Adaptive Harvest Management: 2012 Hunting Season
Adaptive Harvest Management: 2012 Hunting Season
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States (Blohm 1989). This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2012 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest management …

Snag Benchmarks And Treatment Options For Mixed-Pine Forest Restoration In Eastern Upper Michigan, R. Gregory Corace Iii, Anna T. Stout, P. Charles Goebel, David M. Hix
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Snags (dead-standing trees) are biological legacies that remain after disturbances in forests. We enhanced the ecological underpinnings of snag management within the context of mixed-pine forest restoration in the northern Lake States by quantifying characteristics of live trees and snags within eighty-five 500-m2 plots at Seney National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in eastern Upper Michigan. Study plots represented reference conditions (i.e. no past harvesting, relatively unaltered fire regime) and altered (i.e. harvested, altered fire regime) conditions. We also compared three treatments for creating snags from live trees. Snags were found in 87% of the reference plots and 85% of the altered …
Conservation Strategy For The New England Cottontail (Sylvilagus Transitionalis), Steven Fuller, Anthony Tur
Conservation Strategy For The New England Cottontail (Sylvilagus Transitionalis), Steven Fuller, Anthony Tur
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The New England cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus transitionalis), abbreviated as NEC, is the only rabbit native to the northeastern United States from the Hudson River Valley of New York eastward. The NEC is currently threatened by the loss of its habitat through development and forest succession. It may also be imperiled by encroachment into its range by the introduced eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus), which may compete with NEC and seems more able to use diverse and fragmented habitats and avoid predators.
Biologists do not believe that NEC interbreed with the eastern cottontail; NEC and eastern cottontail hybrids, …

Estimating Statistical Characteristics Of Lognormal And Delta-Lognormal Distributions Under Interval Uncertainty: Algorithms And Computational Complexity, Nitaya Buntao, Sa-Aat Niwitpong, Vladik Kreinovich
Estimating Statistical Characteristics Of Lognormal And Delta-Lognormal Distributions Under Interval Uncertainty: Algorithms And Computational Complexity, Nitaya Buntao, Sa-Aat Niwitpong, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional statistical estimates S(x1, ..., xn) for different statistical characteristics S (such as mean, variance, etc.) implicitly assume that we know the sample values x1, ..., xn exactly. In practice, the sample values Xi come from measurements and are, therefore, in general, different from the actual (unknown) values xi of the corresponding quantities. Sometimes, we know the probabilities of different values of the measurement error di = Xi - xi, but often, the only information that we have about the measurement error is the upper bound Di …

Rapid, Large-Scale Production Of Full-Length, Human-Like Monoclonal Antibodies, Christopher M. Warner
Rapid, Large-Scale Production Of Full-Length, Human-Like Monoclonal Antibodies, Christopher M. Warner
KGI Theses and Dissertations
Current recombinant protein production systems require several months to develop. Existing systems fail to provide timely, flexible, and cost-effective therapies to protect against emergency mass-casualty infections or poisonings. As the identity of many new biological threat agents are unlikely to be known in advance, pre-emptive manufacturing and stockpiling of countermeasures cannot be performed. Preparedness for a biological catastrophe requires a radical solution to replace the current slow scale-up and manufacture of lifesaving medical countermeasures. Subunit vaccines and antibody fragments may be produced in bacteria, yeast, plant or insect cells. However, generation of full-length, human like glycosylated antibodies requires mammalian cell …

Too Rough A Justice: The Ethiopia-Eritrea Claims Commission And Civil Liability For Claims For Rape Under International Law, Ryan S. Lincoln
Articles
The developments in international law prohibiting rape during armed conflict have grown at a rapid pace in recent decades. Whereas rape had long been considered an inevitable by-product of armed conflict, evolution in international humanitarian law (IHL) has relegated this conception mostly to the past. The work of international criminal tribunals has been at the forefront of this change, developing the specific elements of the international crime of rape, and helping to change the perception of rape in international law violations of IHL, however also give rise to civil liability Despite the advances with respect to rape made in the …

