Size Assortment In Mixed-Species Groups Of Juvenile-Phase Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iserti) In The Bahamas, Paul Switzer, Daniel Quinn

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Striped parrotfish (Scarus iserti) often form heterospecific groups with other reef fishes. In this study, we examined the species and body size composition of these groups on reefs in The Bahamas. Groups averaged approximately 4 S. iserti and 2 associated species, with surgeonfish (Acanthurus chirurgus and A. bahianus), slippery dick (Halichoeres bivittatus), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) as the most common associates. Fewer groups than expected had only 1 associate; groups with 3 or more associates were more common than expected. Both the S. iserti and associated species tended to be closely sizematched within a group, perhaps due to benefits …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effect of a modified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program on overall quality of life and self-reported medical and psychological symptoms among a sample of ten religious community-dwelling adults over age 65. This study served as a feasibility study to determine the efficacy of conducting similar groups over a longer time period. This 10-session group program was for individuals dealing with stress-related problems, illness, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, and incorporated aspects of religiosity germane to the sample of participants, such as recitation and reflection of scripture passages and the bidirectional relationship between one's religious practices and …

Using A Minimum Tile Path For Plant Transformations Encompassing The Entire Soybean Genome, Hidayat Ullah, Mohammed Jasim, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

Genomes like Glycine max (soybean) that have been highly conserved following increases in ploidy represent a frontier for genome analysis. Many soybean QTL analyzed to date have been composed of gene clusters each with contributing a portion of the trait rather than alleles of single genes. At the Soybean Genome Database (SoyGD) http://soybeangenome.siu.edu the genome browser that integrates and served the publicly available soybean physical map, BAC fingerprint database and genetic map associated genomic data shows a minimum tile of transformation ready BIBAC-like clones in pCLD04541 (pV41; oriV; tra; bom). Sequence resources made available through the DOE genome sequencing project …

Anorexia Nervosa: Current Research From A Biological Perspective, Udy Tropp

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Eating disorders are viewed as serious mental illnesses, carrying significant, life-threatening medical and psychiatric implications, including morbidity and mortality. According to the Academy of Eating Disorders, anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. The American Psychiatric Association (2004) claims that approximately three percent of the United States female population has a clinically relevant eating disorder. Risk of premature death is 6-12 times higher in women with anorexia as compared to the general population, and it has become the third most common form of chronic illness among adolescent women aged 15 to 19 years. Although the prevalence …

A Functional Trait Perspective On Plant Invasion, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Brenda J. Grewell, Carla M. D'Antonio Jan 2012

A Functional Trait Perspective On Plant Invasion, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Brenda J. Grewell, Carla M. D'Antonio

Biology

Global environmental change will affect non-native plant invasions, with profound potential impacts on native plant populations, communities and ecosystems. In this context, we review plant functional traits, particularly those that drive invader abundance (invasiveness) and impacts, as well as the integration of these traitsacross multiple ecological scales, and as a basis for restoration and management.
We review the concepts and terminology surrounding functional traits and how functional traits influence processes at the individual level. We explore how phenotypic plasticity may lead to rapid evolution of novel traits facilitating invasiveness in changing environments and then oscale up' to evaluate the relative …

Use Of Controlled Release (Encapsulated Chemical Oxidant) Polymer For Remediation Of Contaminated Water Used For Intentional Biothreat Terrorism And Its Potential Application For Disinfection Of Agricultural Waste Pollution., Christopher Ross Jackson

Theses

The threat of biological agents being used to harm mass populations are of extreme importance in the 21st century. Pathogenic agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoan, and helminthes are of major concern in the wake that they can be used to cause death to anyone exposed. Agents like these can be disseminated by air, through water, or from animal, food, or human-to-human transmission. Controlled release methods are extensively used in the medical and agricultural industry to release chemicals at controlled rates for drug delivery in the human body or pesticide treatments for farming. Few researchers have investigated the use …

Patterns Of Anxiety Symptoms In Toddlers And Preschool-Age Children: Evidence Of Early Differentiation, Nicholas D. Mian, Leandra Godoy, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Alice S. Carter

Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The degree to which young children’s anxiety symptoms differentiate according to diagnostic groupings is under-studied, especially in children below the age of 4 years. Theoretical (confirmatory factor analysis, CFA) and statistical (exploratory factor analysis, EFA) analytical methods were employed to test the hypothesis that anxiety symptoms among 2–3-year-old children from a non-clinical, representative sample would differentiate in a manner consistent with current diagnostic nosology. Anxiety symptom items were selected from two norm-referenced parent-report scales of child behavior. CFA and EFA results suggested that anxiety symptoms aggregate in a manner consistent with generalized anxiety, obsessive–compulsive symptoms, separation anxiety, and social phobia. …

The Modernism Of Shashi Deshpande, Alpana Sharma Jan 2012

The Modernism Of Shashi Deshpande, Alpana Sharma

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

This essay studies the modernist feature of metafiction in Shashi Deshpande's novels to show how it allows Deshpande to discover an agency which, while conceived in personal and idiosyncratic terms as an isolated woman's bid for independence, has ramifications extending beyond the confines of the home and the book to an outright challenge of patriarchy. An exposition of the place that writing and art occupy in Deshpande's fiction is followed by an excursion into three aspects of the female creative process shared by her artist protagonists: its genesis in mourning, its expression in sexual being, and its feminist subversion of …

Sand, Sun, And Sex Tourism: What Really Happens During College Spring Break, Melissa Lee Brumer Jan 2012

Sand, Sun, And Sex Tourism: What Really Happens During College Spring Break, Melissa Lee Brumer

American Studies Senior Theses

College spring break has become a popular event that lasts for a week or two each year in March. The partying and drinking that occur on the beaches of popular North American vacation destinations may seem unrelated to the prostitution found in Amsterdam’s red light district. What, if anything, do travelers to these two different destinations have in common? Recent scholarship has argued that it is necessary to expand the definition of ‘sex tourism.’ Scholars have also researched college students’ behaviors during spring break trips. These studies show that students engage in drinking and sexual behaviors that pose threats to …

“Maybe It Was Too Much To Expect In Those Days”: The Changing Lifestyles Of Barnard’S First Female Students, Jennifer Prevete Jan 2012

“Maybe It Was Too Much To Expect In Those Days”: The Changing Lifestyles Of Barnard’S First Female Students, Jennifer Prevete

American Studies Senior Theses

In this thesis, I examine the lives of women who attended college during a time far less accommodating to their ambitions for higher education than today. From 1890 to 1920, some of the first females to attend college in the United States matriculated from single-sex institutions along the east coast. Existing discourse emphasizes the difficulties these women faced as they tried to pursue both career and family after graduation. Citing population studies of this time period, scholars suggest that an unusual number of college-educated women did not marry following their graduation or married at a later age. Aside from the …

Characterizing Performance Guarantees For Real-Time Multiagent Systems Operating In Noisy And Uncertain Environments, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald Arkin, Stephen Fox, Shu Jiang, Prem Nirmal, Munzir Zafar

Faculty Publications

Autonomous robots offer the potential to conduct Counter-Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) missions in an efficient and robust manner. However, to leverage this potential, a mission designer needs to be able to determine how well a robot system will operate in the noisy and uncertain environments that a C-WMD mission may require. We are developing a software framework for verification of performance guarantees for C-WMD missions based on the MissionLab software system and a novel process algebra approach to representing robot programs and operating environments.

In this paper, we report on our initial research for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency …

An Anthropology Of Repatriation: Contemporary Physical Anthropological And Native American Ontologies Of Practice, Ann M. Kakaliouras Jan 2012

An Anthropology Of Repatriation: Contemporary Physical Anthropological And Native American Ontologies Of Practice, Ann M. Kakaliouras

Anthropology

The policies and politics around the repatriation of ancestral human remains and biological materials to Native North Americans and other indigenous peoples have largely been rooted in attempts to reconcile divergent worldviews about cultural heritage. Even though repatriation has been a legal and practical reality for over 2 decades, controversies between anthropological scientists and repatriation proponents still often dominate professional and scholarly discourses over the fate of Native American human remains and associated artifacts. The epistemological gap between Western scientific and indigenous or Native American perspectives—however crucial to bridge in the process of consultation and achieving mutual agreements—is likely to …

