In this study, a series of thirty-five substituted quinoline-2-carboxamides and thirty-three substituted naphthalene-2-carboxamides were prepared and characterized. They were tested for their activity related to the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport (PET) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts. Primary in vitro screening of the synthesized compounds was also performed against four mycobacterial species. N-Cycloheptylquinoline-2-carboxamide, N-cyclohexylquinoline-2-carboxamide and N-(2-phenylethyl)quinoline-2-carboxamide showed higher activity against M. tuberculosis than the standards isoniazid or pyrazinamide and 2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylcarbonyl)quinoline and 1-(2-naphthoyl)pyrrolidine expressed higher activity against M. kansasii and M. avium paratuberculosis than the standards isoniazid or pyrazinamide. The most effective antimycobacterial compounds demonstrated insignificant toxicity against the human …

Interferon alpha (IFNα) is widely used for treatment of melanoma and certain other malignancies. This cytokine as well as the related IFNβ exerts potent anti-tumorigenic effects; however, their efficacy in patients is often suboptimal. Here, we report that inflammatory signaling impedes the effects of IFNα/β. Melanoma cells can secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines that inhibit cellular responses to IFNα/β via activating the ligand-independent pathway for the phosphorylation and subsequent ubiquitination and accelerated degradation of the IFNAR1 chain of type I IFN receptor. Catalytic activity of the p38 protein kinase was required for IFNAR1 downregulation and inhibition of IFNα/β signaling induced by proinflammatory …

A wealth of behavioral data has shown that the visual properties of objects automatically potentiate motor actions linked with them, but how deeply are these affordances embedded in visual processing? In the study reported here, we used electrophysiological measures to examine the time course of affordance resulting from the leftward or rightward orientation of the handles of common objects. Participants were asked to categorize those objects using a left- or right-handed motor response. Lateralized readiness potentials showed rapid motor preparation in the hand congruent with the affordance provided by the object only 100 to 200 ms after stimulus presentation and …

Forces existing in psychiatry may diminish the importance of psychotherapy training as psychiatrists are increasingly given the task of medication management. Psychotherapeutic relationships can be created in medication management settings, however, and the neglect of concepts such as transference could have deleterious consequences. The authors describe the case of a man with a traumatic brain injury referred for medication management who developed an erotized transference toward his female resident-physician. This case illustrates the concept that an understanding of transference is relevant to the setting of medication management

Two cases of “Shared Psychotic Disorder” were diagnosed over a period of less than a year in a children’s psychiatric center. Shared Psychotic Disorder is one of the differential diagnoses that need to be entertained when evaluating a delusional patient. Including the patient’s family and/or significant others in the assessment increases the possibility of diagnosing Shared Psychotic Disorder. An eight-year-old girl was admitted after exhibiting psychotic behavior with paranoid delusions she shared with her mother. Specifically, she reported that “neighbors next door were repeatedly breaking into her house, pinning her down, raping her, and injecting her with I.V. drugs.” An …

A 40 year old overweight male with a history of bronchial asthma, hypertension, and “schizophrenia” was admitted for intractable bronchial asthma. He did not have a history of drug or alcohol use.
Upon admission, he was treated with high doses of IV methyl prednisone, oral prednisone, and triamcinolone inhaler. He developed complex visual hallucinations which decreased following tapering of prednisone and discontinuation of the triamcinolone. EEG showed diffuse slowing suggesting a toxic metabolic state.

Philopatry Drives Genetic Differentiation In An Island Archipelago: Comparative Population Genetics Of Galapagos Nazca Boobies (Sula Granti) And Great Frigatebirds (Fregata Minor), Iris Levin, Patricia Parker
Biology Department Faculty Works
Seabirds are considered highly mobile, able to fly great distances with few apparent barriers to dispersal. However, it is often the case that seabird populations exhibit strong population genetic structure despite their potential vagility. Here we show that Galapagos Nazca booby (Sula granti) populations are substantially differentiated, even within the small geographic scale of this archipelago. On the other hand, Galapagos great frigatebird (Fregata minor) populations do not show any genetic structure. We characterized the genetic differentiation by sampling five colonies of both species in the Galapagos archipelago and analyzing eight microsatellite loci and three mitochondrial genes. Using an F‐statistic …

