Metabolic Rate Regulates L1 Longevity In C. Elegans, Inhwan Lee, Amber Hendrix, Jeongho Kim, Jennifer Yoshimoto, Young-Jai You

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Publications

Animals have to cope with starvation. The molecular mechanisms by which animals survive long-term starvation, however, are not clearly understood. When they hatch without food, C. elegans arrests development at the first larval stage (L1) and survives more than two weeks. Here we show that the survival span of arrested L1s, which we call L1 longevity, is a starvation response regulated by metabolic rate during starvation. A high rate of metabolism shortens the L1 survival span, whereas a low rate of metabolism lengthens it. The longer worms are starved, the slower they grow once they are fed, suggesting that L1 …

Using Conservation Management Agreements To Secure Postrecovery Perpetuation Of Conservation-Reliant Species: The Kirtland's Warbler As A Case Study, Dale Goble Jan 2012

Using Conservation Management Agreements To Secure Postrecovery Perpetuation Of Conservation-Reliant Species: The Kirtland's Warbler As A Case Study, Dale Goble

Articles

Kirtland’s warbler is one of many conservation-reliant species listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This species has met recovery goals, but removing it from the protections of the ESA is problematic because of its reliance on ongoing conservation. We define conservation management agreements (CMAs) and describe how they may provide a mechanism to protect conservation-reliant species after delisting. We suggest that CMAs should include four major elements: (1) a conservation partnership capable of implementing management actions at conservation-relevant scales, (2) a conservation management plan based on the management actions in the species’ successful recovery plan, (3) sufficient financial resources …

Transmetallation Of A Lithium Porphyrin With Iron(Ii), Kidus Debesai Jan 2012

Transmetallation Of A Lithium Porphyrin With Iron(Ii), Kidus Debesai

The Corinthian

Synthesis and characterization of the iron(III) derivative of the 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridium-4-yl)porphyrin was accomplished via metal metathesis of the lithium porphyrin and iron(II) ion. Preliminary molecular orbital analysis of the iron(II) and iron(III) derivatives demonstrate that the iron(III) porphyrin exists at a lower energy state.

Nef Functions In Blt Mice To Enhance Hiv-1 Replication And Deplete Cd4+Cd8+ Thymocytes, Wei Zou, Paul W. Denton, Richard L. Watkins, John F. Krisko, Tomonori Nochi, John L. Foster, J. Victor Garcia

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The outcome of untreated HIV-1 infection is progression to AIDS and death in nearly all cases. Some important exceptions are the small number of patients infected with HIV-1 deleted for the accessory gene, nef. With these infections, disease progression is entirely suppressed or greatly delayed. Whether Nef is critical for high levels of replication or is directly cytotoxic remains controversial. The major problem in determining the role of Nef in HIV/AIDS has been the lack of tractable in vivo models where Nef’s complex pathogenic phenotype can be recapitulated.

Results: Intravenous inoculation (3000 to 600,000 TCIU) of BLT …

Predicting Risk For Deer-Vehicle Collisions Using A Social Media Based Geographic Information System, G. Kent Webb Jan 2012

Predicting Risk For Deer-Vehicle Collisions Using A Social Media Based Geographic Information System, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

As an experiment investigating social media as a data source for making management decisions, photo sharing websites were searched for data on deer sightings. Data about deer density and location are important factors in decisions related to herd management and transportation safety, but such data are often limited or not available. Results indicate that when combined with simple rules, data from photo sharing websites reliably predicted the location of road segments with high risk for deer-vehicle collisions as reported by volunteers to an internet site tracking roadkill. Use of Google Maps as the GIS platform was helpful in plotting and …

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Previously, we reported that the streptomycin-treated mouse intestine selected nonmotile Escherichia coli MG1655 flhDC deletion mutants of E. coli MG1655 with improved colonizing ability that grow 15% faster in vitro in mouse cecal mucus and 15 to 30% faster on sugars present in mucus (M. P. Leatham et al., Infect. Immun. 73:8039–8049, 2005). Here, we report that the 10 to 20% remaining motile E. coli MG1655 are envZ missense mutants that are also better colonizers of the mouse intestine than E. coli MG1655. One of the flhDC mutants, E. coli MG1655 ΔflhD, and one of the envZ missense …

Two-Mode Ring Lasers: Stable, Instable And Irregular Behaviors In Coupled Lasers Logistic Equations, Muhammad Abdul, Farhan Saif Jan 2012

Two-Mode Ring Lasers: Stable, Instable And Irregular Behaviors In Coupled Lasers Logistic Equations, Muhammad Abdul, Farhan Saif