Pain As Fact And Heuristic: How Pain Neuroimaging Illuminates Moral Dimensions Of Law, Amanda C. Pustilnik
Pain As Fact And Heuristic: How Pain Neuroimaging Illuminates Moral Dimensions Of Law, Amanda C. Pustilnik
Faculty Scholarship
Legal statuses, prohibitions, and protections often turn on the presence and degree of physical pain. In legal domains ranging from tort to torture, pain and its degree do important definitional work by delimiting boundaries of lawfulness and of entitlements. The omnipresence of pain in law suggests that the law embodies an intuition about the ontological primacy of pain. Yet, for all the work done by pain as a term in legal texts and practice, it has had a confounding lack of external verifiability. As with other subjective states, we have been able to impute pain’s presence but have not been …

Resource Discovery Tools: Supporting Serendipity, Tammera M. Race
DLTS Faculty Publications
Serendipity, the accidental discovery of something useful, plays an important role in discovery and the acquisition of new knowledge. The process and role of serendipity varies across disciplines. As library collections have become increasingly digital faculty lament the loss of serendipity of browsing library stacks. Resource discovery tools may have features that support serendipity as part of information seeking. A comparison of four commercial Web-scale discovery tools, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) WorldCat® Local1, Serials Solution2® Summon3™, ExLibris4® Primo Central5™, and EBSCO Discovery Services (EDS)6™, links product features to characteristics that support serendipitous discovery. However, having such features is only …

The Relationship Between Middle School Students' Perceptions Of Physical Activity, Student Engagement, And Academic Achievement, Jeremy D. Moretti
The Relationship Between Middle School Students' Perceptions Of Physical Activity, Student Engagement, And Academic Achievement, Jeremy D. Moretti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity is important, and many adolescents are not meeting the recommendation that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week (CDC, 2011). Physical inactivity among middle school students is on the rise and may be a contributing factor to a decline in academic performance. Prior research has focused primarily on bodily health; however, growing evidence supports the benefits of physical activity for academic achievement (Chomitz et al., 2009). This study examined the relationship between middle school students' perceptions of physical activity and student engagement they relate to academic achievement among 179 middle …
Dopamine-Beta-Hydroxylase And Norepinephrine Transporter Immunoreactivity In Rat Taste Buds, Jenna Ashley Walton
Dopamine-Beta-Hydroxylase And Norepinephrine Transporter Immunoreactivity In Rat Taste Buds, Jenna Ashley Walton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of the handful of neurotransmitters modulating taste response, norepinephrine (NE) may be the least understood. Although the physiological role of NE has been tested, it is still unclear whether the rat taste bud may serve as an endogenous source of neurotransmitter or if it must be taken up from outside the taste bud. Immunocytochemical analysis of DBH has shown that DBH–LIR is present in taste cells of the rat circumvallate papillae. Specifically, DBH–LIR is present in a subset of Type II taste cells. Nearly all (98%) DBH–LIR cells express PLCβ2–LIR, and about half (41%) of PLCβ2–LIR cells express DBH–LIR. DBH–LIR …

Feature-Based Neuro-Symbolic Networks For Global Diagnostics, Tracy Lynn Schantz
Feature-Based Neuro-Symbolic Networks For Global Diagnostics, Tracy Lynn Schantz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Engineered system diagnostics have been researched over the years with many successful results. From transportation systems to office technologies, many have been equipped with self-diagnostic capabilities and are called Smart Machines. In spite of these advances, current diagnostic systems are driven by direct sensory information without much concern for patterns of the system behavior or features associated with them. For large-scale systems with complex dynamics, global as well as local diagnostics become of great importance, where sensory information is used as input for the local diagnostics, and patterns of behavior or features are utilized for global diagnostics.
The main objective …
