Diffraction Free, Self-Bending Airy Wave Arrangement, Aristide Dogariu, Demetrios Christodoulides, Georgios Siviloglou Jan 2012

Diffraction Free, Self-Bending Airy Wave Arrangement, Aristide Dogariu, Demetrios Christodoulides, Georgios Siviloglou

UCF Patents

Methods and systems for Airy waves and wavepackets or beams having all the advantages of a diffraction-free or dispersion free wave but at the same time, its intensity features accelerate or self-bend during propagation. These beams can perform ballistic dynamics akin to projectiles moving under the action of gravity. The Airy waves are highly asymmetric and as a result their energy is more tightly confined in one quadrant thus increasing the energy density in the main lobes. These wavepackets can be one, two, and three-dimensional waves. In addition they tend to self-heal themselves which is important in adverse environments.

Natural variation in the regulation of the accumulation of mineral nutrients and trace elements in plant tissues is crucial to plant metabolism, development, and survival across different habitats. Studies of the genetic basis of natural variation in nutrient metabolism have been facilitated by the development of ionomics. Ionomics is a functional genomic approach for the identification of the genes and gene networks that regulate the elemental composition, or ionome, of an organism. In this study, we evaluated the genetic basis of divergence in elemental composition between an inland annual and a coastal perennial accession of Mimulus guttatus using a recombinant …

Zwitterionic Chitosan Derivative, A New Biocompatible Pharmaceutical Excipient, Prevents Endotoxin-Mediated Cytokine Release, Gaurav Bajaj, William G. Van Alstine, Yoon Yeo

Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications

Chitosan is a cationic polymer of natural origin and has been widely explored as a pharmaceutical excipient for a broad range of biomedical applications. While generally considered safe and biocompatible, chitosan has the ability to induce inflammatory reactions, which varies with the physical and chemical properties. We hypothesized that the previously reported zwitterionic chitosan (ZWC) derivative had relatively low pro-inflammatory potential because of the aqueous solubility and reduced amine content. To test this, we compared various chitosans with different aqueous solubilities or primary amine contents with respect to the intraperitoneal (IP) biocompatibility and the propensity to induce proinflammatory cytokine production …

Men Who Give It Away: The Potential Perils Of Free And Non-Anonymous Sperm Donation, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2012

Men Who Give It Away: The Potential Perils Of Free And Non-Anonymous Sperm Donation, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A recent episode of 20/20, entitled “The New Sex,” focused on the supposedly emerging practice of free and non-anonymous sperm donation. The show opens with a portrayal of a married couple, Beth and Richard, who desired to conceive a child together, but could not, because Richard’s vasectomy could not be reversed. After spending fourteen thousand dollars on fertility treatments, all of which are unsuccessful, the couple turns to the Internet’s Free Sperm Donor Registry to locate a donor who will provide sperm at no cost and without the cloak of anonymity. The rest of the episode, described below, follows the …

Vitamin A deficiency is a serious global health problem that can be alleviated by improved nutrition. Development of cereal crops with increased provitamin A carotenoids can provide a sustainable solution to eliminating vitamin A deficiency worldwide. Maize is a model for cereals and a major staple carbohydrate source. Here, we discuss maize carotenogenesis with regard to pathway regulation, available resources, and current knowledge for improving carotenoid content and levels of provitamin A carotenoids in edible maize endosperm. This knowledge will be applied to improve the nutritional composition of related Poaceae crops. We discuss opportunities and challenges for optimizing provitamin A …

“Miniature Set-Piece Battles”: Infantry Patrolling Ops In Korea, Christopher Doary Jan 2012

“Miniature Set-Piece Battles”: Infantry Patrolling Ops In Korea, Christopher Doary

Canadian Military History

During the summer of 1942 the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) destroyed five German U-boats in the space of six weeks. It was a remarkable feat for a small, inexperienced navy. Canadian warships had sunk only two enemy submarines during the first three years of the war, and had not sunk one in ten months. The surprising success of the summer of 1942 was not sustained: after the fifth sinking the RCN did not sink another U-boat for four months. Thus, the summer U-boat kills were an unusual phenomenon which has been remarked upon by Canadian naval historians. Historians have not, …

“Missed Opportunity”: Operation Broadsword, 4 Brigade And The Gulf War, 1990–1991, Sean M. Maloney

Canadian Military History

The decision not to deploy 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade (CMB) to participate in the Gulf War may eventually be of interest to students of Canadian defence policy. The current lack of available material on this subject will no doubt attenuate such efforts. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief, and very tentative, discussion of relevant factors contributing to the decision not to go. In essence, the following should be considered a “toe in the water” rather than a “headlong dive.”

