Approximate String Matching Methods For Duplicate Detection And Clustering Tasks, Oleksandr Rudniy
Approximate String Matching Methods For Duplicate Detection And Clustering Tasks, Oleksandr Rudniy
Dissertations
Approximate string matching methods are utilized by a vast number of duplicate detection and clustering applications in various knowledge domains. The application area is expected to grow due to the recent significant increase in the amount of digital data and knowledge sources. Despite the large number of existing string similarity metrics, there is a need for more precise approximate string matching methods to improve the efficiency of computer-driven data processing, thus decreasing labor-intensive human involvement.
This work introduces a family of novel string similarity methods, which outperform a number of effective well-known and widely used string similarity functions. The new …

Evaluation Of Bio-Optical Inversion Of Spectral Irradiance Measured From An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mark A. Moline, Ian Robbins, Brian Zelenke, W. Scott Pegau, Hemantha Wijesekera
Biological Sciences
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can map water conditions at high spatial (horizontal and vertical) and temporal resolution, including under cloudy conditions when satellite and airborne remote sensing are not feasible. As part of the RADYO program, we deployed a passive radiometer on an AUV in the Santa Barbara Channel and off the coast of Hawaii to apply existing bio-optical algorithms for characterizing the optical constituents of coastal seawater (i.e., dissolved organic material, algal biomass, and other particles). The spectral differences between attenuation coefficients were computed from ratios of downwelling irradiance measured at depth and used to provide estimates of the …

The Mechanical Testing Of Single Nanofiber, Pratik Manohar Dahule
Theses
Polymer nanofibers exhibit properties that make them a favorable material for the development of tissue engineering scaffolds, filtration devices, sensors, and high strength lightweight materials. Perfectly aligned PLLA Nanofibers were fabricated by an electrospinning technique under optimum conditions and the diameter of the electrospun fibers can easily be tailored by adjusting the concentration of the polymer solution. To align the nanofibers, special arrangement was made in terms of two aluminum plates. Good alignment of polymer nanofibers on specimen was confirmed by SEM observation. The effect of different electro-spinning parameters on maximum fiber length, average fiber diameter, diameter uniformity, and fiber …

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Agglomerated Cork Products Using Thz Spectroscopy And Imaging, Han Zhang
Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Agglomerated Cork Products Using Thz Spectroscopy And Imaging, Han Zhang
Theses
Terahertz spectroscopy from 0.15 to 0.3 THz is used to classify agglomerated cork products. Position dependent scattering of radiation allows one to image the internal structure of cork products. Previous studies have focused on natural (solid) cork stoppers. In this study, the feasibility of classifying agglomerated cork structures using THz imaging and spectroscopy is investigated. Both THz images and spectra are used to classify the agglomerated cork samples. Classification of the samples used three methods: visible examination of the THz images, statistical analysis of the pixel intensities, and a polynomial regression of the THz spectral data averaged over all pixels. …
The Multi-Scale Dynamics Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas
The Multi-Scale Dynamics Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas
Master's Theses
Cognitive control is a central issue in developmental psychology. Traditional theories of psychology solve this problem by positing a top-down central executive, which coordinates cognitive resources in pursuit of goals. We propose an alternative explanation: cognitive control arises from physical interactions across many different timescales within the system. College and preschool aged participants were asked to complete a simple executive function task, card sorting. We found that multi-scale physical interactions differed depending on experimental constraints, and that executive function in these cases was driven primarily by flexibility in multi-scale interactions, rather than the dominance of one scale. This suggests that, …