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We have analyzed two-mode ring coupled laser equations, after transforming them to the corresponding two dimensional coupled logistic equations. In our numerical experiment we find that for selected range of the three controlling parameters, chaotic pattern may emerge out of an infinite sequence of period-doubling bifurcations. However, there exists large regions of controlling parameter space where the approach to irregular behavior appears to be consistent with the Newhouse-Ruelle-Takens scenario, as evident by the appearance of two characteristics frequencies. As the ratio of controlling frequencies is varied, by changing the controlling parameters, phase locking periodic and quasi-periodic motions are observed on …

Emotional Cellular-Based Multi- Class Fuzzy Support Vector Machines On Product’S Kansei Extraction, Fuqian Shi, Jiang Xu Jan 2012

Emotional Cellular-Based Multi- Class Fuzzy Support Vector Machines On Product’S Kansei Extraction, Fuqian Shi, Jiang Xu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

It is an important methodology to extract product’s overall KANSEI images by evaluating Critical Form Features (CFF). In this paper, Multi-class Fuzzy Support Vector Machines (MF-SVM) employing Emotional Cellular (EC) model was presented to extract KANSEI images of product’s CFF. EC is a very special kind of semantics cell, which is defined on two-dimensional (Valence-Arousal) emotional space. The shell of EC covers the areas of the boundary of each emotional word that reflects its uncertainty, in common, a density function was employed to reflect this uncertainty. Firstly, product from features was mapped into an N- dimensional vector. Secondly, the norm …

Solitons And Periodic Solutions To Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations By The Sine-Cosine Method, Marwan T. Alquran

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we construct new solitary solutions to nonlinear PDES by the Sine-Cosine method. Moreover, the periodic solutions and bell-shaped solitons solutions to the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and the Gardner equations are obtained. New solution to the Cassama-Holm equation is also obtained. Finally, the solution of a two-component evolutionary system of a homogeneous Kdv equations of order 2 has been investigated by the proposed method.

Soul Of A Woman: The Sex Stereotyping Prohibition At Work, Kimberly A. Yuracko Jan 2012

Soul Of A Woman: The Sex Stereotyping Prohibition At Work, Kimberly A. Yuracko

Faculty Working Papers

In 1989 the Supreme Court in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins declared that sex stereotyping was a prohibited from of sex discrimination at work. This seemingly simple declaration has been the most important development in sex discrimination jurisprudence since the passage of Title VII. It has been used to extend the Act's coverage and protect groups that were previously excluded. Astonishingly, however, the contours, dimensions and requirements of the prohibition have never been clearly articulated by courts or scholars. In this paper I evaluate four interpretations of what the sex stereotyping prohibition might mean in order to determine what it actually …

Phylogenetic Characterization, Antimicrobial Susceptibilities, And Mechanisms Of Resistance In Bacteria Isolates From A Poultry Waste-Polluted River, Southwestern Nigeria, Olawale Olufemi Adelowo, Obasola Ezekiel Fagade

Turkish Journal of Biology

Bacteria resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem impacted partly by antibiotics use in livestock production. The present study investigated the pattern and mechanisms of resistance in 21 bacteria species isolated from a river used as a waste-dump by a poultry farm in Ogbomoso, southwestern Nigeria. Bacteria were isolated on nutrient agar supplemented with 50 µg/mL of tetracycline, their identities were determined by PCR amplification, and sequencing of their 16s rRNA genes and their susceptibility to 6 antimicrobials determined by broth dilution. The molecular basis of resistance among the isolates was also investigated by the PCR amplification of class …

Examination Of Virulence-Associated Lipoproteins In Novel Strains Of Haemophilus Ducreyi, Quantil M. Melendez Jan 2012

Examination Of Virulence-Associated Lipoproteins In Novel Strains Of Haemophilus Ducreyi, Quantil M. Melendez

Theses

Haemophilus ducreyi is a gram negative, sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen. This strict human pathogen causes the genital ulcer disease chancroid, which results in the formation of deep, painful ulcers. Chancroid infection has also been associated with high transmission rates of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. H. ducreyi virulence has been attributed, in part, to the extracellular virulence factors large supernatant protein A (LspA) and large supernatant protein B (LspB). Recently, H. ducreyi strains were assigned to two classes, Class I (CI) and Class II (CII). Strains were grouped based on common DNA sequences, expression of several known virulence factors, and differences …

Computational Modeling Of Mucin 1 (Muc1) Peptide And Anti-Muc1 Aptamer Binding, Kristen Lorraine Rhinehardt Jan 2012

Computational Modeling Of Mucin 1 (Muc1) Peptide And Anti-Muc1 Aptamer Binding, Kristen Lorraine Rhinehardt

Theses

Biomarkers are molecules that indicate changes in a physiological state and are detected by biosensors. Aptamer based biosensors are highly efficient, with high specificity and reusability. An aptamer library for a 25-mer aptamer contains 1015 possible sequences. Experimentally, the procedure known as Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX) is used. Selecting an aptamer from such a huge library is highly involved and time consuming. A single round of SELEX uses a few hundred aptamers and can take few hours to weeks. Use of computational modeling may simplify this aptamer selection process. Prior to computational modeling of the aptamer …

