Neville, R. E. Gresswell, J. B. Dunham, Amanda E. Rosenberger, Michael K. Young

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Fire will play an important role in shaping forest and stream ecosystems as the climate changes. Historic observations show increased dryness accompanying more widespread fire and forest die-off. These events punctuate gradual changes to ecosystems and sometimes generate stepwise changes in ecosystems. Climate vulnerability assessments need to account for fire in their calculus. The biophysical template of forest and stream ecosystems determines much of their response to fire. This report describes the framework of how fire and climate change work together to affect forest and fish communities. Learning how to adapt will come from testing, probing, and pushing that framework …

The Right To Learn: Intellectual Honesty And The First Amendment, Jeffrey M. Cohen Jan 2012

The Right To Learn: Intellectual Honesty And The First Amendment, Jeffrey M. Cohen

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Science education is one of the most hotly contested issues in public debate. Even after decades of jurisprudence and scholarly analysis, politicians still ignite public passions by suggesting that creationism or intelligent design theory be taught alongside of evolution in public school science classrooms. Despite political rhetoric, the Establishment Clause has been steadfastly used to prevent religion masquerading as science from entering the science classroom. However, public officials have launched attacks recently on other scientific theories, such as climate change, that are not religiously motivated. Students are left in these instances without resort to the Establishment Clause and are potentially …

Dubious Role Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis In Pathogenesis Of Type I Diabetes, Saisathya Thanigachalam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (TIDM) is a chronic disorder in which the insulin producing beta cells are selectively self-destroyed. Although the etiology of the disease has not been determined, genetic dispositions such as SLC11A1 polymorphism in suffering patients have been reported. The role of pathogenic microorganisms such as Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in TIDM has also been recently debated. MAP is already known to cause paratuberculosis in cattle and now it is a strong suspect of causing autoimmune diseases in humans such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune Thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diabetes. We hypothesis that molecular …

Reclaiming Legitimate Authority In The Academy: A Critical Analysis Of Jones' Critical Pedagogy, Michael Mascolo Jan 2012

Reclaiming Legitimate Authority In The Academy: A Critical Analysis Of Jones' Critical Pedagogy, Michael Mascolo

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Like any good paper, Harkins and Wells’ (2009) analysis of critical pedagogy has provoked critical reflection and controversy. In this article, I respond to Jones’ (2012) defense of critical pedagogy, formulated as a response to DeCesare’s (2009) critique of Harkins and Wells’ article. As elaborated by Jones, critical pedagogy is aimed at reducing the power differential between teachers and students in order to empower the diversity of student voices on any given issue. Critical pedagogy invites dialogue among diverse and even clashing perspectives, with a mind toward resolving conflicts between perspectives without privileging anyone viewpoint (including the professor or teacher’s …

Meeting In The Middle: Making Use Of Popular Culture In The Classroom, Michelle Ronayne, Joanne Shayne, Johnny Nguyen

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to explore the current landscape of the 21st century Introductory Psychology classroom. The authors—graduate students and current teachers of psychology—are well aware of the need to move away from traditional, top-down approaches to teaching. Personal experience has convinced them that the standard lecture format does not engage all 21st century students. A belief in the need to actively engage students in introductory psychology courses is the basis for the present paper. Through the use of technology and active-learning classroom activities, teachers might succeed in meeting students of psychology “where they are,” thus improving the …

Technology's Role In Constructing Meaningful Knowledge, Joseph Mayo Jan 2012

Technology's Role In Constructing Meaningful Knowledge, Joseph Mayo

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

This paper discusses technology’s role in meaningful knowledge construction, which hinges on ways computer tools can be used to improve pedagogy through actively engaging learners. At the center of this discussion is the difference between stand-alone technological literacy that serves as an end in itself, and educationally defensible information literacy that represents a technology-assisted means to the end of metacognitive reflection as a salient component of an undergraduate liberal education. Drawing on learning principles embodied in the theoretical frameworks of Seymour Papert’s constructionism and Gordon Pask’s conversation theory, personalized computer applications of concept maps, mind maps, and repertory grids are …

Effectiveness And Utility Of Acoustic Recordings For Surveying Tropical Birds, Antonio Celis-Murillo, Jill Deppe, Michael Ward

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Although acoustic recordings have recently gained popularity as an alternative to point counts for surveying birds, little is known about the relative performance of the two methods for detecting tropical bird species across multiple vegetation types. During June and July 2008, we collected species detection/nondetection data to compare the performance of a quadraphonic acoustic recording system and point counts for estimating species richness and composition and detection probabilities of 15 rare, moderately common, and common tropical bird species across six structurally distinct vegetation types (coastal dune scrub, mangrove, low-stature deciduous thorn forest, early and late successional medium-stature semievergreen forest, and …