Alendronate Treatment Elicits A Reduction In Fatigue-Life Of Canine Cortical Bone, Joseph Ryan Geissler
Alendronate Treatment Elicits A Reduction In Fatigue-Life Of Canine Cortical Bone, Joseph Ryan Geissler
Theses
Bone serves contradictory needs; bone must be strong yet light, and stiff yet flexible. At the tissue level bone material withstands cyclic loading without failing by dissipating energy via the formation and accumulation of microdamage. Proper removal of this damage in exchange for fresh tissue is vital to bone maintenance, and is achieved through a remodeling process. Imbalanced remodeling leads to osteoporotic fractures. Bisphosphonate drugs are proven to reduce fracture risk. However, the long-term effects of bisphosphonates on tissue-level properties are unknown. This study characterized the fatigue-life of cortical bone tissue after bisphosphonate treatment with alendronate (Aln). 1 1th ribs …

Neural Differentiation Of Pluripotent Stem Cells And Applications To Micropatterned Agarose Hydrogel For Nerve Guidance, Jamila S. Gittens
Theses
Many central nervous system (CNS) disorders are attributable to damaged oligodendrocytes, the cells that form the myelin sheath of axons. An effective source of human oligodendrocytes is crucial, making pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, an attractive source for nerve tissue repair and regeneration due to their unlimited capacity for self-renewal and their ability to differentiate into all major cell lineages. Bioengineered 3-D hydrogel culture systems have the potential to elucidate mechanisms required for regeneration of CNS cells. The goals of this study are: (1) to investigate the effects of retinoic acid (RA), sonic hedgehog (shh) agonist, …

When New Urban Sociology (NUS) appeared in urban sociology in early 1970s in Europe, by including state and class, it offered a macro view point, to answer the insuficiency of micro frame which had been the characteristic of urban sociology from the Chicago School. However, along with the weakening of welfare state, NUS also lost its significance, and it then chose to deconstruct itself through theory of space. This paper tries to elaborate the origin of NUS and its development, putting it in the present context, to explore the possibility of perspective of the urban as the hub that connects …
Preparation Of Different Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes By Interfacial Polymerization And The Effect Of Post-Polymerization Treatment On Separation Performance, Yu Qin
Theses
Interfacial polymerization (IP) is a powerful technique for fabrication of thin film composite (TFC) membranes. In this study, polyamide nanofiltration (NF) composite membranes ware prepared by interfacial polymerization of polyethylenimine (PEI) or m-phenylene diamine (MPD) with isophthaloyl dichloride (IPD) on the surface of a porous polyethersulfone (PES) support. Concentrations of monomer reactants for this reaction were decided by equivalent weight ratio. A standard IP procedure was applied to successfully coat PES flat films. After preparation, three different post-polymerization treatments were employed and one optimal treatment was proven after membrane testing.
The TFC flat film membranes were characterized by nanofiltration of …

Combustion Dynamics Of Individual Reactive Material Particles, Carlo Francisco Badiola
Combustion Dynamics Of Individual Reactive Material Particles, Carlo Francisco Badiola
Theses
Metallic reactive powders are widely used as solid fuels, pyrotechnic materials, and components of enhanced blast explosives. Metals are attractive because of their high combustion enthalpies and temperatures. Quantitative descriptions of the combustion processes and mechanisms for both pure metal and composite particles are also desired for their proper implementation in specific applications. Among reactive metals, Al is used most widely and its combustion has been studied extensively. A recently developed experimental setup using laser-ignited metal powders enabled one to record optical signatures for time-resolved combustion instances for 2-25 µm diameter aluminum particles burning in different atmospheres. Individual particle diameters …
Current Methodological Issues In Candidate Gene Association Studies In Psychiatric Disorders, Leo Sher M.D.
Current Methodological Issues In Candidate Gene Association Studies In Psychiatric Disorders, Leo Sher M.D.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
One of the most rapidly emerging areas of neuroscience research is the study of genetic approaches to complex psychiatric disorders. The author discusses potential benefits and pitfalls of candidate gene association studies. Association studies search for correlations in the population between a DNA marker and a disorder. The so-called candidate gene approach is frequently used in association studies. Candidate gene studies are usually based on hypotheses about relationships between specific known loci and particular phenotypes. The aim of molecular genetic studies of behavioral disorders includes the development of predictive and diagnostic testing for psychiatric disorders that can help to establish …