The Role Of Fra-1 And Cd44 In Malignant Brain Tumor Cell Migration Rasheena Decarroll Edmondson, Rasheena Decarroll Edmondson Jan 2012

The Role Of Fra-1 And Cd44 In Malignant Brain Tumor Cell Migration Rasheena Decarroll Edmondson, Rasheena Decarroll Edmondson

Theses

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common form of primary brain tumors. It is a highly aggressive tumor, characterized by an increased proliferation rate and a high capacity to invade surrounding tissues. Currently, GBM treatment includes surgical resection followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatment. However, these therapeutic options often do not alter the infiltrative and migratory capacity of GBMs. The invasive migration of glioblastoma multiforme has been associated with CD44, a cell surface glycoprotein and the principle receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA). The molecular basis of CD44 regulation in GBM is not fully understood. However, CD44 regulation has been shown …

First Steps In Growth Of A Polypeptide Toward Β-Sheet Structure, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner Jan 2012

First Steps In Growth Of A Polypeptide Toward Β-Sheet Structure, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The full conformational energy surface is examined for a molecule in which a dipeptide is attached to the same spacer group as another peptide chain, so as to model the seminal steps of β-sheet formation. This surface is compared with the geometrical preferences of the isolated dipeptide to extract the perturbations induced by interactions with the second peptide strand. These interpeptide interactions remove any tendency of the dipeptide to form a C5 ring structure, one of its two normally stable geometries. A C7 structure, the preferred conformation of the isolated dipeptide, remains as the global minimum in the full molecule. …

Extrapolation To The Complete Basis Set Limit For Binding Energies Of Noncovalent Interactions, Steve Scheiner Jan 2012

Extrapolation To The Complete Basis Set Limit For Binding Energies Of Noncovalent Interactions, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A means of extrapolating from double and triple-valence basis sets to a complete basis set is examined in the context of the pnicogen bonds in the BH2P⋯NH3 complexes, with B = CH3, H, NH2, CF3, OH, Cl, F, and NO2. Binding energies converge smoothly, and the trends for the various substituents B are unaffected by the basis set size, extrapolation, or level of inclusion of electron correlation, including MP2 and CCSD(T). The approach appears to be successful also for H-bonded systems, in particular the water dimer. In the event that full extrapolation within the context of CCSD(T) is not feasible, …

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss As A Growing Threat To Society, Rachela Greenman Jan 2012

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss As A Growing Threat To Society, Rachela Greenman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to determine the exact dangers of leisure music to society, as peoples’ hearing can be negatively impacted by excessive exposure to music, in terms of both duration and sound (dB) level. Two types of studies are analyzed. One study analyzes the effects of concert and disco style music on musicians and party guests, primarily through experiments which test pure-tone audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), and general sound levels of people and places before, during, and after exposure. Another study analyzes the effects of personal listening devices (PLDs) on the population, mainly through studies, …

Isolation And Characterization Of Galactinol Synthases From Hybrid Poplar, Faride Unda, Thomas Canam, Lindsay Preston, Shawn D. Mansfield

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The raffinose family of oligosaccharides (RFOs) serve as transport carbohydrates in the phloem, storage compounds in sink tissues, and putative biological agents to combat both abiotic and biotic stress in several plant species. To investigate further the functional roles of this class of compounds in trees, two cDNAs encoding galactinol synthase (GolS, EC 2.4.1.123), which catalyses the first step in the biosynthesis of RFOs, were identified and cloned from hybrid poplar (Populus alba3grandidentata). Phylogenetic analyses of the Populus GolS isoforms with other known GolS proteins suggested a putative role for these enzymes during biotic or abiotic stress in hybrid poplar. …

Effectiveness And Utility Of Acoustic Recordings For Surveying Tropical Birds, Antonio Celis-Murillo, Jill L. Deppe, Michael P. Ward Jan 2012

Effectiveness And Utility Of Acoustic Recordings For Surveying Tropical Birds, Antonio Celis-Murillo, Jill L. Deppe, Michael P. Ward

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Although acoustic recordings have recently gained popularity as an alternative to point counts for surveying birds, little is known about the relative performance of the two methods for detecting tropical bird species across multiple vegetation types. During June and July 2008, we collected species detection/nondetection data to compare the performance of a quadraphonic acoustic recording system and point counts for estimating species richness and composition and detection probabilities of 15 rare, moderately common, and common tropical bird species across six structurally distinct vegetation types (coastal dune scrub, mangrove, low-stature deciduous thorn forest, early and late successional medium-stature semievergreen forest, and …
