Targeted Reinnervation, Yonatan Levi Moshayev Jan 2012

Targeted Reinnervation, Yonatan Levi Moshayev

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction of this paper: Imagine living a life where even the simplest of tasks such as eating a grape or holding an egg required intense concentration and months of training. Until recently, this was the harsh reality for people with upper limb prostheses. Currently, the most common upper limb prosthetic technology being used is body powered. These devices capture remaining shoulder movements with a harness and transfer this movement through a cable to operate the hand, wrist, or elbow. With this control method, only one joint can be operated at a time. When …

Students With Mild To Moderate Disabilities Perceptions Of Engagement In General Education And Self-Contained Educational Settings, Megan Hunt

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The legal framework for educating students with mild to moderate disabilities in the general education setting requires districts to shift towards a more inclusive model of education; however, many districts continue to educate students with mild to moderate disabilities in separate classrooms. This qualitative research study explores the constructs of learner engagement and students’ perceived levels of engagement in both self-contained and general education settings through open-ended interviews. Questions focused on indicators of engagement and the students perceived levels of academic, cognitive, behavioral, and psychological engagement across settings. Student responses were analyzed and themes emerged indicating greater levels of engagement …

Preparing Relative And Near Kin Caregivers : Evaluation Of Roots, Betsaida Macias Gonzalez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Family and Children’s Services at the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services, MCDSES, strive for children’s stability and safety. In Monterey County, there are too many unsuccessful relative and near kin placements. Relatives and near kin caregivers are mandated to complete ROOTS training, Relative Offering Ongoing Ties and Support. ROOTS' curriculum intends to increase caregiver's knowledge to prepare and guide them in becoming a stable home for a child in need. The evaluation of ROOTS, a knowledge based pre/posttest, demonstrated the caregivers' appreciation of support and it gave a broad understanding of the knowledge gained by the caregivers.

Walking A High Beam: The Balance Between Employment Stability, Workplace Flexibility, And Nonresident Father Involvement, Jason T. Castillo, Greg W. Welch, Christian M. Sarver Jan 2012

Walking A High Beam: The Balance Between Employment Stability, Workplace Flexibility, And Nonresident Father Involvement, Jason T. Castillo, Greg W. Welch, Christian M. Sarver

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Compared with resident fathers, nonresident fathers are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed and less likely, when they are employed, to have access to flexible work arrangements. Although lack of employment stability is associated with lower levels of father involvement, some research shows that increased stability at work without increased flexibility is negatively related to involvement. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 895), the authors examined the relationship between nonresident fathers’ employment stability, workplace flexibility, and father involvement. Results indicate that workplace flexibility, but not employment stability, is associated with higher levels of …

Phosphate-Solubilizing Microbes And Their Occurrence In The Rhizospheres Of Piper Betel In Karnataka, India, Padmavathi Tallapragada, Usha Seshachala

Turkish Journal of Biology

Low phosphate solubility is one of the most important factors limiting the plant growth in Indian soils. Many microorganisms can enhance phosphate solubility, but little is known about the magnitude of their phosphorus-solubilizing ability. The native populations of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and fungi were studied in different rhizospheric soil samples obtained from betel vine plants (Piper betel L.) in order to compare the results. The present study focuses on the phosphate-solubilizing capacity of bacteria and fungi in rhizospheric soil samples obtained from betel vine plants, revealing the dominance of Aspergillus species (26.1 mm) as major phosphate solubilizers, along with Bacillus subtilis …

Escherichia Coli Lacking Rpos Are Rare In Natural Populations Of Non-Pathogens, Emily Snyder '11, David M. Gordon, Daniel M. Stoebel Jan 2012

Escherichia Coli Lacking Rpos Are Rare In Natural Populations Of Non-Pathogens, Emily Snyder '11, David M. Gordon, Daniel M. Stoebel

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The alternative sigma factor RpoS controls a large regulon that allows E. coli to respond to a variety of stresses. Mutations in rpoS can increase rates of nutrient acquisition at the cost of a decrease in stress resistance. These kinds of mutations evolve rapidly under certain laboratory conditions where nutrient acquisition is especially challenging. The frequency of strains lacking RpoS in natural populations of E. coli is less clear. Such strains have been found at frequencies over 20% in some collections of wild isolates. However, laboratory handling can select for RpoS-null strains and may have affected some of these strain …

Predatory Identity Can Explain Nest Predation Patterns, Jennifer L. Reidy, Frank Thompson Jan 2012

Predatory Identity Can Explain Nest Predation Patterns, Jennifer L. Reidy, Frank Thompson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Knowledge of dominant predators is necessary to identify predation patterns and mitigate losses to nest predation, especially for endangered songbirds. We monitored songbird nests with time lapse infrared video cameras at Fort Hood Military Reservation, Texas, from 1997 to 2002 and 2005, and in Austin, Texas, during 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Predation was the most common source of nest failure. We identified 13 species of predators during 126 predation events. Snakes were the most frequent nest predator group (n = 48), followed by birds (n = 25), fire ants (n = 22), cowbirds (n = 15), …