Global Connections: Integrating Theory And Practice In Professional Nursing: The Artinian Intersystem Model In Educational Settings, Barbara M. Artinian, Pamela H. Cone
Biennial Convention (CONV)
(41st Biennial Convention) The Artinian Intersystem Model (AIM) is eminently suited to nursing education because of its focus on the two systems, teacher and student, and how they negotiate effective learning. This presentation will describe how students everywhere come to school with intrasystems consisting of their existing knowledge and understanding of life and health care, their personal values and meanings, and their resultant behaviors, and we as teachers, having our own intrasystem elements, must reach our students in ways that are meaningful and sense making to them, thus engaging in intersystem negotiation. For over 20 years, the Azusa Pacific University …

Moral Distress In Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses Who Care For Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Mary S. Webb, Denise Passmore, Denise J. Poirier Maguire, Genieveve J. Cline
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Moral distress has been defined as being the painful psychological disequilibrium that results from recognizing the appropriate action, yet not taking it because of some obstacle or constraint. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses are thought to be at particular risk for moral distress due to the nature of this highly specialized nursing. Technological advances in the care of the newborn infants have been rapid and diverse, and often lead to extremely complex management of very ill infants who formerly would never have survived. More recently, NICU nurses are responsible for the care of babies with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) …

Living vertebrates vary drastically in body size, yet few taxa reach the extremely minute size of some frogs and teleost fish. Here we describe two new species of diminutive terrestrial frogs from the megadiverse hotspot island of New Guinea, one of which represents the smallest known vertebrate species, attaining an average body size of only 7.7 mm. Both new species are members of the recently described genus Paedophryne, the four species of which are all among the ten smallest known frog species, making Paedophryne the most diminutive genus of anurans. This discovery highlights intriguing ecological similarities among the numerous independent …

Caring In Nursing Practice: A Concept That Transcends Gender, Normajean Colby
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Nurses who are male represent approximately six percent of the nursing workforce in the United States. This minority representation begins in nursing education programs and extends into practice. This finding is not unique to the United States. Throughout the world, men represent a minority population in the nursing profession. As the profession seeks to recruit and retain qualified individuals, while also embracing a diverse workforce, a study was undertaken which investigated a population whose voice has not been actively solicited in the literature, that of practicing registered nurses who are male. Using descriptive naturalistic inquiry the research question was "What …

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) role was developed in part to partner with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) nurse researchers to inform and implement new discoveries in nursing science. The advent of the DNP program was met with much public controversy, including questions surrounding how the role would be implemented in the hospital setting. The concept has been very popular among nurses however, and has seen exponential growth with no concomitant development of models to guide role implementation. As of 2009, there were 5,165 students enrolled in 120 DNP programs across …

ABSTRACT: Microbes living in the mammalian gut exist in constant contact with immunity system that prevents infection and maintains homeostasis. Enteric alpha defensins play an important role in regulation of bacterial colonization of the gut, as well as in activation of pro- and anti-inflammatory responses of the adaptive immune system cells in lamina propria. This review summarizes currently available data on functions of mammalian enteric alpha defensins in the immune defense and changes in their secretion in intestinal inflammatory diseases and cancer.

The World-Wide Evidence-Based Practice Agenda: Proof, Power, Prestigeâ And Cash, Patricia A. O'Malley
Biennial Convention (CONV)
This session explores the unspoken reality in health care- that evidence based practice is not necessarily true or ethical. Creation and application of evidence must be based on nursing's primary ethics as described in the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics. Ethical as well as unethical use of evidence over the past 30 years will be explored. Right uses of evidence using the ANA Code of Ethics will be demonstrated by providing practical tools with case study applications. Tools provided will be resources for nurses from the bedside to the board room designed to prevent moral distress, patient dissatisfaction …

Reiki: A Complementary, Biofield Therapy For Management Of Postoperative Pain, Robin Toms
Biennial Convention (CONV)
There is increasing interest in complementary and alternative therapies that do not rely on expensive, invasive technology, and are holistic in focus. Such therapies could improve pain management in the poorest of countries globally. Research has shown the benefits of combining conventional, Western, pain management with CAM (Olson, 2003; Gillespie, 2007; Olson, 2003; Vitale, 2006 ;). Reiki, a complementary therapy, is a form of energy therapy in which the focus of the practitioner, with or without light touch, is believed to access universal energy sources that can assist in balancing the biofield and strengthening the body's ability to heal itself …