Community Participation And Travel Choice: An Analysis Of Central Florida New Urban And Conventional Suburban Residents, Laura P. Mikovsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the built environment and social and transportation outcomes when comparing traditional and conventional suburban neighborhoods, but much remains to be learned about whether New Urbanism can produce similar results. Among studies where new urban neighborhoods have been assessed, most have centered on regions with highly-utilized public transit systems and with climates that are amenable to utilitarian physical activity. This research sought to build on the existing research base through direct comparison of new urban and conventional suburban neighborhoods in central Florida, a region with an under-developed transit system and a climate that renders …

Is A Self-Catering Holiday With The Family Really A Holiday For Mothers? Examining The Balance Of Household Responsibilities While On Holiday From A Female Perspective, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn

Articles

The commonly cited definition of what constitutes a holiday is that it is a change from the norm, or an escape from everyday life. But is this the case if tourists are going on a self-catering holiday where many of the tasks from everyday life such as cleaning, minding children and cooking must still be undertaken? This research is specifically interested in the role of mothers, from their own perspectives, on such holidays. It explores how household responsibilities are divided between partners when on holiday and questions does this differ from the situation when at home? In so doing this …

A Gga Plus U Approach To Effective Electronic Correlations In Thiolate-Ligated Iron-Oxo (Iv) Porphyrin, Justin Elenewski, John C. Hackett Jan 2012

A Gga Plus U Approach To Effective Electronic Correlations In Thiolate-Ligated Iron-Oxo (Iv) Porphyrin, Justin Elenewski, John C. Hackett

Medicinal Chemistry Publications

High-valent oxo-metal complexes exhibit correlated electronic behavior on dense, low-lying electronic state manifolds, presenting challenging systems for electronic structure methods. Among these species, the iron-oxo (IV) porphyrin denoted Compound I occupies a privileged position, serving a broad spectrum of catalytic roles. The most reactive members of this family bear a thiolate axial ligand, exhibiting high activity toward molecular oxygen activation and substrate oxidation. The default approach to such systems has entailed the use of hybrid density functionals or multi-configurational/multireference methods to treat electronic correlation. An alternative approach is presented based on the GGA+U approximation to density functional theory, in …

A Study Of Visual Puffery In Fragrance Advertising: Is The Message Sent Stronger Than The Actual Scent?, Mark Toncar, Marc Fetscherin

Faculty Publications

Purpose - This paper investigates visual exaggerations of fragrance advertisements by comparing subjects’ expectations resulting from print ads to their subsequent product evaluations. It then considers whether the actual scents fall short, meet or exceed these expectations.

Design/methodology/approach - By means of a semiotic analysis we capture the corresponding literary attributes of the ads to develop adjective pairs describing the meaning of the ads. Interviews are conducted to assess the meaning that consumers draw from the fragrance ads and we supplement these findings by performing a blind olfactory product evaluation of the fragrances. Paired sample t-tests are used to compare …

The YbeB (DUF143) family of uncharacterized proteins is encoded by almost all bacterial and eukaryotic genomes but not archaea. While they have been shown to be associated with ribosomes, their molecular function remains unclear. Here we show that YbeB is a ribosomal silencing factor (RsfA) in the stationary growth phase and during the transition from rich to poor media. A knock-out of the rsfA gene shows two strong phenotypes: (i) the viability of the mutant cells are sharply impaired during stationary phase (as shown by viability competition assays), and (ii) during transition from rich to poor media the mutant cells …

Minocycline Modulates Antigen-Specific Ctl Activity Through Inactivation Of Mononuclear Phagocytes In Patients With Htlv-I Associated Neurologic Disease, Yoshimi Enose-Akahata, Eiji Matsuura, Yuetsu Tanaka, Unsong Oh, Steven Jacobson

Neurology Publications

Background The activation of mononuclear phagocytes (MPs), including monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells, contributes to central nervous system inflammation in various neurological diseases. In HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), MPs are reservoirs of HTLV-I, and induce proinflammatory cytokines and excess T cell responses. The virus-infected or activated MPs may play a role in immuneregulation and disease progression in patients with HTLV-I-associated neurological diseases.

Results Phenotypic analysis of CD14+ monocytes in HAM/TSP patients demonstrated high expression of CX3CR1 and HLA-DR in CD14lowCD16+ monocytes, compared to healthy normal donors (NDs) and asymptomatic carriers (ACs), and the production of TNF-α and IL-1β in …