Mapping Anuran Habitat Suitability To Estimate Effects Of Grassland And Wetland Conservation Programs, David M. Mushet, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Craig A. Stockwell Jan 2012

Mapping Anuran Habitat Suitability To Estimate Effects Of Grassland And Wetland Conservation Programs, David M. Mushet, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Craig A. Stockwell

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The conversion of the Northern Great Plains of North America to a landscape favoring agricultural commodity production has negatively impacted wildlife habitats. To offset impacts, conservation programs have been implemented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies to restore grassland and wetland habitat components. To evaluate effects of these efforts on anuran habitats, we used call survey data and environmental data in ecological niche factor analyses implemented through the program Biomapper to quantify habitat suitability for five anuran species within a 196 km2 study area. Our amphibian call surveys identified Northern Leopard Frogs (Lithobates pipiens), …

Nonlinear Effects Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Elk, Daniel R. Macnulty, Douglas W. Smith, L. David Mech, John A. Vucetich, Craig Packer Jan 2012

Nonlinear Effects Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Elk, Daniel R. Macnulty, Douglas W. Smith, L. David Mech, John A. Vucetich, Craig Packer

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Despite the popular view that social predators live in groups because group hunting facilitates prey capture, the apparent tendency for hunting success to peak at small group sizes suggests that the formation of large groups is unrelated to prey capture. Few empirical studies, however, have tested for nonlinear relationships between hunting success and group size, and none have demonstrated why success trails off after peaking. Here, we use a unique dataset of observations of individually known wolves (Canis lupus) hunting elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park to show that the relationship between success and group …

Abundance And Dynamics Of Filamentous Fungi In The Complex Ambrosia Gardens Of The Primitively Eusocial Beetle Xyleborinus Saxesenii Ratzeburg (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), Peter H.W. Biedermann, Kier D. Klepzig, Michael Taborsky, Diana L. Six Jan 2012

Abundance And Dynamics Of Filamentous Fungi In The Complex Ambrosia Gardens Of The Primitively Eusocial Beetle Xyleborinus Saxesenii Ratzeburg (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), Peter H.W. Biedermann, Kier D. Klepzig, Michael Taborsky, Diana L. Six

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Insect fungus gardens consist of a community of interacting microorganisms that can have either beneficial or detrimental effects to the farmers. In contrast to fungus-farming ants and termites, the fungal communities of ambrosia beetles and the effects of particular fungal species on the farmers are largely unknown. Here, we used a laboratory rearing technique for studying the filamentous fungal garden community of the ambrosia beetle, Xyleborinus saxesenii, which cultivates fungi in tunnels excavated within dead trees. Raffaelea sulfurea and Fusicolla acetilerea were transmitted in spore-carrying organs by gallery founding females and established first in new gardens. Raffaelea sulfurea had …

Αβ Cells And A Mixed Th1/Th17 Response Are Important In Organic Dust-Induced Airway Disease, Jill Poole, Angela Gleason, Christopher Bauer, William West, Neil Alexis, Stephen J. Reynolds, Debra J. Romberger, Tammy Kielian Jan 2012

Αβ Cells And A Mixed Th1/Th17 Response Are Important In Organic Dust-Induced Airway Disease, Jill Poole, Angela Gleason, Christopher Bauer, William West, Neil Alexis, Stephen J. Reynolds, Debra J. Romberger, Tammy Kielian

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background: Organic dust exposure in agricultural environments induces an inflammatory response that attenuates over time, yet repetitive dust exposures result in chronic lung diseases. Animal models resembling this chronic lung inflammatory response have been developed, yet the underlying cellular mechanisms are not well defined.

Objective: Because mice repetitively exposed to organic dust extracts (DE) display increased CD3+ T cell lung infiltrates, we sought to determine the phenotype and importance of these cells.

Methods: Mice received swine confinement DE repetitively for 3 weeks by established intranasal inhalation protocol. Studies were conducted with peptidoglycan (PGN) because it is a …

Disaster Preparedness In The American Academy:A Study Of Institutional Context Factors For Compliance With The National Incident Management System., Paul Wilder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent major disaster events at colleges and universities around the nation have demonstrated that change is needed in the way that higher education institutions (HEIs) approach disaster preparation. The comforting notion that HEIs are immune to natural and manmade hazards has been shattered by events such as the Virginia Tech massacre and Hurricane Katrina's assault on Mississippi's coastal campuses. Reports of many other institutional responses to a variety of disaster incidents demonstrate that these two major disasters are not isolated events on the campuses of the American academy. This study developed a snapshot view of disaster preparation in American HEIs, …
