, in order to investigate bioactivity of the bionanoconjugates. Process parameters …