Tommy Burns As A Military Leader: A Case Study Using Integrative Complexity, J.L. Granatstein

Canadian Military History

Lieutenant-General E.L.M. Burns is relatively well-known to Canadian military historians and to Canadians generally. A professional soldier born in 1897, Tommy Burns attended the Royal Military College, leaving before graduation to serve with the Canadian Corps in France and Flanders during the Great War. He saw much action, won the Military Cross, and decided to remain in the tiny Canadian Permanent Force after the Armistice. Burns rose with rapidity in the interwar years, his career helped by brilliant performance at the British Army Staff College, Quetta, and selection for the Imperial Defence College, London. He had powerful patrons, senior officers …

Spartin Protein Associates With Phospholipids Via Its Plant-Related Senescence Domain And Functions As A Lipid Transfer Protein, Maureen Ashlee Shaw Jan 2012

Spartin Protein Associates With Phospholipids Via Its Plant-Related Senescence Domain And Functions As A Lipid Transfer Protein, Maureen Ashlee Shaw

Theses (1 year embargo)

Troyer syndrome is a hereditary spastic paraplegia caused by a mutation that leads to a complete loss of expression of spartin protein. The plant-related senescence domain in spartin is highly conserved and present in over 150 proteins, but its function is unknown. Our results indicate that spartin associates with phospholipids via its senescence domain.

Phospholipids are important components of intracellular membranes and play roles in many cellular processes. Knock-down of spartin results in impaired cell division. The phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI3P) is present at midbodies, where it recruits proteins for cytokinesis. Our findings demonstrate that spartin colocalizes with PI3P at …

The Synaptic Vesicle Snare Neuronal Synaptobrevin Promotes Endolysosomal Degradations And Prevents Neurodegeneration, Adam Haberman, W. Ryan Williamson, Daniel Epstein, Dong Wang, Srisha Rina, Ian A. Meinertzhagen, P. Robin Hiesinger

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

Soluble NSF attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) are the core proteins in membrane fusion. The neuron-specific synaptic v-SNARE n-syb (neuronal Synaptobrevin) plays a key role during synaptic vesicle exocytosis. In this paper, we report that loss of n-syb caused slow neurodegeneration independent of its role in neurotransmitter release in adult Drosophila melanogaster photoreceptor neurons. In addition to synaptic vesicles, n-Syb localized to endosomal vesicles. Loss of n-syb lead to endosomal accumulations, transmembrane protein degradation defects, and a secondary increase in autophagy. Our evidence suggests a primary defect of impaired delivery of vesicles that contain degradation proteins, including the acidification-activated …

Introversion And The Use Of Parasocial Interaction To Satisfy Belongingness Needs, Carol Laurent Jarzyna Jan 2012

Introversion And The Use Of Parasocial Interaction To Satisfy Belongingness Needs, Carol Laurent Jarzyna

Dissertations (6 month embargo)

Individuals usually satisfy the universal need to belong through close personal relationships (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). However, introverts engage less in the social behaviors that provide the opportunity to establish and maintain these relationships (Mehl, Gosling, & Pennebaker, 2006; Rusting & Larsen, 1995). Some evidence suggests that the close relationships of introverts are less fulfilling than those of extraverts (Berry, Willingham, & Thayer, 2000; Watson, Hubbard, & Wiese, 2000). Thus, supplementary ways of filling belongingness needs might benefit introverts. According to the Social Surrogacy Hypothesis, one such way is through parasocial interaction (Derrick, Gabriel, & Hugenberg, 2009), i.e., the one-sided …

Ontology In Emmanuel Levinas's Philosophy, Stacy Carol Bautista Jan 2012

Ontology In Emmanuel Levinas's Philosophy, Stacy Carol Bautista

Dissertations (6 month embargo)

Taking the notion of the il y a, its prehistory and eventual fate, as an index of the development of the problem of being in Levinas's work, this thesis argues that Levinas's philosophy does not respond to a consistently articulated problem. He eventually transforms ontological evil into social evil, a shift that is visible in his handling of il y a.

Design And Its Proof: Richard J Neutra And Darell Boyd Harmon, Sarah Sheridan Jan 2012

Design And Its Proof: Richard J Neutra And Darell Boyd Harmon, Sarah Sheridan

Conference papers

When describing his ‘Philosophy of Design’ Neutra described his architecture as an assimilation of ideas that were informed by his own observations and those of the sciences.[i] Eager to substantiate his design theory and the innovative nature of his school design, Neutra extended his investigations into the sciences. He proposed that he would take scientific research findings and apply them to the architectural design problem; his writings reveal his critical knowledge of science and scientific methodology, and his trenchant observations on its relevance for architectural design.

Because of its difficulty proving its significance, Neutra proposed that one of the …