Detection Of Non-Pcr Amplified S. Enteritidis Genomic Dna From Food Matrices Using A Gold-Nanoparticle Dna Biosensor: A Proof-Of-Concept Study, Sylvia A. Vetrone, Michael C. Huarng, Evangelyn C. Alocilja Jan 2012

Detection Of Non-Pcr Amplified S. Enteritidis Genomic Dna From Food Matrices Using A Gold-Nanoparticle Dna Biosensor: A Proof-Of-Concept Study, Sylvia A. Vetrone, Michael C. Huarng, Evangelyn C. Alocilja

Biology

Bacterial pathogens pose an increasing food safety and bioterrorism concern. Current DNA detection methods utilizing sensitive nanotechnology and biosensors have shown excellent detection, but require expensive and time-consuming polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify DNA targets; thus, a faster, more economical method is still essential. In this proof-of-concept study, we investigated the ability of a gold nanoparticle-DNA (AuNP-DNA) biosensor to detect non-PCR amplified genomic Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. enteritidis) DNA, from pure or mixed bacterial culture and spiked liquid matrices. Non-PCR amplified DNA was hybridized into sandwich-like structures (magnetic nanoparticles/DNA/AuNPs) and analyzed through detection of gold voltammetric peaks using …

Melatonin And Its Effect On Learning And Memory, Nechama Leah Bauman (Cahn) Jan 2012

Melatonin And Its Effect On Learning And Memory, Nechama Leah Bauman (Cahn)

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland and secreted into the body in a circadian rhythm. Melatonin is known to be involved in many vital body functions, including sleep, reproduction, and immune response. Exogenous melatonin, sold as over the counter natural supplements in drugstores, is commonly taken by many people to help cure various ailments. Melatonin also plays a role in the hippocampus. This paper investigates the effects of melatonin on long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Long-term potentiation, described as a long-lasting strengthening of synapses between nerve cells, is thought to be responsible for long-term memory retention. It …

Delayed Versus Early Umbilical Cord Clamping, Bracha Yaffa Sachs Jan 2012

Delayed Versus Early Umbilical Cord Clamping, Bracha Yaffa Sachs

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Immediate cord clamping is a part of the active management of the third stage of labor. Active management is standard birth protocol because it significantly reduces the risk of maternal postpartum hemorrhaging. However, since recent evidence advocates delayed cord clamping, various medical practitioners and health organizations would like to incorporate delayed cord clamping in place of immediate cord clamping as a part of standard birth protocol. Proposed benefits include a serious decline in the prevalence of anemia, especially, in countries where anemia is endemic, as well as a decrease in the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage and late onset sepsis. Although …

Cd4+Cd25+Regulatory T Cells And Their Role In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sara Shilcrat Jan 2012

Cd4+Cd25+Regulatory T Cells And Their Role In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sara Shilcrat

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction of this paper: Systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, is an autoimmune disease that currently has no known cause or cure (Postal et al. 2012; Okamoto et al. 2011). According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 1.5 million Americans are thought to be suffering from SLE. It is found in females ages 15-44 but may also been seen in men, teens, and children (Lupus Foundation of America 2012). It is characterized by the loss of the immune system’s ability to discern between “self” and foreign antigens. This leads to autoantibody production, abundant production …

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: How Can It Be Told Apart From Neurodegenerative Diseases Of The Elderly?, Raphael C. Zohn

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) affects more of the older population than people recognize. The underestimation of this neurological condition is due in most part to the overlap of its symptoms to other forms of dementia as well as many other geriatric conditions. The objective of this paper was to research and contrast various methods of differentiation in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus as well as find pretreatment indicators of successful surgery. Methods included reviewing of articles and studies done to evaluate which symptoms are most commonly presented in normal pressure hydrocephalus and their subtle differences from the symptoms of …
